This administration is so serious about enforcement that they took almost 400 border patrol officers off the southern border and transferred them to the Canadian border. They attempted to take enforcement authority away from local Arizona law enforcement. They ordered that work place enforcement stop. Sounds to me like they already have amnesty. What about all of the LEGAL immigrants who are already here and going through all kinds of red tape to get LEGAL green cards or citizenship?

I wouldn’t worry about them tackling immigration-they flopp at everything they touch and do and before we get to 2012 we have 2010-This nov election was only a taste of what is yet to come-

The Schmuck-in-chief has got some real problems. His Independent voter base is shrinking by the day and there’s more than a few Dems who are not liking what he’s doing. The economy is a huge deal right now. Folks who can’t get jobs are worried about how they’re going to pay their mortgage and whether they’ll be able to feed their kids this month. He promised the nation that if he could get the stimulus bill passed, unemployment wouldn’t go above 8 percent. Boy did he miss that one. It’s at 10.2 percent, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to improve anytime soon. Things are looking grim for the reaper and his merry band of thugs for 2010, not to mention 2012. He’s taking a dive, and fast.

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano tackling illegal immigration next year? Tackling them and then herding them all to the nearest voting booth, I’m sure.

Sterling, I do think improvement is on the horizon however. I don’t pretend to be an economist, I just play one on the blog..;-), however my econ 101 tells me the stock market is the leading edge, employment the lagging edge. The stock market has already “bounced” mostly due to the companies making employment adjustments, which = higher unemployment numbers, hence larger profits.

Have faith , we always bounce back.

BTW if you want to send me your relatives resume I’d be happy to pass it on to my husband. His company isn’t “hiring” at the moment either, but he always keeps his ears open for openings.

You’re right Lori, the stock market is the leading indicator of an improving economy – and the unemployment numbers have started ticking down this week. Some companies are already hiring and calling back laid-off workers. It’s a cycle that’s predictable – but without the CHANGES going on because of the new administration, I don’t think consumer confidence would have ticked up the way it did.

Yesterday, for me, was a day to savor. More important than a warm, sunny Ohio day, I took my best IT buddy and his family out for a steak dinner in celebration of his next IT job. After his several months of unemployment, it was good to see the anguish gone from his face.

I anticipate hearing of your brother’s new job. His education and experience makes him a shoe-in. I’m sure, Miss Sterling, you too, soon, will have a day to savor.

A high school librarian in Phoenix says a former student at the school returned two overdue books checked out 51 years ago along with a $1,000 money order to cover the fines.

Camelback High School librarian Georgette Bordine says the two Audubon Society books checked out in 1959 and the money order were sent by someone who wanted to remain anonymous.

Bordine says the letter explained that the borrower’s family moved to another state and the books were mistakenly packed.

The letter said the money order was to cover fines of 2 cents per day for each book. That would total about $745. The letter says the extra money was added in case the rates had changed.

Bordine says the money will buy more books, and the overdue books will be returned to the shelves.

SHANGHAI, China – President Barack Obama made no effort to conceal his irritation when his press corps used the first question of his maiden Far East trip to ask what was taking him so long on Afghanistan.

Jennifer Loven of The Associated Press had asked: “Can you explain to people watching and criticizing your deliberations what piece of information you’re still lacking to make that call.”

“With respect to Afghanistan, Jennifer,” the president scolded, “I don’t think this is a matter of some datum of information that I’m waiting on. … Critics of the process … tend not to be folks who … are directly involved in what’s happening in Afghanistan. Those who are, recognize the gravity of the situation and recognize the importance of us getting this right.”

Police captured one of Sicily’s top Mafia fugitives on Sunday, dealing a stiff blow to the island’s Cosa Nostra crime syndicate, Italian officials said.

Convicted mobster Domenico Raccuglia, who has been on the run for 15 years, now faces several life sentences for crimes including the murder of a rival’s 9-year-old son, whose body was then thrown into a vat of acid.

Raccuglia was arrested in an apartment in a tiny town near Trapani, where he is believed to have had his power base, police said.

Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni described Raccuglia as Cosa Nostra’s No. 2, and hailed his arrest as delivering “one of the hardest blows” to the Sicilian Mafia in the last few years.

WASHINGTON — At first glance, the impact of the federal stimulus act so far in Michigan looks like cause for celebration — some 22,500 jobs created or saved in about seven months, $1.2 billion received to date and promises of $3 billion more to come.

But closer inspection reveals flaws in the claims and raises doubts about the mammoth spending bill’s impact to date.

A Free Press analysis of reports on more than 1,800 awards to agencies, departments, municipalities and firms in Michigan under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act found huge inaccuracies in job estimates of several recipients and millions of dollars in errors in their reports.

It also found that the vast majority of jobs reported or created — 85% — were tied to 15 primary recipients, with three-quarters of all stimulus awards made to date in the state creating or saving one job or less.

An official with the tribal council said she believes no jobs would have been lost without the government money.

Signing the stimulus bill into law in February, President Barack Obama promised an unprecedented amount of transparency in how the money was spent — even as officials warned that with so much money being poured into the economy so quickly, there was bound to be error and fraud. While few instances of the latter have been charted, there seem to be may indications of the former.

The $787-billion federal stimulus is the equivalent of about $6,800 for every American household.

Leslee Fritz, director of Michigan’s Recovery office, spent two days in Washington, D.C., last week talking to stimulus officials from other states about how to improve reporting. Still, she said, she’s pleased with the federal investments.

“In a state like Michigan, there’s never going to be a situation where we feel they’ve moved fast enough” to get money flowing and jobs created, she said. But, she added, “I think we’re off to a good start.”

Last month, the Recovery Office reported that $37 billion in checks had gone out for $159 billion in direct investment awards by the end of September. The estimated jobs created or saved: 640,000.

Errors in reporting

Since then, news media reports across the country have found errors. A Boston Globe review last week of 12,374 jobs being created or saved in Massachusetts concluded the claim was “wildly exaggerated.” The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel found that a report saying 10,000 jobs had been created or saved in Wisconsin was “rife with errors, double counting and inflated numbers.”

“Are you surprised?” asked Peter Morici, an economist and business professor at the University of Maryland who is a critic of the stimulus bill. “Using this ruse, we now have unemployment” nationally “above 10%, and it’s going to keep going up. In Michigan it’s much worse, and worse is going to become terrible.”

Morici’s biggest complaint is that, despite Obama’s claim last January that 90% of the jobs the stimulus created or retained would be in the private sector, it is set up to produce mostly public-sector jobs.

So far in Michigan, the numbers support his claim. Of 22,513 jobs reported, 13,555 were tied to state money for education, doled out to local school districts. Without a huge economic turnaround or more federal money after the 2-year stimulus ends, many of those jobs could be threatened.

Poll: Americans Divided on Health Care Bills

A new Associated Press poll shows Americans are divided about the Democratic health care bills advancing in Congress.

Although most agree that major health care changes are needed, the public is worried that hidden costs are lurking in the legislation’s fine print.

The poll found that 43 percent oppose the health care plans under discussion in Congress, while 41 percent are in support _ a statistical tie. Another 11 percent remain undecided and could hold the key to the final verdict on President Barack Obama’s signature issue.

The results mark a slight slippage for the overhaul plan, down from a 40-40 split in an AP poll last month. Opponents have stronger feelings on the issue than do supporters.

The point is: the economy is recovering! Stock market futures are way up this morning…and that means companies will be hiring into next year. No more stimulus is needed to create jobs, however there are still lots of infrastructure projects that have long been neglected. As long as the GOP governors do what they are supposed to do with the stimulus money, those projects can come to fruition.

As for healthcare – they continue lying about the cost to cover their own butts and the promises they made to big business (their “employers”). If you continue to believe their lies, you are cheating yourselves – and you will be cheated by your healthcare providers. The GOP is so deep into their lies that the truth is buried well beneath them. You make the call.

Providers are contractually bound to reimbursement rates with insurance companies, including three big ones run by the federal government, Medicare, Medicare, and TriCare. If fact, those government entities set the scale for all the other insurance companies.

The health legislation authored by House Republicans and set to be unveiled in the next few days reportedly would not prevent health insurance companies from discriminating against patients with pre-existing conditions.

That’s not just a stark contrast to Democratic-produced legislation; it puts Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and his co-authors at odds with many members of their own party.

Many of the most respected health care voices in the GOP have historically treated the idea of eliminating pre-existing condition exclusions as an obvious plank in any reform effort. A Democratic opposition researcher provided the Huffington Post with several examples.

Even deeply conservative figures like Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okl) insisted as recently as August that “everyone agrees” that legislation should “eliminate pre-existing conditions” as an excuse for denying coverage.

Coburn’s colleague in the Senate, John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), explained in July that after listening to people in his home state, he understood that Congress needed “to take care of things like pre-existing conditions so that that doesn’t stop them from getting insurance.”

Another Senate Republican who was heavily involved in negotiating health care reform, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, has unequivocally declared that the government has “to prohibit insurers from denying coverage to people with preexisting medical conditions and charging higher premiums to people who are sick.”

Even the Republican Whip in the Senate, Jon Kyl of Arizona, has stressed the need to make sure that patients “cannot be denied care because [they] have a pre-existing condition…”

On the House side as well, many Republicans will find themselves at odds with the legislation that their leadership is about to introduce.

The approach reflects the stance taken by other Republicans, who have downplayed the regulatory role the government can play in determining who private health insurers will or will not cover. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) did not put the elimination of discrimination based on pre-existing conditions in his health care reform proposal. Instead, he proposed a Guaranteed Access Plan, which, according to his campaign, would use state funds to “contract with insurers to cover patients who have been denied insurance and could join with other state plans to enlarge pools and lower overhead costs.”

Still, at this juncture in the health care reform debate, even the private insurance industry has conceded that it will likely have to end or drastically alter its pre-existing condition policies (provided that there is a mandate that all people — healthy or not — purchase insurance in the first place).

Boehner’s apparent resistance to attaching that provision to the House GOP health care package leaves him susceptible to the political attack that he is overly friendly to the insurance industry.

When I see pictures on T.V of starving children in 3rd world countries, it breaks my heart. I am not Mother Theresa, but I send what I can to organizations who help feed them. Why do they have singe parents? Often it is because a young girl got pregnant because she had sex with the wrong person at the wrong time. Whose fault is that? We should concentrate on giving them condoms rather than asking them to abstain.” Other families have single parents because one of the parents is a drunk or drug addict and can’t take care of himself, let alone a child. Sarah Palin attended six different colleges before she finally graduated with a degree in Communications/Journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. Sources say that as a kid, she was kind of a bookworm, but that at college she didn’t distinguish herself. But really, that’s about all we know.

Palin really ought to just come out and tell us her GPA. Seriously, nobody seems to care that Joe Biden graduated 506 out of 688 from his class, or that McCain finished nearly dead last in his. I mean, how much worse could Palin’s record be? Americans seem to be more put off by evasiveness than they are by poor grades, so she may as well just release her transcripts.

The insurance companies won’t cover everyone unless they are “required” to purchase insurance, or else they want to pick and choose who they cover. So, they either have to be cut out completely, which is what we should do, or go to single payer (whereby the deduction will come from your paycheck, just like you pay social security now). That’s the only workable solution really. We should be able to accomplish that after we get a super majority in 2010!

Internet phone service provider Vonage Holdings Corp. has agreed to pay $3 million to 32 states to settle an investigation into some of its business practices.

In a filing Monday with the Securities Exchange Commission, the company said it also agreed to provide refunds to affected customers.

Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden said his office received complaints from consumers who said they found it difficult to cancel their service with Vonage amid pressure from the company to keep their accounts.

They’re driving around cars from the 1960’s whose motors and transmissions have been replaced two or three times. This is the wonderful job Castro has done. I agree with you J.A.B. There were many things mentioned during the campaign and since that progressives and the MSM seem to ignore. We know about redistribution through taxation. We know about single payer health care, cap and trade that will send not only energy costs through the roof, but consumer costs ad well, beacuse of pass throughs from manufacturers. The one thing that disturbs me most, and mentioned in the campaign, is Obummer’s million man civilian security force, better trained and equipped than the military. For what purpose? I would imagine it will be used to put down civil unrest when all the rest of his BS starts to set in!!

“A poll from the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press casts more doubt on the wisdom of the Democrats’ coordinated strategy to tie elected Republicans to radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. When it comes to American political knowledge, Limbuagh’s audience is better informed than those of most mainstream media news outlets.
The poll tested the audiences of a host of news magazines, radio and television shows, and newspapers on three basic political questions: the majority party in the House of Representatives; the name of the Secretary of State; and the identity of the Prime Minister of Great Britain. On the American political questions, Limbaugh’s radio audience scored the highest, in a virtual tie with viewers of fellow conservative talker Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Hannity and Colmes audience.

T-Mobile USA resumed selling Sidekick phones Tuesday, more than a month after a server meltdown at Microsoft Corp. caused contact numbers, pictures and other personal information to disappear from many of the phones.

In the intervening time, Microsoft managed to restore most of the missing user data. T-Mobile provided $100 gift cards to affected customers.

The Sidekicks listed on T-Mobile’s Web site are now slightly cheaper. For instance, the top-of-the-line LX model is now $150, down from $175.

Unlike most phones, Sidekicks can lose all personal data when the batteries run down. The data is then restored from Microsoft’s servers over the wireless network. When the servers went down in early October, Sidekicks lost e-mail and Web access, and phones that ran down their batteries or were reset lost all personal data.

Weep for joy, Glenn Beck: the Anti-Defamation League has cited you as the national media’s fear-monger-in-chief.

In a new report examining the wave of anti-government hostility that’s spread across the country since Barack Obama won the White House, the ADL cited Beck as the “most important mainstream media figure who has repeatedly helped to stoke the fires of anti-government anger.”

Beck, a right-wing talk host with a TV show on Fox and popular syndicated radio program, is in a league of his own, the report from the Jewish anti-h a t e watchdog group asserts.

CMS: House health bill will hike costs $289B

The latest schemes are leaking out of the Senate, where Majority Leader Harry Reid is scrambling to find enough money while not offending Big Labor. So Mr. Reid wants to reduce this tax and is floating a new Medicare payroll tax surcharge as a substitute.

The interaction on this blog makes me sad. I’ll pray for all of you. Blogger and Liz, you both especially need to evaluate your behavior. Insulting, demeaning, and accusing are not healthy for anyone emotionally or any other way.

The only thing we, the public, don’t know about government programs, is how much money is being spent and who is benefitting. In other words ther is plenty room for corruption. If we the people can somehow limit the amount of money the government has to misuse, then maybe we can see some progress toward reducing the debt. Reducing the deficit only reduces the rate of growth of the debt.

I guess I’d better clarify my grammar lesson. Actually, adverbs CAN modify adjectives; but the word “correct” is NOT correct in Liz’ writing. She needs a word that will modify the verb “speak”, and the adjective, “correct” cannot do so. Adectives can only modify a noun or pronoun. Please do forgive my oversight. How uncouth of me!

Medicare Trustees Report Shows Serious Financial Status of Medicare Program

In their annual report, the Medicare Trustees today announced that both the Medicare Hospital Trust Fund and the Supplementary Medical Insurance Trust Fund expenditures are growing faster than the rest of the economy….

The Trustees report that Medicare’s Hospital Insurance (HI) Trust Fund will become insolvent earlier in 2019 than reported last year. HI expenditure growth is estimated to average 7.4 percent each year over the next 10 years, a higher rate than either Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or Consumer Price Index (CPI) growth.

This year the HI Trust Fund will spend more than its income, and from 2009 through 2017, about $342 billion will need to be transferred from the Federal treasury to cover beneficiaries’ hospital insurance costs.

Ta-da!! It took me all of 3 minutes to find the 2008 report on Medicare. Going down starting in 2008. Not bringing in enough to cover expenses starting in 2008.

I’ve seen both of those president’s bows, too. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with a slight bow to acknowledge the dignitary, as may be be the custom of the dignitary’s country. I don’t think that there’s anything disrespectful in not bowing either, since it is not our custom. I am concerned, however, that the current president’s bow was so deep. I read that it was so awkwardly deep, that it embarrassed many Japanese. I hope that’s not true, but that is what I heard. I also think that the reason this offends so many Americans is that he performed the same exaggerated bow to the Saudi king a few months ago. You have to admit that it makes people wonder.

When I was very young, I met a Japanese business man, and when he was introduced to me, he bowed to me slightly. He smiled very big at me as he did this, and I asked, awkwardly, if I should bow as well. He said no, no, and he took my hand and said it is my country’s way of showing respect and making a friend, just like your country’s custom of shaking hands, and we are never offended if you do not bow as well.

Michael Foreman and Dr. Robert Satcher Jr. will float outside Thursday morning to hook up a spare antenna and cables on the International Space Station. They also will tackle some other chores.

It will be the first spacewalk for Satcher. He became the first orthopedic surgeon in space, with Atlantis’ liftoff earlier this week.

Three spacewalks are planned during the shuttle’s weeklong visit, which began with a smooth docking Wednesday.

It never ceases to amaze me how truly ignorant Liz is. When I think she has gone as far ‘over the top’ as possible, it mutters another unbelievable statement. The other thing that baffles me is that people actually read its insane mutterings and answer to them, giving them some standing in some very small way. I’d rather if it was just ignored and we could get on to talking about important things like how stupid Obummer is, or is that how stupid he thinks Americans are. That’s ‘REAL’ Americans, not a Liz or it’s alter ego, Kevin. There are so many smart people who post here every day that if Liz was totally ignored, there is no way anybody would miss the sparring. I really like it here but can only waste so much time reading here even if I can’t see the ‘Liz’ posts, I see the ones that retort those comments and it is wasted effort in arguing with idiots….wow….that would be a great name for a book, too! I wish Ali would open two blogs every time…the one that people yell at Liz in, and another that we ‘argue’ the events of the day in. Of course I’m just an idiot anyway. Thanks for listening.

Good Morning Olini….I have to agree with that! Of course, it could be argued that Every Day is a Beautiful Day if you wake up and believe it to be true. Just look in the mirror and tell yourself….who’s in charge of how this day will start? I AM! So I think I’ll have another great day and go out and dare someone to make you day any different. I found that if I started my days thinking that, most days end up being great days. Of course, that’s just my opinion and I could be wrong….

Yeah we’re almost to healthcare where the cost cutting has already started. The mamogram used to be for 40 and over, Now suddenly has increased tyo 50. How magical is this.
