Alisyn in the Greenroom

Sunday Morning

We’ll be debating a taboo subject this morning:  should you tell your coworkers how much you make?  My instant thought was “NO!”  but a business expert has convinced me of the merits of doing it.  What do you think?

Good morning Ms Alisyn,

Since I work for the Government everyone pretty much knows what you make any way.

How was that extra hour of sleep?

Have fun yesterday trick and treating, or did you trick or Tweet?

Good luck with your picks today.

Good morning Alisyn. I was a teacher and the salary schedule was there for anyone to see, so it didn’t make any difference to me. However, it did sometimes cause a problem when people figured out how much more the coaches were making than anyone else, and it put in black and white the disparity between classroom teachers and central office administrators.

Comment by BruceWV

I’ve always cut my own deals. I don’t care what anyone else makes and it’s none of their business what I do.

Comment by Jimmy

morning Ali, and all…
salaries…don’t ask…don’t tell….creates problems

Comment by John

Good morning Alisyn and all, I couldn’t tell you if I wanted to. When you are self-employed it can vary alot fromm year to year.I wouldn’t even if I knew what I made. There is someone on here that would want to confiscate everthing for her social projects. LOL

Comment by carolynro

Ditto to Bruce’s comment and John’s.

Comment by John

Besides it’s such a small amount. Others would laugh at me. LOL

Comment by marine1967

I tell too many what I make …. the IRS … Seriously though, my income in come is public record and is actually published written and electronically

Comment by Lanna

Good morning, Alisyn and everyone.

I’m in the self-employed group too.

Comment by Ed Reining

I actually work on a scale same as others, its not what you make but the amount of time you work.

OK its time for my Halloween Joke.

Young kid dressed as a pirate for Haloween.
He goes to door : “Twik or Tweet”
Man Answers: “And what are you today?”
Kid Replies: “I’m a piwat”
Man Replies: ” Well son where are your little Buccaneers?”
Kid Replies: ” They are right on the side of my little Buccanhead”

After years I’ve been banned from telling family and friends this certain joke.

I am self employed, so I get paid AFTER everyone else does. When I was a SUIT, I did not broadcast salaries. I always felt that it would lead to resentment among the employees. If they somehow shared that information, then maybe the lower paid employee might just try to improve his/her performance, rather than stirring the pot. It seemed like stirring the pot put your job in jeopardy!!

Comment by Kevin

Miss Alisyn,

I’m with you, “instant thought of NO!” I want to hear from the business expert that convinced you of the merits of doing such.

Comment by Keith

Years ago I worked for an organic food retailer (e.g. located in Columbus Circle) and they would every year publish salaries for everyone in the “grey book” and make the book available to employees.

I never really cared much what other people made and I always figured that if “inspired” somebody to do my job for the the same salary, then God bless them. Then, I realized deals were being cut left and right for stock options and considered “deferred income” which was not included in the Grey Book. I suddenly became unhappy realizing I was so underpaid.

Comment by Liz K

Clay ton is right. That kitchen really does look like a bathroom….the kind in an airport for example. I wonder how much the person who designed it got paid??????? …. and the executive who approved it?????

Comment by Frank C

Morning all,

When I was a business owner most of my employees did not discuss their salary

Comment by Lanna

I was sure it was a bathroom, and I wondered if Fox’s ratings are so high, why the cost-cutting measure of putting the kitchen in a bathroom? It looks very institutional too.

Comment by Salvatore

Why would Agassi tell the world about all these things, some people will say he didnt play fair,
and the people he beat…. might have a problem with this…we are talking about millions of dollars here.

Comment by Frank C

I totally agree with Sal…people should be paid on experience (what they bring to the party) plus how they perform. Ms Ali should be #1 on the curvy couch

Comment by ellie

Pay is always a sore subject where I work. We are all expected to do the same work even though we have different job descriptions and pay levels. It causes resentment and tension in the work environment. Oh, I work in health care. Help!

Comment by retrotx

We’re self-employed, too, and it varies widely. Our employees get paid first and we hope the payroll extends then to us. I’d like to see every liberal congressman work for one of their months off trying to keep up with my husband in the real world and actually see what it takes to produce that money they waste. The good news is if one of them actually did that, worked for a month like us, it would put them out of commission physically the rest of the year and prevent them screwing up anything else, maybe.

Comment by Jimmy

Congress just votes themselves a raise when they want one. Wish I was able to do that at work!

Comment by Rick CO

Be careful with this equal pay thing. Of the 3 folks we are watching this morning there is now question that Alisyn is paid the most and deservidly so. She is far better as an anchor and actually is the lead person in this trio. In my observation she should be receiving as much as the other two combined. As a result, she is deserving of a higher salary. One of the 3 is probably on the edge of retaining their position, if not, they he should be.

Rick fr CO

Comment by Frank C

Retro, you are so right, the last person to get paid in a small business are the
owner(s). There were many weeks where my paycheck was “short” or did not get deposited.

Many of them are so far removed from reality they do not know what the real world is like. Can U say term limits….

Comment by chas

The very last thing you need is a face lift Ms Alisyn.

chas

Comment by Frank C

Jimmy Congress cannot vote itself a raise. It takes effect with the start of the next session. So they do and don’t vote themselves a raise.

Comment by Salvatore

You got that right Chas…. Alisyn looks Great just the way she is.

Comment by Frank C

When will Pelozi, Reid, and Ocampaigner throw the Congressional Budget Office under the Bus?

Comment by chas

If you want to know where the Health care bill would go, just look at what happened to how Social Security expanded in just 10 years.

Also remember what Barney Frank said “This is the shortest way to a single payer system”.

No matter what they say, the end game for them is control of the health care system.

Comment by Ann Beatty

While watching your discussion about the lack of vaccine in this country, a thought hit me. If we have NO manufacturer of vaccine in this country, doesn’t that mean we are at extreme risk of substandard or contaminated vaccines from other countries?
We have had an inordinate amount of dangerously contaminated products which have been recalled including pet food, toys, and toothpaste. Because it is not manufactured in the US, how can we properly insure the safety and efficacy of the vaccine?
If we can’t prevent accidental contamination, what makes us sure that we can prevent intentional contamination which could be a threat to our national security?

Comment by chas

That Ms Ann, is an excellent point. Thank You for that.

The poll, conducted by WomanTrend, a division of the polling companyTM inc., surveyed 800 women registered to vote and was conducted between October 19-25, 2009.

Comment by Frank C

Let me see if I got this right we are going to spend over $1 Trillion for 2% of the people?

Comment by carolynro

Ann: The reason vaccines are not largely produced in the US is a result of Hillary Clinton’s dictum that vaccine producers provide free vaccine to children. While many producers do give a percentage of free product they could not survive giving all of their vaccine away so many of them just stopped making the stuff. So, yes we are stuck with using what ever is made elsewhere and under who-knows-what conditions.

I am really tired of politicians like Newt Gingrich telling us that we have to compromise our principles and elect someone from one of the two corrupt parties that now represent the American people. Compromise is what has brought us to this horrible place. People need to wake up and break out of this system of destruction that has taken hold of our country. Our officials are corrupt. This country would not be in this state if we had not compromised all these years and voted for the lesser of two evils. It is time for the American people to take back their government and back people of sound character. Dig deep into whats left in your pockets and back a true and honest person to represent you in congress and the senate.

Yes, I realize how voting has gone for the last century and what I am saying is it has gotten us to the point where our country is no longer ours. It is time to stand up and do something different. This lazy attitude of allowing someone else dictate to us who our candidates will be is ruining our country. These people who have power in the Republican and Democratic party do not care what we want. They are telling us what we want. Will we just continue to sit back and let this happen or get up and do something about it before it is too late?

New Poll Shows a Dead Heat in N.Y.’s 23rd District Between Democrat, Conservative

By Karl Vick
A new poll out Saturday morning shows a dead heat between two of the three candidates in Tuesday’s special congressional election in Upstate New York.

The Siena College survey has Democrat Bill Owens with 36 percent of likely voters in New York’s 23rd Congressional District and Conservative Party upstart Doug Hoffman with 35 percent. Republican Dede Scozzafava had 20 percent, the latest sign that the pounding she has received from negative ads financed by the Club for Growth has badly hollowed out her support in this historically Republican district.

game underway LETS GO BOYS !!!!!!! GIve us girls the win baby!!!

Comment by Liz

Thanks Kevin! I can handle them – it’s just sad that people are so politically extreme that they can h-a-t-e people who don’t share their views. They can’t agree to disagree – or find any compromise. I’m not afraid of them because I know most of them are seniors with nothing better to do than go on the internet and complain – at least that’s what I gather from most of the posting here. Columbine was very scary! I read the letter from the student who did the shooting – my heart goes out to her! Lesson: stay in touch with your kids – even if it seems they don’t want you to be involved in their lives – that’s when they need you most!

Comment by Liz

I meant to say the mother of the student who did the shooting! I hope she can eventually find peace!

Comment by Liz

Kevin – Columbine happened during my junior year of high school. Fortunately, my high school years were fun, and I never knew anyone who was that depressed. We talked about it in some of my classes – and tried to guess what could have motivated him. It’s anybody’s guess. In a population as large as the US, these things are bound to happen now and then. Very sad!

Comment by Kevin

Liz,

Comment by carolynro

Kevin: Many fine people are republicans and many odious people are democrats so what is your point about Unabomber’s parents? With all due respect…

I could find nothing about Kaczynski’s parents political affiliation.

“The Unabomber Biography

Born in Chicago, Ted Kaczynski was intellectually gifted as a child and known to be extremely shy and aloof. While an infant, Kaczynski had a severe allergic reaction to medication. He was hospitalized for several weeks and allowed infrequent visits from his parents, during which they could not hold their child. The once-happy baby reportedly was never the same. According to his mother, he initially cried incessantly and would plead for her comfort. Afterwards he became increasingly withdrawn and unresponsive to human contact, developing “an institutionalized look.” By all accounts Kaczynski’s parents were warm and loving towards both him and younger brother David….

Comment by Liz

Kevin, these people are so sad and pathetic – can you see why they are a good study? Seems like they come from the same molds as Beck and LImbaugh. I wonder if they had the same dysfunctional upbringing as Beck did. I’m not sure about Limbaugh, but I know he has a bad drug addiction that he has to fight off daily. Beck freely admits his past drug abuse. I wish these right-wingnuts would talk about their past drug use – they are the Woodstock generation after all. Probably included some hallucinogens!

If anyone wants to “fess up” I would be thrilled.

Comment by Liz

Did the Unabomber use hallocinogens? They tend to make you paranoid later in life! I wonder!

Comment by carolynro

It sounds like he suffered from some sort of psychological disaffective disorder rather than from any political party affiliation that his parents may or may not have had.

Watch CNN tonight and listen to the servicemen talking about how bad the morale is there – and why they wonder what they are doing there! They want to come home! Obama wants to bring them home. We never should have been there in the first place. Doesn’t it make you glad that McCain is not in charge? Imagine how the national deficit would have grown with all the war spending he would have done?

We need to protect our own borders – not theirs. They don’t want us there. At last we have an administration that can think! I’m very relieved about that!

Comment by Liz

You are so immature and you want me to believe you have any kind of degree??? That’s quite a stretch! This is not like high school – more like middle school! HOOT HOOT

Everyone here copies and pastes from far-right websites – and that’s about the extent of their real knowledge. I post links to the White House! If you want real information go there, otherwise STFU jerk! (see, anyone can be called names – makes you look super-intelligent doesn’t it?)

Comment by John

Obummer told us that Afganistan was the war of necessity, or did you forget that about your fearless leader who can’t make a decision. Let the troops dangle and wonder why the morale is low. Get a grip.

Comment by Liz

Listen to CNN tonight! Obama knows what he’s doing. No one else has the info. he has and no one should be second-guessing what he’s doing. His transparency has been excellent up to this point. He lets us know on a “need to know” basis about what’s going on. There are some things about war that can’t be discussed on Cable TV, so they shouldn’t be. If you listen to anyone’s opinion (especially ignorant Liz Cheney), then you are getting severe misinformation.

Comment by Liz

If you listen to Fox, you will hear that the morale is low because they need more soldiers. If you listen to CNN or any other news network you will hear that the morale is low because the troops think we are not having any affect over there…and that’s the real story!

Comment by Liz

Most Americans are not war-mongers! Usually conservatives are not either – but this is a morphed “conservative party” that real conservatives really don’t recognize or identify with.

Comment by John

No one ever second guessed Bush. Did they? What a pile of BS!!!

Comment by Liz

No, Bush pretty much got his way, didn’t he? He didn’t listen to objections and he didn’t listen to or talk to the people the way Obama does. How many times did you hear him speak? Not many! And when he did, he usually put his foot in his mouth! LMAO!

Comment by John

Yeah he knew how to make a decision and didn’t go golfing and allow Afganistan to get worse while he talked and talked and talked and talked and talked……………………………………………………..

Comment by Liz

Just try to read straightforward, unbiased news and decide for yourself…..don’t let FOX do it for you!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091101/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_us_afghanistan

Comment by Liz

You don’t know what you’re talking about – what do you mean by worse? It’s a very complex war – you can’t just use the word “worse” without specifying what you think is worse. I think we should be using drones in Pakistan to weed out the Taliban – and we should be working with the Afghan government – not against them.

Comment by John

Now you are the war expert? We are in trouble.

Comment by Liz

The Republican who dropped out is backing the Dem. candidate!!! Yay! LOLOLOL

On Sunday, Scozzafava issued a written statement in which she backed Democrat Bill Owens.

“I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same,” she said. “In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.”

Hoffman and Owens are competing for the 23rd Congressional District seat formerly held by Republican John McHugh, who was lured away by the Obama administration to be Army secretary.

Comment by Liz

How are we in trouble? Obama won’t listen to me! I’m just repeating what my cousin told me – he thinks we need to be out of there – and he was there for almost 2 years.

They betrayed her – so she betrayed them! I love it!!!

Even before Scozzafava’s fall, Republicans looking to broaden the base by attracting more centrist candidates worried that the harsh tone in the 23rd spelled trouble for the future, particularly the 2010 midterm elections.
“If we don’t get some adult supervision, basically the party could explode and split itself up,” said former Virginia Rep. Tom Davis, chief executive of the Republican Main Street Partnership, just days before Scozzafava withdrew.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had the same concern, and that’s why he endorsed Scozzafava early in the race. As other Republicans threw their support behind Hoffman’s momentum, Gingrich argued that the party needed to be more inclusive of moderates if it had a hope of retaking the majority.

He told The Associated Press he was disappointed, and “deeply upset” that Scozzafava endorsed Owens.

Abdullah’s departure underscores the problems of the young democracy, which is being kept alive by western troops and afloat by international aid: the legitimacy of its government remains in question.

Despite a $300 million investment to fund the elections and the dispatch of tens of thousands troops to secure polling places, western nations will not get the credible winner they hoped could help rally the Afghan people and regain momentum against a powerful Taliban -led insurgency.

“The next step must be to bring the electoral process to a conclusion in a legal and timely manner,” said Kai Eide of Norway , who heads the U.N. mission in Afghanistan .

“It is now a matter for the Afghan authorities to decide on a way ahead that brings this electoral process to a conclusion in line with the Afghan constitution, ” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended the search for a second Navy pilot whose plane disappeared off the Texas coast on Wednesday.

The Coast Guard said it suspended the search Sunday evening.

Coast Guard searchers had found the body of the other pilot who was aboard the aircraft on Friday when a floating rig’s crew reported something in the water.

The Navy had said that 29-year-old Lt. John Joseph Houston, of Houston and 30-year-old Lt. Bret Travis Miller of East Troy, Wis., were on board the Navy T-34C Turbomentor training plane. The Navy had declined to say which man’s body was found.

The Dems are more Libertarian when it comes to war. As for healthcare, they would let the free markets handle it if the free markets would behave like free markets…but first they have to make that happen by enforcing anti-trust laws. Are you comprehending any of this? I hope so, but I doubt it.

The underlying story about New York 23 is Obama took a republican from that district into the White House to try to clear the path for a democrat in this election. The republican candidate- a very liberal one- was put up because she is good buds with fellow Assemblywoman and Clinton County Republican Party Chair Janet Duprey. Scozzafava has an extremelly liberal voting record.

Comment by carolynro

It is amusing that the republican party is characterized as “riddled with infighting”‘ over this emergence of the Conservative Party candidate. However, it is more amusing that nary a word is said about how Obama, with the keys to the entire kingdom, can’t herd his democrats into voting for all of his plans lickety-split before the rest of the country wakes up to what he is up to.

I don’t know what Beck’s problem was with drugs-and alcohol-however Rush got hooked on Oxicotin-from severe back pain-It is a very strong painkiller that hooked many many people-drs.prescribe this very strong drug for only a certain amount of time and then the patient is hooked and cannot get the prescription-it is a visicious cycle.
Now LIZZIE-how come it’s not alright for them to be recovering drug addicts-but it’s alright for the far lefty socialists to be.as I do believe most of that party are drug addicts period or recovering -like our President who addmited to waking up in the streets of NEW YORK-drugged out of his mind and said no more-then slithered his way through the socialist party. WHY IS THAT ACCEPTABLE and you never mention his drug addiction-how about stopping all the Beck,Limbaugh drug bashing as you say are just mere personalities not the PRESIDENT.

I honestly HOPE Limbaugh SUES some of the media who slandered him concerning the NFL controversy. He already received an apology from Rick Sanchez. So they can’t deny that they jumped the gun. THEY LIED ON HIM. STRAIGHT UP! I am no lawyer, but I suspect he has a case if he wants to persue it. Wouldn’t that be FUNNY if some of those ditzos from MSNBC had to pay out a whopping sum of money to a guy to needs it a lot less than they do? I guarantee it would slow the outrageous, libelous, and slanderous “reporting” that these MAKE BELIEVE news organizations do.

Did anyone hear the interview Limbaugh did with Chris Wallace? Honestly the man has more intelligence in his brain stem than Obumma has in his entire head. Moreover, he also has GUTS. He and O’Reilly (Gee, wouldn’t THAT be a great ticket in 2012!) would go on NO apology tours like the current White House cowardly, wimp has done. Finally, they would tell the truth at least MOST of the time, I believe. They would be like Joe Wilson (a hero, in my book) because they have the intestinal fortitude to say what needs to be said and to do what needs to be done. To please N.O.W (tee-hee), they could appoint Ann Coulter as their Secretary of State.
I am obviously not being serious. But as ridiculous as this line-up might be, I honestly believe they WOULD be, IN FACT, better that the folks we have in power now. I think one of US (yes, US!) would do a better job than Obungle and his group of ninkempoops.

Remember this-even if we all went to the conservative side-those that want to can still find our way back to a middle-once the socialist leftist(which really are a minority-stinky,nasty minority-)get a stronghold on this country-we are lost, there would be no trying to get back to a middle because they would not let us.period.

London (dpa) – Singer Elton John was on Sunday being treated in hospital for a severe case of the flu and a bacterial infection, according to British media reports.

The 62-year old singer announced on his website that he has had to cancel three more concerts on the advice of his doctors. He was admitted to a London hospital after his health deteriorated Friday.

His partner David Furnish told the Daily Mail that the singer was doing well.

Since October 23, John has cancelled several performances during his Red Piano Tour of Britain and Ireland after he caught he came down with the flu.

His illness results in a second postponement of a planned concert with Billy Joel in the United States. The Face 2 Face Tour had originally been scheduled for June but postponed to November after Joel became ill with the flu.

Now, if you can show me your vast experience in military tactics, operations, along with your years of training to conduct combat operations in a war zone, then I will listen to you. Since I know you have none and I at least have 13 years of training in the matters of military operations, I’ll take my experience over your blather any day. As I am sure many others would concur.

McChrystal was appointed by Obama-whether he listens to him or not is not the point any longer-while he is procrastinating we have had the worst troop loss ever this month.Because the Muslim terrorists know we have a weak President-He talks the talk,he does not walk the walk. The Afghan war was just campaign talk like everything else in his campaign-just talk. I did fall for it though-because I always felt it should have been the Afghan war and not the Iraq war-The taliban was in afghanistan. Here LIZZIE is your straight answer-he cannot procrastinate any longer-the Afghan election is over-if our troops were not in jeopardy as shown this past month-then he could have the luxury of his so called strategy-however our troops and their families are having lots of anxiety as to what is going to happen-are they going to get support or not-to me IN or OUT-I support them and bless them for protecting us and our freedom as generation of troops before them have done.

Why are you afraid of the Taliban? LMAO! Where did you learn how to think? That’s about the most ignorant statement I’ve ever heard – could you possibly be as stupid as you sound?

Comment by Liz

President Barack Obama insists that the U.S. mission in Afghanistan is about “making sure that al Qaeda cannot attack the U.S. homeland and U.S. interests and our allies” or “project violence against” American citizens. The reasoning is that if the Taliban win in Afghanistan, al Qaeda will once again be able to set up shop there to carry out its dirty work. As the president puts it, Afghanistan would “again be a base for terrorists who want to kill as many of our people as they possibly can.” This argument is constantly repeated but rarely examined; given the costs and risks associated with the Obama administration’s plans for the region, it is time such statements be given the scrutiny they deserve.

Multiple sources, including Lawrence Wright’s book The Looming Tower, make clear that the Taliban was a reluctant host to al Qaeda in the 1990s and felt betrayed when the terrorist group repeatedly violated agreements to refrain from issuing inflammatory statements and fomenting violence abroad. Then the al Qaeda-sponsored 9/11 attacks — which the Taliban had nothing to do with — led to the toppling of the Taliban’s regime. Given the Taliban’s limited interest in issues outside the “AfPak” region, if they came to power again now, they would be highly unlikely to host provocative terrorist groups whose actions could lead to another outside intervention. And even if al Qaeda were able to relocate to Afghanistan after a Taliban victory there, it would still have to operate under the same siege situation it presently enjoys in what Obama calls its “safe haven” in Pakistan.

The very notion that al Qaeda needs a secure geographic base to carry out its terrorist operations, moreover, is questionable. After all, the operational base for 9/11 was in Hamburg, Germany. Conspiracies involving small numbers of people require communication, money, and planning — but not a major protected base camp.

There are many more Islamics in the world than Christians.

=================================

Is this person as stupid as they sound?

Comment by Liz

At present, al Qaeda consists of a few hundred people running around in Pakistan, seeking to avoid detection and helping the Taliban when possible. It also has a disjointed network of fellow travelers around the globe who communicate over the Internet. Over the last decade, the group has almost completely discredited itself in the Muslim world due to the fallout from the 9/11 attacks and subsequent counterproductive terrorism, much of it directed against Muslims. No convincing evidence has been offered publicly to show that al Qaeda Central has put together a single full operation anywhere in the world since 9/11. And, outside of war zones, the violence perpetrated by al Qaeda affiliates, wannabes, and lookalikes combined has resulted in the deaths of some 200 to 300 people per year, and may be declining. That is 200 to 300 too many, of course, but it scarcely suggests that “the safety of people around the world is at stake,” as Obama dramatically puts it.

In addition, al Qaeda has yet to establish a significant presence in the United States. In 2002, U.S. intelligence reports asserted that the number of trained al Qaeda operatives in the United States was between 2,000 and 5,000, and FBI Director Robert Mueller assured a Senate committee that al Qaeda had “developed a support infrastructure” in the country and achieved both “the ability and the intent to inflict significant casualties in the U.S. with little warning.” However, after years of well funded sleuthing, the FBI and other investigative agencies have been unable to uncover a single true al Qaeda sleeper cell or operative within the country. Mueller’s rallying cry has now been reduced to a comparatively bland formulation: “We believe al Qaeda is still seeking to infiltrate operatives into the U.S. from overseas.”

Even that may not be true. Since 9/11, some two million foreigners have been admitted to the United States legally and many others, of course, have entered illegally. Even if border security has been so effective that 90 percent of al Qaeda’s operatives have been turned away or deterred from entering the United States, some should have made it in — and some of those, it seems reasonable to suggest, would have been picked up by law enforcement by now. The lack of attacks inside the United States combined with the inability of the FBI to find any potential attackers suggests that the terrorists are either not trying very hard or are far less clever and capable than usually depicted.

‘Legitimate Leader’

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs earlier yesterday said Karzai is the “legitimate leader” of the country. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said today in Morocco the U.S. will support Karzai “but we’re expecting more” including a “serious effort against corruption.”

The declaration of Karzai as victor has “defused much of the uncertainty” and “provides the international community with a partner to work with,” Jan Zalewski, a London-based Afghanistan analyst at political risk consultants IHS Global Insight, said in an e-mail.

Administration officials have said the political credibility of Afghanistan’s government is crucial to the success of U.S. efforts to stabilize the country and defeat extremists.

Gibbs said the president will make a decision in the “next few weeks” about the future course in Afghanistan, including whether to send more American troops to fight in the war, now in its eighth year.

US Troops

The U.S. has committed 68,000 troops to the Afghanistan conflict and Obama is weighing whether to send as many as 40,000 more. The administration also is pressing other members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to put more resources into the fight.

Obama has been meeting with his top military and foreign policy advisers to discuss options for Afghanistan and recommendations made by General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces there.
Obama said he emphasized to Karzai “that the American people and the international community as a whole want to continue to partner with him and his government.”

IndyJoe, if you’re not a disguise (an alias), I’ll just comment that you, obviously, are not very old. You don’t remember Viet Nam, Korea, the Berlin Wall, the invasions of Czechoslovakia and Hungary, and Stalin’s atrocities. You’ve never lost a loved on in either of the two wars I just cited. You’ve never spoken to any of the thousands of people who risked their lives trying to get by the wall in Berlin in order to get to the west to have a better life.

Sterling, people who have no religious affiliation usually say they are Christian in the USA!

This is a lie, and you are just trying to stir up trouble. There is no fact based in your statement. If you have no religious affiliation, you say so, especially in today’s PC socialistic society.

And you either are a socialist or you are not. If you are not, you reject socialism, including socialized health care.

If the standard of success is economic competitiveness, it should be pointed out that Canada enjoys an economic advantage in having universal medicare. Canadian medicare has caused a more active, healthier work force. This force is thus available to potential investors and employers, who, because of medicare, can build businesses in Canada without having to complexly negotiate with unions and insurance companies to insure their employees for most surgical or medical expenses. Thus the cost of benefits to employees is significantly less to private companies in Canada than it is to private companies in the United States.

Canada is capitalist!

Opposition to health care reform doubles after Pelosi’s bill released. It’s no wonder people oppose it. The Wall Street Journal this morning called the Pelosi bill “The Worst Bill Ever,” with a subheadline “Epic new spending and taxes, pricier insurance, rationed care, dishonest accounting: The Pelosi health bill has it all.”
And this is reflected in Rasmussen’s poll. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced the House version of health care reform legislation last week, but most voters are still opposed to the effort.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 42% now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s down from 45% a week ago but unchanged from two weeks ago.
Fifty-four percent (54%) now oppose the legislative effort, up three points since last week.

Seventy-three percent (73%) of liberals support the plan, but just 18% of conservatives agree.

Only 23% of all voters Strongly Support the plan while nearly twice as man (44%) are Strongly Opposed.

Comment by freckle1971

The Worst Bill Ever
Epic new spending and taxes, pricier insurance, rationed care, dishonest accounting: The Pelosi health bill has it all.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reportedly told fellow Democrats that she’s prepared to lose seats in 2010 if that’s what it takes to pass ObamaCare, and little wonder. The health bill she unwrapped last Thursday, which President Obama hailed as a “critical milestone,” may well be the worst piece of post-New Deal legislation ever introduced.

In a rational political world, this 1,990-page runaway train would have been derailed months ago. With spending and debt already at record peacetime levels, the bill creates a new and probably unrepealable middle-class entitlement that is designed to expand over time. Taxes will need to rise precipitously, even as ObamaCare so dramatically expands government control of health care that eventually all medicine will be rationed via politics.

Comment by Just Another Blogger

How can anyone say he or she is not a socialist if they support Obama’s policies? You cannot love socialism without being a socialist! He wants a lot more than socialized medicine. He wants to spread the wealth from the “haves to the have nots”. He wants to de-incentivise America. He wants to equalize us all. Of course the only way to do that is to make the rich poorer; since the economy is in such a flux now, it is unlikely that the poor will get richer. The Feds now own a large slice of the business sector; and they’re getting ready to own a lot more of it. It is socialism in it purest form. “From each according to his ability; to each according to his need.”

Indy Joe (Lizard)….the world you want to create already exists…..in Venezuela, N. Korea, China, Russia and Iran….and in most of the Muslim world……why don’t you talk to some of those people before you decide to try to convert this country into that?
Cuba is doing extremely well? What color is the sky in your little world?
And no….you are not a socialist….you are a communist!
I feel very afraid and sorry for you…..your “ideals” will create a world in which you will not want to live….because it will take away your rights (to even be here expressing your opinion) one by one, day by day….and then you will wonder what happened? So very sad that you know no better than that!
And while you are at it….check on the tax levels in your “perfect examples of socialist countries” around the world. You might also check the suicide rate in those same countries.
You are a complete encyclopedia of ignorance.
If you are the future of this country….we are, indeed, truely doomed.

Comment by Jimmy

But…..I’m just an old, useless, ignorant person ….according to you. BUt I believe in the ideals and values that made this the greatest country in the world…..the country that always was a shining example…..the country that people died trying to get to.
Those ideals will resurface in today’s election, in 2010, and esp. in 2012. The backlash is coming. I hope you are prepared, and embrace it….because it is the only thing that will save you…..and give you the right’s you so foolishly abuse and admonish. I guess we even have to protect fools like you….because you certainly don’t know how to protect yourself….or your own future.
BUt …hey….call up the WH…I’m sure they can get you on a flight to your precious Cuba, along with some Hollywood gasbag….let’s just hope it’a a one-way trip….send us a letter and let us know how you like it there….if they will let you!

Actually lIz,

No I am not avoiding the question you asked, like you did for 2 weeks over the insult that I stated the higher education was a waste of time. I never said that and you ignored my request to provide the quote. Which you could not in any case.

But what I am not going to let you do is avoid the question that I asked first because you want to change the subject.

You started the Afghan thing, I didn’t, but you started with war time operations and even claimed I had no knowledge of such things, in so many words.

I asked for your background on the subject. Do you have as much as Obama and Biden? That means you have none.

I on the other hand have training in jungle warfare, desert warfare, urban warfare along with training in POW operations and various other duties assigned to Military Police. I have been a squad leader, team leader and platoon SGT as well as various operations leaders for the Headquarters.

Once you admit you have no knowledge or provide the base of your knowledge of combat operations, then we can talk about that, moving on afterward to the political side of the situation.

If, as I suspect, you have no knowledge of the combat situation, that would mean there is no common frame of reference in which I could make you understand the subject.

You see – I made my point. No one posts here except to argue with me!

Sterling, you said that if I wasn’t a socialist I wouldn’t back socialist healthcare – that is just a stupid statement – like pretty much everything you say! ALL other developed (capitalist) countries have socialized healthcare – we are the only ones who don’t!

Chas, what are you, a retired marine? Why won’t you answer my questions about Afghanistan? Alisyn doesn’t care about this blog except during her showtimes. That’s when she wants everyone to stay on subject.

Jimmy, I know you are into conspiracy theories – just like Dog and a few others here. That’s ok. You probably did drugs when you were young as well, so I understand. You need therapy to get over the paranoia – maybe some meds too. I’m sure Glenn Beck will have some advice for you – when he decides to go back into therapy.

I’m collecting all kinds of interesting (and very weird) ideas! It’s fun! If I don’t post here, no one does – not much anyway!

You started this Afghan thing. I’m not moving until you answer me. You way too often start something and then change the subject once the topic goes against you.

I am standing fast here. Answer me or just ignore me.

What is YOUR background in military operations, I have given you mine.

chas

Comment by Liz

I don’t need a background in military operations to answer you. All I need to know is “do we need to be there, and for what?” How do you figure I need a military background? That’s ludicrous! I don’t want troops in unnecessary danger – and that’s the situation over there now! You give me a good reason for us to be there!

Comment by Liz

The Taliban poses no threat to us. I watched a video my cousin s h o t while riding in a military vehicle and we could hear their basecamp being shelled in the background. Not only that, they have to watch out for roadside bombs all the time. It’s very dangerous and there is no clear-cut goal that they can see. That’s why morale is at an all time low over there.

Now, are you going to answer me or not?

Comment by Liz

BTW – wordpress will not print the word s-h-o-t – so space it out.

Maybe you didn’t say that higher education was not important but I think you agreed with Carolynro when she said she didn’t think it was! She said she didn’t care that Limbaugh and Beck had no credentials – she just liked their message – maybe because they are as cranky as she is!

The population of endangered green sea turtles at SeaWorld in San Diego grew by 82 in October when the eggs hatched on Shipwreck Beach without human help.

There hasn’t been such happy turtle news at SeaWorld since 2003, when 21 sea turtles got an assist from park staff, said Tim Downing, assistant curator of fishes.

This time, the park let nature take its course and didn’t incubate the eggs. The babies started poking through their ping pong-sized eggs on Oct. 5. Since then, they have been getting a diet of squid, krill, shrimp and special pellets.

The birth of the baby turtles was announced Monday. Downing said they are in excellent health and should go on display at the park before the end of the year.

Comment by chas

So what you don’t know and what you think are more important than the facts?

That is just foolishness. The taliban itself is not a threat to us, either was Malosovitch(sp?), but liberals felt it was worth sending and keeping Troops there for over a decade, (we are still there “keeping the peace”).

To pull out prior to having a firmly established government there would simply allow ObL to move back in and start all over again. He doesn’t need a Country to plan out attacks, but you can bet your arse that he’d rather move out of the cave he is living in.

Right or wrong we went in and unless you want to walk away from our previous commitment, our past dealings with war, such as the marshal plan, then we have no choice but to leave the place in better shape than it was when we arrived.

As far as the military aspect of why we should remain until the job is done is obviously beyond your limited understanding, so I won’t bother to address that part of it.

The political aspects I will cover later.

Like Obama said, we can’t watch over the world, and the world shouldn’t expect us to. We do need peacekeeping forces in some areas, but we don’t need to be aggressively fighting there. It’s not in our best interests. I think Bin Laden has been dead for a long time, but we will never know when he died. I think their gov’t. will always be in turmoil and corrupt – there’s nothing we can do about the way they operate in the middle east – chaotic at best.

Comment by Liz

How do you figure 3 strikes for the Dems? All they needed was the congressional seat. and they got it. I think the people realized what a dimwit Hoffman is – and aligning himself with Glenn Beck did him in. That’s my opinion anyway. Politicians shouldn’t align themselves with “entertainers”! That’s ludicrous – and the people saw that.

Governors are a different story – each state is different. I wouldn’t vote for my Democratic governor again because she’s not doing a good job – and I’d vote for a Republican rather than her if I liked his message. But I’m Independent and I’ve done that before. I vote for the best person for the job. Exit polls showed that’s exactly what happened in both states.

PAW PAW, Mich. – A new law takes effect in early December making it illegal to give a shout-out to an inmate at the Van Buren County Jail. A century-old section of the jail in the heart of Paw Paw has no air conditioning, so its barred windows are opened in warm weather. The wing stands only a few feet from the sidewalk, separated from it by a tall chain-link fence crowned by spirals of razor wire.

The open windows serve as an open invitation for some people to stand outside and yell for their friends and loved ones inside. Sometimes they hold entire conversations together.

Sheriff Dale Gribler asked county commissioners for help. They adopted an ordinance in September that makes shouting at inmates a misdemeanor – punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

It is 3 strikes against the Democrats because:

1. Republicans won in Virginia by a LANDSLIDE, whereas Obama won by, what, 6 points in ‘08? That
means the Dumbocrats lost about 28 points in that state.
2. Republicans won in New Jersey, a state with a hugely LIBERAL population. There’s NO WAY any
liberal, no matter how good a B.S. artist he or she is, can say that this election is not bad news for
them (HEE-HEE-HEE-HA-HA-HA-HEE-HEE-HA!)
3. Although the Democrats managed to save the seat in New York, they didn’t win by nearly as large
a margin that they SHOULD have, given the fact that the Republican ticket was SPLIT between
Hoffman and the two faced phony Republicrat, what’s her name.

It’s bad news for the Washington Depravocrats because it conveys a loud message about the health care bill. It these turkey’s vote for this monstrosity, they may be committing political martyrdom in ‘10. I don’t know about the rest of you (tee-hee) but I am LAUGHING MY A– OFF!

I have a wild theory about our friend, Liz. I don’t think she is a liberal blogger that is has been planted in our midst to disrupt us and drive us away. I admit that is what I DID believe. Now, I am suspecting something REALLY wild. I think she is a FOX plant. I know, I know. You think I’m insane. I may be, indeed. Nevertheless, I have to wonder. She knows ALL ABOUT FOX. But it was something she wrote in a previous post that got me thinking. She made the remark that if she were not on the blog, we would all get bored and leave; because all of us would agree with one another. I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SAY THIS (GOD HELP ME!) BUT I THINK SHE’S RIGHT! I am wondering if FOX has put her with us to stir us up and force us to keep the comments going! After all, have you ever wondered why Fox bothers with this blog anyway? Why? It MUST be to find out what “the folks” are thinking. It gives them topics to explore and talk about. If this is the case (and I admit that it probably isn’t), I want to assure Fox that anytime they want our brilliance to shine on them, all they need to do is ask. We belong to the world. Since we are the ones with most of the answers, I understand if they want to convey these solutions to a country in need. All they have to do is ask. So, this sheds a whole new light on our friend, Liz. She just wants to learn from us. Let’s try to be more understanding, gang. I personally will respond to her amicably every time she inquires.

Those elections had NOTHING to do with Obama! Exit polls proved that – it was about the states, not the federal gov’t. Governors and mayors have no input in Washington! The one wild card went in favor of the Dems – the New York 23 race!

Heck, even I’m planning on voting Republican in the next governor’s race, unless the Dems. in this state come up with someone outstanding – and I don’t think they will.

Comment by Just Another Blogger

I’ll bet the Congressional leaders in New Jersey and Virginia NOTICED the sudden and dramatic losses in the governors’ races. I’ll bet they’ll think a little harder about the health care joke that those clowns in D.C. are trying to jam down our throats. Obviously, you did not watch Hannity last night (You need watch him more often, Liz…for the sake of your own intellectual nourishment). Anyway, they interviewed possibly 20-30 Virginia voters. MOST of them stated EMPHATICALLY that the practices of the Washington imbeciles influenced their votes. I know that’s a bitter pill for you to swallow Liz; but try to get it down. It’ll be good for you.

Incidentally, what do you poor folks do who do NOT live in West Virginia. Our great state has a lower unemployment rate than most others. Plus, we can actually see STARS, and TREES, and WILDFLOWERS, etc. What do folks in Michigan do now that your auto industry belongs to the federal govenment? Bingo? Swimming in your ecoli polluted Great Lake? I don’t blame you. I’d kiss the government’s butt too. They’re the ones who control your paychecks (those of you who HAVE a paycheck).

You believe that, like the Dems did to Viet Nam, we should just walk away?

I want to understand your position, because despite what you say, yes you do need an understanding of military operations in order to have a decent conversation of the topic. Your answer to this will explain it.

Chas, to add to your posts, Theatre Area Commanders interact with the political parts of a country…The Ambassador, the CIA, The Country President and their military leaders. General officers are confirmed by the Senate because they represent the United States and not the US Military. The Senior Service Schools (Command and Staff College and War College) spend a lot of time on geopolitical topics. All General Officers have been through these and most have masters degrees and some have PhD’s.

Sorry, I’m not on the fringe – I’m right in the middle – a moderate independent – but to you I might as well be on the left-wing “looney” fringe because you people are why the GOP is going down — fringe is out — except on your old bell-bottoms!

Last night’s NY 23 race decided that for sure! Ultra-conservatives are OUT OUT OUT! I bet they won’t campaign for another one!

Chas, unless and until they can come up with a good reason for us to fight in Afghanistan, I am for pulling out – except peacekeeping forces, as needed. Nobody wins there…ever! It’s money down the drain that could be used here for stimulus!!!

Funny, you guys don’t complain about the cost of the war – billions per week for eight years – but who cares, right?

I see, so you are for pulling out. The cost in human lives will mean nothing to you?

The fact that Lord knows how many women will suffer at the hands of the Taliban once we pull out and they regain rule. means nothing to you?

This is very much like what happened in Nam. Once the Dems pulled the defense funding, (we had kicked out the North and the South was holding them out as we pulled out), it cost one million of their lives and another 2 million ended up “re-education” camps.

The fact that every women that ran for political office will most likely be stoned, is just fine with you.

The fact that any women who failed to wear the mandatory clothing will most likely face the same sentence is perfectly OK with you?

Because most of what I just posted here was the result when the Soviets “gave up” because the going got tough. Their pull out was what let the Taliban take over.

And once the world media gets word of what happens when we cut and run, you think your kool aid buddy Obooboo will find our status in the world improved?

If that is the case, then the political question is irrelevant, because you are asking the United States to re-do Viet Nam and expect a different result. You are condemning a lot of people to a barbaric death. Sleep well with that. I don’t want to.

That is the absolutely dumbest statement you have ever made.

Read about the 60’s and why LBJ elected not to run for another term. An expensive war, that became unpopular when coupled with far left socialization of Government power.

BTW, the reason that the GOP is having problems getting elected is NOT that they are right wing, it is because they try and impersonate a moderate. Given the choice of elected a pretend Democrat and a Republican trying to be a Democrat, the Dem will win ever time.

Getting away from the small Gov’t low tax is what killed the GOP. They just haven’t caught on to that yet.

Chas!!!!you can’t reason with a rock>>>>>> Lizzie makes dumb statements all the time

Comment by Liz

Yeah chas – that’s how the GOP tries to stop PROGRESS! I always backfires on them though – thankfully. The AARP is going to endorse this bill…..

With no Republican backing for the measure, Democrats will need overwhelming support from their own. A festering intra-party disagreement over how to prevent federal funds from being used to pay for abortion remained unresolved Wednesday morning.

The House bill is estimated to expand coverage to about 96 percent of eligible Americans. Beginning in 2013, it would provide government subsidies to extend coverage to tens of millions who now lack it, and ban insurance company practices such as denying coverage to people with pre-existing medical problems.
For the three years before the federal aid starts flowing, the bill would set up a temporary “high-risk pool” through which people who have been denied coverage because of poor health could obtain a government-subsidized policy.

The bill would set up health insurance “exchanges” through which self-employed people and small businesses could buy coverage, either from a private insurer or a new government plan that would compete. All the plans sold through the exchange would have to follow basic consumer protection rules, making it easier to shop and compare among them.

Comment by Liz

The majority of middle-class Americans covered under big employer plans would not see dramatic changes. But coverage for the poor through Medicaid would be significantly expanded.

Seniors in traditional Medicare would get improved preventive benefits. Also, the prescription coverage gap known as the “doughnut hole” would be gradually closed. However, seniors signed up for private insurance plans through Medicare could lose some benefits, as the bill scales back extra payments that the plans have been getting.

In addition to raising money by cutting payments to hospitals and other medical providers, the House bill boosts taxes on upper-income earners. Democrats also moved Tuesday to close a biofuel tax credit loophole, raising about $23 billion to help pay for the legislation.

The GOP picked up 2 governors last night and the Dems picked up 2 congressmen – I’d say the Dems. scored – and the GOP is hanging on by a thread.

Oops, I forgot. Gubbermint employees don’t have to pay social security – so what are you complaining about? They have their own retirement program – and it’s BETTER than social security, right? You bet it is!

The results show that, while not a backlash against Obooboo, it is the knowledge that Dems have been failing to properly administer their States.

Oh, and try again Lizzie, Nationalized Medicine got it’s start with medicare and medicade. Please stop making yourself look silly be arguing history with me. You aren’t in my league.

The lack of the Congress to pass the take over of the health care system this year means it moves the bill that much closer to election time. With the majority of Americans against the Government option, no Dem will vote for it in a State, most States, that doesn’t agree with the option. It’s called job over principle. Both parties suffer from it. It’s more important to be re-elected than it is to do the right thing, in this case kill the bill.

chas

Comment by carolynro

Well, since both programs are going bankrupt perhaps designing an entire health care system in way that will be run the exact same way would be an example of not learning from history. It would be a good idea to understand that the promises made that those programs would only cost $3 billion a year but now in fact cost $2 trillion. And read the link to see what happened with the Social Security Act.

It’s called the War Powers Act. The Congress in an attempt to absolved its self from the political fall out of unpopular wars gave over the power to call for action to the President.

It was passed in ‘73, I believe, and allows the Congress to complain about the Presidents action while still supplying the funds for the military actions. Dang smart those Dems, since it came about as a result of the Nam war and they started our involvement in that.

The highly technical contest brought teams from Missouri, Alaska and Seattle to Rogers Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert, most familiar to the public as a space shuttle landing site.

The contest requires their machines to climb 2,953 feet (nearly 1 kilometer) up a cable slung beneath a helicopter hovering nearly a mile high.

LaserMotive’s vehicle zipped up to the top in just over four minutes and immediately repeated the feat, qualifying for at least a $900,000 second-place prize.

Rasmussen Reports
49% Blame Bush for Economy, 45% Blame Obama
Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Voters for the first time are blaming President Obama nearly as much as President Bush for the country’s continuing economic problems.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 49% still blame the economic situation on the recession that began under Bush. But 45% now say the nation’s economic problems are caused more by Obama’s policies.
Just a month ago, 55% pointed the finger at Bush, while only 37% said the policies Obama has put in place since taking office were at fault. These findings had remained largely unchanged since May.

Comment by carolynro

For the 13th straight month, the Rasmussen Employment Index finds that the percentage of firms laying off employees exceeds the number that are hiring.

Eighty-four percent (84%) of conservatives trust themselves more, but 56% of liberals have more confidence in the president.
Questions linger about the effectiveness of the $787-billion economic stimulus plan proposed by the president and passed by Congress in February. Some in Congress are considering a second stimulus plan to fight the country’s growing unemployment problem, but 62% of voters oppose the passage of another economic stimulus package this year.

Just 42% now support the health care reform plan proposed by Obama and congressional Democrats. Most voters expect the plan if passed to drive up health care costs and hurt quality and expect a middle-class tax hike to pay for it.
For nearly four-out-of-five voters, the bigger problem for the country is not their unwillingness to pay higher taxes. It’s their elected representatives’ refusal to cut government spending.

THe congressional races were much more important because they represent votes in Congress that affect everyone!

Obama has great caottails…and FOX can’t stand it. Rasmussen comes out with polls almost before the news comes out. How do they do that? Their polls are right-biased. You have to look at the “average” of all the polls, and the average has Obama approval in the mid-50’s.

Health Care Reform Assumes Millions Would Pay Fine Rather Than Get Coverage

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated in its study last week that the House health care bill would bring in $167 billion over 10 years in penalties from those who don’t get coverage.

So this bill is not about health care, as many of us have been saying……It is about money money money mon-ey!

Thanks to liberals we have out of control teen pregnancy, 2 to 3 million abortions each year, sexual depravity, AIDS, dysfunctional families, criminals who thumb their noses at the law, dictators who are probably making fun of us, out of control, insane spending, and a prevalent sense of entitlement that that has removed any ambition or initiative from far too many of our citizens. As I stated earlier, I am neither a Republican or Democrat. I am a registered independent. My personal opinion is that both parties tend to do what is best for THEM. Nor am I totally conservative or liberal. Whether I am conservative or liberal depends on the times we live in. At the present time, I believe we need to get rid of a lot of liberals, then add just as many conservatives to our ranks. However, in the past, I witnessed out of control conservative behavior too. Let’s not align ourselves so loyally to any one way of thinking. We need to adopt a position that lines up with the crises we face in the CURRENT world. We should not be narrow thinkers.
I have watched the rancor on this blog. I remind you that our opinions are not going to advance or slow anything that Washington does. We are only talking to one another via this blog. I am an old man now. I promise you that I spent too many precious moments trying to push myself and my wishes onto others. I have hurt people who should have been my friends. Life is too short to waste–even via a blog. Please stop this.

Comment by Liz

Liberals? What are you talking about? Those problems are ALL from the “conservative” , liberal-spending GW Bush admin. Clint, you are thinking backwards! Bush was forcing teen girls to get pregnant! LOL He loved to pizz off all the dictators in the world, let in zillions of illegal aliens (to take the jobs Americans don’t want), gave our Social Security to illegal aliens, let criminals out of crowded jails….and the list goes on and on! Stop making me laugh!

Comment by Clint

Yes, Liz. But I am concerned now that, in our FEAR of “pizzing off” the dictators, we are allowing them to run over us. And I must respectfully ask you…how does anyone FORCE teenage girls to get pregnant? Did President Bush rape them? No, Liz. American teenagers are getting pregnant because of American culture that has gotten much too permissive (i.e. liberal) in recent decades. We seem to have a mentality that says everything is okay and everything is normal. We seem to argue that what is right for one is wrong for another (i.e. everything is relative). I beg to differ. Some things are absolute. No child should be the mother of another. We should stop making excuses for sexual irresponsibility, saying it is someone else’s fault. Sooner or later, we are all held accountable for bad decisions we make. If I fail to pay my electric bill, for example, my lights are off. Yet, more and more, I’m hearing people make excuses. Excuses are a dime a dozen, and they’re cheap. It enables cowards to remain thus. We also need to stop making excuses for the insane dictators of this world who want to kill as many Americans as they can. Simply arguing that we need to “understand them” is not working. Bush was not my favorite president; but he wasn’t a coward. And he was not so devoid of common sense that he believed we could stave off terrorists by kissing up to them, apologizing to them, and cowering behind hypocritical pretenses of empathy and reason.

You can voice your opinion but you can’t shove it down anyone else’s throat. The statements you made about liberals were ridiculous! You are stereotyping them, and you can’t lump everyone into some group you deem to be “immoral”. Most Democrats are responsible, compassionate Christians. They don’t believe in abortion any more than conservatives do.

The only reason I said Bush forces teenage girls to get pregnant was to point out the “craziness” of your statement. Sure, you’d like to blame liberals for everything you don’t like about the society you live in – they are an easy target for you. You need to learn how to re-think because that’s simply NOT true! I could list tons of “immoral” acts committed by so-called religious “conservatives”, but I don’t stereotype them. There are bad apples in every bunch – and everyone doesn’t have the same standards and morals as you do. That doesn’t give you the right to make a blanket statement about a certain group or political party.

Obama’s Honduran debacle
Examiner Editorial
November 4, 2009

After months of ill-advised interference by the United States, two Honduran presidents are back on speaking terms. Interim leader Roberto Micheletti and the ousted Manuel Zelaya have reportedly reached an agreement that could return Zelaya to power as a lame duck for roughly one month, before a newly elected president takes office. President Obama may spin this as a U.S. victory, but in fact it’s the culmination of the administration’s mystifying diplomacy.

The deal still must be ratified by the Honduran Congress and Supreme Court (which legally removed him in the first place). The State Department is confident the Honduran legislators and judges will reinstate him. In any event, a department spokesman said, the U.S. will recognize the results of the regularly scheduled presidential election later this month. Neither Zelaya or Micheletti are candidates in the coming election.

There are some positives here. Even if Zelaya returns to power for a meaningless month, Micheletti has won the battle. Although the two men are from the same political party, Micheletti nonetheless deprived Zelaya of power for five critical months and thus blocked his illegal attempt to seek another term, something that is definitively banned by the Honduran constitution. Micheletti also guaranteed that constitutional elections will be held to replace Zelaya, no matter who is interim president. After November’s balloting, a legitimate new president will take power, mindful of the one-term limit imposed by the Honduran constitution.Still, this happy ending in no way justifies Obama’ bone-headed interference in Honduran internal affairs, which destabilized that nation’s political institutions and caused totally unnecessary violence and deaths.

His Honduran decisions make clear that Obama does not understand the true threat to democracy in today’s Latin America: It’s no longer guerrillas or generals of the 1980s, but rather elected presidents who weaken legal curbs on their own power and then refuse to step down. Exhibit A: Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez. Obama clearly was not promoting democracy in Honduras by instantly siding with Zelaya, who hoped to follow in Chavez’s footsteps and was actively aided in that effort by the Venezualan strong man. Even with a positive conclusion, however, this fiasco reinforces the impression Obama often left during last year’s campaign that he is inadequately prepared to make critical decisions on foreign policy.

Why do you think the UAE won’t get involved in the wars and politics of the middle east? Any ideas? They are rich and powerful and don’t seem to give a rats a– about anyone but themselves! Why is that?

His name appears on radical Internet postings. A fellow officer says he fought his deployment to Iraq and argued with soldiers who supported U.S. wars. He required counseling as a medical student because of problems with patients.

There are many unknowns about Nidal Malik Hasan, the man authorities say is responsible for the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base. Most of all, his motive. But details of his life and mindset, emerging from official sources and personal acquaintances, are troubling.

For six years before reporting for duty at Fort Hood, Texas, in July, the 39-year-old Army major worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center pursuing his career in psychiatry, as an intern, a resident and, last year, a fellow in disaster and preventive psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the military’s Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001.

While an intern at Walter Reed, Hasan had some “difficulties” that required counseling and extra supervision, said Dr. Thomas Grieger, who was the training director at the time.

A lot of the soldiers are depressed and wondering what we are doing in Afghanistan. I saw an interview last night on MSNBC and the guy said they are frustrated – and they get NO help from the Afghans. They are unappreciated and they see no point in what they’re doing. They’re not sure what they are trying to accomplish. It’s very sad.

Looks like the “staged rally” today got upstaged by the shootings at Ft. Hood.

At the height of the nationwide salmonella outbreak nearly a year ago, FBI agents raided two peanut plants and carried away boxes of evidence. FDA inspectors found roaches, mold and a leaky roof. Then, Congress revealed e-mails from the peanut company’s top executive that seemed to suggest the pursuit of profits over ensuring public safety.

Despite the fanfare over the criminal probe of one of the largest product recalls ever, no one has yet been charged in the outbreak, which was linked to hundreds of illnesses and nine deaths.

Federal prosecutions in food-illness outbreaks are rare, but food safety experts and legal analysts say the salmonella investigation seemed as cut-and-dry as any case.

After all, investigators said the head of the company at the center of the probe fired off e-mails to employees amid reports salmonella had been detected in his products to “turn them loose” and said the business “desperately” needed to turn raw peanuts into money.

All of that is very sad, but we can’t be responsible for it. You can’t dictate the behavior of a nation when their culture is so different, and their religion compels them to kill anyone that doesn’t agree with them and treat women as property. It’s very sad but we can’t stop it with 40,000 more troops. That is not our mission over there! DId you think it was? You are incredibly naive. We are not responsible for any mass slaughter in any country but our own. In fact we are probablyl directly responsible for the lives lost in Vietnam. We should have stayed out of that conflict as well.

Now, tell me why Saudi Arabia and the UAE don’t care about all the civil wars and conflicts in other countries in the middle east? Why don’t they get involved and stand up for human rights? You are listening to the GOP. They are desperate to make Obama look unsuccessful, when in fact they know his tactics are working beautifully. O’Reilly has said that a few times – although he has been called out for it by FOX.

If you are Libertarian, you sure don’t act like one! Seems to me you are more interested in the women of Afghanistan than you are in Americans who can’t afford health insurance. We have to take care of our own, not them!!! THEY don’t deserve it. I think we should have sanctions against all those warring countries.

Rasmussen Reports:

52% Say America’s Best Days Are In the Past, Highest Level in Two Years
Thursday, November 05, 2009
Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters feel that America’s best days are in the past, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. This marks the highest level of voter pessimism in two years and is up 13 points from a year ago when Barack Obama was elected president.

Thirty-five percent (35%) feel the nation’s best days are still to come, down 13 points since President Obama’s inauguration in January.

NO – I’m stating what I believe and watching your reaction to it! I have nothing against honest Republicans, but there’s not many around. I will vote for one if I can believe what they say – but I won’t vote for one who won’t compromise and do their job. I don’t like stalemates that stop progress, and neither do most Americans.. In other words, they need some moderates because most Americans are NOT ultra-conservative. They are going to have to learn that the hard way. Rasmussen should do a survey about that!

The GOP senators won’t even attend sessions about global warming. Yesterday, one showed up and stayed for 15 minutes. As far as I’m concerned, they should all be booted!

That’s right. Most Americans are JUST PLAIN CONSERVATIVE, 40% to be exact and the largest idealogical group in the country! That’s opposed to only 20% that are liberal and only a handful that are far, far, FAR LEFT RADICAL EXTREMIST LUNATIC FRINGERS LIKE YOU!!! Conservatives aka normal people are now the majority in every single state! Your buddy Morning Joe disagrees with you BTW, he also feels there are many facets of the war that make it necessary. You just don’t seem politically smart enough to follow all the different ebbs and flows of such things.

Any you are the last person that should mention the Founders, you have no clue what-so-ever what they had in mind. “US ‘planned attack on Taleban’”, BBC News, 18 September 2001.

‘A former Pakistani diplomat has told the BBC that the US was planning military action against Osama Bin Laden and the Taleban even before last week’s attacks [on the World Trade Center]. Niaz Naik, a former Pakistani Foreign Secretary, was told by senior American officials in mid-July that military action against Afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of October. Mr Naik said US officials told him of the plan at a UN-sponsored international contact group on Afghanistan which took place in Berlin. The wider objective, according to Mr Naik, would be to topple the Taleban regime and install a transitional government of moderate Afghans in its place – possibly under the leadership of the former Afghan King Zahir Shah. Mr Naik was told that Washington would launch its operation from bases in Tajikistan, where American advisers were already in place. He was told that Uzbekistan would also participate in the operation and that 17,000 Russian troops were on standby. Mr Naik was told that if the military action went ahead it would take place before the snows started falling in Afghanistan, by the middle of October at the latest.’

Carolynro and other Michiganders – this is for you!

The House of Representatives will be voting on the Health Care bill as early as today. This may be the last chance Americans have for this legislation for another generation. The Republicans have elected to stand on the sidelines and throw rocks, but the American People have sent an overwhelming number of Democrats to Washington to make it happen.

The freshman members of the House are under tremendous pressure from lobbyists, Fox Views, health insurance companies, and honest Americans who still don’t understand what health care is about because of right-wing disinformation. Let’s show Gary Peters that we are behind him in his support of the bill. Call him, send him emails, urge him to stand up for us as he always has. Don’t wait for tomorrow – there may be no tomorrow!

and an EVENT!

The time has come–this is a friendly reminder that this Saturday Nov. 7th you need to bring yourself and everyone you know carrying your favorite pro Health-care reform signs to the parking lot behind St. Johns Church at the corner of 11 mile and Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak, MI. check-in begins at 10:00 am event ends at 2 pm.

As we had previously anticipated—The Blue hair insurance industry puppets AKA the Tea Baggers are amassing by the hundreds perhaps thousands to protest our Rally—I believe this is a blatant showing of disrespect for the organizers and the American citizen alike—we have invited our Union friends the AFL-CIO and UAW—perhaps their members will enjoy sharing a few choice words with the enemy of the middle class and the American family alike–this is a great opportunity in going toe to toe with the same people who have strategically decimated the American Dream over the past 15 years.

This is your opportunity: the opportunity of a lifetime to help close the deal on U.S. Health-care reform legislation right here in S.E. Michigan at the recently named National Scenic Byway and all American road Woodward Ave.

Washington has indicated in advance that Congress plans to vote on Health-care reform legislation the evening after our event. It is essential that we do everything in our power to show up in force so that we do not miss any opportunity to capitalize on a large and diverse crowd!

Insensitivity Following Shooting

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/politics/A-Disconnected-President.html

A bad week for Democrats compounded by an awful moment for
President Obama didn’t wait long after Tuesday’s devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.

After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a “shout-out” to “Dr. Joe Medicine Crow — that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.” Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That’s the least that should occur.

Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before. That would have prevented any sort of jarring emotional switch at the event.

Did the president’s team not realize what sort of image they were presenting to the country at this moment? The disconnect between what Americans at home knew had been going on — and the initial words coming out of their president’s mouth was jolting, if not disturbing.

It must have been disappointing for many politically aware Democrats, still reeling from the election two days before. The New Jersey gubernatorial vote had already demonstrated that the president and his political team couldn’t produce a winning outcome in a state very friendly to Democrats (and where the president won by 15 points one year ago). And now this? Congressional Democrats must wonder if a White House that has burdened them with a too-heavy policy agenda over the last year has a strong enough political operation to help push that agenda through.

If the president’s communications apparatus can’t inform — and protect — their boss during tense moments when the country needs to see a focused commander-in-chief and a compassionate head of state, it has disastrous consequences for that president’s party and supporters.

All the president’s men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday. And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.

A man so broke that he said he didn’t have the money to visit his son 30 minutes away opened fire Friday at the engineering firm that fired him two years ago, killing one person and wounding five, authorities said.

As officers led a handcuffed Jason Rodriguez into a police station, a reporter asked the divorced 40-year-old why he had attacked his former colleagues.

The shooting on the eighth floor of an office tower paralyzed downtown Orlando for three hours. Police tracked Rodriguez to his mother’s home, spotted him through a window and ordered him to come out.

He surrendered peacefully and was in custody Friday evening. Police said he apologized as officers handcuffed him.

Clint,

You state: “I am an old man now. I promise you that I spent too many precious moments trying to push myself and my wishes onto others. I have hurt people who should have been my friends. Life is too short to waste–even via a blog. Please stop this.”

You know what? I think you are a young, wise man. Haven’t we all felt and done the same from the childhood playgrounds on?

I may not agree with you politically, but I will listen to you.

I will not disrespect you sir as I think you have not disrespected others here.

Comment by Liz

I see nothing wrong with the president acknowledging one of our nation’s heroes at the beginning of his speech. He was somber when he was addressing the shootings and what he said was appropriate. I think it is crass to try and turn this into something that it is not for no other purpose than to score political points.

Comment by Liz

And BTW, the Democrats scored 2 congressional seats. Governors mean nothing in Washington – they don’t vote on the issues that affect us all. Both outcomes were pretty much expected anyway! The Dems. are feeling victorious, so don’t feel too bad!

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. started another price war Thursday, trimming the online preorder prices of some upcoming DVDs following its price cut on books last month. And, once again, competitors Amazon.com and Target scrambled to match the prices.

It’s the latest salvo in an ongoing online push by Wal-Mart designed to make sure everyone knows it intends to be the low-price leader on the Web, as well as in stores.

The retailer, based in Bentonville, Ark., said late Thursday that it would lower the online prices of new DVDs such as “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” and “Star Trek XI” to $10.
