Alisyn in the Greenroom

Sunday Morning

Newt Gingrich is here this morning.  We’ll be asking him about the apparent divide in the Republican party between those who think the party should become more moderate on social issues and those who think the problem with the party is that it’s lost it’s conservative foundation.  What do you think?  What questions do you have for the former Speaker?

And get in your vote for what Dave, Rick, Clayton and I should be for Halloween.  (Did you realize our acronym is DRAC — how apropos for Halloween!)  We’re in the market for a group costume, not four separate themes.  Thoughts?

I kinda agree Chas … I mean we lose more to the seasonal flu each year than this if I am not mistaken. However, 1/3 of the population in my school was out last week. Not all with flu symptoms, but 33% none-the-less

chas, the “emergency” declaration harkens back to one of our themes – is it the national government’s role to wage “war” on sickness? What authority? Commerce Clause? It’s not the secretary of commerce who is in charge of the issue. What is the authority? We do not have a real “national government,” but a federal one, with things not expressly encompassed in Art 1, section 8, being a state, local, or individual issue. Every declaration of emergency or war [on crime, on flu, on drugs, on drunk driving, etc.] causes a shift to the executive and away from individuals and other branches of government. And the power is never fully returned after the “emergency” abates. We are still printing paper money, not authorized by the Constitution, based on the “emergency” of the Civil War.

Comment by Colleen

Good Morning Alisyn, Me,Chas.

More power grab. Yes. I also heard that by doing this he has the power to set up more places to treat the flu, cut the red tape for treatment. That is one thing, still think this is his way also of pushing the health care plan. The see it can work, like with the flu I just proved it. I can hear him saying those words already.

DRAC- -love it! You could freak the O family & all the folks out there who don’t watch Fox news out by dressing up as The First Family!!! Of the guys would have to really get in touch with there feminine side. ;)

Combine that, cap, with this story of the White House basically spitting on the Constitution in trying to shut out Fox News from a sponsored event.

It would seem the Constitution is of little concern to this Administration.

chas

Comment by chas

We’ve missed you Anita. Glad to have you return.

chas

Comment by Anita in VA

Chas, i believe this administration is rewriting the constitution to his own agenda.

Comment by capmotion

I agree that there cannot be content-based limitations on access to the white house. Peter Johnson is not correct that there is a first amendment right to collect information! But once the opportunity for access to the collection of information machinery is granted to one group, there cannot be a content-based discrimination practiced by government.

universal health care….and GOVERNMENT-PROVIDED universal health care are two different things. morally, i agree that everyone should have access to healthcare but i don’t believe it is the government’s responsibility to provide it. we have charitable organizations, such as Catholic Charities, that should be providing that to those in need, and the government should be providing those organizations with tax credits and/or subsizidies in order to provide that service.

Ali,

I think the only hope the GOP has is to find a new “moderate” spokesperson (get rid of Steele); become less partisan and work on real healthcare reform – no more window dressing and pandering to the insurance companies. It’s what their constituents really want, but they’ve made it quite obvious who they are really working for. Steele is too abrasive and partisan. I think that the “attack” politics have backfired and a lot of the moderates have defected (Colin Powell, etc.).

Only 20% of the American people now self-identify as Republican. I think at this point they are doing everything wrong. I defected about a year ago and most of my friends and colleagues who were Republican have moved to the left and now consider themselves Independents. No one stands out as a leader in the party, and very few Americans are really as ultra-conservative as the party has become.

Comment by AJ

Social issues are not the issue. The issue is small government vs. big government. They talk about Ronald Reagan all the time. Maybe they should go watch his first inaugural speech on a loop until they figure out where they went wrong. That speech could have been given today, and it would probably produce the same results for them it did then. I think the problem is that none of them are willing to give away their own power. The Bushes are decent people, but neither of them ever had any use for Reagan’s libertarian view of government, and they are largely to blame for the Republicans’ loss of direction.

Good morning everyone. That is an excellent explanation, Anita. It is good to see you again.

Comment by BruceWV

I to have pondered that question Anita, not to mention that driving a car is a personal choice, breathing is not.

Comment by Liz

Maybe the answer is to make everyone register with a political party. If you are a registered Democrat, the public option is available to you. If you are a registered Republican, you will be required to pay the high premiums needed to make the insurance company CEO’s comfortable while they deny you the care you need. Or you don’t have to buy insurance at all, in which case you could be denied care.

Let’s get more partisan and see if that works!

Comment by marine1967

And…. you can buy car insurance across state line

Good morning all you fellow americans except one, I attened a huge TEA party yesterday. The message I got was not more liberal social projects but more conservative values. Some want the GOP to become liberal. They will lose big time if they follow that path. The NY race is an example of this.

Question/Topic for NEWT :

Mr. Speaker, in the last few weeks several notables in the Republican Party, including Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, and yourself, have voiced the opinion that the Party needs to become more “inclusive”.

Some might point out that there is already an inclusive coalition of conservative and moderate Americans comprised of Republicans, Libertarians, Independents, and other parties in the form of the Tea Party Patriots.

Rather than blaming this group for interfering in NY-23, why are you not embracing their call for a return to the principles of Ronald Reagan?

As for addressing Newt as “Mr. Speaker,” that is entirely appropriate. And, uh…, actually we do address Carter, Clinton, Bush x 2 as “Mr. President,” and it is appropriate and standard to address former government people by the highest rank they had attained. Bolton is called “Ambassador,” retired senators are addressed as Senator, etc. That is a well-established protocol standard.

The one address we forget is how to address tha Dalai Lama; if you know him well, you may merely say “Hello, Dali!” :)

This same attitude is why the repulican party lost the last election. To call Sarah Palin an “outsider” well good for her, WE ARE A PARTY OF THE OUTSIDERS! AJ – you are absolutely right that Republicans for the last decade love to cite Reagan but have no idea what he stood for!

We need to get back to minimized central/Federal government and return many of the powers to the individual States.

All the Feds do now is pass entitlement laws that they do not fund. They pass off much of the funding to States who then go broke trying to comply with the laws the Feds make them have but don’t give them money to enact. That’s tyranny by the Federal Government.

States should be able to make their own laws (own healthcare, tort reform laws, welfare laws, pension plans in lieu of social security, run their own educational systems like it used to be, etc.).

The country would be a much better place.

I usually try to explain this by saying that if auto insurance were the same as health insurance, the only people that would need to be covered would be smokers and homicidal maniacs. In other words, only those people who were a danger to someone else’s health would require health insurance.

To carry that further, someone with H1N1 flu would need health insurance not to cover their own health but to cover the risk they are as a carrier who might give the flu to other people.

Everyone always talks about how far our children are behind every other country….FAIR & BALANCED from a teacher
Few ever mention that the USA is one of the very few countries in the world that provides a public education for ALL children. Most nations only educate the brightest, wealthiest or children of the most politically connected. Not only do we educate our American children we must educate the children of illegal immigrants. Here in Texas, we are made to focus on bringing these children up to the level of our American children. This must begin with the most basic….English. I spend many hours of my days teaching English to these children (while the American children “study” on their own) ….their mothers pick them up in new Lexus, they go home speak Spanish, come back the next day and I start over a square one all the while just giving the American children just enough to pass the TAKS test (our measurment in TX). Realize I am judged on the results of TAKS for all children, not just English speaking children!
The Supreme Court ruling of 1982 should be revisited to put our American on somewhat equal footing with the rest of the world! What’s a mere teacher to do?????

Spot on, Brenda.

On top of that, from everything I have read, Newt was being at best “disingenuous” (ahem) when he said Scozzafava had pledged not to raise taxes. She was specifically asked if she would support taxes in conjunction with the healthcare bill and her response was “what kind of taxes?” NOT absolutely not.

I am not a stickler on one issue of disagreement with a candidate; however, when that candidate supports card check, abortion, and other planks of the Democratic Party’s platform AND is more liberal than the Democratic candidate running in a race, then I don’t think she is an appropriate nominee for the Republicans.

The Gallup annual poll gaging party self-identification came out on June 15th before the 2nd round of tea parties, the town hall meetings, and the 9/12 March on Washington. Those who call themselves Conservative was up to 40% and there were 30% self-identifying as Moderates. Only 21% of the nation self-identifies as Liberal. It is insane that we are allowing 21% of the people in this country to have all the power over the rest of us and to lead us down their road to socialism.

It is imperative that conservative thinking candidates are elected to Congress, Governorships, and State legislatures in 2010 as these are the people that will be deciding the redistricting based on the 2010 census. If liberals are still running the show, Congressional districts will be set for liberals to win.

Comment by alexander kuehl

As a conservative republican in the GOP dominated NY 23 I am offended by the hachett job being done on Republican Hoffman by the likes of Gingrich and the local (republican ) daily paper.

As much as I like and supported Dede for the NYS Assembly I was stunned when the nine county GOP chairmen picked her without a primary (over Hoffman) as the candidate. Hoffman reflects the GOP national platform and she is a classic RINO. She is a social liberal who threatened to jump to the Democratic Party in last year’s election if not nominated by the GOP; and her husband is the regional trade union leader

Hoffman is being attacked for swearing off ALL earmarks.

The future of the GOP hangs in the balance

Ugh, Dr. Siegel. All the sugar in fruit juices that parents feed to their kids and in Kool-Aid, Hawaiian Punch, and other sweet drinks and you want to limit sugar in soda.

Why not educate parents that they can make kool-aid by the barrel at home and put in as much or little sugar as they want? Why not take parental responsibility like parents USED TO and tell your child no? Why not tell yourself no?

I’ve got news for these “nanny staters”. Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, etc., existed long before there was a supposed weight problem in this country. Triple mocha choco lattes did not. The problem is inactivity for everyone and not too much sugar. Get a grip!

Comment by Barbara Y

Chas, I tried to strike through Cap’s post and change “love” to “h ate” and that is the only one that hasn’t gone through for me today either. That’s why I suggested it might be a filter on the word. ;-)

What was the topic? Oh yeah, Newt Gingrich. Sometimes I agree and other times I don’t. But, what he thinks is really irrelevant because what happens in Washington has nothing to do with real life as is in more evidence than ever right now. Congress has the lowest rating ever in recent decades and still it plows ahead on it’s mission to NOT DO THE PEOPLE’S bidding. Elections have consequences and so the actions of an elitist congress. We shall see…the only good prediction of who is right and who is wrong are the post-election results.

Fans scrambled to see 3-D movies such as “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” in theaters this year and new 3-D televisions could soon have home viewers feeling as if they’re surrounded by a spaghetti hurricane on their couches.

Next year major electronics manufacturers Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. plan to introduce 3-D-capable high-definition televisions for the mass market. You’ll still need to wear special glasses, though.

Movie studios hope 3-D can help lift the sagging home video market the same way it has pushed up box office results.

The initial price of such sets is expected to be high — perhaps 20 percent more than normal sets of the same size. But costs should come down in the coming years.

The death of Jeffry Picower, accused of profiting more than $7 billion from the investment schemes of his longtime friend Bernard Madoff, will make it more difficult for suing investors to recoup their money, attorneys said.

Picower’s wife, Barbara, on Sunday discovered the 67-year-old’s body at the bottom of the pool at their oceanside mansion and pulled him from the water with help from a housekeeper, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Medical Center at about 1:30 p.m. Palm Beach police are investigating the death as a drowning, but have not ruled out anything on the cause of death.

Picower had been accused by jilted investors of being the biggest beneficiary of Madoff’s schemes. In a lawsuit to recover Madoff’s assets, trustee Irving Picard demanded Picower return more than $7 billion in bogus profits. In an e-mailed statement Sunday, Picard said only that “litigation will continue.”

I’m trying to post a story about an American doctor who went bankrupt because he got sick, but wordpress won’t let me. I’m not sure what the offending word is – but it was a very sad story. This guy had everything – and lost it all because of our wonderful healthcare system.

Comment by Liz

I saw it on a Canadian station – and you won’t see in here I’m sure. The Canadians say their healthcare system is not perfect, but at least they can sleep at night knowing that this will never happen to them. The US is the only country in the developed world where you are forced to go bankrupt if you get a disease. It’s really inexcusable.

Even a “cadillac” plan didn’t work for this poor doctor. He ended up living out of his car after his insurance dropped him. We have to stop letting corporations run this country via the GOP.

Health Care Reform
57% Say Health Care Plan Will Increase Costs, 53% Say It Will Reduce Quality of Care, 45% Favor Passage

If the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats passes, 57% of voters nationwide believe it will raise the cost of health care, and 53% believe the quality of care will get worse. That’s part of the reason that just 45% support the plan. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 51% are opposed to it.

33% Say Stimulus Helped Economy, 31% Say It Hurt
Monday, October 26, 2009

Questions linger about the effectiveness of the $787-billion economic stimulus plan proposed by President Obama and passed by Congress in February.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds voters almost evenly divided in their views of the plan: 33% say it has helped the economy, while 31% think it has hurt. Twenty-nine percent (29%) believe the plan has had no economic impact.

The stimulus package has received mixed reviews from the beginning and these numbers reflect a modest fallback from a month ago. Last month, 36% said the stimulus was good for the economy, and 28% said it was bad.

Liz, I’m not going to waste my time trying to convince you that Beck is worth listening to. I think the reason you can’t get anything out of Beck’s program is the fact that you can’t get what you’re LOOKING for. Probably, the only time you listen to him is when you are determined to find something wrong. THAT is your problem. When the “rubber hits the road” it is hard to find anything that disproves his contentions. That must really be annoying to you. He was right about Acorn. He was right about Obumma’s commie czar. He’s right about the ERA. Although I haven’t been able to listen to him lately, I am confident he’s right about what he is saying now. So, get over it, Dearie.

Comment by DogOnCrack

I’ve been watching and listening to Glenn for years and I’ve never known of him to traffic in “conspiracy theories.” He offers facts plain and simple. If his assertions about this administation weren’t true then the White House would speak up and set the record straight. Instead, they do the most idiotic thing imaginable and declare war on a news organization in a blatant attempt to violate the 1st amendment. If Glenn was as dumb and incorrect as certain jealous people like to claim and others repeatedly parrot on this blog then there would be absolutely no reason whatsoever for the TOTUS to be so utterly terrified of him.

Yes, Carolyn. I meant NEA. The ERA is the Equal Rights Amendment. Beck didn’t talk about that. At least not when I listened to him. Thanks for the correction. Welcome back, Roy. Now that WhitePowerforfox is gone, maybe we can get rid of our Obama groupie.

Beck talks with a lot of “innuendo” – and that’s why he’s so hard to understand. I was wondering if his books are equally as bad. Anyone else want to tackle that question? I wish someone would because I’m planning a class discussion about one of his shows and I’d like someone to recommend one and explain it the way you understand it.

Thanks in advance (but I won’t hold my breath). I’m serious! Sterling? You?

Beck is very easy to understand unless one has a thick skull…. Read his book Common Sense….
On the NY Times best seller list…… you may learn something. :)

Beck is talking about who wants the public option: it is all the under 30 somethings who think it will be “free insurance” and public employees and union members who will be exempt from having to take it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you told her the common symbol for liquid nitrogen was LN2 she would call you an idiot that is just too stupid to understand anything.

Anyone who says they believe in Ron Paul and still supports nationalized health care is too confused to get concerned with or bother with for that matter.

chas

Comment by olinl

If a state opts out of the public health care option, does that mean that all the freeloaders will have to move?

Anyone who says they believe in Ron Paul and what he stands for, and also says that they support nationalized health care is a big fat liar.

Comment by Sterling

Don’t drag me into your setup. You don’t want a truthful answer from anyone. You’ve already made up your mind about Beck, and you just want to taunt folks who fall for your trap. You’ve done it too many times here.

If you were sincere, you would have posted reasonable questions to Dog’s comment. It’s perfectly fine if you disagree with his viewpoint, but you can’t disagree with any effectiveness, so you attempt to marginalize him and Blogger. Dog provided you with an articulate, reasonable, and insightful response to your question, and you resorted to calling him an ineffective communicator, and anyone reading his response can obviously ascertain that he is absolutely a very effective communicator. What is your gig, anyway, of accusing folks of being ineffective communicators? You’ve accused me more than once of that, as well. You’re just wishing it was true. Better find a new line.

Don’t anyone fall for her trap. Let her do her own research.

Comment by Liz

Carolynro – you remind me of Ann Coulter! Is your voice like hers? Most guys think she’s really a man – and they understand why she doesn’t attract guys. They say “who would want to listen to that all day?” LOL

Comment by Liz

Sterling, it was a fair question and he did NOT answer it! You don’t answer questions either. I wish I could find someone here who could spell out exactly what Beck is about and what his goal is. I’ve never heard him say anything positive about anything – like Ann Coulter. Is he a mouthpiece for the GOP, or does he lean Libertarian, like you? You are not a true Libertarian or you wouldn’t be defending the wars or Cheney!

Comment by Liz

I told you Sterling that if Ron Paul could run as an independent and clean up Washington – which would include bringing “supercapitalism” under control (which I know you don’t understand), then I would vote for him. He would need to make some drastic changes, and I don’t think it’s possible without a “real” grassroots movement.

Comment by Liz

Chuckie, you don’t have to explain my motives – you can’t even explain your own! LMAO!

Comment by Liz

You all know I want your “point of view” about Beck because I’m studying your points of view! I’ve told you that so many times, but I know you are older people and your short term memories are not that good. TRY to remember what my agenda is! Help me out!

Comment by Liz

Carolynro – Obama just wants to make sure the Republicans get defeated “soundly” in the next election. The GOP won’t be able to outspend him, will they? I hope not! The Democratic candidates will get plenty of support for sure!

Of course I would like to see Ron Paul raise that kind of money, but it’s just not possible!

Comment by Liz

Carolynro – I would take rationing over getting cut off completely by the insurance companies, wouldn’t you?

Comment by Liz

Anyway, the public option will be funded properly and there won’t be any problems – just like we take care of the military!

Comment by chas

Your agenda is to boost your own already inflated ego.

Trust me, I’ve been around this block many more times than you have kid. You really aren’t as impressive as you think you are, except in your own mind. More destructive than impressive.

If I’m wrong, then explain how you can claim to support Ron Paul and nationalized health care, which are diametrically opposed to each other, and make a logical argument for the opposing philosophies.

chas

Comment by Liz

Because under Libertarianism, it would be done right. Insurance companies would not be calling the s h o t s because anti-trust laws would be enforced. That would make them competitive. Do you understand supercapitalism in a world economy? If not, read up on it and then we can talk.

Comment by Liz

My reading list does not include partisan politics, like Glenn Beck or any mouthpieces for the GOP. The GOP doesn’t know how to run anything, so they let the corporations run things and bend laws to let them. Corporations are not people, so I don’t think they should be making decisions, do you?

Carolynro – I would take rationing over getting cut off completely by the insurance companies, wouldn’t you?

Your comment makes no sense. Big surprise there. Rationing by the government or being cut off by your insurance company both equal no care or inadequate care. What, it’s okay with you if the government is the one who prolongs the illness or causes the death?

Comment by Sterling

You need to do your due diligence, and the first thing on your list needs to be educating yourself on the tenets of Libertarianism. Libertarians believe in very small, limited government. They would never endorse a nationalized health care plan. There would be no doing it right, because they would never ever in a million years even consider such an undertaking.

Try to answer with a logical reply, if you can.

Good night.

Comment by DogOnCrack

Ron Paul can’t raise enough money so fascism is the answer, huh?
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Glenn Beck is a staunch libertarian who despises both the GOP and corporate power and greed! If you actually took the time to really learn anything about him instead of just parroting the foul lies you’re fed by PMSDNC and the left-wing extremist blogs then you’d know that!

Then again, you’re a foul liar yourself so the truth doesn’t matter to you!

NASA’s newest rocket is on the verge of blasting off on a test flight.

The Ares I-X rocket is set to lift off Tuesday morning. But forecasters say there’s a 60 percent chance that rain and clouds could delay the experimental flight.

It’s the first step in NASA’s effort to return astronauts to the moon.

The flight will last two minutes and cost $445 million. Parachutes will drop the first-stage booster into the Atlantic for recovery. The upper portion of the rocket — all fake parts — will fall uncontrolled into the ocean.

No matter what happens, NASA managers say they expect to learn a lot from the flight, even if it’s for another type of rocket. The White House is re-evaluating the entire human spaceflight program.

Comment by Liz

Sterling, that’s a ridiculous comment. Our system will be better than Canada’s and they don’t ration care and never have (regardless of what you might hear to the contrary). We are a much richer nation than they are, so just shut up. You will live to be old(er) dear!

As for small gov’t., yes I believe that would work theoretically if someone like Ron Paul had to power to change everything, but he doesn’t – so I’m going with the lesser of two evils and voting for our developed nation to have national healthcare like the rest of the world – and if you do some DD you will find more countries are happy with it than NOT.

Comment by Liz

Thank you DOG! Here’s a statement I can use…..

Glenn Beck is a staunch libertarian who despises both the GOP and corporate power and greed!

Except his own maybe? He’s a multi-multi-millionaire and he doesn’t seem to want to pay taxes. Sorry, but I’ve NEVER heard him say he despises the GOP, so could you show me an excerpt from one of his books, maybe, where he says that? Thanks.

Comment by Liz

Hi Kevin – yes, you got it right!

Comment by Liz

Sterling, if you don’t understand “capitalism” then you can’t possibly understand what Libertarians are all about! I can’t explain it all to you, so why don’t you do some reading by Ron Paul – he could tell you how capitalism should work and how real competition would keep healthcare costs under control. There would be no special treatment for “corporations”, who are NOT people.

Comment by Sterling

I was pointing out that your comment didn’t make sense, regarding rationing vs. insurance cutting off benefits. What about my comment was ridiculous, other than it doesn’t agree with yours? Don’t make yourself look any less informed by trying to teach me about libertarianism. And I am a card-carrying capitalist. That’s why you’ve expressed your dislike for me from the beginning. Or did you forget all the times you’ve tried to insult me by calling me a capitalist?

You can not be more contradictory in supporting nationalized health care and saying you also agree with everything about Ron Paul. Or in saying that you’re going with the lesser of two evils because he doesn’t have the money to be in power. The two are polar opposites.

Comment by Liz

Please watch this video – Ron Paul has lots of support on college campuses and now his son wants to run – under the GOP because that’s the only way he can. Listen to him…..

Comment by Liz

Sterling, I am for national healthcare right now because it works much better than what we have – and it’s working in ALL other developed countries. Right now, it’s our only choice – unless we want to be bulldozed by corporate America. The way our laws are now, that’s what will happen.

Comment by Sterling

I disagree, Liz. It’s not working in every other country. There are other countries that are trying to get rid of it. It’s a very bad choice, and it’s certainly not our only choice. I don’t argue that health care doesn’t need reform; it does. But a government take-over is not the answer.

Comment by John

Does any think he can make up his mind on healthcare decision faster than a military decision? Wow we might wait 1 year for him to decide whether we need medical heip. Byut wharever you do do not rush your decision. LOL

A capitalist does not approve of the government take over of business, health care, wall street and the media, skyrocketing debt, tax hikes, and tinkering with what people are paid.

What is wrong with our health system will not be fixed by all of the garbage that is in the plans as written today. There is no tort reform or means testing.

Other countries report daily that they are confused that American is going down the same path that they are trying to rid themselves of. It is often said here that the health plans work in other countries…perhaps that is true but then they didn’t start out with what we have here and which over 70% of Americans like and are accustomed to. To say Americans will be happy with less than what they are used to is ridiculous. Socialist countries like what they have because they don’t know anything different but come here for procedures and care if they have the money to do so.

Comment by Liz

John, everything we are doing overseas now is the right thing to do. If you listen to Liz Cheney or her dad, you will be getting a false impression of what’s going on over there. They know nothing, although they think they do. Cheney & Bush ignored requests for more troops in Afghanistan for months and they should have been pulling troops out and using drones. Cheney is trying to cover his butt -and talking about it publicly is unprecedented. Cheney should just GO AWAY, like Bush did, and like every other admin. that is OVER with. Nobody knows more than the White House about our military operations and they shouldn’t comment on it, especially FOX shows hosted by “dumb” political commentators.

Comment by carolynro

The sophomoric approach to design programs just to screw corporations will end in disaster. It takes money to feed the beast that is being constructed by the Obama administration. If jobs that create tax dollars are sacrificed for some pie-in-the-sky plan to punish the money makers as a means of social justice works America will be crippled for generations. So, you have a choice- subscribe to some moralistic view of retaliation towards corporations or tell government to get out of the way and let the money flow. It is either one or the other and you cannot believe in both as they are mutually exclusive theories.

Comment by Liz

I don’t know where you get your info. Carolynro, but it’s completely WRONG. Canadians love their healthcare system, flaws and all. They wouldn’t trade it for what we have for the world.

Comment by Liz

Like I said before, read “Super Capitalism”. It’s not just about us anymore – it’s about the WORLD.

Comment by Liz

With a 2-party system it’s impossible for us to be Libertarian, although it probably would work out well. Corporations cannot be allowed to run roughshod over citizens – and that’s what we have now! No morals, no ethics – just GREED! And Congress passed laws to accommodate them, not us.

Comment by carolynro

People who have never had the American system cannot adequately compare what they have to our system. Period.

Comment by carolynro

If you have always driven a 12 year- old used 4 door Ford sedan and it has gotten you where you are going you cannot understand what it is like to drive a Beemer. Canadians have always driven the used Ford sedan type of health care- Americans have the Beemer level of care and will be really pissed to be downgraded to the rickety old Ford sedan. You should understand the analogy. I doubt you have ever had to drive a 12-year old car.

Comment by carolynro

You are just a walking talking point…You mistake greed for a drive to make money. Was your dad greedy for working for GM? Are you greedy trying to earn some sort of degree so that you can have a nice life-style. Step away from the liberal think tank for 5 minutes and analyze what you are living and stop preaching some ethereal liberal gobbity gook about corporate greed that provided you with your life the way it turned out. Is your boyfriend greedy for getting up each day and going to work to provide you with health insurance? You cannot put everything in neat little boxes to fit your current political confusion. Life is not black and white.

Comment by carolynro

Your argument that the health plan will be an improvement is belied by the fact that all the plans in congress right now exclude over 20 million -and maybe up to 27 million Americans. How is that an improvement? There is no tort reform. There are unconstitutional aspects. There are huge tax increases and the potential to destroy more businesses and jobs. I guess you are free to ascribe to more pain and misery for the American people but be careful what you wish for. You live in a bubble right now but eventually you will need to look for a job. Have you checked what is available for 30-year old recent college graduates lately? You might want to do a reality check before you totally turn your life over to Obama like those poor saps down in Detroit who qued up for money for their heat bills two weeks ago who said they voted for Obama because they thought he said he would be passing out money. I saw that on tv the other day and got chills. Is that the country you are hoping for?

“More people are seeking care in hospital emergency rooms, and the cost of caring for ER patients has soared 17 percent over two years, despite efforts to direct patients with nonurgent problems to primary care doctors instead, according to new state data.”

“Visits to Massachusetts emergency rooms grew 7 percent between 2005 and 2007, to 2,469,295 visits. The estimated cost of treating those patients – including salaries for caregivers, tests such as X-rays and CT scans, and medicines – jumped from $826 million to $973 million, according data provided to the Globe.”

“Several physicians and policy makers said the state information, along with other new data from Harvard researchers, suggests that emergency room crowding and rising costs will not be solved by providing people with health insurance alone, despite optimistic talk by politicians who advocated for the law.”

“Andrew Dreyfus, a senior vice president at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the state’s largest insurer, agreed more information is needed but said the state’s soaring emergency room costs – and healthcare costs generally – are not going to be solved by mandatory health insurance.”

Dem Senator Warns of ‘Big, Big Tax’ on Middle Class in Baucus Bill

September 16, 2009 7:45 AM

The Huge Middle Class Tax Increase Coming Our Way With ObamaCare

Posted by: Curt @ 2:34 pm in Barack Obama, Economy, Health Care, Obamanomics, POWER GRAB!, Socialism, Socialized Health Care, Universal Health Care, taxes | 228 views

The former CBO director, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, warns today on the effect ObamaCare will have on our economy and health care. These facts should be painfully obvious to those with even one iota of common sense. This bill will lead to a huge middle class tax increase:
As it now stands, the plan proposed by Democrats and the Obama administration would not only fail to reduce the cost burden on middle-class families, it would make that burden significantly worse.

Accounting for What Families Pay in Taxes and What They Receive in Government Spending

by Scott A. Hodge

“… Low-income families will be disproportionately affected by regressive cap-and-trade policies and higher tobacco taxes. Here on the tax side of the equation, these new, higher taxes hit low-income families hard. One might expect that Obama’s “Making Work Pay” tax credit would balance these new burdens out, but much of that refundable credit’s benefit counts as spending rather than as tax relief…”

“Spanish patients cannot choose their physicians, either primary care or specialists. Rather, they are assigned a primary care doctor from a list of physicians in their local community. If more specialized care is needed, the primary care physician refers patients to a network of specialists. Unlike U.S. managed care, it is not possible to go “out of network” unless the patient has private health insurance. This has sparked an interesting phenomenon whereby sick Spaniards move in order to change physicians or find networks with shorter waiting lists.”

“Some health services that U.S. citizens take for granted are almost totally unavailable. For example, rehabilitation, convalescence, and care for those with terminal illness are usually left to the patient’s relatives. There are very few public nursing and retirement homes, and few hospices and convalescence homes.”

“The regional variation is important because Spaniards face bureaucratic barriers in trying to go to another region for treatment.”

“The Norwegian health care system has experienced serious problems with long and growing waiting lists. Approximately 280,000 Norwegians are estimated to be waiting for care on any given day (out of a population of just 4.6 million). The average wait for hip replacement surgery is more than four months; for a prostectomy, close to three months; and for a hysterectomy, more than two months. Approximately 23 percent of all patients referred for hospital admission have to wait longer than three months for admission.”

“Moreover, such delays may represent only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to rationing care in Norway. In some cases, care may be denied altogether if it is judged not to be cost-effective. As Knut Erik Tranoy, Professor Emeritus at the Centre for Medical Ethics of the University of Oslo and an original member of the government’s Health Care Priorities Commission, explains: It is important to see (a) that, in a public health service of the Nordic type, any given amount of resources always has alternative uses. And (b) it is neither medically nor morally defensible to put scarce resources to uses which will foreseeably yield less favorable outcomes than other uses—save fewer lives, cure fewer patients.”

“Almost no one disputes that Britain’s National Health Service faces severe problems, and few serious national health care advocates look to it as a model. Yet it appears in Moore’s movie SiCKO as an example of how a national health care system should work, so it is worth examining.”

“As many as 750,000 Britons are currently awaiting admission to NHS hospitals. These waits are not insubstantial and can impose significant risks on patients. For example, by some estimates, cancer patients can wait as long as eight months for treatment. Delays in receiving treatment are often so long that nearly 20 percent of colon cancer patients considered treatable when first diagnosed are incurable by the time treatment is finally offered.”

“In some cases, to prevent hospitals from using their resources too quickly, mandatory minimum waiting times have been imposed. The fear is that patients will flock to the most efficient hospitals or those with smaller backlogs. Thus a top-flight hospital like Suffolk East PCT was ordered to impose a minimum waiting time of at least 122 days before patients could be treated or the hospital would lose a portion of its funding.”

http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-613.pdf

Comment by DogOnCrack

“The problem affects not only hospitals. There are also lengthy waits to see physicians, particularly specialists. In 2004, as a cost-cutting measure, the government negotiated low salaries for general practitioners in exchange for allowing them to cut back the hours they practice. Few are now available nights or weekends. Problems with specialists are even more acute. For example, roughly 40 percent of cancer patients never get to see an oncology specialist.”

“The government’s official target for diagnostic testing is a wait of no more than 18 weeks by 2008. In reality, it doesn’t come close.242 The latest estimates suggest that for most specialties, only 30 to 50 percent of patients are treated within 18 weeks. For trauma and orthopedics patients, the figure is only 20 percent. Overall, more than half of British patients wait more than 18 weeks for care.”

“Explicit rationing also exists for some types of care, notably kidney dialysis, open heart surgery, and some other expensive procedures and technologies. Patients judged too ill or aged for the procedures to be cost effective may be denied treatment altogether.”

“The British public is well aware of the need for reform. Nearly two-thirds of Britons (63 percent) say that the need for reform is “urgent,” while another 24 percent believe it is “desirable.” Fully 60 percent of Britons believe that making it easier for patients to spend their own money on health care would improve quality.”

“Waiting lists are a major problem under the Canadian system. No accurate government data exists, but provincial reports do show at least moderate waiting lists. The best information may come from a survey of Canadian physicians by the Fraser Institute, which suggests that as many as 800,000 Canadians are waiting for treatment at any given time. According to this survey, treatment time from initial referral by a GP through consultation with a specialist, to final treatment, across all specialties and all procedures (emergency, nonurgent, and elective), averaged 17.7 weeks in 2005. And that doesn’t include waiting to see the GP in the first place.”

Comment by DogOnCrack

“A look at specialties with especially long waits shows that the longest waits are for procedures such as hip or knee replacement and cataract surgery, which could arguably be considered elective. However, fields that could have significant impact on a patient’s health, such as neurosurgery, also have significant waiting times. In such cases, the delays could be life threatening. A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that at least 50 patients in Ontario alone have died while on the waiting list for cardiac catheterization. Data from the Joint Canada–United States Survey of Health (a project of Statistics Canada and the National Center for Health Statistics) revealed that “thirty-three percent of Canadians who say they have an unmet medical need reported being in pain that limits their daily activities.”

Sure, the wait times might be a little longer, but the cost savings make it worth it….

WASHINGTON — It’s the bogeyman of the heated debate about overhauling U.S. health care. Critics charge that revamping the American system will turn the country into Canada, with a nationalized health care system and people dying as they wait for needed services they no longer can get.

New Ipsos-McClatchy online polls find that patients in Canada are indeed much more frustrated by waiting times to see medical specialists than patients in the United States are, and slightly less happy with the waiting times to see their family doctors.

However, they’re much more likely to say that they have access to all the health care services they need at costs they can afford, by a margin of 65 to 49 percent.

Comment by Liz

Anyway, our system will not be like theirs – and you can always buy the “cadillac” plan. If you do that, your wait times will be greatly reduced I’m sure! You totally or purposefully missed the point about the house built by the city of Troy…it needed sunshine to power it and they built it in a place where there is not enough sun to sustain the mechanics of heating the home during the winter. It is unclear why the solar system failed but regardless to build it in a cold climate was folly. It was funded by Reinvestment Act money through Lawrence Tech so it was a government program partnered with DTE. So, it was tax payer funded, for the most part. It was opened for a tour for the first time since it was completed on October 10, 2009 from 10 am to 4 pm. The house is 800 square feet for a price tag of $900,000. that means it costs over $1100.00 a square foot and unless you are a millionaire, you cannot afford it. The home is owned by the City of Troy and looks like a cross between a state park bath house and a school portable class room.It is not beautiful and I do not believe you toured it.

Our health system will look exactly like those of socialist countries if Obama shoves it down our throats. There will be more fraud than there is now with an increased role of government as there will not be enough monitors to keep track and no incentive by workers to strictly make sure rules are being followed because the government workers get paid no matter how badly they do their jobs. There is no incentive to protect the bottom line. Without a profit motive people just don’t give rip and they do what they need to do to get by. And they will all be union employees on top of it as icing on the “lack of motivation” cake.

They see a group of people all at once instead of seeing patients individually because they have to cram in as many people each day as they can in order to make enough money to stay open. Sounds like China to me.

Yes, and the city owns it. A solar company got Reinvestment Act funds to come here from California and set up shop. Now, in California $900,000 will by a house the size of a state park bath house but in Michigan $900,000 buys a considerable amount more in square footage. A waste of tax dollars. Had private funding paid for it, there would be a difference in my opinion but when a state like ours is suffering so, I cannot connect the dots between using tax dollars for “experiments” instead of spending funds that more directly and expediently would help our citizens. We cannot wait for the experiment to pan out. One family leaves Michigan every minute looking for work or taking work elsewhere. Soon, there will be no “elsewhere” to look for work if government keeps frittering away our tax dollars on pipe dreams.

Comment by carolynro

That should read: one family leaves Michigan every 12 minutes…

For example, Australia prohibits private insurance policies from covering the ambulatory care co-payments required in the public programme. You really need to think through your statements before you post them. Calling others here selfish because they disagree with out-of-control government spending is beyond naive. If you are telling the truth about your age, then you’re way old enough to know better. The desire and ability to give to charitable organizations in order to help those less fortunate than you is liberty. The government forcing you to pay taxes in order to fund charities that you may or may not agree with is called tyranny.

You never did look up the definition of libertarian, did you?

And I knew that you couldn’t answer the Ron Paul question with any signs of intellect. He is a Constitutionalists, he believes in the Constitution, if it isn’t in the enumerated powers of Art 1, Sec 8, the Federal Government shouldn’t be doing it.

There is NO provision in the Constitution allowing the Federal Government to force you into Social Security, into health care programs run by the Government, which does not have the power to form or run a health care program.

Between 01/2003 and 12/2007, Medicare trustees reported that the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare grew by a $10.4 trillion. This is a matter of public record.

The trustees also say it will be broke by 2018. The current recession has sped up the deficit because there are many unemployed and therefore, fewer contributions, but the fund was already in decline well before the recession started.

Solar House opening this Fall in Troy as green demonstration project
By Jay Greene
Advertisement

A cutting-edge, 800-square-foot solar-powered house built by Lawrence Technological University students may finally open this fall in Troy, nearly two years after it was donated to the city by the Troy Chamber of Commerce

Also from Crain’s Detroit Business:

In 2007, Lawrence Tech originally built the solar house for a Solar Decathlon on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. (tax dollars paid for it).

From Political Wrinkles:

Lawrence Technological University, with help from DTE, mostly paid for the building. Its students built the 800-square-foot home, which was supposed to be livable year-round, free from the grid and churn out enough solar power to support a home-based business and electric vehicle.

Wrong again, Liz.

Troy Chamber of Commerce consists of businesses – and one of the business owners donated the property! Doh! It was a great project for those students.

Comment by Liz

If DTE helped pay for it, then how are taxpayers involved? The University got a federal grant – not unlike many grants they give out every year. Lots of grants are paid for by private corporations, and I think that was the case with this one, but I’m not sure. Even corporations have to give away some of their huge profits – or pay Uncle Sam. Most would rather give grants for educational purposes!

The Community Reinvestment Act (or CRA, Pub.L. 95-128, title VIII, 91 Stat. 1147, 12 U.S.C. § 2901 et seq.) is a United States federal law designed to encourage commercial banks and savings associations to meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of their communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

I was not talking about the Community Reinvestment Act , The original home was built by Lawrence University for a competition. It was built on the Washington Mall. It was then brought to Troy with the help of many organizations. The chamber of commerce somehow got possession and then donated it to Troy. However the original funding came from the department of energy:

“Team ALOeTERRA will receive $100,000 over two years from the U.S. Department of Energy to
support the advancement of solar technologies research central to the principles of the 2007 Solar
Decathlon. However, the actual cost for the team to design, build, and transport their home

42 Democrats in the House and Senate have followed Sanders’ lead by cutting public service announcements. Only four Republicans have followed suit — Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Jim Risch of Idaho and Mike Johanns of Nebraska and Rep. Jo Emerson of Missouri. Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) has also promoted the vaccine.

Limbaugh, on a recent radio show, lambasted the Obama administration and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelieus for admonishing the country to get vaccinated. Limbaugh said he has never been urged by a doctor to get vaccinated, and punctuated his commentary by saying, “Screw you, Ms. Sebelius, I’m not going to take it, precisely because you’re now telling me I must… Have you heard of the concept of liberty and freedom?”

Sebelius has stressed that the vaccinations are voluntary, and that the Obama administration is not attempting any kind of mandatory requirement.

But Senate Republicans are distancing themselves from Limbaugh’s remarks, saying they understand the concern over the vaccine and individual choice — although they plan to take it.

Many travelers still rely on comprehensive printed guidebooks for tourism information. But travelers are also increasingly using mobile technology to plan a trip or find their way around.

Now a technology called QR codes, for Quick Response, offers a way to forge a functional relationship between your guidebook and your smart phone. The codes are already big in Japan, but relatively unknown in the U.S.

QR codes are essentially barcodes that can be scanned by smart phone cameras and other devices. You aim your camera at a QR code on a page in a travel book, for example, and it links to information online, such as a map or directions based on the user’s location. The user can also store information in the phone about the place that’s described on the page.

QR codes can also appear in media other than books. You can scan them off a computer screen. They’ve been put on T-shirts and even billboards.

Barack Obama sees approval rating plummet

Barack Obama’s decline in popularity since the summer is the worst of any US president at the same stage in a first term in over 50 years.

The most recent public opinion poll carried out by the research company Gallup found Mr Obama’s approval rating stood at 53 per cent for the third quarter of 2009.

The figure represents a sharp drop for the 62 per cent he recorded from April.

Comment by Sterling

I’m also sick of hearing about this ridiculous health care bill being deficit neutral. I understand we have to start funding it next year, even though it will be 2013 before it kicks in. Why don’t they start coughing up the numbers on what it’s going to cost each tax payer? Is it going to be Sterling neutral? Or, like every other program, is Sterling and other citizens like her going to do all the funding and reap none of the so-called benefit?

Comment by carolynro

By ARTHUR C. BROOKS

Regardless of how President Barack Obama’s health-care agenda plays out in Congress, it has not been a success in public opinion. Opposition to ObamaCare has risen all year.

According to the Gallup polling organization, the percentage of Americans who believe the cost of health care for their families will “get worse” under the proposed reforms rose to 49% from 42% in just the past month. The percentage saying it would “get better” stayed at 22%.

Comment by carolynro

Arthur Brooks continued:
Americans recoil at policies that strip choices from citizens and pass them to bureaucrats. ObamaCare systematically does so. The current proposals in Congress would effectively limit choice across the entire spectrum of health care: What kind of health insurance citizens can buy, what kind of doctors they can see, what kind of procedures their doctors will perform, what kind of drugs they can take, and what treatment options they may have.

Comment by carolynro

Arthur Brooks continued:

Meanwhile, ObamaCare would limit the ability of people to choose affordable insurance coverage through less-comprehensive, consumer-driven insurance plans. And it wouldn’t allow Americans to shop for better health-care plans from out-of-state carriers.

Liz…why don’t we just agree that we source our information from completely different people and that we are never going to agree. The only advantage some of have is the fact that most of us here have years of experience and observation that politicians are rarely, if ever, clever or honest enough to understand the cost of their “Son Of Flubber” experiments with the American tax dollar. If you listen to pro-Obama media…they are not telling the whole story and if you listen to conservative media you hear critical analysis. It is your option to listen to and believe in who you think makes you feel better. Many of us chose to listen to the voices that are more accurately predictive of what happens to the tax dollar in our country. Look what the dems did to Olympia Snowe. But, this constant insistance that government spending is only a good thing when crafted by liberals is crippling your argument. No problems are solved. Obama is crippled by his seat high on Mount Olympus and is not leading. He is letting the ruffians in congress run amok.

Comment by carolynro

See you trust an NBC poll. NBC is totally in the tank for Obama because the boss is trying to get government money for GE which is in trouble.

Comment by carolynro

Here is another poll

40% of Americans identify themselves as conservatives
36% say they are moderate
20% say they are liberal

Here is a primer on how the left polls more democrats when doing their polls:
http://mediamatters.org/research/200910210035

You put polls up that consistently weight in favor of democrats…they ask more liberals and democrats for their opinions. That is fine but again, you have little credence for fact. You instead demonstrate feelings which cannot be confused with hard facts.

Comment by carolynro

Only 43% of Obama voters would vote for him again. That is why Obama is paralyzed and running all over raising money. He is more concerned about the 2009 elections in Virginia and New Jersey and about the 2010 mid-terms. He knows his party is in trouble and has attended 27 or 28 fund raisers since elected compared to Clinton who went to 5 and GW Bush who went to 6 in the same time period. He is not acting like a leader. He is running for president, still.

Can you name anything they have done in this administration? I can’t. They need to be thrown out. They still want the bill killed, which is NOT an option! All they are doing is criticizing everything that’s being done and they have NOTHING to offer. How do they think that is going to get them re-elected? DOH!

I used to be a democrat until I realized that they only care about getting re-elected and will dupe anyone who gives them a chance to do so. But, again…experience trumps emotion.
The republicans are in the minority and are shoved aside accordingly. But, still Harry Reid is looking for tricky ways to pass the health bill that he should be able to pass, straight up. But, he can’t convince all of his party to go along. Pelosi is looking for a new name for “public option” when she could get the bills passed alone because so many are against what they are serving. Just examine the reality of how things are going down. Never mind how I feel. Just observe and see how much trouble this administration is in. RULE # 1 OF POLITICS- WHEN YOUR ENEMY IS HANGING ITSELF- LET THEM. The republicans are playing it smart. You libs all got what you thought you wanted in Obama. But something stinks and well over a majority of America smell it and do not like how it is going. So, don’t blame the republicans. Blame the democrats for screwing up this wonderful opportunity to take the country by storm. You don’t get it and it has nothing to do with anyone on this blog. It is all on Obama and his lefty spoilers.

I am NOT liberal, but I know we’ve all been Bush-whacked! I’ve been over it and over it here and no one gets it! So what if Obama got contributions from the financial institutions – they ALL do. The only difference is the GOP Senators and the Bluedogs have made promises they have to keep. Also, they’ve collected millions over the years – that’s what happens when there’s no term limits. They end up “buying” the Senator!

Get a clue people – if they win YOU LOSE!!!

Cracks me up that you guys are scared by the “numbers” the GOP is throwing at you! If we did it THEIR WAY, it would cost 4X as much!

Carolynro – the GOP is way too conservative for the country now. I don’t know how that happened, but if we had some moderates it would make a world of difference. The group in there now refuses to cooperate or do anything at all. It’s NEVER been that way before. We need a mixture of right and left, and that’s the only way it can work. I never like to see too much of one party – but they have to work together. There’s never been a stalemate like this one. It’s just sad really…the right is too extreme.

You either stand for something or you’ll fall for anything. As has been proven here for many months now. The worst thing you can be called is a moderate, especially when that moniker is used to suggest that a left-wing Kool-Aid drinker is mainstream.

I’m an American and as such, I stand for freedom and liberty. What that means is freedom and liberty for all. Each and every one of us. More specifically, I don’t give a rat’s patooty what you do as long as it doesn’t interfere with my liberty and freedom. When it does, as with the current administration’s attempt to hijack my perfectly fine health care, that’s when I get riled up. And I think that it’s safe to say that that’s where all the controversy lies with this administration. Love them or not, fix what’s wrong and leave everyone else alone.

SOMERVILLE, N.J. – An Illinois man has admitted banking more than $470,000 in paychecks from a New Jersey company he never worked for.

Thirty-five-year-old Anthony Armatys (AHR’-muh-tees) of Palatine, Ill., pleaded guilty Monday in New Jersey Superior Court to one count of theft as part of a plea bargain.

Prosecutors say Armatys accepted a job with Basking Ridge, N.J.-based telecommunications company Avaya Inc. in September 2002, then changed his mind. But the company’s computer system never removed his name from the payroll.

Paychecks were deposited into his bank account until February 2007, when Avaya auditors discovered the mistake.

Prosecutors are recommending a six-year prison term and restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 8.

Sterling, our form of government is set up for “cooperation” between the two parties. When one party won’t cooperate, it doesn’t work! It has worked that way since Day 1 – it’s about checks and balances. If one party gets too much control, then people who don’t agree with them feel their rights are being trampled…just like you do now! It’s the way I felt for the last few years of Bush’s presidency – I didn’t agree with anything he was doing, but I had to live with it. That’s just the way it is. Everyone will NOT agree on everything – EVER! We don’t want a dictatorship, so we need the two-party system – just like Canada and Europe and all developed countries.

A South Korean stem cell scientist once hailed as a hero for bringing hope to people with incurable diseases and creating the world’s first cloned dog was convicted Monday on criminal charges related to faked research, but avoided jail.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Hwang Woo-suk to two years in prison for embezzling research funds and illegally buying human eggs. However, it suspended the penalty, allowing him to stay free if he breaks no laws for three years.

Prosecutors had asked for four years in prison, but Judge Bae Ki-yeol said the 56-year-old scientist had shown remorse and had notable achievements in dog cloning.

Her argument sounds good to people who don’t get it. Bush buried us in debt because that’s what the “right” does – spend like there’s no tomorrow and then deny it. Now we have to spend to get us OUT of his mess!!!

DOH! Bush started 2 wars with no way to pay for them, and he cut taxes when he should have raised them. The money he spent would have paid for the healthcare bill for everyone. The sad part is that his wars did more harm than good…and Libertarians know that.

MORE AMERICANS WANT THE PUBLIC OPTION….

Inclusion of a public option has become one of the most contentious issues in the debate on healthcare reform — President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority, which seeks to cut costs, improve care and regulate insurers.

Democrats said Reid was still short of the 60 votes needed to overcome procedural hurdles and pass a bill with a public option. Republicans are against the measure, which they say amounts to a government takeover of healthcare which would hurt the private insurance industry.

But several polls in recent weeks show support for the option running at between 50 and 61 percent among Americans. Among backers is yoga instructor Suzanne Brownlow, from Atlanta.

“It’s almost impossible to get insurance. A public option would present me with an opportunity,” said Brownlow, 48, who has repeatedly been denied coverage since having a seizure eight years ago, and has been without coverage for year.

In Los Angeles, meanwhile, attorney Gary Minevich, 33, who is among some 46 million people in the United States without coverage, said he supported “nationalized” health care.

“I haven’t had health care in like seven years and I think that if he had passed this a long time ago I’d have been able to see a doctor,” he said.

Comment by Sterling

How were they Bush’s fault? Geeze.

Comment by Liz

The worst part about the status quo is that people get tied to their jobs. They can’t switch jobs and health insurance policies anymore – because of the “pre-existing condition” clause in most insurance policies. If they develop a condition while working for an employer who covers them and then want to switch jobs, they can’t do it and be covered for that “condition” anymore! It’s sick!

Comment by Liz

Of course if you have a “gubbermint” job, like good old chas, why should you care about anyone else?

Comment by Liz

They can’t carry their insurance to the next employer because each individual employer makes their own “deals” with the insurance companies. How will we get the insurance companies to go along with that??? They won’t. That’s why we need to create competition! Get it? Some insurance companies will never get rid of their “pre-existing condition” clauses, so there needs to be another “option”!

If the “health care reform” is supposed to make the system better for all Americans..why is all the work being done on the plan being done in secret?

If “health care reform” plans are deficit neutral …why are so many congress people balking at the cost? And why do tax increases to pay for it go into effect immediately?

I should think all American regardless of political party would want answers to these easy questions.

The Republicans just don’t get it. If they want to make the tea parties work, they should follow OUR lead. Take last night’s O’Reilly for example. Those young girls were garnering a lot of attention to the cause of global warming. They were pulling their clothes off, piece by piece. I must tell you, I could feel the heat myself. In only a few seconds, I was sweating like Barney Frank at a Playgirl model’s convention. Anyway, if the TEA PARTIERS really want to draw attention to their “cause” (like any of us care about high taxes. I mean, what do I care? I get a welfare check each month.), they need to GET NAKED. Can you imagine 20,000 naked people marching into Washington? But, the Tea Paritiers will never do anything THAT clever and innovative. They’d have to be like US.

We have to fund it now in order to generate the principal to earn the interest to pay for this bill in three years, plus cover Social Security and Medicare, since they’ve run them both into the hole, too. They’d be better off imitating these two fine American women than the likes of Hillary, Madonna, etc.
Anyway, I think it is interesting that you’re telling me to “shut up”. That’s what Obumma wants Fox News to do. It is also interesting that you imply that Fox isn’t “real news” . That, again, is what Obummer and his thugs say about Fox. Do you EVER have an original thought? Must you be such a little puppy that follows its master everywhere he goes? Public Support for ObamaCare Collapses under the Facts

When it comes to ObamaCare, poll after poll shows the public can be fairly supportive—until they realize how much they stand to personally lose. Americans have told pollsters for months about fears that their health coverage will disappear. They’re also reporting unprecedented concern that health reform will only add to the nation’s out-of-control federal deficits. And no matter how much the Administration says other people will pay for health reform (i.e., the rich), the American people know better.

One Senator can stage a filibuster:

“A filibuster can take place at several stages during the legislative process in the Senate. Before a bill is even introduced, a senator can place an anonymous hold on a bill through the majority or minority leaders. A hold is simply a threat to stage a filibuster if the bill comes up for a vote. A motion to bring up a bill can be filibustered. Amendments to a bill can be filibustered. Appointments to conference committees with House members to consider the bill can be filibustered. Conference committee reports on the bill can be filibustered.”

So, the people will win- win piles of taxes and fees that will force them into public government health plans which is the goal of Obama anyway.

It is time to say this quite simply: There is no such thing in Washington as bipartisanship. This is not to say that there will be no such thing as bipartisan bills. Republicans will vote for Democratic initiatives when it appears to further their goals. But insofar as crossover votes have come to be seen as representative of an elusive character trait or political spirit known as “bipartisanship,” it is time to let go of an increasingly damaging fantasy. And if we let go of the myth of bipartisanship and embrace the reality of continued minority obstructionism, that may also mean it’s time to let go of the filibuster.

The most troubling aspect of the Republican performance on the stimulus package was that, viewed rationally, they were not wrong. If Barack Obama passes $800 billion of government spending through a Democratic Congress and the infusion of federal money accelerates job creation, than the one industry likely to contract is “Republican politicians.” Obama’s approval ratings will rise, as will those of his partners in the Democratic Congress. They will campaign on their record in 2010 and make gains in the midterm elections. Republican congressmen will lose their jobs. Those who don’t lose their jobs will become less powerful as their numbers dwindle.

But they can profit from Obama’s failure. And that’s their current strategy: Attack the stimulus, try to make it smaller and less effective, express united opposition to its existence, and attempt to wrest electoral advantage if it fails.

It is in the minority’s interest, in other words, for the majority party to prove ineffectual at addressing America’s most urgent problems. Fundamentally, all successful opposition-party campaigns boil down to the same message: We told you so. When the opposition can’t say that, as with the Democrats in the aftermath of the Iraq War, they tend to struggle.

In the House, this incentive structure doesn’t much matter. The minority is a passive, albeit vocal, observer. The structure of the Senate, however, makes it possible for the minority to effectively ensure the failure of the majority. Which brings us to the filibuster.

Comment by Liz

“The filibuster is almost as old as America itself,” editorialized The New York Times in late 2004. “In 1790, senators filibustered to prevent Philadelphia from becoming the permanent U.S. capital. In the centuries since, senators have used their privilege of unlimited debate to fend off actions supported by a bare majority of the Senate, but deeply offensive to the minority.”

That’s the traditional history of the filibuster. It’s the sort of empty fluff you might find in a book report for a high school civics class. But the actual history of the filibuster tells a rather different story. Far from being a sacrosanct feature of American politics, the filibuster is, every few generations, understood to be so detrimental to governance that it is radically weakened.

Originally, the filibuster was a feature of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. As the House of Representatives expanded, however, long debates grew too unwieldy, and it was eliminated outright. But the Senate held firm to the principle of “unlimited debate,” at least at first. In 1841, Henry Clay threatened to end the filibuster after the minority used it to doom his banking bill. He was rebuked by his colleagues. Indeed, in the early Senate, filibustering required neither a bloc of support nor unity among senators. Rather, it was the right of each and every senator to speak as long as he deemed necessary. It was, at this point, a guardian of minority opinions rather than a tool of minority parties.

But by 1917, this state of affairs had grown unwieldy. At the urging of President Woodrow Wilson, the Senate adopted rule 22, a provision allowing the Senate to close debate with a two-thirds majority vote. “Cloture” was born.

Comment by Liz

The 20th century saw the filibuster emerge as the favored tactic of the embattled Southern minority. Strom Thurmond, in fact, set the record for the longest filibuster: 24 hours and 18 minutes to delay the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Now associated with a corrupt and regressive regime, few remained idealistic about the filibuster’s role in American life. In 1975, the post-Watergate Congress slashed its power even further: Now a three-fifths majority vote could close debate in the Senate.

The filibuster, however, has become more common as it’s been weakened. In the 1973-1974 Congress – the year before the filibuster was weakened to 60 votes – there were 31 filibusters. In the 2007-2008 Congress, the filibuster was used more than 100 times (comparatively, the 2005-2006 Congress, when Democrats were in the minority, saw 54 filibusters). It has become an accepted feature of the Senate’s architecture. “You have to have 60 votes to pass anything,” says Matthew Miller, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The tactic is so embedded into the psychology of the institution that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid does not even force actual filibusters. If there are not enough votes to ensure cloture, the legislation is simply tabled. No long-winded speeches needed.

Comment by Liz

The filibuster does, as The New York Times said, “fend off actions supported by a bare majority of the Senate, but deeply offensive to the minority.” But those “actions” amount to successful governance. What offends the minority is losing more seats. Generations before us have recognized this, and so long as the filibuster has been in existence, so too have wise politicians tried to constrain its capacity for mischief. But the experience of recent years suggests that the filibuster can no longer be contained. Foiling the majority is too tempting, it makes too much electoral sense. And so it may be time to finish the job that Henry Clay started. It may be time to abolish the filibuster.

And just to show how stupid you are, yes I work for the Government, which is why I can see, from the inside, how wasteful it is, but unlike elected officials I pay for my health insurance, just like every other American that has a like package.

It goes up every year but close to what Congress gives us as a raise, if we get one.

The day of free health care for Government workers died 3 decades ago.

Good reading material as always. Thank you.

“Dog’s king is Tammy Bruce – and vice-king is Sarah Palin!”

Your colossal ignorance is well known to millions at this point but an inability to even distinguish between genders is beyond pathetic and REALLY takes the cake!

Do you also need a lesson on the birds and the bees?

BTW, I’m NOT your “sweetheart” and I’ll thank you not to address me as such!

I wouldn’t touch a disgusting creature like you with a ten foot pole for all the booze in the world and not even after drinking all of it!

Thanks Kevin – it’s so refreshing to hear from you – someone else who knows what’s going on. It’s so hard to understand how some people think – but that’s why I’m here. I’m trying to see the world through their eyes, and it’s quite a perspective! Such angry people usually have many underlying issues. I try not to be mean, but it’s not easy – you can see the way they talk to me. I have to try harder, but I do have to bring out the worst in them so I can assess it. It’s kind of double-edged sword.

Comment by Liz

I certainly can’t recall calling you sweetheart Dog – maybe it was your girlfriend! LOL

I do try to be nice, but I would never go THAT far!

Comment by Liz

I’m so proud of you Dog. You know that Tammy and Sarah are women’s names, but do you know for sure what gender they are? Think about it!

LOL

Who were you calling sweetheart if not me?

I was the one who posted the vid that you were spewing your usual nonsense about.

Dog, I don’t watch your videos – I must have been talkin to Carolynro because she is the only one who (sometimes) has the courtesy to address me by name. I don’t get Glenn Beck, and I don’t know how anyone does! LOL And Bachmann is about the biggest joke of the GOP. Her h-a-t-e-speak is quoted quite a lot on the opposing network. These people are so “out there” (with you), and so far out of the mainstream it’s embarrassing for the country. They are embarrassing REAL conservatives with REAL conservative values, because they have no real values.

People who would h-a-t-e others because of their political beliefs are an interesting study – and I’ve learned a few things – but you wouldn’t like my conclusions. I’m pretty sure I’m spot on about you all though.

FOX has cooperated nicely with my subject – “the new way Americans get their news”.

Have a nice day! :) (don’t worry, I’ll NEVER call you sweetheart)

Sony reported a smaller-than-expected 26.3 billion yen ($289 million) quarterly loss as cost cuts combined with healthy sales of PlayStation 3 game consoles and Michael Jackson hits helped it inch toward recovery.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant has been battered by the global slowdown, sliding prices of gadgets and its failure to produce new blockbuster consumer products. But Tokyo-based Sony Corp. said Friday it now expects a smaller flow of red ink for the full fiscal year through March 2010.

It’s forecasting a 95 billion yen ($1 billion) loss compared with the initial projection for a 120 billion yen ($1.3 billion) loss. The new forecast is marginally better than the 98.9 billion yen loss it suffered the previous fiscal year.

Chief Executive Howard Stringer has promised a turnaround at Sony since taking the helm in 2005, but convincing results have been slow in coming.

Liz,

Regarding your 9:36 pm post:

I noticed some here are quick to attack personally one with an opposing viewpoint. I noticed angry people do have underlying issues.

There are good things I wish to say to you. For starters, do not stop offering an opposing view and your research backing it.

Comment by Liz

I will Kevin, thanks. It’s not easy to find “nice” people on blogs because most of them just come to complain. Usually blogs have “drive-by” posts, but this group likes to wallow with others in their misery and discuss the pundits they believe are spewing “the truth” – which is perfect for my project.

You have a great day. I have a busy one coming up! :)

Some 10th Amendment actions taken by state legislatures recently….

National health care nullification – As of October 2009, five states have introduced legislation which would declare certain provisions of any proposed national health care bill to be null and void within the state. Such provisions include mandatory participation in such a system as well as preserving the right of a patient to pay a health care professional for treatment (and for the professional to accept it) outside of a single-payor system. Arizona’s legislation passed as a proposed constitutional amendment, to be submitted to the voters in 2010.

“Bring the Guard Home” – As of October 2009, five states have introduced legislation which would permit the Governor of the state to recall any National Guard troops from overseas deployments (such as in Iraq and Afghanistan); none have advanced beyond the introductory stage.

I’m all for “opt-out” as long as the voters are for it. I do really think national healthcare is an issue that should be brought before the voters – and then we don’t have to rely on polls.

I think it’s funny how you call every conservative an “idiot”, Liz. Yet, Bachmann is in Congress. Are you? Glen Beck is a best-selling author. He currently has 3 books, all of which are best sellers. How many books have You written? We on the conservative side know who the idiots are. They’re the ones who are going to be the minority party in a few years. In fact, I hope some of them get impeached. I don’t think we can wait until 2012 or even until 2010. I see a BACKLASH coming against liberal “thought”; and it’s well deserved.

Comment by Sterling

Throwing around insults like idiot and moron do little to help advance one’s thoughts. If one truly seek to educate or inform others, then one treats others with respect at all times, especially when they are rude to you. Assuming that others are closed-minded to new ideas wins little interest in one’s argument. Most people here have much to contribute, whether presenting from the left or the right, or straight down the middle. It’s an unfortunate circ umstance to find ourselves in the middle of such vitriol. To attack one because their opinion is different than your own, lends no credence to you argument.

I hope you all were able to interrupt your destructive ad hominem fiddle-dee-dees to hear Ronan Tynan’s magnificent rendition of “God Bless America” on Fox and Friends just now. It would remind all what we are supposed to be about – and maybe about what we are losing with hormone-splashing bickerings among ourselves.

Sterling, you threw me into the vitriol long before I did it to you! Funny how you can’t look at yourselves! It’s really quite sad. I’ve noticed O’Reilly calming down lately – wonder what’s up with that!!! He’s staying away from “pettiness” – and refuses to get into it. He put Laura in her place last night.

Not playing your game anymore, Liz. You know full well who started what around here. As I have said many times, I have proof on my side. Go back and find where I ever started anything but health disagreement with you. You won’t because you can’t. Anyone who cares to can go back to April when you first graced us with yourself and read for themselves what you said. And btw, saying that someone else started it is no excuse for continuing it. It doesn’t grant you immunity and it certainly doesn’t make you look any smarter or better for it.

I think O’Reilly doesn’t hang around flaming, destructive, liberals as a rule. I think that is the secret to his calmness. I honestly think liberalism will someday be a thing of the past; and historians will look back and view it as a philosophy that no one wants anymore. Sort of like Manifest Destiny, appeasement, slavery, etc. It’s time is passing fast. It should never have had a time to begin with.

Just another observation from the back of the turnip truck (we have onions today, too).

The White House announces that the Recovery Act has created or saved 640,000 plus jobs. I don’t know the exact dollar amount spent, but it is close to 200 billion. I got out my Big Chief tablet and a crayon, and I figure that comes to around $300,000.00 per job. Whoopie!! Where do I sign up??

Comment by olinl

To all you working stiffs out there in cyberspace, employed or unemployed – How is the stimulus working for you?

Comment by olinl

Aside from a small amount of subcontract work at Fort Polk, I can’t see where the stimulus has had any positive impact on my business. By the way, the work at Fort Polk is DOD money, not tied to the stimulus!!!

Comment by Just Another Blogger

Yes, Olinl. I love the propaganda that the liberal press puts out. The $300,000 you’re talking about is only the stimulus (Porkulus) package. I’ll tell you another stat that I saw on Beck(You may have seen it too.). We ALL (every man, boy, woman, and girl–every BABY) in America owes $343,000 dollars toward the national debt. Isn’t that great? Of course, the liberals don’t mind; because they won’t have to pay it. Only their children and grandchildren will pay out their noses in taxes. And as we all know, liberals don’t care anything about children; since most of them favor abortion anyway.
And as for anyone “throwing” anyone into the vitriol, that isn’t true. When anyone attacks another without any provocation except the fact that the victim is expressing an opinion contrary to the attacker’s, that is not being “thrown”. That is called not having a real rebuttal but only a determination to jam one’s opinion down the throat of another. I really miss Roy. He was intelligent and articulate. He left, I believe, because of the incessant bickering that all of us are doing (including me). I propose that we behave like Americans, as Capmotion admonishes us. I’m willing if you all are.

Comment by Liz

My point was made beautifully in the last 4 posts or so – your attitudes reflect those of the meanest, angriest right-wing nuts of the GOP who call themselves conservatives. You don’t really know what conservative is – and it’s NOT Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Hannity et al. They give conservatives a bad name. Real conservatives are appalled at their behavior. Do you really think the country wants to be just like you? I DON’T THINK SO!!!

Both parties have their extremists, but I changed parties because the right went way to far for me. It’s refreshing to see O’Reilly starting to come back to reality. I hope he keeps it up. I used to like him – most of the time. He does have a temper – and was fired from Entertainment Tonight because of it – but FOX likes that.

Liz,

I suppose this is what I get for being sick for a few days. Tell me, when did Erik become YOUR sweetheart? Did you think that I wouldn’t have anything to say about that? At this point I couldn’t care less about your political stance. All I have to say is that Erik is NOT your sweetheart! Do yourself a favor and REMEMBER that!! You have made many remarks about me being a dominatrix. If that were true I would’ve kicked your a$$ LONG ago! If the opportunity still arises, your a$$ is DONE!! Got it?!

So Lizard, in closing I will tell you that you need to be careful of what comes out of that DUMB mouth of yours! I’m NOT that far away from you, and would LOVE a road trip about now! So if I were you I’d shut my pie hole! Troy, Michgan huh?? Interesting…

Comment by olinl

Okay. For those of you that are too dense to comprehend the question, I will ask it another way.

Tell me something positive about the stimulus. If your answer is the temporary jobs created, then I ask, How will these jobs be sustained next year?

Comment by Liz

You are not talking about the jobs that were “saved”! Without the stimulus the unemployment rate would be 15-20% right now, but of course you won’t hear this on FOX! They just want to minimalize the impact of the stimulus (reference the article I posted yesterday about their strategy) because they think that somehow that makes them look better. Millions of jobs were saved. Watch another network sometime and find out the truth. It’s creating more jobs every day, but we won’t know the full impact of it for a while. Don’t be impatient!!!

(I know this falls on deaf ears because you only hear what you wanna hear, but do it and you might change your mind)

A flotilla of rescue vessels continued its search Saturday for nine people feared dead at sea following an air collision between a Coast Guard aircraft and a Marine Corps helicopter.

Six Coast Guard cutters, three Navy ships and multiple helicopters searched the ocean off Southern California. Rescuers had found several pieces of debris from both aircraft but there was no sign of the victims.

Thursday’s crash involved a Coast Guard C-130 with a seven-member crew and a Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra with two aboard as it flew in formation near the Navy’s San Clemente Island, a site with training ranges for amphibious, air, surface and undersea warfare.

The collision occurred as the Coast Guard airplane was itself carrying out a search for a missing boatman.

Crews will search the Pacific’s chilly waters overnight for nine people lost two days ago when a Marine Corps helicopter and a U.S. Coast Guard plane crashed in midair, though hope of finding survivors fades with each hour, a top Coast Guard commander said Saturday.

Rear Adm. Joseph Castillo said at a late afternoon news conference that there was still a chance of survivors among the seven military personnel aboard the Coast Guard C-130 and the two in the Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter despite water temps in the low 60s because all had access to heat-retaining drysuits and were in excellent physical shape.

The two aircraft collided at 7:10 p.m. Thursday as the Coast Guard was conducting a search operation for a missing boater. The Marine helicopter was flying in formation with another Cobra escort helicopter and two large troops transports en route to San Clemente Island, 50 miles off the coast, for a nighttime training exercise.
