Alisyn in the Greenroom

Saturday Morning

Hi Everyone,

What’s the best excuse you’ve used to get out of work on a day you weren’t really sick?  Bogus sick days are getting more common…

what do you think of our debate about whether convicted sex offenders who’ve served their time should be allowed to go to church?  what if there’s a sunday school at the church with young children?  There’s a lawsuit brewing in North Carolina about this.

My favorite excuse is, “Alisyn was filling in on F&F this morning, how could I go to work?”

Good Morning Ms Alisyn,

I just call in and say I am taking a sick day. I don’t say I am sick, just that I need a sick day.

Looking forward to the show today. I hope you had a good week.

I was on my day off and the boss called to see if I could come in. I told him I would but had to take my mother to a doctor in Lubbock 120 miles away. He sounded a little doubtful but said ok.

I looked out the window and there was a white out blizzard outside. He never said a word to me when I showed up my next working day.

Morning all, work for myself, oops sorry honey WIFE, no excuses apply.

Comment by carolynro

Don’t remember faking a sick day. Is this the topic today? Yikes

Comment by RyanGA

I can’t believe that in a time when so many people are out of work, people call in sick.

Comment by chas

Here’s a question, who is paying the boss to leave work and check up on the employee?

chas

Comment by chas

You could call in and say you are sick and tired of work. :lol:

chas

Comment by RyanGA

@chas Well then I’ll take your job, gladly.

Comment by carolynro

How about people who complain about having to work when they are work.

Comment by BruceWV

Sorry Alisyn this is off topic but can you tell me who gives NASA permision to blow holes in the moon?
What if China or Russia wants to follow suit?
Dos’nt the moon have a profound affect on the Earth, gravity,tides,etc?
Don’t the farmers in Cal. need water?
Don’t we need N gas and oil?
Don’t we need to take care of the Earth before we screw up the moon?
I don’t know just call me crazy but I just don’t get it.

Comment by RyanGA

I guess there are a million things we would rather be doing, so thats natural…so long as you show up, I don’t feel slighted because I’m sending out hundreds of resumes with no matches.

Comment by chas

As far as I am concerned Ryan after the first of the year you can have it. I retire at the end of the year.

Know anything about jet engines? ;)

chas

Comment by RyanGA

@BruceWV I thought the craters in the moon are evidence that it has been assaulted without consequence already.

Comment by IndependentVoter

When people complain about having to work, I tell them, “If it was fun, instead of paying you, you would pay us a cover charge and bring dates here on Friday nights.”

Comment by RyanGA

I could perhaps market one, and while that is certainly important, I am no engineer. I’ll take a reference tho!

Comment by BruceWV

Your right Ryan but why take the chance and why waste the money

Comment by RyanGA

What line of business IndependentVoter? Is it that grueling?

Comment by carolynro

Chas: sending supervisors out to work happened when I was a teacher. We had a horrible blizzard and they drove around to see who was really snowed in. People who lived outside of town were allowed a paid snow day. Those of us in town were penalized for not working. A grievance was filed and the employees won. I guess that is the closest I ever came to calling in with sort of a lame excuse but we all agreed to boycott being made to drive when the police were asking us all to not go out on the roads.

Comment by RyanGA

I am no expert, but I think the general argument for the Space Program has been the number of other advancements that are direct derivatives. But the money issue is a good argument…for a lot of issues ;) .

Morning all, I have a migraine. I did have a boss call me once I was not happy @ all! Next day I went to her boss & she got in trouble! Do I have say the two us never got along & she was voted in office & new. She never did it again.

Comment by capmotion

Good Morning, Ms Ali, and Everyone.

I agree with Bruce WV and expand the query – what if those living on the moon decide to blast us back? We always think American “exceptionalism” empowers us to attack people and to blow up territories, but we get our noses out of self-righteous joint if those we attack have the temerity to attack back.

[Hm...., maybe I'm obviously too sick to go to work today, I guess!]

Not grueling at all, Ryan…. financial services office work. Some people are just whiners. Unlike me, who is a winer….

Comment by RyanGA

@IndependentVoter Well I was born to succeed and I’m underappreciated (plus the economy hasn’t helped). So if you ever want to network, I don’t complain, keep my head down and have great people skills…

Comment by IndependentVoter

We actually don’t have “sick days” where I work. We get a certain number of days off each year that we call Personal Time Off and you can use those as sick days or vacation days, we don’t care. No one cares if you re really sick or just out enjoying a beautiful day.

Bruce, those thoughts went through my mind also. Heck we can’t seem to get help for our troops because someone who @ the top can’t make up his mind yet there is time to blow up a innocent moon. Ironic that on the same day he won a peace prize, we attack the moon! Hmm

Fox and Friends has been one of my favorite shows.
I understand reducing the height of the viewing screen on my TV (I have an older model TV).
However, the LARGE BANNERS at the bottom of the now smaller vertical TV screen are HORRIBLE!!!
The BANNERS block the view of sometimes almost 1/3 of the screen and prevents us from seeing the entire bottom part of the picture.

The LARGE BANNERS are just way TOO BIG!
I do not enjoy the program near as much now and I find myself changing channels and actually watching other programs.

The HUGE BANNERS at the bottom of the screen are just way TOO BIG!!!!

Too bad that you are ruining your show this way.

A loyal fan, but not so much anymore…

Comment by IndependentVoter

@marine1967, We are having a “flu day” test Monday. We are asking most of our people to stay home and link in from their home computers and work from home that day. If it works we will be ready for a serious flu problem… if people start getting the flu we will just have everyone work from home for a few days so they don’t catch it from coworkers. Just trying to be prepared for a serious fly outbreak.

Also if our test works Monday, we may eventually let people work from home certain days as long as we can monitor that they are getting the job done from home.

Comment by marine1967

IndependentVoter – Great to hear you are planning ahead …. hopefully, you are planning for something that won’t be needed … I teach and our District has many plans per school and per district in case we are told to close … Teaching from home is not an option though …. LOL.

My daughter works for Whole Foods in the corporate office and they get to work from home some. I think it is fabulous.

We own a small business and I was the boos and the problem was always having to work when I really WAS sick, or the kids were. I remember once feeling terribly guilty because I had to put a sick child on the truck seat with a pillow, drive to a warehouse and pick up bags of concrete to take to a jobsite that was wet and caving in to save the job. I hated having to do it but had no choice.

The sex offender in church issue hit our church, and it was a problem. The pastor mentioned the matter involving the particular individual to the assembled throngs, and although everyone piously spouted the “forgive they neighbor” rag, most were not comfortable with the idea with the offender being there. There is no easy solution. One who has done grotesquely anti-normative things will never be inspired to course the right route unless exposed to normative experiences, but what if those with whom he seeks to associate or be exposed don’t want him around? We get collisions between humanity, due process rights of offenders, associational rights of the organizations, false pieties [which themselves have first amendment protections], etc. I don’t think people should be arrested for that [unless he is teaching a sunday school class of 9 year old girls, etc.], but what is the solution? Ostracism by government command, including internal ostracism, is illegal in this “enlightened” society, and the stranglehold on sex offenders about places they cannot be is approaching that illegal ostracism point, but what to do?

Re: Sex Offenders in CHurch — because sex offenders must register, people may know their identities. My thinking is: how many convicted felons have I sat next to in church because I never their crimes? I dont see the big deal unless the sex offender is a child sex offender and their are kids around. I think this guy has a huge point — simply for pointing out hyocrisy that runs rampant in some church communities. It gives new meaning to the word CHRISTIAN!

I would say, let the sex offender in the church, but nowhere near the youth group… get him (or her) church counseling and an accountability partner. I am involved with youth mentoring, church youth groups and other non-profits geared to at-risk youth. Most have a policy of background checks for all volunteers to make sure they have no sex-related arrests especially involving minors.

Comment by retrotx

There are, however, guys who get labeled “sex offenders” under the law when it is a 15 year old consenting girl and 17 year old boy situation. That is a little different but is treated the same way by the law.

Comment by Bajette

It’s almost a moot point now-as with the Swine flu we are now told to stay home if sick-There were people who used to feel honorable or martyred that they went to work sick-see I’m here.
Now all games are off-Those that used sick days when not necessary are now have to watch out not to cry wolf to often-if they really are sick-they need those days.those that went to work sick-must stay home.They cannot fear losing their jobs and they are told to stay home-Bring your sick note.

As far is calling in sick when not sick, I have to say there have been times when I was just tired and could not face the mad rush of getting the kids and myself out the door on time. So I have in the past blamed it on the kids. My employer has strict rules about call ins (three a year, sick or not) so you have to save those days for real sickness.
It seems strange to me that a church would complain about a sex offender going to church. Isn’t the Christian faith supposed to be about redemption? Children are usually in another room during services and even in the main area no child would be in danger as adults are there with them. My question would be who was it that complained about him being in church? If it was the church then I guess he was in the wrong church. If it was his parole officer then the rules need to be changed. The church is supposed to be there to save and deliver people from sin by the power of God. It is unfortunate that many churches had lost all knowledge of what Christ came to earth for and for the most part do not even allow Jesus in the building.

Nobel Peace prize… means nothing now…what did he do?

Comment by Liz K

Retro, I was just about to post the story of a young man in our community that had that exact experience. Technically, it was statutory rape under the law even though the girl consented. Her mother found out about it and filed charges. The term sex offender is too broad. As far as I’m concerned anyone convicted of sexual crimes against a child should never see the light of day of course.

She wasn’t there very long, needless to say. She was also “dancing” at night and we aren’t talking about ballet. I tried to counsel her about that but it was hopeless. She started dressing inappropriately and was late and absent a lot. The men could hardly wait to see what she didn’t have on each day, though! And one company started making daily deliveries to us! haha!

How do these people ever get a chance to turn their lives around if they can’t live a normal life? Thank you, Alisyn, for pointing out that not all offenders are molesters. Some offenders aren’t the least bit interested in children. One of my former students was 18 and had a 15 year old girlfriend. When she became pregnant, her father turned the boy in. He is now on the registry for 10 years. Should he be kept out of church? Should he not be given a second chance? The justice system needs to look at each case individually before sentencing.

It is about time for a reality check on sex offenders. We base everything on emotion rather than facts and the news media does help because reporters do not do their homework. I heard a contributor on O’Reilly the other night say that sex offenders have a recidivism rate 4 times that of other offenders. The truth is that their recidivism is the the lowest of any class of offenders except for murderers and this includes child molesters. Check your department of justice statistics. We have done a great disservice by focusing everyone’s attention on registered sex offenders rather than being alert to the greatest danger area which is friends and family. This is illustrated very well by the 62 year old man who was just arrested for molesting his former girlfriend’s grandchildren. I have worked with many sex offenders and most of them are good people who did a bad thing. Most of them have worked very hard to turn their life around and should be given the opportunity to prove themselves once again. The thing that I find very ironic in this situation is, if Christ was running this church, would he stop the man from attending or would he welcome him with open arms?

Fortunately, I have never had a job where that would have been necessary. Let’s see…I was my own boss, so I could make up any story to tell myself, and otherwise, my little part time jobs {2} and other volunteer things I have done, have not necessitated being too creative. I mean to say, if I “don’t feel good”, I can leave…and do leave. AS it happens however, once I am ‘there’, I usually don’t leave at all, as I ‘feel’ better than I thought I was going to, or there is just too much work, to take off after making the effort to be there to begin with……..so, one opts to do what one wishes to do, and then suffer the consequences of that choice. LIKE…the work fr today undone, must be done the next day, so pick, hum? :) Usually easier to just get it done!!! ha! or so I have learned along this journey, and so I was told by those older and wiser than myself, at the beginning of this journey called life. :)

~~~~~~~~~~~
One might wonder if the ’sex offender’ has just acquired a more stealthy behavior, while ‘free to roam’ the streets. An interesting comment, I think. Prefer “they” are away fr me & mine, tho. :) Jesus? Prob not approving. :)
Oh? Still don’t want them by me cap. Do you want ‘them’ living by you or yours? Prefer not to be ‘the one’ chosen, while ‘they’ are ‘trying to find themselves’, hum? I prefer they make their ‘journey’ to Christ, behind nice sturdy bars. Yep…pretty sure of that one. lol :)
i must say this is a sticky one. i think there is no better place for someone like that to be. however to putt children in harms way is not ok. since the government is so good at “fixing everything” mabey they have a program for this as well.
Joe Evers,
I applaud your work with the ’sick’ of our society. I do not agree they should be let loose to offend again. I actually could care less what the nums are on recidivism. ONE is one too many in the case of the sex offender. IF your life is stolen fr you by another, whether by a violent sex act or murder, why would I be sympathetic to these people? They can ‘recover’ and find ‘God’, behind bars, where they may minister to others, while being ‘cured’, thereby leaving the innocent citizen out of harms way. :)
Bummer, too late for the football picks. Power was out last night and this morning. Good luck on the picks Alisyn!
Hi Stacia,
With DNA, the courts can usually know if someone is guilty or not. I do absolutely think it should be proved beyond a shadow of doubt, but once proved beyond a shadow of doubt, the sex offender needs to be put away for life. I think Joe’s efforts to minister these people is worthy. I just do not agree they should be loosed on society to offend again. ONE being too many, as said….nice sturdy bars between me and them is how it should be, or, of course, they can live next door to Joe and his fam, and he can personally be responsible? No…bad plan. I like the nice sturdy bars, better. lol Yep..for sure. lol :)
“The thing that I find very ironic in this situation is, if Christ was running this church, would he stop the man from attending or would he welcome him with open arms?”
Well, my best guess is He wouldn’t “suffer the little children to come unto him the sex offender”. I would not welcome someone with open arms who had “done a bad thing” to a child. I ain’t Jesus. And if it was MY child he had done a “bad thing” to, society wouldn’t have to worry about his recidivism rate because he would be unable to recidiv after I got through with him.
Hi Merry,
One need not mix up the forgiveness offered by Jesus, with societies responsibility to protect the citizens fr evil, the sex offender and especially the pedophile, being amongst the worst of the lot, of course.
I couldn’t get firefox, to ‘fire up’ at all this morning Sterling. boo hoo!!! Chked my email, however, so that was a good thing. Seems to be working fine now, but had to get to it in a roundabout way. lol No worries, however. I won’t turn this darn thang off again. That should solve that prob, hum? HA! lol :) grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Comment by Gini
And of course, IF one is going to invoke Jesus, one must also recognize the Devil? and the ‘free choice’ given each soul to choose…this is often left out, when invoking/blaming Jesus for the evil in this world. lol
I agree Bajette. Again…ONE offense is one too many. The consequences to the victim far outstretches any consideration to the offender. Nice sturdy bars…yep. lol
How do these people ever get a chance to turn their lives around if they can’t live a normal life? Thank you, Alisyn, for pointing out that not all offenders are molesters. Some offenders aren’t the least bit interested in children. One of my former students was 18 and had a 15 year old girlfriend. When she became pregnant, her father turned the boy in. He is now on the registry for 10 years. Should he be kept out of church? Should he not be given a second chance? The justice system needs to look at each case individually before sentencing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t think this is exactly what one might be addressing, or at least, not what I am addressing. One cannot excuse criminal behavior by a pedophile or predatory rapists, with the consensual sex between teens. Eighteen is an arbitrary age, picked by the courts, to reflect maturity. I don’t happen to agree that maturity can be measured by age, always, so I always find it ironic when this happens, as your comment reflects. :)

Comment by Donna Kappa

Ally, do you have Guy’s recipe for pork and bacon from Friday’s show?

Comment by Gini

Of course, our society is itself confused abt the age of maturity. Eighteen? Hummm…now, you are old enough to go to war, but not old enough to have a drink, or buy a car w/o a co maker, or or or or! A curiosity for sure….as we all know eighteen isn’t one we remember as being particularly stellar, perhaps? YIKES! :mrgreen: Rather a dumb age, I must think. All ‘grown up’, with ABSOLUTELY no authority!!! lol Yep…that abt covers it folks. lol :)

Who’s in who’s pocket? Obviously some people don’t understand the system and this is the foremost reason the Government needs to stay out of the health care system.

Dear Fox and Friends S.O.S,
I agree with the North Carolina Parish about banning Registered Sex Offenders in their Parish..
I’ve been working on a Sex Offender Child Safety Ordinance for 2 years, here in the elite town of Greenwich, Ct.We have the support of the First Selectman, the Superintendent of schools, the Board of Educations, Chief of police and the department.The Ordinance has gone before the representative town meeting {RTM} for final approval twice in June of ‘09 and Sept of ‘09. This was postponed and re-written twice to address all of their concerns. They’re fearful of being sued by the ACLU.
Basically, the ordinance would NOT allow Registered Sex Offenders in areas where children would normally congregate, such as parks, beaches, playgrounds, etc.Several of the Committee chairmen of the {RTM}, that reports to the full body have been less than accurate.The irony all of this, at the {RTM} and all other meetings leading up to the vote, we’ve had a registered sex offender speaking out against the Ordinance stating that it’s unconstitutional. However, in doing my research I have found that this Ordinance was challenged in 5 states at the supreme court level and has been upheld as NOT being unconstitutional.Hopefully, some day they will come to their senses and that in the meantime nothing happenes to any child.

Called in sick, food poisening. Two supervisors drove 25 miles out to my home, peeked in my windows and doors to see if I was home. My car was gone because my husband went to the store for me. It scared my neighbor, she almost called the police because she thought someone was breaking in my house. When I went to work the next day, I was grilled, (like I was under arrest), about my sickness, by two supervisors and a chief agent. I worked for Delta Air Lines. This was in the 70’s. If it was now, I would have sued. The station manager finally interceded on my behalf and made them cease their behavior.

I was mortified by their behavior. Never got an apology from them either.

A bus carrying a celebrated Utah high school band swerved off an Idaho interstate and crashed on its side Saturday night, killing an instructor and injuring some students, police and a school official said.

The students were rushed by helicopter ambulance to a hospital in Pocatello, John Miller, director of the American Fork, Utah, high school band, told The Associated Press. He said he didn’t know how many students were hurt or how seriously.

Idaho state police said a preliminary investigation showed that the bus driver had a medical condition that caused the crash. The police did not immediately provide more details.

The Salt Lake Tribune said witnesses at the scene identified the person killed as the school’s woodwind instructor. Police said the victim’s name was not being released pending notification of family.

Hello Alisyn,

I wanted to respond earlier and it has been bothering me that I didn’t. I do understand the law regarding sex offenders, but maybe, each case should be evaluated and treated differently. If I had small children I would definitely be concerned. In the meantime, if sex offenders want to attend church, it can be done on the internet. Northland Church is available from Longwood FL. They have several services that can be attended along with online pastors that are there for anyone that needs to talk. The conversations can be made private. This is a non denominational church. I hope this will help someone that needs to attend church from home.

Thanks

Marcia

I haven’t asked for a full day, but sometimes I invent some excuse to get a little late like “my car broke” or “I had to do some personal stuff at that very time and date” which is not very smart because nowadays you can do everything from your work computer.

It’s difficult to judge if a sex offender should be allowed in church after their time is done. But if you think about it, if a robber is allowed to work and visit any store with the risk that he repeat his felony, why not a sex offender? If they are that dangerous then they should have harder conviction times. And my last thought about this, as well as a robber, if a sex offender wants to repeat his crime, he would do it at church, at the park, at home, etc.

The Russian Soyuz capsule carrying Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte and two other space travelers landed safely in Kazakhstan on Sunday, ending the entertainment tycoon’s mirthful space odyssey.

Laliberte, who wore a bulbous clown nose during his stay aboard the International Space Station, was extracted from the cramped Soyuz capsule Sunday morning following its landing in the steppes of northern Kazakhstan.

After the landing, he was carried from the capsule wearing the round red nose.
