Morning folks! I wish I could have gone to Washington- couldn’t afford the time or money right now. The tea party protestors work for a living and fund their own protests, unlike Acorn and SEIU. We had two buses I know of going from north of Houston with about two hundred people, leaving Thursday night, driving straight through with shower stops, marching today and then turning around and coming back by Sunday night. More are flying out to DC. That’s dedication and real “grassroots”, not “astroturf”. They were asking on their website for people to donate if they couldn’t go to some who wanted to go but needed help to go. It cost $230.00 No billions in government Acorn money there, huh? I hope a million show up, and they just may.

I disagree you can praise kids to much and shouldn’t tell them they are smart. There are studies that contradict this. They studied this by telling teachers certain kids were smart and the kids performed better who the teachers “expected” to be smart. I don’t think you should make excuses for your kids but I think positive reinforcement works best.

Oh and the point of my post…ARG! I knew many years ago that the 'Praise your kid no matter what' idea was gonna backfire bigtime! What do they tell their first boss when the school praising ends? Or do companies all just go under because they cannot perform with the other companies for fear of hurting someone's KIDS feelings?

retrotx i agree……I think that praise helps kids build their self-confidence and their self image. To withhold that would do so much more damage! Of course kids shouldn’t be praised over EVERYTHING, but when its earned or deserved then let them know that they’ve done well!!

Didn’t that study show that the teachers developed a bias when they were told that certain kids were smart? I don’t think the kids knew, so the ones identified as smart didn’t really perform better. The problems the Millennial generation are experiencing in the workplace seem to be a result of endless praise for little effort. The author mentioned effort-based praise being beneficial to achievement.

Yes, the teacher’s perception of the kids became a self-fulfilling prophecy, but success breeds success is, I think, the point, and endouraging success and self-confidence helps them do better. I do believe that as a former teacher. There is usually not a problem with too much positive reinforcement, but the opposite.

Touched up pics? Who are they doing it for? Now THAT is the question. Most here know I am more interested in what is inside someone. For example, Is Liz ugly or beautiful? she is ugly, of course. Its what’s inside that applies. A not so ‘good looking’ person can be absolutely a beautiful person whereas an ugly person, no matter what they look like on the COVER (as in a book?) as in my example is ugly on the outside as well. Now figure a way to airbrush a mind and I may change my position on airbrushing. Maybe airbrush out Liz’s posts?

The report on “Praise Craze” on September 12 seems to support what Nathaniel Branden presented in his 1994 book “The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem”. One prediction that Branden made in this book was there would be a conflict in our culture between those who believe that “Self-Esteem” could be given away and those that “Self-Esteem” was something that comes more from behaviors like acting and thinking responsively. Interesting the two guests comments this morning seemed to demonstrate that conflict.

Brenden’s six pillars – 1.The Practice of living consciously, 2. The practice of self-acceptance, 3.The practice of self-responsibility 4. The practice self-assertiveness, 5. The practice of living purposefully, and 6. The practice of personal integrity.

FYI:Dr. Branden has been described as “The father of the concept of self esteem….”

Just dealing with life mostly….as I have been on my back for almost five years now, but my little eye problem was restricting my computer time until just recently and I’ve been trying to keep my promise to myself in keeping up with this blog daily, for a start, and maybe more as I go. I still have bad days with my eyesight where it’s all blur and can’t push it, but if I just wait and try again later the eye seem to calm down and give me a little playtime. I wasn’t even going to talk about my back here but I have started feeling guilty for being five miles away from the rally in DC and can’t be there in person. Let it be known I would have been there, and am there in spirit. Oh well… life had been pretty good to me in many ways so I’m really trying not to complain. Thanks for asking, Me, and careful what you wish for…lol.

Well thanks Kevin, but as you said, those are my issues, but the reason I make it here is all about Our Issues, as Americans. I have been proud of my Country ALL of my life….and the first time I ever had to wonder about it was when our ‘fearless Leader’ ’s wife found it in her heart to START being an American really set me thinking about it. Now I’m sure this will make ME the racist for , I guess, remembering who said it, and that she would never said that about being an African, (does it strike anybody else as strange that that always comes before American, especially those who aren’t even from Africa, but I am wandering off on another topic here) making it my fault again for not even having a family tree that was never rooted in a pre-slavery America. I have always got along with anybody that talks… less the few people that think my winter white skin ( Most used to ask me what part of Central America I come from during the summer ) meant I was a Slave holding American and I must owe them some serious cash. If an American with a ‘deeper tan’ sat down beside me I’d talk to them as if they had white skin, or brown, or yellow, or red, or blue, or green even, although I must admit, those last two got some questions the rest didn’t. You see, all I’ve ever seen, if that’s the way it has to be described, is what kind of person they are. Usually, a hi there or a how are you worked and I’d have my answer in seconds. Oh, and I’m sure I forgot to explain the ‘Central American’ part. I get a deep tan and I could hide easily in a Central American Country. Or on any construction site in America. I am an Electrician by trade and I have a High School Diploma and a few college classes. Poorly educated in your eyes I’m sure. I have been paying my way since I was in my twenties and will turn fifty next month. My education has been in life. I am just fine with who I turned out to be in mind anyway. The body is definitely another question.

Caver8: The race card is being used “big time” by the left as the reason Obama is losing popularity. I have been listening to Rush and he plays comments made by MSM reporters throughout his show each day to illustrate how shallow their reporting is and how they rarely scratch below the gossip surface to get background or history of issues. Quite often, these leftists try to convince each other that the people who disagree with Obama is because they cannot feature that there is a black president. They purposefully do this to feed into the victim mentality and to gin up the sensitivity of minorities who have had black theology preached to them for decades. In short, race is used as an excuse for why minorities are kept down and the media uses race as a reason for why people don’t like Obama.

I don’t know how Kevin fits into this but it seems that he is trying to find a reason to find fault with people on this blog. At first he seemed pleasantly surprised at what fun it is then for some reason he decided any mention of being dark skinned was an opening for him to find offense- unwarranted by the way!

A source on Rep. Joe Wilson’s campaign says his fundraising has broken $1 million — and surpassed that of his Democratic rival, Rob Miller — since his outburst of “You lie!” during President Obama’s address to Congress Wednesday.

The source said Wilson’s current tally is $1,005,021 from 18,859 donations amid a high-profile campaign on the Drudge Report and elsewhere telling conservatives that Wilson is “under attack” for his willingness to take on Obama.

ty chas, for your reading it for what I really said. I read it over and over and know I wasn’t making any issue about color….it was completely about NOT color. I absolutely despise those who are making race an issue at all. My point has always been race is used to drive wedges between people that have no reason to dislike each other but no matter what you do….those who squawk about the race issues in this country are the ones who are using the hidden hand to toss the logs in the furnace that fuels it. It’s a sad state of affairs when the fact is racism will be alive and well until those people take a look into their own mirror and see what it is that is keeping it alive. It’s not who they are mad at. Although they should be mad at them, and embarrassed by them as well.

Investigators searching for a Yale graduate student who disappeared days before her wedding reviewed security-camera footage and checked the blueprints of the building where she was last seen as the university offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to her whereabouts.

More than 100 local, state and federal law enforcement personnel were involved in the investigation into Tuesday’s disappearance of Annie Le, said Yale spokesman Tom Conroy.

Investigators were examining footage from some 75 cameras on and around the building where Le was last spotted. They did not immediately find any footage of her leaving the building.

There’s no critical thinking Kevin. Sadly, they don’t know it, but they are fighting for corporate greed. They don’t care about their own best interests, but in the long run they will be happy with national healthcare, just like they love their Medicare and Social Security. However, they will never give Obama the credit for it. They are just “sheeple” – easily led to the slaughter. It won’t happen this time though. We have to save them from themselves. I have no ill will against any of them though because I realize they are not thinking, however it’s hard not to get mad at them every now and then.

It’s hilarious to watch the interviews in DC yesterday. Their ignorance is so blatant. The ones that are not so ignorant are the ones who work in the insurance industry, because their jobs may depend on it.

WASHINGTON – A great speech is a combination of words and music, of content and color, of substance and emotion. When the speech is as important as the health care address that President Obama delivered to Congress on Wednesday night, it is worthwhile to go back and analyze the parts.

How weird was that? I mean how that posted….trippy…:)

So after watching it live on TV, I replayed it twice, the first time shutting out the argumentation and focusing on the tone and body language, the elements that communicate most directly with the audience. Then I listened again, weighing the assertions and evidence.

On the first run-through, I was struck again, as so often during the election campaign, by Obama’s ability to move an audience through his actor’s skills. At various times he conveyed deep-felt concern, anger, determination, reasonableness and firmness. The overall goal was to re-energize a slumping initiative, to summon and convey the determination to act – and act now.

The keynote was simple and almost substance-free: “The time for bickering is over.”

The reaction among his fellow Democrats was all that he could have hoped. They came off the mat, full of fight.

When I listened again, this time trying to tune out the rhetoric and trace the argument, the impression was strikingly different. For the first time I realized how far Obama has shifted from the proposition that marked his successful race for the White House.

Then, his great theme was “change we can believe in.” Now, the message is “change we need not fear.”

It is certainly understandable why he has shifted. This summer has been brutal to his hopes. A variety of doubts – some artificially fed by his opponents, others reflecting genuine questions about the costs and consequences of his reforms – have put the president on the defensive.

The classic response is to offer reassurance, to promise that nothing important to you, the voter, will be lost if Obama gets his way. The problem is that by emphasizing what will not change, the president inevitably reinforces the status quo.

Consider the two main promises Obama made. First, he said, to the millions covered by their employer plans, “Nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have.”

That sounds reassuring. But the reality is that the health care system is headed for crisis precisely because those employer-based plans are foundering. More and more are being canceled, and more of their costs are shifting to workers. They are a drag on the economy and a major factor in our loss of international competitiveness.

Obama knows we cannot keep what we have. This is why he is pushing to create insurance exchanges where families can buy their health coverage in competitive marketplaces that will help drive down costs.

But Obama does not tell people: “I want you to get used to the idea that eventually you may not get your coverage from your employer, and you will have to be a smart shopper, looking for the best deal you can get from competing insurance firms.”

The second big audience Obama addressed was Medicare retirees. Again, his message to this crucial constituency was: Nothing will change for you.

The reality is even more at odds with the rhetoric. Medicare is going broke. Health care costs are rising faster than the rate of inflation, and within years Medicare will add billions to the budget deficits. What is worse, Medicare is the main engine for subsidizing the most wasteful, inefficient system of health care payments in any advanced industrial country. It rewards practitioners and hospitals on the basis of the volume of procedures, not on the outcomes for patients. And because its reimbursement rates are below actual costs, they drive hospitals and doctors to do more and more – just to pay the bills.

Again, Obama knows better. He knows that unless he can fundamentally reform Medicare, he cannot achieve his goals. He knows he has to move it toward the models of the Mayo and Cleveland clinics and the few communities around the country where networks of doctors and hospitals have committed themselves to high-quality, low-cost medicine.

But he is not telling people that Medicare must change, so members of Congress will be reluctant to take the first steps in that direction.

I realize that what I am asking Obama to do is really hard. He has justifications for taking the easier path of reassurance. But his promise as president was to do the hard things, the big things. I wish he would try

I don’t know about anyone else but I believe the government is more likely to lead sheep to slaughter than I am to take myself to slaughter. Some of the people who come here obviously have not read Animal Farm or 1984 or even the Lord of The Flies. If anyone wants to let government run their lives just look at the welfare state we have now. The government giveth and the government taketh away. If you depend on government to make all your decisions about where you can live, where you can see a doctor, how much food you can buy each month with your food stamps, then have a ball….But, I am not going to let that happen to me.

Did you hear the piece on the latest minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment that is available? They cannot get it in Canada because their national health plan does not allow it. I don’t know how much more evidence you people need to hear before you will stop being dazzled by a man who has never even tried to buy health coverage because he has been on the dole most of his life himself. What does he know about health insurance or health care? He just listens to his rich white radical limosine liberals for advice with no practical experience to back up his rhetoric. It is a shame that so many people believe this charlatan. I know more about it than he does and I am just a poor minimum wage worker.

No one makes a DECISION to suicide. Suicide caused by severe depression, which is an illness. It’s not a choice. No person would ever CHOOSE to die or leave a wife or small children. Suicide is not about choice or decision. I would suggest that you educate yourself on this topic before making statements that are offensive to suicide survivors.

Obama just wants to follow through on his campaign promises – which included a national health care plan. He didn’t lie, did he? He was elected by a good majority, and that’s what they expect from him. It’s obvious to all “thinking” Americans that the Republicans are nothing but obstructionists working for their special interests – the insurance companies. Without them, most of the Senators who are against healthcare reform couldn’t hope to hold their seats.

SOUTH CAROLINA was taken by OBAMA!!! That’s why his opponent has raised over $1 million since Wilson’s outburst. Not only are they suffering with a Governor who needs to be impeached, now they have a Senator working against the way they voted!

The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department tells CBS-6 a motorcycle accident has closed a road in the town of Milton.

The crash happened between 11 and 11:30 at Adams and Rowland.

A dispatcher did not have any information on other vehicles involved.

We’re told two people were taken to the hospital, but there’s no word on any injuries.
