I think Palin has thrown down the gauntlet. She’s taken the battle to the enemy’s stronghold. Remember all the liberal pundits who said she should get out of AK and work in the Lower 48? Well, be careful what you wish for — you may get it!

But on reflection, no matter what the MSM was going to hammer her and especially if it looks as if she will run in 2012.

If she stayed on as Gov and started to run, they, the MSM, would slam her for not staying home doing her job. She leaves office to run and she will get slammed for leaving office to run for President.

I really just want to be the 2nd, on this saturday the 4th. Whether its a smart move or not, only time will tell but I’m 100% sure that Palin has no intentions of permanently leaving politics. The allure of holding an elected office is more addicting than cigarettes.
In other news, I’m going to go to work till 2 today, go to the grocery store and fireworks stand, come home and throw a brisket on the smoker, and then make a stiff one and hit the pool untill about 10 or so.
Wash, rinse, repeat…..

If she’s serious about politics she needs to rent an apt near Newt Gingrich and pick his brain for eight years… and during that time she better do some AMAZING things. I found Palin’s excuse for resigning (with a year left) lacking. She’s resigning for the taxpayers and her family. So, by that rationale… if she were VP right now… she would have stepped down? Would she have stepped down from ethical probes as VP to save the taxpayers money? No. Would she quit the job as VP because the media is saying “hurtful” things. No.

In other news…. Michael Jackson is still dead.

I think that Palin has made her plans perfectly clear. Too bad cynics can’t take her at her word. This speaks more to the company they’ve been keeping than anything else. The basketball metaphor works just fine. She doesn’t need to make the basket to score the point for her team.

The big fire works display around here is actually tomorrow night because it concludes a local area festival. We had no plans to go until last night when some friends talked us into playing in a golf tournament with them tomorrow evening that ends with a picnic and watching the fireworks show. Our heatwave has broken, so it should be a great way to end the holiday weekend.

She speaks from her heart, which drives those entrenched in the political machine in Washington (and Chicago) crazy! She could not, in good conscience, continue to collect a paycheck and attempt to do her job as Governor while spending 80% of her time defending unfounded allegations. I am not so naive to think that she could or would not become involved in illegal or unethical behavior, but I hope this announcement is truly what it looks like at face value. Any involvement in somethng other than true governing would be a blow, once again, to the concerned American involved in doing what’s right for our country, working mothers, and women. I don’t think this announcement means Governor Palin is out of politics – I think she’s got a plan to continue to serve the people of Alaskan, and our great country.

Since she was announced as a running mate, no candidate has been so brutally criticized as P alin, certainly not the current president, and not even Mr. Mc Cain. Why, if she is so incompetent, is she still front page news every day? She lost the vice presidency. Does anyone remember any other vice presidents who lost? She scares the daylights out of the left, and that’s why they won’t let go.

She’s proven her strength time and time again, if only by the mere fact that the press, and their followers, have done everything in their power to destroy her. And still she stands.

It is about time for the national media to wake up to the fact that they are constantly being lied to of having facts kept from them. These orchestrated news conferences are a sham!
It is also time for the media to stop their constant coverage of Michael Jackson’s death and start covering the important issues such as take overs of American businesses by the government and issues such as cap and tax which are being slipped through while the media is covering mundane things.
Maybe this is how politics are in Chicago, but this is bot the American way!

When I was on our local school board there were contentious contract negotiations for several years of my tenure. We were all attacked by the union hard liners in the newspapers. Our kids were harrassed at school by union operatives and their kids picked on our kids. Letters were written to union sympathizers on the board which disparaged those of us who were not union sympathizers. I could not go anywhere in town without being cornerner by one person or the other to be given opinions- even when at church! My point is that I can only imagine how Sarah feels.

I think Gov Palin’s announcement reflects that she is fed up with all the personal attacks but more importantly the way to speakout for candidates and causes without taking any taxpayer salary. It is a shame that Alaska has spent $2 million and she $500K over frivious charges. The answer to frivious claims is to make the looser pay the bill of the government and the defendent.

Wonderful comment, Mark. What they don’t seem to understand is that most who comprise “We the People” support her, if not in all things political, at least personally, and are sick of the slanderous nature of their coverage of her. Their efforts to discredit her are backfiring, I think.

I beleive the best of Sarah is yet to come….She and her family know it’s going to get ugly and I think her recent skirmishes with the SP’s are merely hardening her metle.

We need more stories about the GOOD our military does….not how many were killed…The loss of any life is tragic, but that needs to be balanced with the good things the military does.

The MSM hates the military as well as the progressives. Why would anyone want to see why the military is doing “good”? All they want to do is show the military “killing people in cold blood”, like John Murtha said back a year or so ago. Let’s not forget what John Kerry said during his campaign in 2004.

This 4th, having our VP in Iraq is great !! I like the idea of the powers at be to celebrate with our wonderful troops!

However, it looks as if Vice President Biden got his botox shots again. Is he really that vain? Getting old is just a natural progression of life, but VP Biden can’t even show facial expressions by lifting his eyebrows or showing age lines in his forehead. His facial muscles work fine below the brows…what gives here? Botox Biden? Comments?

Alisyn, you seem less ebullient than most Saturdays-holiday work got you down? How hard is it to deal with ratings pressures? Is it constant, like day to day? Do they look at long term trends, or start screaming at weekly dips, if any? You can’t always be thrilled with the content you have to present-are you at someone’s mercy or do you guys have some say? A great day in our history and a good time for reflection. I would challenge everyone here to read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution today. Recall where this nation has come from and take a good look at where we are headed. Then draw your own conclusions, not accept those of someone else, blindly. If it requires further study, challenge yourself.

As far as Sarah Palin’s political future is concerned, everyone has a nose as well. Time will tell. She is still young, at least by my standards. But no one, political or otherwise, deserves the treatment she has received from the MSM.

I don’t like the term “reverse discrimination”: discrimination is discrimination; people attach “reverse” to the odium when whites are the victims to suggest perhaps that discrimination in “that” direction is different than in others, but it is not. We must judge people by the content of their character not the color of their skin, and if the latter, it is discrimination regardless of that color. Th firefighter promotion opinion is the most troubling thing about Sotomayor.

I think everyone needs to think about buying a FORD, remember they did not fall into the trap of the “one” taking over the company. Well at least not yet. They had seen what was coming down the road, so to speak.

I drive a FORD F-150. I love it more and more every day now and appreicate FORD even more for their decisions.

From a family who has always supported GM, when it stood for General Motors, the next one we buy will be a Ford. No Government Motors for us.

Unfortunately, I suspect that Sarah Palin’s resignation is in fact because of a major scandal regarding her home in Alaska. The left-wing media is already all over it, if you do a google search you will see it all over the blogs. Regardless of whether there was any real ethics violation, the MSM will make enough hay with it to do serious damage to her image, just as they have done from the start of her VP campaign.

Olin, I believe they missed 90-95% of the time when they were campaigning. The only votes they returned for, I think, was the Bailout Bill. I am a firm believer in the idea that they should resign from Congress, like John Edwards did. It frees them up to say what they want and what they believe.

Politicians seem to forget that Sarah P is a business owner and a mother. A woman who had recently had a baby. Why stay there and be a target for more charges from the left and run up more legal bills that could send their business under? Have you seen anyone running to her rescue? Very few from the republican party. I would not put my family in a position where they are open target for a left wing media. Children are not to be targets even if they do go to a baseball game.

What if people had Twitter during the Revolution? There would be hundreds of blogs telling people why we shouldn’t go to war. The news would report it and the British would have been informed Ben Franklin would have to have an environmental impact study for his lightning experiment, and the printing press would have been replaced by blogs. Is technology really helping us?

Lighter fluid for charcoal briquettes!/? Ick! I use only real charcoal [no briquettes, which are merely pressed/amalgamated/glued blackened sawdust] and vegetable oil [sometimes with paper, generally with wood]. The petroleum-based lighter fluid never fully dissipates, and gets into the meat – briquettes and lighter fluid are a good way to ruin good meat.

Amen to the briquettes and lighter fluid. I don’t cook out that much anymore, but I have a good supply of pecan wood (gathered after recent hurricanes) stored and dried. I start a fire in the pit early, without benefit of excellerants, and let it burn down to coals for cooking. Briquettes last longer, but with indirect heat, you can add wood as required. Keep a pan of water in the pit to add moisture. I guess you could equate this method more to smoking than bbqing

Happy 4th of July Alisyn & to all!!! I am feeling extra sentimental & patriotic today & it’s because I fear for our nation & what the future holds. With the current Pres & administration it’s scary what lies ahead in the future for us, our children & grandchildren. God bless all who are in the trenches every day fighting for our country & the freedoms we were founded on.

I am so torn on what to think about Sarah Palin. I can’t blame her if she is Mama Bear protecting her cubs & wants to get out of the harsh limelight that has been put upon her since last August. But, selfishly I hoped she could continue to fight against the Left & run in 2012. I think this move to not finish out her Governor role will hurt her if those are her plans to run for Pres. in 2012. Then on the other hand it makes me angry because the Libs believe they have succeeded in pushing her out. I have read some comments (not too many cuz I get so angry at the nastiness) but Libs truly do believe they have succeeded.

I am so sorry MJ died. I feel sorry for his innocent kids They are getting thrown into the media & it will be relentless all the talk about them & the custody battle that is brewing. It would be great if one of MJ’s siblings stepped up & said they would care for them in place of their aging Mother. They know them & I think it would be better than Debbie Rowe, who I think is only seeing $$ signs. But, I am tired of all the coverage. I’ve never seen anything like it ever.

Good Morning, I am an avid Fox & Friends & Fox news fan. I depend on you to bring us unbiased news and all the news that we cannot get anywhere else unless we are listening to Rush, Glenn or Shawn on the radio. I would like to say that I am a little dissappointed in the Fox reporters for their “unbiased” coverage of the Sarah Palin situation. It sounded to me like they were attacking her themselves without even giving it any thought to what she was actually saying in her speach.

What I heard from the speach was that “The constant hits against her from the liberals were not only costing her, but it was costing her beloved state money & time that should have been used to help Alaska, not defend her decisions for bettering Alaska and her people.” She was assinated as a quitter, not as someone willing to step down and fight a fight without harming the people she promised to serve.

I will always watch to Fox for my total news because that is the only place we can ever hear what we need to know about our new administration and their plans for us the people who did not elect them!

There should actually be millions of people that get behind and stand behind Sarah Palin for doing what was right for her constituants and her state. For being able to speak from the heart instead of a teleprompter. You are only as good as your word and right now the word of our Government is worthless.

Liz – the Hawaii birth certificate is one issued at the health department when a mother comes in and says she had a baby and wants it recorded. We are looking for the official birth certificate filed by law by the hospital that reports the birth of a baby delivered and witnessed by hospital personnel. nobama’s certificate of live birth means nothing except that he was born.

I agree with cooldude. When it happened, I angrily posted here, but since I mentioned the name of the person who preferred to bloviate about his singing in the mirror to letting us hear the close of that marvelous rendition of the National Anthem, my post accordingly disappeared. I was in the infantry during ‘Nam – while Karl Rove was playing the draft dodge game of pretending going to college – which he dropped out of when his draft status got such that he would then not be drafted. Anybody who COULD avoided being drafted – whether Republican or democrat or hippie. I myself am a late Vietnam Vet (U.S. Navy 9 years). You pinpoint the Bush administration – have you checked the credentials of the nobama admin? Although enlistments are up it is rather amazing how many young men (and now women) would never, ever consider the military. My husband (U.S. Navy, Retired) was a recruiter in the 90’s and he was stopped making school visits! I am not pro-draft dodging but it was the times. The patriotism of WWII disappeared with the Make Love – Not War slogans and is almost completely wiped out of our culture with the rise of the me generation.

My draft number was 16 if I recall. I avoided the draft by enlisting. You might say that’s not avoiding the draft, but it did allow me to pick things that might keep me from combat. It ended up allowing me to take a high profile place in the Old Guard in DC.

It’s rather pointless to blame even Clinton who did even worse than just avoid the draft, with going with the times. I would like to think that by getting and keeping Bush in office he rather made up for his lack of military service by ending up serving the greater good.

Cap…..Cheney, Bush, Rove….all have very questionable military backgrounds. Cheney had “other important things to do” during the Vietnam War. That war was immoral anyway, and nobody supported our involvement there. I do feel bad for the vets that couldn’t get out of that one. That should have been a volunteer army.

Sarah was giving up politics with that speech….plain and simple. Governors don’t quit their jobs. They tough it out. She did a lot of questionable things while in office, so it’s not surprising that she was being investigated, but they found nothing…..so what is she running from? Makes you wonder, huh. That’s a trick question, chas, because you know the Framers never debated using the national taxing power to control individual conduct that is otherwise prohibited to the general government: that is an illicit use of the taxing power. Trying to replace facts with what shoulda happened, what woulda happened and other fantasies reveals an extremely naïve sense of the world. To make predictions on information that is not there is pure sophistry. It is like trying to prove a negative which even an attorney will find difficult to do.
Theory has to be based on historical evidence found in actual events that allow predictions. Whether we talk about global warming or finding bin Laden, people ignore tracable evidence and just make things up to fit their arguments. We like think that AlGore may have been more proficient at tracking down BL but there just is not evidence to say difinitively that he would have or that the polar ice caps are melting at an all time rate and even if they are who is to say definitively that it is not a temporary fact of how climate naturally functions.

The UN “experts” themselves admit that it isn’t fossil fuels that are the leading cause of CO2 emissions but rather cow flatulence. Aside from everyone becoming vegan, attempting to feed over 6 billion people on produce alone and having countless millions starve to death every time there’s a drought somewhere in the world, are we to deliberately cause the extinction of any entire species? Is that “good for the environment”. After all, just because we stop eating them doesn’t mean that they’ll just die off on their own. The oil in Alaska is so abundant that it’s seeping up out of the ground and polluting the rivers and streams. Is that “good for the environment and the wildlife”? If so, let’s tell Exxon that we want more incidents like the Valdez. Mother Nature is screaming GET THIS CRAP OUT OF ME!!! You guys just don’t understand. The 70 or so most world renown climatologist, (unlike those who believe in global warming and actually study climate not general temp changes), are wrong. They have their head in the sand.

The trees are dying of the extra CO2 and although all data shows the CO2 has NO relationship to temp, only a fool would deny that man can do in 100 years what nature didn’t do in 4 billion.

Hi, all. I could not visit today because I was the Statue of Liberty in a $th of July parade! It was fun. It was for the Marine Corps League parade entries.

The parade slowed down and a man was yelling my name- I turned and it was my Congressman, Kevin Brady, and his wife, watching the parade. I showed him my torch, told him I made it out of two paper plates and a giftwrap tube, and told him I used all my stimulus money to make it, and he and his wife cracked up. They are good people. We’ve known him a long time.

There was a huge contingent of tea party marchers in our parade.

Love Sarah, and think she is making a great move. She waited until she beat them on the ethics complaints, and now is free to go for higher office. GO SARAH!!

The one thing about being a desert dweller, as I am, is that having only sand around sometimes brings enlightenment instead of benightedness. Over 2008, the net temperature differential, as determined by an average of 4 highly sophisticated observational studies, was – 0.6405°C; none showed an elevation. Remember that in an earlier time, but not that long ago, and among some now, just as fancy Ph.D.s as supported global warming from the greenhouse effect [and many of Gore's list are changing their positions] support[ed] the notion that the CO2 and other pollutants are preventing some of the sun’s rays from entering the atmosphere at all, instead of allowing the ones that enter to be trapped, resulting in global cooling. One thing is clear from law: whatever scientific expert one can find to support proposition X can be countered by an equally competent expert proposing the opposite of X, and global warming [recently changed to "climate change" because warming is not clear!] is not an exception to that reality.

Obama’s mother had him when she was 17 an younger than Bristol Palin, Liz. By law I think she had to be 18 to confer citizenship on him. His grandmother said she was present at his birth- in KENYA. Until they shut her up.

I have reduced my piece to functional “duhs” and it still won’t come through, so I give up. And there are no series of letters which could cause alarm that I am trying to sneak salaciousness past. I give up; let Liz remain unrebuffed, as far as I am concerned – the truth is clear to me.

No, situs of birth. In California we are plagued with people quickly and illegally sneaking across the border to drop their babies here, which makes them citizens, notwithstanding their obvious allegiance wlsewhere, complicating the medical and social welfare and INS issues, and there has been no successful litigation that the ancestry of their parents or the temporary nature of their mothers’ presence undermines the 14th Amendment pronouncement regarding birth here.

Global warming is figment of some idiots imagination. Our weather cycles, and has for eons- ice age, drought in early 1800’s that lasted for years? And here’s something to think about. The sun effects our weather. Do you think it’s warming up, or cooling down. Nothing burns forever. And what about the revolution and rotation of our earth? Do you think it could be slowing up , speeding up, or tilting more on it’s axis? What could change that? Meteors, a weight imbalance? Even nuclear testing. Even minute changes over time will have an impact.

Last November, more than 60 percent of voters on the San Francisco Peninsula supported a $9.9 billion bond measure to help pay for a high-speed rail line between San Francisco and the Los Angeles area.

As planning accelerates, some of the area’s residents are raising concerns about the project. They fear it could take out trees, homes and businesses and split their communities with elevated trains flashing between San Francisco and San Jose.

The objections raise the prospect that the bullet train line may not reach San Francisco, one of its key destinations.

I have yet to hear anyone comment that Gov Palin is doing the honorable thing by stepping down as Alaska Gov. How could she give Alaska the time it needs and still do the political work she seems to be headed for. She could not do two full time jobs at the same time. I know others have done it but they have short changed someone in the process. This action would have been consideered normal some years back before everybody got the idea they could do anything anytime.

I agree 100%, Liz. I was a reluctant McCain supporter to begin with. He was unfortunately the candidate of my party, and the one with less obvious disaster for our country written all over him, but I was encouraged when he chose Mrs. Palin as his running partner. What he did, and what he has allowed to happen to her at the hands of his own staff is appalling. She literally pulled his campaign out of the dregs, and this is how he repaid her. I rarely support the Dems on any issue, but you gotta give them credit for trying to pay back the ones who helped them up the ladder.

A Florida couple killed in their home had an extensive surveillance system in the house that recorded three apparently experienced criminals swiftly slip into the house before driving off in a red van, police said.

Several tips from the public led investigators to a red, 15-passenger van Saturday morning that they believe was used as the getaway vehicle by the three men, believed to be in their “late teens on up,” Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said. Authorities were questioning two people linked to the van, but no arrests have been made.

Byrd and Melanie Billings of Beulah, a rural area west of Pensacola near the Alabama state line, were found shot dead in their home Thursday evening. The couple, known for their large family of adopted children, had an extensive surveillance system in the house and Morgan said authorities have reviewed the tapes repeatedly. The couple was killed as the children slept.

South Korean police are analyzing a sample of the tens of thousands of infected computers used to crash Web sites in South Korea and the U.S., but conceded Sunday they may not lead to the culprit.

South Korean intelligence officials suspect archrival North Korea was involved. South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers last week that a North Korean military research institute had been ordered to destroy the South’s communications networks, local media reported.

In a statement late Saturday, the National Intelligence Service said it has “various evidence” of North Korean involvement, but cautioned it has yet to reach a final conclusion.

Thunderstorms once again forced NASA to call off the launch of space shuttle Endeavour on Monday, the fifth delay for the space station construction mission.

NASA said it would try again early Wednesday evening, after taking a one-day break.

In a scene nearly identical to Sunday, launch managers halted the countdown just minutes before Endeavour and seven astronauts were supposed to blast off in the early evening.

This time, storms packed with lightning popped up on opposite sides of the launching site, one after the other, close enough to violate NASA’s safety rules.

Joy, when did you become Joy? When were you you? At what point would it be ok to not allow Joy to exist to have the choice to type this? There is no way to know whether or not a baby will be brought up in a good or a bad home. Some might make the argument since the President was born into a bad family situation to an unwed teenaged mom it would have been “better” had he never been allowed to live. After all, the decision as to when he became a human being is, according to him, “above his pay grade.” I disagree with that “choice”.

I just can’t look at a teeny baby in utero and decide it isn’t a teeny baby. Its little heat beats, if has little arms and legs, some pictures I have seen show it even sucking its little thumb. Therefore, I can’t consider it right to kill it. The most active people who are prolife do tons of things to help girls to cope with an “unwanted” pregnancy, for example, the Pregnancy Assistance Center, and do so not for financial reward, making the millions off only the pro-death “choice” as Planned Parenthood does, but because of values. Millions of prospective adoptive couples want an “unwanted” baby.

I think you had the right to the choice to live from the beginning.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s unemployment rate soared to 15.2 percent in June, the state’s highest monthly rate since the spring of 1983.

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate in May was 14.1 percent, already the highest in the nation. The national jobless rate in June was 9.5 percent.

The struggling state has had the nation’s highest unemployment rate for much of the past few years, but it continues to climb as jobs are lost in the restructuring auto industry and other employment areas. Michigan’s jobless rate was 8.1 percent in June 2008.

Michigan counted 740,000 unemployed people this June. That’s the highest monthly total since the state’s current official series of unemployment data began in 1976.

Economists project Michigan’s unemployment rate generally will rise in the second half of this year and into 2010. The University of Michigan estimates state unemployment will average 15.8 percent next year.

The tough market has left job seekers flooding the relatively few businesses that are hiring with applications.

FireKeepers Casino, scheduled to open in early August in Calhoun County near Battle Creek, has received 30,000 applications for its 1,500 jobs. That’s about 20 applicants for each available job at the casino owned by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians.

“It’s more than we expected,” said Peggy Houston, the casino’s human resources director.

Many applicants have come from within a 60-mile radius of the casino and from a variety of different job backgrounds, Houston said.

It’s not uncommon for Gordon Food Service Inc., a food service supplier based in Grand Rapids, to receive more than 100 applications within a month for a single sales job.

“It varies, but application volume has doubled if not tripled for some positions,” said Misty Sanchez, a Gordon Food Service recruiter based in Brighton.

Michigan’s latest monthly jobless rate is its highest since reaching 15.3 percent in May 1983.

About 19,000 jobs were lost last month in manufacturing, a fallout of problems that include the bankruptcies of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC.

About 10,000 jobs were lost in professional and business services. Another 5,000 jobs were lost in construction.

Michigan gained about 5,000 government jobs in June.

Bruce; We are remodeling contractors and normally do quite well in a recession. Pretty good spring but we are hearing crickets now. We typically pick up in the fall but….Michigan is really in a bad way.

Hi Carolyn, I’ve said it before the people have to buy American the only way to make jobs here. I don’t know about you but my windows, kitchen and bath cabinets, plumbing fixtures, drywall, wood, etc.etc all American. I got so mad Sunday because I had an emergency plumbing job so I went to Lowes and could’nt find a valve made in America even though the valves name was American valve co, sticker said made in China. I actually drove 62 miles round trip to find a valve made in America and I did.
My brother-in-law works for a local steel co. and bougrt his wife a honda in Jan. he got laid off in May. I told him don’t cry to me I just don’t want to hear it.

Yep…our good friends own a Shell Oil franchise and are really struggling. Lines of credit closed, business down. The wife bought a Toyota about 5 years ago and I just rolled my eyes. She is flaming lib and holds to her beliefs despite the line of business they are in. Drives me nuts.

NASA could put a man on the moon but didn’t have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission.

In an embarrassing acknowledgment, the space agency said Thursday that it must have erased the Apollo 11 moon footage years ago so that it could reuse the videotape.

But now Hollywood is coming to the rescue.

The studio wizards who restored “Casablanca” are digitally sharpening and cleaning up the ghostly, grainy footage of the moon landing, making it even better than what TV viewers saw on July 20, 1969. They are doing it by working from four copies that NASA scrounged from around the world.

There is so many people out there that have never had to sacrifice their time,
so they dont understand hard work…. I mean 10-12 hours a day…every day,
and we have a president that wants to tax us even more….
I cant work any more then I do….if we are at 58-60% taxes..we have to cut back on employees,
thats the bottom line,
The president is going after the people that create jobs, that 5% he is talking about.
That 5%… are the people that create jobs for the middle class,
so if they have to cut back…that will hurt the economy even more..there is about 21.5 million small business out there…if every small business cuts 5 jobs..thats about 100 million people out of work…think about that…talk about problems, and with all this out of control spending,
you know where we are heading….
we will go Bankrupt if you spend more then you have coming in,
thats commom sense.

It was a reunion of reunions.

Twelve Apollo astronauts reminisced, traded stories and poked fun at each other Friday night as the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing and moonwalk approached.

The astronauts, including first moonmen Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, attended the ceremony in which the National Aviation Hall of Fame presented the Apollo crews with the “Spirit of Flight” award for their courage and dedication.

The crowd of hundreds at the National Museum of the United States Air Force erupted in cheers when a video chronicling the space program replayed Armstrong’s famous first words after stepping on the moon July 20, 1969: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

New NASA photos of the moon show the leftovers from man’s exploration 40 years ago. For the first time, photos from space pinpoint equipment left behind from Apollo landings, and even the well-worn tracks made by astronauts on the moon surface. The images are from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which was launched last month and now circles the moon in search of future landing sites.

The photos were released Friday, in time for the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing on July 20, 1969. A picture of the Apollo 11 site shows the Eagle lunar module used by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Verizon Wireless is offering small cellular carriers a chance to get new phone models faster.

Like other large carriers, Verizon Wireless sometimes exclusively locks up new models for six months to a year. On Friday, it said it would let small carriers, those with less than 500,000 subscribers, get the phones in six months or less.

The carriers that could take advantage of the offer are mainly rural.
