Sunday Morning

Hi Guys,

What should happen to Michael Jackson’s doctor?  We have some pressing questions:  why was he giving Michael CPR on the bed instead of the floor?  Why didn’t he administer an antidote after realizing the shot of Demerol appeared to be suppressing Jackson’s respiratory system to a dangerous level?

Anybody shopping for a husband out there?  We have a consumer reporter on to tell you how and where to find a good one.  But I’d love to hear your tips too.

How did a 14-year-old boy in South Carolina grow to 555 pounds?  How did his mother let him become so morbidly obese?  What should authorities do with the Mom?

Here’s an age old question:  is it safe to have a glass of wine while breastfeeding?  How bout two?  One mother has been arrested for DUB:  Drinking while breastfeeding.  Where’s the line?

Whether you loved Michael Jackson or not, you can’t help but mourn the talent that was lost, the end of a tormented but genious man and the loss of a father to their children. While I was never a “fan” I was an admirer of the skill this man was blessed with. I pity the loss of his childhood and normalcy. May God bless him and his children.

If there was viable malpractice in or around the time of death, then perhaps the physician should bear some accountability. But as for the rest of it, only Jackson is to blame for where he ended up. Its really no different for me, I may not remember going to bed last night……..but I sure remember that first highball in the pool around 5:30 yesterday.

I am very ashamed to admit I thought Michael Jackson was being dramatic with another illness to take focus off Cap and Trade for Obama.

This shows how untrusting I am for the administration that is in office. I have lost my mind from anger.

I am saddened for MJ’s family and true friends and fans. I am sorry for my throughts.

The most disgusting thing about the Jackson affair for me is this verbal diarrhea from this Oxman character, who claims to be an attorney both for Michael and for the family, about Jackson’s problems, about what he told him and them about it, and about what he told them he would broadcast to the world if they did not do certain things about the problem! Are you kidding me???/! Attorneys are supposed to protect their clients confidences and secrets at all costs; it is more than merely not revealing attorney-client communications, but is a duty to protect [and obviously not exploit!] all confidences, secrets, advice, thoughts about your client, etc. This man has undermined a sacred and essential component of attorneys’ duties and he should be shunned and drummed out of the profession!

OMG see I aksed yesterday about those kids!!! WHY if everyone knew about his drug problems was NO ONE doing something about getting those kids out of that house!! It was going to be hard enough to be a jackson kid now he seen his dad die of DRUGS

If I was on drugs my kids would have been takin away in a heartbeat but MJ’s kids were with him till drugs stopped his heart!!! THATS THE STORY IN THIS !! Kids who are in drug addict’s care!!!

Husbands—well, I traded up and am blissfully happy. Have a friendly relationship with my ex and my son is so much better off because we choose and are able to get along.

MJ’s doc—Gotta see what the toxicology reports say—the results will probably not surprise me—if this guy is a cardiologist, God help us, cuz if I recall correctly, it was reported he was doing CPR on the bed—Highly ineffectual–just sayin’ ya know!!

And now the kid, and the mom chged with neglect over her over weight child. Where were they, in that case, when he weighed a few pounds less? I checked on the Cable News Ratings list this morning and CNN had a huge surge in ratings. The country is more interested in the news that deals with other things besides politics. I guess most people have decided it isn’t worth knowing what our government is doing to the country. Those people will wake up one day and ask what happened to our freedom. One is certainly afraid that is the case, but then I come here, and I listen to my kids, and then I am persuaded perhaps that isn’t the case at all. Citizens were persuaded by this very artful man, and the money behind him is pretty huge, but all that said, I am encouraged to believe that things will “change” in 2010, when we get to vote again. Hopefully, as said b/4, those who did not vote before, will come out and vote this time. A foolish mentality, I think, to decide to “boycott” the election!!!!! And those that were persuaded, will decide this isn’t the “change” they had in mind either. lol :)

Hi, chas, me. Been on the run a lot, some on cases some on family – the latter more important.

I am troubled about this obese kid that, but I am never excited about bloating [pardon metaphor] the intrusiveness of CPS by giving them this sort of duty. I do not buy the mom’s lame rationalization. I recall noting one of my boys getting a bit fleshy many, many years ago, I wagged my finger and raised my voice [the only discipline I have ever needed], and proclaimed that such was to stop, then and there, and no one would like it if I had to get further involved in the subject. It did, and he became a toned karate black belt, and conscientious about his eating. You merely need to be a parent, not ask for government invasiveness. The mom needs parental training; the kid does not need governmental stewardship.

I suggest jail is not the solution for the over weight boy’s mom. That’s a bit extreme, as a remedy. Perhaps a helpful hand, would be a better solution. Of course, I think it is undue interference to suggest that she should be chged with anything, and put in jail.

I hope you are right. When c-span was airing the Cap and Trade (little 3 hour debate), my whole neighborhood (who was home at the time) was outside. I doubt very much they even realized they were going to vote that night. I wonder how many actually knew there was even a Cap and Trade bill at all.

Liz K. it is good to hear your from Kansas. I graduated from Pittsburg State University when I was 49. Worked for Labette Co. SRS until age 55 as child abuse investigator. If it was not for my grandson I would move back to Kansas. I think at least in my corner it was a good place to live.

Has anyone thought of this idea concerning MJ—I did—. First he had a interest in all that have passed @ a early age from drugs who were famous, That he would die @ a early age & that it could happen to him, He was heavily in debt, His name has been through the mud, losing every thing he ever had,had that new tour coming up & obviously he was in terrible health & probably couldn’t do the concerts in the condition he was in. So what if this was his way of going out? His family would have money again, and his name would be in all the news&headlines again,he would immortalized for ever now & be on the list he was so interested in. So was this accident or his finale way of being on the top again?

If he did, he is wrong, particularly for California attorneys. We have a duty regarding communications, and separately regarding secrets and confidences. Remember that the character here claims to be the attorney both for Michael and for the family, so he can’t reveal stuff about either!

Women have to work to provide for the family and have to have other people watching their children or they have to leave them alone to fend for themselves. Mothers can not be with their children every minute.

If government is going to have control of our children, then they need to pay mothers to stay home and take care of them. The whole thing is out of control on all sides.

I have worked with enough bad doctors over the years to know that this physician will be protected by many in health care. They protect and cover up for each other. Even if a physician is negligent they will cover because the next problem may be their own. Medicine is not always the precise science people would like to think it is.
There is no way a good physician could over look the form of drug abuse that is being set forth about Michael Jackson. Of course no one outside the room he died in really knows what happened that day. But long term unregulated drug use is something that doctor is responsible for. He lived with the man and was aware of what he was doing. He should never be able to “practice” medicine again. However, I doubt anything will ever be done to the man.

Obese Kid

I have been big all my life. When I graduated from High School I was well over 400lbs. My weight was not the fault of my parents, it was my choice not just to eat what I liked but how much I wanted. If I had only eaten what we had at home I would not have been as big as I was. But it is so easy for a kid to stop at fast food places or the corner Quicky Mart and pick up the great tasting junk food that is targeted towards them. Also our modern lifestyle does not give us very much time to eat, so as soon as we enter school we are programmed to stuff our faces as fast as we can or go hungry. The schools I went to we had between 20 and 30 minutes to eat. By the time it took to get to the cafeteria, get in line and make it thru to pick up your food, and then find a seat you only had 5 to 10 minutes to eat. After 12 years of this it is a habit that is hard to break and so you carry it over into your adult life. I can not see how the parents can be held accountable. Yes, parents have to try and instill good choices in kids but in the end he is old enough to make the choices he does.

It is no different than watching the news and seeing decent parents who tried to raise there kids with the knowledge of right and wrong sitting in a court room as there child (teen or young adult usually) has just been found guilty of a major crime. You guys mentioned that the young mans life expectancy is maybe 40 if he’s lucky but a lot of kids now days don’t even make it too half that.

If the government wants to intervene with this child’s situation then they are going to set a precedent of needing to intervene with every situation that is similar. Obesity in America is at an Epidemic rate and the government will be extremely busy. I don’t know what the right answer for this child is, I feel sorry for him… I think his mother is just trying to get by just like many Americans. The Government needs to Educate people on what they are eating and Eliminate company’s from using the products that are causing obesity. Just a thought.

Good morning all. It is nice to see everyone.

It seems to me that “Obelieve what I say” thinks that everyone in America is no smarter than a 2 year old and that he is the only one capable of making any decisions and he is the only one who can run the government, the financial industry, the manufacturing (e.g. car companies) as well as how we raise our children and our health care.

As for MJ I am so tired of hearing about him that I am ready to throw the TV out. Can we quit rehashing every little detail and only report if there is something new to say?

John and Kate, please, they don’t need the show anymore, they have everything given to them anyway. Perhaps the best thing for those kids would be to live a non-public life with parents who work to support and take care of them, real reality! They won’t need the nannies anyway as all the kids will be in school all day, where by the way the teachers ten to anywhere from 20-30 kids the same age all day every day. God Bless the teachers!

And yes, the parents of that morbidly obese boy are endangering his life by not getting treatment for him, and I find it hard to believe in this day and age where almost every single mom I know gets AFDC and Medicaid, I can’t buy the excuse that she could not afford to get him treated. And there are other ways to feed your family besides fast food if you don’t cook. There are all kinds of good foods that kids like that they can heat in the microwave if Mom isn’t home.

Children Services doesn’t save anyone, usually, but can cause havoc in the process of their “intervention”…cults are not the same as the Amish community, which is open, and active in the community, and their citizens are allowed to leave, if they wish. I don’t have to be nailed the t.v., to understand whatsup, so I might choose to enjoy a beautiful day, and put it all aside for a few hrs., so I would not assume a person doesn’t know what is going on, if the were out enjoying themselves. We are abt to find out tho, as 2010 is approaching very very very fast, and we will see if anyone except US, of course, is paying attn, hum???? :)

I was wondering and I am glad you cleared that up, because I thought it was so wrong for the lawyer to run his mouth to Fox about Jackson. It was just wrong. I thought at the time, the Judge was also wrong when he said that. However I am not a lawyer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Good for the two of you. I was also fortunate to be able to stay home and raise my two girls. Now the government wants more and more from average citizens. Either we have to do without any luxurys at all or work ourselves to the bone.

James inquires if the blabbermouth attorney can be charged. He can have complaints filed against him in the State Bar, and that is underway. But it is important to all reading this and hearing him that Oxman’s perfidies are grotesquely atypical – people can still trust their confidences to their attorneys, which is necessary to attorneys’ efforts to help and protect those clients, and there is no “he’s dead, I can gush now” exception to that rule.

Me, it is sad but true. Not all abuse is turned in. In addition there are judges, lawyers, and child abuse investigators that are not worth what they eat. Like the judge that gave an admitted offender less than a year for raping a four year old child in McAlester. Over all I think most investigators do what they

Hope I am able to post today….. I’ll change our Governor in a second. He is USELESS….. Let Michael rest in peace…. I was never a fan but do feel for his children. As for husbands …… I married mine almost 42 years ago. Had some wonderful times and at times I wanted to trade him in.
Am happy to say that I wouldn’t trade him in for anyone else. He still works (40 hr week) after having retired from the NYPD. He goes grocery shopping , he helps clean the house, does yard work, helps with the grandsons and takes care of my mom. And Gini he buys donuts and cookies too . LOL

Regarding the young morbidly-obese teen: he is probably experiencing Metabolic Syndrome, a complex blending of alterations in carbohydrate intolerance (pre-diabetes), self-care skill deficits related to understanding of nutrition, exercise, and CORRECT management of his insatiable hunger (all part of the syndrome). His mom is only part of the formula in his safety. Health care providers need to intervene with the use of a safe and inexpensive drug, metformine. I can tell you, that mom is overwhelmed. I see it on a daily basis in my practice. Use your program to find resources for this family unit….please don’t give him anymore personal grief than he experiences on a day-to-day basis.

Bruce :) :) :) The “stuff” isn’t very important after all, is it. Children, on the other hand, are just a huge gift, and I agree with you for sure. We were fortunate and I did not work, as the “stuff” was just never that important at all…and in the end, it just GETS IN THE WAY, for sure!!!!! ~~laughing~~ ha!! work outside the home, that is. All I did was work, as this was a 24/7, job. I celebrate the working mom, however, as she is the absolute ultimate organizer, able to get it all done, and also enjoy a career. I do believe the bottom line, is a loving environment for the children, and that is the priority anyone would have, who is a responsible person, and I have seen that happen over and over again, with the women I know, who work, and maintain a household with children. lol

just a quick comment on stay at home moms. My wife was able to stay home with our three children, who are grown with their own children, and by the way, their wifes stay home now as well.
The difference I believe in why a lot, not all, but a lot of women work after child birth is because of the “need” for certain things, like cell phones, wide screen tvs, cable, lap tops, PDA’s, and all the other necessities of life, that by the way, we didn’t have when we had children. No WII’s, lap tops, cell phones, or anything like that.

My God, I am just glad to be alive today based on all these new discoveries. In the “old” days, no car seats, ate stuff that we didn’t know about, parents who drank and smoked while they were pregnant and breast feeding.
Anyone over 60 is a miracle in my mind, because we shouldn’t be here. Not to mention what we did in the 60’s which in itself is another story.

I see obese children being brought to the doctors office daily. I am talking about kids even as babies way over weight and every age on up. Fast food and junk food are every where. Working parents tend to do the fast food thing way to often and processed foods are the next fast producer of fat in kids. Many parents come to the office with food in hand to give to the kids to keep them quiet. Parenting skills are at an all time low.
Sadly we see abused and neglected kids that social services should be taking care of and do not. Nurses are required to report these cases but many do not anymore because without the physician reporting the case is often dropped. Many physicians do not want to take the time off to testify in these cases. So abuse and neglect go on and on.
An obese kid is at risk. It is sad his mom does not monitor his food intake. I realize she is in the same boat as many working parents but there are things she could do to stop this problem. Social services is not able to take care of the abuse and neglect cases as it is. This mother needs to be responsible and do what needs to be done for her son.
Obesity is an epidemic in this country. I am not talking about someone 50 or 100 pounds over weight. It has now far exceeded that. Many people are coming in that we cannot weigh on normal scales that go up to 300 or 500 pounds. Poor diet and inactivity are the major causes. By the way many times your tax dollar has been paying for this. Someone wake up!

Red dye, asbestos, sunshine, all over the WORLD w/no seatbelt YIKES!, a beer here and there, as well as a glass of wine, and other delish drinks along the way…of course, the Inspector General always thought it was pretty ridiculous one zoomed down the highway, with nothing to hold you in, if one lost control of said vehicle. As a pilot, he ALWAYS was required to wear a seat belt after all, and unlikely to have a head on up thar in the blue, hum??? :)

If Michael collapsed as is being reported who put him on the bed and why would the doctor perform CPR there and not on the floor? Was Michael already on the bed? Did he go to lay down after receiving the reported Demerol shot? Is it that he never regained conscience and the Doctor found him in full cardiac arrest and everything unfolded as we know it to be? Why was a cardiologist treating Michael for a chronic pain condition? Does the Doctor have enough with respect to Michael’s medical history, tests etc to warrant authorizing and administering Demerol? Did the doctor control the administering of the other prescribed meds Michael was taking? Or was Michael allowed to take them on his own accord? Was it the Doctor’s sole responsibility to administer only the Demerol injections? If it was a common practice for Michael to take the prescribed meds in conjunction with one another was there visible signs of impairment that went unnoticed by this doctor? What about lack thereof of Narcon the medicine to interrupt and reverse the effects of a drug overdose. There are many questions that need to be answered in this unfortunate death. Thank you

I just e-mailed about the young man with obesithy. I also want to bring another point to focus. I see blatent abuse of children on a regular basis as I drive around my community. Why are we not prosecuting parents with children inside an enclosed car…. smoking. We would come unglued if we saw a parent with a plastic bag over a child’s head. Well, replace that bag with an environment filled with toxic gases. That is behavior these parents are DIRECTLY capable of avoiding…not to mention the role-modeling opportunities missed.

I never thought however, they meant I was supposed to have so many, I couldn’t actually FIND MY BREAST!!!! hum??? ~~laughing and laughing~~ oh my my my. I have caught ME syndrome today, apparently. So so so silly. lol :) We also survived lead paint, as I NEVER was told I should actually EAT paint chips??? Mom did keep the house spotless, after all. :)

Way back when I was breastfeeding my babies, my doctor recommended a small glass of wine about 30 minutes before feeding to help with relaxation and milk let-down. It seems to have been O.K. My kids were healthy and none are alcoholic that I know of.

On the energy bill.
Average people know instinctively that the energy bill is going to cost us a bundle of money and in the end will not fix anything. The powers to be in Washington will not let us (US) do the reasonable and start using the resources we have on out continent. We have gas, oil, geothermal etc. We need to use all of it. If government would let free enterprize loose to develope these resources unfettered(sp) we could turn our economy around in months not years and our economy would become again what the world at large envies.
Our government is out of control. I believe that if we don’t see Washington start listening to the people whom they serve, then we will start saying good-by and bring in public servants who will serve the public. It can’t happen soon enough.

I see that Sal! Boo hoo…but the Comfest went well, and the girl sang beautifully, so at least yesterday was nice. Did have the event of disruption during their show. A bunch of wannabee hippies decided to march across the front of the stage during the show, with their signs and coffins. It was abt to turn really ugly, what with MAMA sitting in the FRONT ROW!!!!! ~~laughing~~ YIKES! Thankfully, the oldest daughter whispered “sweet nothings” in the ear of them thar folks, and they evacuated immediately. Hummm..wonder what that kiddo said??? YIKES!!! I was saved having to punch them in the nose…a close call!!! grrrrr, again! lol The audacity of it all, was beyond the pale, whether one might have agreed with them or not. :)

As Cookie Czar, I accept the challenge Merle, and will contact Sal, in the Dept of Kitchens, and get him started on those cookies immediately. I think Congressmen nd Senators should be required to PASS A TEST on the content of any bill they are considering before they are allowed to vote on it, proving they know what is in it. I bet we would get far better government that way, and these 1200 page dumps of bills nobody has read that have copious pork and unintended consequences would be things of the past. The rest of us have to prove we know what we are doing; why don’t We the People REQUIRE our representatives to do the same? I’m tired of them playing Russian roulette with our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor unlike our forefathers who put THEIRS on the line for us.

I think congressmen and senators should be required to pass a TEST to prove they are literate! There are currently no higher education requirements for them and that’s a shame. I think they should ALL have a minimum of a law degree….after all, they are passing laws.

A new poll out today says only 21% of voters now consider themselves Republicans….a 25-year low!

TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa police say Billy Mays, the television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50.

Authorities say Mays was pronounced dead Sunday morning after being found by his wife at home. There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play. The coroner’s office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

He was amazing, and we do have some of the products he sold. A huge shock, and so young yet. lol :) An interesting life, I agree, and much more worthy of our consideration than MJ, on any day. I suspect there will be no celebration of his successes, as it’s not as juicy as MJ, and so it goes. One wouldn’t want to inspire, after all, when one can talk endlessly abt a man that failed at life, miserably, after being handed everything. lol :)

Fox doesn’t represent both sides. They have guests from the left but they won’t let them talk usually. Although I give O’Reilly credit for hearing out Barney Frank in the latest interview…that’s probably because Frank wouldn’t go on the show again if Bill wouldn’t let him talk, like he usually does with guests from the “other” side! Hannity is much worse than O’Reilly though and I think they are running out of guests who don’t want to be trashed on their shows without a chance to defend themselves.

Dianne, I must admit the past couple of days I’ve been watching more CNN than Fox because Fox was so focused on MJ that I needed a break. Then last night at bed, fox was running reruns, so I switched to CNN for some news. I’m so MJ overdosed that I’m about ready to scream when I hear the music.

It might be just me, but it seems like Fox is showing more newsish personality shows lately than plain news shows. I watch the news all the time.

You seem to do a lot of stereotyping and selecting of facts to suit your agenda rather than genuinely trying to learn something from the comments you have made here. And I’m curious- since you eschew just throwing out “talking points”, I’m wondering why you avoid answering the specific questions I have asked you, like what Keynsian economics actually means, how the principles of Keynsian economics broke down during the Carter administration and how you think it relates to the economy of China? You seem to know about terms but not actually what they mean.

As for needing all legislators to be lawyers and have a higher education, I think you must not be familiar with the term “educated idiot”. Did you know the man with the highest IQ in the world, at about 200, never went to college? There is an interesting video about him on youtube.

Some of the most intelligent people I know never went to college. When you get older and more mature you will discover this fact for yourself. Or, maybe not. The world is full of terminally educated idiots, after all. Are you still in college now?

He was exploring black culture with the Rev. Wright, but he didn’t agree with him on lots of things. However, I must say the Rev. Wright doesn’t scare me half as much as Sarah Palin’s witchhunting pastor….now that’s some really weird stuff!

Sarah doesn’t seem to have strong religious views, although she seems to have strong opinions. How those opinions were formed is anyone’s guess. The pastor says he sees her in church about a half dozen times a year. She was baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church and later joined a Penecostal church.

I have had it with this “writing a paper” dog and pony show. I think it is a disgrace to represent onself as a person who wants to share ideas and have an exchange of points of view when in fact one is baiting and insulting just to get reactions from others for the purposes of writing a term paper or as some other sort of experiment in which we will be portrayed as “right-wing, wing nuts. Mac, sorry I had to leave for a while. I’m writing an article about the “new” Republican party. I’ve been reading all the Fox News blogs and some at MSNBC. There’s a huge difference. The Fox blogs are full of people who are pretty hateful and mad at the world, and they want to blame Obama more than anyone for what’s wrong with their lives. That’s pretty much the conclusion I’ve come to. I won’t use any personal info. in my article — just some “excerpts” from some of the weirdest posts, and some from the “normal” ones.

MSNBC has more “moderate” views and I assume the people are more educated overall on those blogs (although I don’t know that for a fact). They are not so full of “talking points” and much more thoughtful. I hope that answers your question. You don’t have to be suspicious of me. You have been one of the nicer ones here. Namaste.

Pretty much since I started posting here some of the posters have promoted ignoring me and they labeled me a “troll” , a “libturd” and a “whacko”. Those are just some of the names I’ve been called for some of my “not so conservative” views. They want to keep this blog strictly for Obama-haters, and they call him worse names than they call me. This is pretty much a far-far-right blog and when liberals wander over here, they begin attacking them almost immediately. Most go away pretty quick, but I stuck around to see if I could get to the core of what makes them think the way they do. I think I’ve made a lot of progress here….at least for my paper. Ok, Liz, you posted a link to an article about China, but you don’t seem to be able to answer my questions in your own words. This usually tells me a person really doesn’t know, off the top of her head, what the term she is using really means. You didn’t address (1.) what Keynsian economics is, (2.) How the theory was discredited during the Carter administration or how it applies to China, a completely different system from our own, and how since China loosened central control its economy actually grew. From your article, it appears there is a problem with the policies being implemented and the economy in China is suffering and these policies are not proven to have helped yet. Guess what, they won’t- socialism and increased government interference in the market never does. That HAS been proven, many times, in many places.

As for the article, how can you make a blanket judgement about “attitudes and beliefs” of the “new Republicans” and to what do you attribute your assertion that the Republican party is made up of totally different Americans than it was four years ago? How do you know, and certainly how would you know from reading and posting on a blog? I would venture to say there are a variety of people of different parties represented here, and many people who identify themselves as conservative do not identify themselves necessarily as “Republican”. What publication is the article for, or is it a school project? I think you are doing an awful lot of stereotyping.

Those LTD’S, and the smart and informed, hopefully will continue to come, with their excellent opinions of the “news of the day”. I must think there are those who wish to close this blog down. I object also!!! “They” are certainly getting more attn than one would think should be given. The mood of the nation is edgy, to say the least as one feels their freedoms threatened. The person tells The Associated Press they will face federal charges over the next few months. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Retro, I tried to post a link about the Chinese stimulus but this blog filters it out I guess. Anyway, it seems to be working beautifully because I bought some Chinese stocks back in March at dirt cheap prices and they are now up huge, and one is up 400%. The US economy is recovering faster than anyone thought it would a few months ago. Hopefully our stimulus works as well as China’s did.

I have been aware of “Bath England” ,The Lady of Bath through History and English Literature. However I was not aware of Bath Michigan. So naturally I ran a web check and found that in 1927 there was the first US School Bombing.

Liz, I read your Carter Keynsian link and it offers a nice excuse for the Carter years, except that that wasn’t the way it happened. I was there, and running a business at the time as I have been for the past 39 years, and what was actually happening was that prices were going up and demand was down, and we were squeezed in the middle, as were all the other small businesses which make up the heart of the American economy. What pulled us out of Carter’s stagflation WAS Reagan’s policies- tax cuts, deregulation and turning business loose to grow. Free enterprise, Liz, the Austrian model of economics, always works better than tightly government controlled model. What you are seeing in your China stocks rising is loosening of the Chinese economy to allow some free enterprise. Less control, not more, by the Chinese government has caused China to improve. My son-in-law is Chinese American and I know about this. to some extent.

Now, what Obama is doing now is Carter squared, and will have the same result as it had during the Carter years, only worse. The economy is NOT improving. Unemployment is UP.Businesses are retracting- I know, I deal with them all over the nation in our industry. We scrapped plans to expand and are selling the piece of property we had planned to build a strip center on instead and pulling back. We certainly are not hiring, and business is relatively good in our part of the country. Cap and trade and higher taxes will make it worse, not better.

Down a bit today, but they have to take a breather sometimes. Don’t go for the gaming stocks though because I heard the government is getting involved in those.

The education stocks are skyrocketing as laid off workers are going back to school. Check out symbols (APOL, STRA, EDU). EDU is a Chinese company.

Liz, what are you doing to research your article? What sources are you using and on what do you base your hypothesis that the Republican party has totally different people in it than four years ago?

And I am still waiting for you to describe Keynsian economics in your own words! I suspect maybe you know the term but not really what it means- looking up websites is one thing, and it’s fine to read about these terms, but you seem to have trouble actually describing these ideas in your own words.

Your knowledge base seems shallow- not unusual at your age, by the way, and you will learn more when you realize what you really don’t know yet. Be skeptical of what college professors tell you. The older you get the less they will know in retrospect as real life teaches you what only experience can.

The base has shifted dramatically Retro. Those who really know what caused the economic collapse have left the party in droves, as it seems our “leaders” are pretty dishonest. I don’t know anyone who voted for Bush, my age that is! And that includes guys I know in the military. Most of them think the war in Iraq didn’t accomplish anything and that the Iraqi’s will have a new dictator within the next few years. They hope to be proven wrong, but they are doubtful democracy can last there. Since the election I’ve talked to older people who say they can’t stand the party’s new spokespeople and that they haven’t taken a stand on a new platform or any new ideas. They seem to just want to recycle the old ideas that didn’t work.

As for keynesian economics I just took the definition and info. from Wikopedia. I know it may or may not have worked during the 30’s, but because of the breakout of WWII we will never know for sure. I hope that this stimulus works, but if it doesn’t, we gave it a good try and avoided another great depression….hopefully.

Liz,Liz,Liz. For someone who seems to overvalue higher education, you seem to be “learning” what you know from scattered internet sources of dubious merit like Wiki. If you truly want to be an educated person, you need to READ. Books. Lots of them. Have you taken a class in economics?

Are you basing your perception of the Republican party on what your young friends tell you in your local area? That will be anecdotal at best and give you a very limited view of the world. May I suggest reading the following books:
Liberty and Tyranny, number one on the NY Times bestseller list by Mark Levin. Bias, Arrogance, and 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America by Bernard Goldberg. The new Common Sense paperback, already number one in its category on NYT Best Seller list and only six bucks and change, by Glenn Beck. That one I haven’t read yet, have read all the others and they are excellent.

Culture Warrior by Bill O’Reilly. The classic Atlas Shrugged and The Founainhead by Ayn Rand. Been years since I read that one. 1984. Look for the parrallels to what is happening today. We have Big Brother and groupspeak already. I think it was called groupspeak in the book, been awhile.

Frankly, Liz, you aren’t ready to really write an article until you do some serious reading and actual research. You are forming opinions right now out your backside, to put it crudely. But that’s the truth. Start reading and quit “talking” for awhile and you will really have something to say.

Liz, those are also good suggestions for reading, jimmy offerd; some of the same ones I included. Have you read any of the books on either list? As for O’Reily’s books, you are missing some inportant information if you only choose a book based on your secondhand perceptions of the author. Lots of excellent writers throughout history have been less than perfect people. It is narrow-minded to refuse to read a book because you think the author is “rude”. You can pick any book up at the public library for free and peruse it without buying it. Try opening your mind; you might learn something, and for goodness’ sake, READ something besides the internet blogs and Wiki.

What part of the country are you in? Your perception of the Republican Party is going to be limited if you only talk to people in your local area. What other sources are you using to research your article? I actually am a published writer, although in a specialized field and would be glad to offer some suggestions. What publication is your article to be used for?

Thank you, Jimmy, exactly. Others might have some favorite books to share, too. The thing that concerns me about younger people is how sophisticated they are about technology ( certainly far more than me), but what a dearth of information they have about history and how limited they have been in their reading. I am not seeing the background kids get today compared to the heavy reading in history and literature we did in college. It’s all Wiki and blogs and bull sessions and as Liz demonstrates here, when you really ask in-depth or even cursory questions, there is no “there” there. These are our “voters” of today. No wonder we are getting the government we are. And the sad part is I will be dead but the Liz’s of the country will have to live with their ignorantly formed choices and so will everybody else. I’m being kind of hard on you here, Liz, but honestly it is a kindness, especially if you are writing. I don’t know if you have sold articles before, or who this is for, or what their standards are, or if this is a school paper, but regardless if you have anyone reading it with discernment you need to have good research to back it up or it will not do what you want.

That will be with me for life….

We luckily had a campus nerd ( even nerdier than me) who was ALWAYS at the library and would be so thrilled if a girl even talked to him he would leap joyously through the library and find anything you needed for your research. What a brain you have! My husband has been listening to audio books and reading books ( anew found pleasure) for several years now- all genres but has learned more about history than he knew was there! His father is a retired dean from Michigan State University who was an English prof but is also an in depth student and teacher of history as a avocation. He continues to teach at age 81 the topics of Women in History, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain ….you name it. The disucssions between father and son has made fascinating what used to bore my husband to death in high school and college. He has so much knowledge and insight into what is happening today because of what he has learned about a much younger country and the not so nice fact that the colloquialism absolute power corrupts absolutely is unfortunately the main headline throughout history. He laughs at my surprise at modern day politicians and their arrogance and messianic tendencies. Go back into any social or political or economic crisis and you will find nothing new under the sun. Too bad modern young people have little time for true stories and education has been replaced by the internet.

Thanks Retro, I do have very good research to back it up, and no I am not just interviewing local people, but thanks for asking. I said I would post a link to the article if I’m published, but I had to change my mind about that because I’ve had threats here. I have read lots of books, but not too many political ones. I just got interested in politics last fall when the economy fell apart…..as did lots of other people. It’s really not my forte! If I need any help I’ll let you know.

I don’t like Bill O’Reilly as a person because he’s so lacking in basic social skills, and even you would have to admit that. He’s very rude to his guests and I just don’t think that kind of behavior is called for in any situation, therefore I would not buy his book. I know he is very smart, unlike Glen Beck, who I think will say whatever he can get paid to say. I don’t think he has any true beliefs of his own. These are just my opinions from observation. Next time I’m in Borders I might pick up O’Reilly’s book and look through it.

Thanks Retro, I do have very good research to back it up, and no I am not just interviewing local people, but thanks for asking. I said I would post a link to the article if I’m published, but I had to change my mind about that because I’ve had threats here. I have read lots of books, but not too many political ones. I just got interested in politics last fall when the economy fell apart…..as did lots of other people. It’s really not my forte! If I need any help I’ll let you know.

I don’t like O’Reilly as a person because he’s so lacking in basic social skills, and even you would have to admit that. He’s very rude to his guests and I just don’t think that kind of behavior is called for in any situation, therefore I would not buy his book. I know he is very smart, unlike Glen Beck, who I think will say whatever he can get paid to say. I don’t think he has any true beliefs of his own. These are just my opinions from observation.

Next time I’m in Borders I might pick up O’Reilly’s book and look through it. I would read Huckabee or Chris Wallace if they have books out. I always liked Mike Wallace, and so did my dad, even though he’s Republican. I think it’s funny that Chris is so different from his dad, although they look a lot alike.

I disagree he is lacking in basic social skills. He simply asks hard questions and will not allow his guests to filiuster or avoid answering a question like they do on the other networks. If anything, I think Bill is too soft on them sometimes, but on the whole, he tries to be balanced and is fair to his guests. He has no patience with abuse of children, and neither do I. And he was the only interviewer on TV who called Barney Frank to task for the ridiculous things he got away with, although this last interview he did with him he gave him a pass and let him sit there and lie without calling him on it and playing his own quote which would have refuted what he was saying on the show.

I don’t have a problem with plain talk. I do have a problem with the abusiveness I see on some of the other networks. If you want to talk about a lack of basic social skills, how about refering to ME and the other million people who love this country and are concerned about government spending enough to attend a tea party a gross sexual term and redneck? Now THAT is lacking in basic social skills if you ask me. The hosts on other networks used this offensive term over and over the day of the tea parties. And as a result of that kind of thing, they have lost a large part of their audience and continue to lose more.

It seems”socially skillful” to insult men, white people, conservatives, Christians, people who are prolife, southerners, especially Texans, rural people, farmers, gun owners, etc.

You are using bigoted, insulting stereotypes to characterize southerners and Sanford. I disagree with what he did. I disagreed with it when Clinton did it, and when Barney Frank’s boyfriend ran a gay brothel out of his apartment, too. I don’t stereotype all in his party or all gay people because of the actions of individuals, however, or make fun of their part of the country.

You talked about being rude- what you said is RUDE. It is disrespectful to southerners and to Republicans who ARE faithful to their wives, which most of both parties are. If you wish to disapprove of Sanford, disapprove of SANFORD without the bigotry towards his party and his part of the country. “Politically correct” bigotry is just as offensive as any other bigotry.

I haven’t read the Vanity Fair article, but I admire Sarah Palin very much. She is a good example of someone who is everything the feminists claim to admire. A self-made woman who worked her way through college and achieved the governorship of a large state all on her own. She also fought corruption within her own party. And she represents “choice”. She chose to give life to a child with a problem and love him anyway. She also can speak well extemporaneously even when HER teleprompter malfunctions and not miss a beat. Pretty amazing how well she has handled the pressure and the incredible slurs thrown at her. Do you despise the namecalling that has been directed at her, too, Liz? Retro, I am NOT into name calling, but this blog is. They have called me all kinds of stuff from “libturd” to “whacko” and many things in between just because of my “not so conservative” views on some things.

I think Sarah Palin is a very nice and likable person, but I don’t think she has what it takes to be VP. She doesn’t have a broad range of knowledge. It’s very limited, as evidenced in her interviews with Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson last year. I think she’s come a long way since then, but I still have great reservations about her. There are many more qualified women who could run on the Republican ticket, including even some of the reporters on Fox. I can think of one or two off the top of my head who are much more knowledgable than she is about government. I think she knows what she needs to know to be governor of a sparsely populated state, but beyond that is a stretch. That’s just my opinion, but I know a lot of women who feel the same. She does seem to be very popular with men however.

Liz, I have written feature stories for local publications and articles for a national swimming pool and spa trade journal connected with our industry. My husband and I own a small swimming pool business. I also wrote a book on pool and spa care and have sold about 15,000 of them, mostly through our trade distribution centers of a large distribution company. People in our industry include them for their customers when they build them a pool or sell them a spa, or sell them in retail stores for pool supplies, or buy them for emplyee training. It has a test in the back and there is a Spanish version, too as well as English. Most of my articles for the trade deal with customer service issues. I also ocassionally give seminars for other pool retail store owners. I’ve been in this business about 36 years and my husband 39.

Why? He really has no executive experience. His school grades are hidden. He has very little track record of real accomplishment. No business experience. There is question about the actual authorship of his books. His state of Illinois which he represented is a mess.

Sarah Palin has been a small business person, a mayor, a governor, negotiated contracts with oil and gas companies and is an energy expert, has a track record of fighting corruption within her party while Obama rose to power as part of a totally corrupt system in Chicago.

Name a job he has created. A budget he has balanced. A successful financial transaction- even his house deal was engineered by a corrupt criminal, Tony Rezco.

Name an actual accomplishment? And not ” he went to Harvard”; if graduating college is a qualification for President then I even have that. And I suspect I had higher grades- I’m not ashamed to show mine, anyway, unlike him.

In the rare times he speaks without the teleprompter, it is halting, inarticulate, and he makes some egregious mistakes, like not knowing how many states there are. He is vague and his figures don’t add up for his programs, there are no specifics, nor does he have any proof whatsoever anything he has proposed will work. None of these policies ever have anyplace else in the world they have already been tried.

Yes, I have seen pics of that pool in Brazil. It is huge! Very interesting job. Never seen it in person but we have seen some really elaborate ones that were fun to see in Hawaii.

We build very high end elaborate and custom home pools, with waterfalls, caves, fire, etc. My husband is a real artist and has won a lot of design awards and I am very proud of him. He works incredibly hard, though.

OK, Sarah’s state is run by Exxon Mobil. She doesn’t have much to do…it’s all taken care of. Alaskans have been sharing in oil profits for decades so that’s nothing she negotiated.

Obama has a great education and an extremely competent staff. He doesn’t do everything you know. All the details are not worked out yet, but he has lots of things well underway. Give him a chance and you’ll see. I think he will be 100% better than the previous administration who chose to ignore things that needed to be addressed years ago….like health care. Status quo is not good. Change is! That’s my opinion. I’m not saying he will be 100% successful at everything, but I do think he’s on the right track. Most Americans agree with me so far….look at the Gallup polls…those are for real.

Alaska is not run by Exxon Mobile. She has negotiated important projects on behalf of her state. She has one of the highest approval ratings in the country in her state- while Obama is now in the negative -2 approval rating as of today. I think that is according to the Rasmussen poll. However, I don’t put much confidence in polls or “popularity” in judging the effectiveness of people. Sometimes the best decisions are hard and unpopular.

You named absolutely no specific accomlishments you can point to about Obama Liz. Nobody ever can, since so far there are not any. And what he is proposing will be disastrous for our country.

And olini, I think young people are overly impressed with their experiences in college and tend to mistake it for actual knowledge until they really experience a bit more of life and realize what they don’t know. Theories have a way of not working out so well in practice. That’s what worries me so much for our country led by Obama; he has been exposed to so much theory, much of it faulty, and not ever dealt with the practical in life. He is like a terminal college student and it is is so dangerous for the country. He just isn’t equipped to handle it at best or truly has a very nefarious agenda at worst. Either way we’re in deep doodoo.

It might not be so bad if he at least had experienced and competent people around him but he is surrounded with tax cheats who gamed the system and got us into this mess in the first place. Very, very scary.

The market is raging today and I’m making money on my stocks. The markets love Obama, even though the CNBC commentators are right wing and always trying to find something negative. So much money on the sidelines that believes in America. What do most Americans think about this administration? Take a look around and you will see…crystal clear! You have to know where to look!

Obama was the second biggest recipient of lobby money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, after, I think, Chris Dodd. The Democrats are heavily influenced by lobby money from the trial lawyers, the unions, and various other groups, so please don’t insult our intelligence by telling us only Republicans are influenced by lobbyists. A major way to negate the influence of lobbyists would be to institute the Fair Tax, which the Democrats vehemently oppose. Does this tell you something? Lobbyists, you see, are usually lobbying for what? Favorable tax treatment for their clients. Eliminate our complicated tax code they hide behind and guess what? You eliminate lobby influence.

Notice something Liz- I didn’t tell you to “google” this or that, or post a link, because I know these things off the top of my head from reading and experience. You are confusing the bits and pieces you think you know about these things with an actual in-depth understanding of them, which, frankly, you do not have. That is why I am recommending you READ more. I don’t think you have and I don’t think you are, and you need to to be the educated person you claim to respect. Life will give you the practical experience and deservedly kick your butt, like it does all of us.

I am not a “party” person. I am if anything more libertarian than anything else, but I vote for the indivudal.

I am not a Republican, although the Democrats have failed to put forth a candidate that I could possibly vote for. I try to sort through the campaign hype and look at the issues at hand. When the hype belies the intent, then I run away as fast as I can. There is no REAL honesty in politics, so we each have to be our own jury.

One thing most of the voters agree on though and that is with the issue of taxes, they are very skeptical when looking at candidates’ promises.

A majority of the Democrats, 53% say that a fair tax system would be one that would have those with a higher income paying a higher percentage in income taxes and 34% think everyone should pay the same percentage.

Republicans, on the other hand, have 66% who say that everyone should pay the same rate and 34% who say those who make more, should pay more.

When they look at the total picture, without the partisan approach, 48% of all voters think everyone should pay the same and 40% think it should be even.

There are two schools on proposed changes to the tax code.

Some people favor a fair tax. My take is that it should have a minimum threshhold of $30,000 for an individual and $60,000 for a married couple. No deductions, no gimmes. The percentage should be based on the requirements of a REASONABLE BUDGET. Maybe over simplified, bu easy to manage. The extra IRS personnel that are on longer required for tax collection could be reassigned to ICE, tracking down illegals (wetbacks).

Some people favor a national sales tax. I personally feel that this would put an extreme burden on lower income people when it comes to major purcahses.

The Democrats favor a TOTAL TAX. How much did you make? Send it to US and WE will give you back what WE think you deserve.

John, what do you think with? If the auto companies had not been bailed out the domino effect would have been disastrous…..millions of people would have lost their jobs. All the suppliers would be bankrupt as well. We would be in a deep depression right now….as I’m sure we would be if McCain had won the election.

As for the unions, would you rather see those factory jobs taken by illegal wetbacks (to use olinl’s term) Mexicans? The Republicans would tear down the wall if they could so big business could make big money with very little cost and pad their pockets. Unfortunately, this would wipe out the middle class eventually, but who cares about them anyway?

Government employees have the best healthcare and retirement in the country….it’s good work if you can get it. I have an uncle who is retired from the State Department and boy is he ever living on easy street. It’s hard for our lawmakers to get their heads around the private sector, but I love how they try to brush us off. What’s good enough for them isn’t good enough for us. The strongest unions protect government workers. My aunt worked for Brady during the Reagan years and there was one employee she wanted to get rid of so bad, but she couldn’t. The union protected her even though she wasn’t doing her job and was absent most of the time. However, she will get a great retirement and she has the best medical insurance.

I think we have the wrong slant of what happened to the automobile companies, speciffically Chrysler and GM. These companies have been nothing more than life support systems for the UAW. Who wins with the bailouts, THE UAW. The only difference is that instead of the auto companies making enough in profits to support the UAW, we, the taxpayers are now supporting the UAW.

Collective bargaining is a necessary tool in controlling management abuse. Union control of an entire industry is a disaster looking for a place to happen.

Remember this. The treasury has poured billions into the financial system, promising that we would be paid back, and we don’t even have any bad paper, let alone good paper. Where did the money go, and where ARE the derivatives now? Paulson started this while rational people screamed. Geithner was at the New York Fed and it was his plan that was implemented. That is why it was so important that he get the Treasury job, because the whole thing was a giant Ponzi scheme.

Should mothers be arrested for drinking wine while breast feeding? Can someone can tell me why we’re worrying about the health of unborn babies anyway, especially since we’ve ABORTED fifty million unborn babies since Roe v. Wade? C’mon! Is that “thing” in the mother’s womb a real life or not? We should make up our minds.
Again, we are wrong if we blame Bush and no one else for the recession. Just as the causes of the Great Depression began probaby 20 years beforehand, the same is true with this mess. Again, the power of the purse resides with Congress, and most of them were Democrats; so Bush cannot be blamed entirely.
As for Sarah Palin being ready for vice-president, I think she is as competent to be vice president as Al Frankin is to be senator. In the Middle Ages, comedians were called “fools”. We have enough of those in Washington now!

I don’t get it.
Again, it isn’t fair to blame Bush alone for the current economy. The CONGRESS has the constitutional “power of the purse”, and most of them were DEMOCRATS.

I disagree Roy. I think she needs an intervention….by family maybe. Someone should educate her about feeding that kid. He obviously can’t move, so he can’t get his own food. Maybe she wants to keep him prisoner in her home. Who knows what her crazy motives are. She is as sick as he is. I think some medical professionals have to teach her how to parent this kid before she kills him.

People. PLEASE. THE FAIR TAX is not about a “fair” tax. It is a specific proposal you can find out more about by googling http://www.fairtax.org. It is the proposal Mike Huckabee favored during the campaign. Basically, it ELIMINATES the income tax and replaces it with a tax on purchases. This means you do not ever file income tax again. You simply pay on what you guy, like a state sales tax, only federal. It is simple, it is collected through the existing state structures, it would be revenue neutral meaning it brings in the same as the income tax now, it eliminates a gret deal of lobbying influence, it collects taxes being “dodged” right now by the underground cas economy of drug dealers, etc. You control how much you are taxed by controlling your spending. This is the basic; you can learn more about it on the Fair Tax website.

Liz, the Dixiecrats were a segregationist wing of the Democrat party during the 50’s-60’s who opposed school integration, among other things, and ran a third party candidate, George Wallace, during the Civil Rights controversy years.

He has some very good ideas and I like him alot. I think he’s a very good person and would make a good candidate in 2012. I was disappointed he didn’t make it through the last one. I also liked Romney. His dad was governor of Michigan for 8 years….good people. I was so upset when John McCain made it. I thought “oh, great, they had a good group to pick from and came out with McCain”! Grrrrrr……go figure! JMO.

Harry Truman’s decision to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved probably up to two million American soldier’s lives who would have had to fight inch by inch to invade Japan. It was a great example of a hard decision that saved more lives than it cost. Especially ours.

Truman fought in the Meusse Argonne offensive in World War One. So did my Dad. So possibly Truman realized what our soldiers would face and it influenced his decision.

And actually it is more the other way around. THe current administration is more focused on doing what the people want and not so much what the insurance lobbyists want. 75% of Americans want some type of national healthcare option and now they will get it. The insurance companies got too large and one of them, AIG, started the whole process that brought this country to the brink of depression. AIG was too big to fail….according to Paulson last summer — he was in the last administration, remember! He also started all the bank bailouts with Bear Stearns in the Spring of 2008. Investment banks were a strong lobby…none of them are left. Lehman Bros. was the only one allowed to fail and Paulson thought it was a mistake to let that happen. When you talk about letting companies fail, think of how the Bush admin. prevented that from happening.

Shepherd Smith has even admitted he doesn’t know what Beck’s show is about, and Neil Cavuto got real mad at him once for “fearmongering”. He’s just a political commentator and he blurts out things without researching or checking his facts. You need to check his credentials. Google him! You’ll find lots of “strange” things!

“Maybe an attention-deficit host is exactly what an attention-deficit public wants. I saw the polls on Obama, too. It appears that the people are disappointed with the continuing slide in the economy and that the chicken in every pot promise is not forthcoming and nothing but higher taxes for every person in America- those living now and those not yet born- are in store. And the more I hear about how ACORN is inside just about every liberal democrat and moderate democrat group is scary!! Mob rule is typically seen only in socialist countries…oh wait, they must feel quite at home here.

Washington’s first school papers are dated 1741. He already knew how to read, write and do math. How old was he when he wrote them? He was born in 1732.

Washington learned surveying in school. One of his school papers is a survey of his half-brother’s turnip field. How would surveying help Washington?

His school paper showed he studied some geography, how to calculate interest on money, and copied many legal forms that were in use in Virginia. List one way Washington would use these skills later in life.

You think the party that just violated our bankruptcy laws and ruined the retirement of the teachers of Indiana in order to take care of the UAW in a sweetheart payback deal regarding the Chrysler and GM bankruptcies is not controlled by special interests. You are, indeed confused and not interested in putting your prejudices aside to understand the truth. As I have suggested before, read some books, including the two on the bestseller list from Glenn Beck, and then you can get back to us with some more mature and informed opinions. Right now you are enamored by college and ignoring getting an actual education. If you really want to be a writer, heed what I say.

Liz, when you quote something, you should enclose it in quotation marks and cite the source. Otherwise it is plagiarsm, a huge no-no for writers or anybody else. Joe Biden almost got booted out of law school for doing that. In my opinion he should have. Teddy Kennedy also got booted from Harvard for cheating as well. Seems to be a pattern that has continued for both guys.

As for economics, have you taken a course in it yet and can you explain any of it without resorting to plagiarizing the internet or posting a link? You should be able to explain it in your own words if you understand it. So far you have not been able to do so.

I agree with you that education is important, but it isn’t everything. Earlier I alluded to Harry Truman as being relatively uneducated; and I notice you saw my comment. I wasn’t sure exactly what his educational background was, but I knew that compared to others, he was not exactly an intellectual. I also agree that the deaths of people at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were terrible. It would have been a dicision that would have killed me had I been the president who made them. Nevertheless, regardless of how people view Truman’s decision to use the bomb, many historians regard him as “great”. I don’t know if they are accurate, but I will say that education does not ensure greatness in the White House. No president knows everything anyway; but they know how to surround themselves with people who ARE knowledgeable and who can advise him (or her) about options available for a particular decision. That is why I believe Sarah Palin would do just fine. She had more ADMINISTRATIVE experience that Obama, McCain, or Joe Biden put together; and that is what we need now, I believe–someone with administrative smarts.
What I’ve noticed about Beck is that, although some of his notions seem a little “out there”, his GUESTS are folks that DO know what they are talking about, or at least they should know, given their positions or titles. Incidentally, Joe Scarbouroh recently was VERY critical of Obama, calling his economic ideas too “RADICAL”. He’s right!

I know Joe Scarborough is very moderate and I listen to him. He’s Republican and he has a book out that everyone here has dissed completely. I don’t know why. He’s not far right enough for them. I have said numerous times that I don’t know if Obama is doing all the right things, but he inherited a huge task…and he is surrounded by a very good team of economists, strategists, etc. Give him a chance and don’t just call him horrible names. He is the president you know, and hasn’t had time to screw up much yet. At least that’s how most of the American public views him so far.

Liz, the retired teachers of Indiana had a large portion of their retirement invested in bonds of either Chrysler or General Motors. When the government took over the car companies, they ignored bankruptcy law, and instead of the “bondholders” being placed first to be paid as bankruptcy law specifies, they gave a larger share to the unions and forced the bondholders to take cents on the dollar in violation of the law. This caused the schoolteachers to lose a large portion of their retirement in favor of the UAW union. It was totally outrageous and illegal. But, Obama did it as payback to the union for supporting him in the election.

As for Keynsian economics, Liz, you STILL cannot explain it i your own words. If you knew anything about economics as you claim you do, you could just tell what it means yourself without the crutches of the wiki links. Have you ever had an economics class?

carolynro, how true, how true. I took economics in 1961 in summer school as a college freshman and still can describe Keynsian economics in rough terms without looking it up. It is mysterious to me that Liz uses the term so often and disses other’s understanding of economics yet can obviously not do this. I certainly did not learn what I know about economics in college, though. I took more of it around 1966 when I was still working my way through after having to drop out awhile and work. I was learning more eco out of class living on part of an 87 dollar a month pay from a husband in basic training and working two jobs to pay the 127 a month house payment, though. I was commuting to night school classes and saved money by eating a candy bar out of the machine at college for a quarter.

The Obamas are now spending my tax money from those sacrifices on 200k date nights to NY on the private plane I pay for and insisting global warming requires ME to sacrifice. I understand these economic principles all too well, unlike our friend Liz here. In Texas we are quite familiar with the smell of bull pucky and it is hard to baffle us with it, you see.

My dear old father in law is a retired English Dean from MSU. He knows something about everything in American history and literature. But, while living in the world of academia, he rarely knew what the heck was going on inside his family or in the world outside of MSU, for that matter. Mom used to have to remind him to zip his pants- LOL. He traveled the world, studying and teaching. He can recite thousands of pieces of literature, names and dates of the births of his beloved authors but didn’t know the dates of his own kids birthdays. When he finally retired, he began to watch Fox News. He then started his second education about how to take care of someone instead of being the one who was taken care of as mom began her long slow death. He has had to learn about insurance claims, how to hire people to do things around the house as mom had done. She had always done all of the business of the family including taking care of all the family finances and buying the 4 houses they’d shared over the 53 years they’d been married. He is a brilliant man but needed to get engaged in life in order to complete his education. That required leaving the cloistered life of an academian.

I’m not sure how the bankruptcy courts will handle the bondholders, but I know they won’t be left out in the cold. If nothing else, I’m sure they will have equity in the new company, so all is not lost! If I was a bondholder, I wouldn’t be too worried about it. GM’s products are still top rate. My boyfriend has a Silverado and I love to drive it…and I think it’s far superior to Ford’s F series of trucks…but that’s just my opinion!

Keynes believed that depressions were recessions that had fallen into a “liquidity trap.” A liquidity trap is when people hoard money and refuse to spend no matter how much the government tries to expand the money supply. Keynes believed that the government should do what individuals were not…namely, spend. Keynes called this “priming the pump” of the economy, a final government effort to reestablish the circular flow of money. Do you get it now? If you have any questions, please call the White House and they will be happy to explain it further.

As for the Chinese….those people have lived under a harsh dictatorship since 1948….not allowed to participate in any form of democracy or free enterprise. As the Communist government repeatedly failed…..yes, the government began to understand they they needed trade and commerce to survive.

Also, are you familiar with the city of Kowloon?….Back in the 1980s….the Chinese government quietly moved over 6 million government trained workers to Kowloon. They built huge factories there, …….docks, highways, etc……all so they could trade with the west…..Kowloon is just across the harbor from what was a free Hong Kong…..China depends on free trade with the west (capitalism) for their very survival.

Jimmy, that’s a good solution but unfortunately it won’t work. Our representatives love their jobs and we will probably never even put term limits on them. I wish capitalism could work, but our population is getting out of control and the Bush admin. opened the borders to Mexico. We don’t even have requirements that they have some sort of occupation that’s needed here, like other countries do…we just took them all in, including criminals. Talk about gov’t. out of control.

I found a link on the Fox Business Network about national healthcare with an Aetna guy….he thinks it can work here. I think they will craft a system that can work for us. As it stands now, we are just pouring more money into our deficit like a waterfall. This guy seems to think it will work.

We saw that….you did not, so you have no real experience to judge what is happening here….now…..we know the warning signs. Didn’t you learn back in high school not to do that??! It is evident you are not able to explain it in your own words or you would have. If you plagiarize as a writer your writing career will be extremely short unless your editor is an idiot.

Hi Everyone,

Liz, I want to think the best of Obama. I hope he succeeds in fixing the economy, getting health care for everyone, etc. However, I must say, I’m having trouble liking what he is doing. I have 3 minors: one in economics, one in political science, and another in sociology. I also have more history classes under my belt than I care to think about. My point is not to brag about my education or impress anyone with my “deep understanding” of current events. I do not fancy myself a great scholar. My point is that, based on what I know about economics, politics, history, etc., I do not see how Obama’s ideas are going to work for our good. The laws of economics would have to violate themselves. Yes, Keyensian economics believes in spending to spur demand; but spending to the level the government is practicing now increases the money supply to astronomical levels. When money supply goes up too much, runaway inflation almost always follows. Sometimes it is necessary to raise money supply and increase spending, but I fear we are not being discriminating in HOW we spend. I’m afraid we are about to change America into a new country with a new type of economy that may, in fact, level the playing field for Americans, but will, unfortunately level it to a very LOW bar that most of us will not like or appreciate. Capitalism, even with its occasional flaws, works better than socialism at its very best.

Sorry Retro, but I don’t have time to go into a lengthy discussion with you, or look at your Austrian model. I trust this admin. to do the right thing, just like you guys all trusted Bush! LOL I have other things to work on, and I have to get a paper done soon. That’s my priority right now, and I’m not discussing Keynesian economics in my paper. I’m discussing “attitudes” of the far right — and you guys are giving me a bunch! Thanks a bunch!

Roy, Jimmy, Dog: The capitalism that some of us revere does not accomodate for the outrageous interference by special interests like the ones who value the spotted owl over a healthy economy in which people can afford to take care of themselves. All of the regulations that have been put in place to save ourselves from ourselves and all the lawyers that are ready to swoop in to sue people who make things that people use inappropriately or who file law suits against companies the second a company wants to start a new business have ruined his country and have ruined the work ethic of millions of Americans who want government via tax dollars taken from the backs of us who are the taxable to take care of them. And the liberal left has cooperated splendidly in allowing and even encouraging millions of Americans to think of themselves as victims. There are too m any people who have time to agitate instead of profligate. Capitalism requires more people pulling the wagon and fewer people riding in the wagon.

I think “time will tell” in this case. Only until people lose personally under a regime do they finally get it. I was in my late 20’s when Carter was president and didn’t connect the dots until I had the benefit of hindsight. I had no historical perspective at the time and I certainly didn’t spend hours trying to convince older and wiser and more introspective people who also had hindsight that I knew more than they did!

Retro, I’m trying to post something about how the “free markets” work themselves out, but can’t do it…it’s lost in space. I’ll try to paraphrase….the CEO of Google, who is an economist as well, said it will take ten years or more for this economy to “work itself out”. In the meantime, we would be going through a very deep recession or depression without stimulus. Many more people think this way than not. We would have much higher unemployment (regardless of whether it’s teachers or infrastructure workers) in the public and private sector. Frozen credit markets would cause many more businesses to fail. You should know that…you have a business.

Jimmy, that sounds familiar. You mean- if a government takes over private enterprises, violates law by usurping the bankruptcy code, and proposes legislation that denies private property rights and prevents selling such without them passing “federal insepctions” to prove they comply with “environmental” standards, attmepts to restrict the right to bear arms, and proposes legislation to make life and eeath decisions of health care for citizens instead of we the people making them, and offers other long trains of abuses- WE THE PEOPLE have the right to throw the bums out. Works for me.

Good luck throwing the bums out because unfortunately there are no better bums to put in…yet…and “we the people” have spoken by throwing out the “crooks”. I know my 401K is looking a lot better! Someday, maybe everyone will wake up and smell the coffee, but until then – c’est la vie!
