Alisyn in the Greenroom

Saturday Morning

I don’t like reporting on shooting massacres and not just because they’re horribly tragic and sad.  But because I’m not sure that reporting the enormity of the crime or the shooter’s identity does anything but plant a seed with other unhinged people.  It just feels like deja vu all over again everytime we hear about one of these crazed gunman’s acts.  But surely a crime of this proportion is the very definition of news, you might argue.   Maybe.  Certainly for the people in Binghamton NY it is.  I’m not sure for the people in Bellingham, Wa it’s critical to their daily lives or people in Birmingham, AL.  Am I wrong?

What’s North Korea doing with this impending missile launch?  And what should the U.S. response be.  We’ll have some of the best minds in international relations on to discuss.

Are men with sisters better balanced, more sensitive and generally healthier than men without them?  That’s the finding of a new study.  Clayton has a strong opinion on this one.  What do you think?

More as it develops on the show…

Good morning All, I don’t understand why the people go on these massacres. They must have lost all hope. I think if they would look to a higher power they would’nt do these crimes. As far as the missles go I would shoot it down as soon as it is fired. But I’m known as a hothead at times. Cold in Ohio this AM

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

If only shooters like this one had God or anyone they could turn to before causing such devastation

Good morning Ally and all I wish there was a way to idenify these killers. They must have lost all hope. If they would seek God they would’nt do these crimes. My prayers are with the victims and their families. As far as the missles go, I would shoot it down when it’s fired. Cold in Ohio this Am

Good morning Ali –

Interesting questions/topics this morning – I agree with the reporting of the shooting, clicking on the light of another unhinged person, wanting to become ‘famous’.

Regarding the men with sisters becoming healthier, more sensitive than men without, I believe it depends on the family dynamics from the beginning, I’ve seen both situations. Having a sister doesn’t make a guy a more warm, caring person – it depends on the individual.

Good morning Ms. Alisyn,

I agree with you. While some reporting is proper hour after hour is over kill and just might give a copy cat the idea to also try it. Express the necessary concern, report the facts and let it go. We all grieve for those who lost loved ones, but over doing it is not necessary.

N. Korea should have been over run back in the 50’s. Just couldn’t do it at the time with the resources on hand. They will continue to do what they have done for the last 50 years until all the UN Countries band together and put a stop to it.

I have no sisters, but I seem to be pretty healthy. Great to see you for the second day ni a row.

Good Morning to all
I know it must be tough on all of you to report on incidents like these but I guess as news people it is a nessecary evil. I know they say guns dont kill people, people kill people but bottom line people are still dead. Im not so sure our forefathers envisioned todays world when they wrote the 2nd amendment.
N Korea – I dont think we have to do anything as I feel China or someone else will shoot the missle down. The resident nut case in N Korea is just trying to stir the pot.

Comment by Mike K

To be honest,I haven’t seen much of the coverage of this shooting, so maybe I’m not in a position to discuss it. There is something about covering these types of tragedies that bothers me though. I don’t like when there is a limited amount of footage available, and its shown over and over again. The other thing that is more of pet peeve, is when the networks give names to these events. I always get the feeling that they are trying to outdo their competition.
I hope that North Korea will feel enough pressure to not launch that missile/satellite. I believe that Japan would shoot it down, and who knows what that will lead to.

Morning Alisyn,

I am saddened by the news of the shooting(s) I wish more of the reporting was on the poor victims, we learn everything that can be found about the maniac’s who commit these heinous crimes but WHO are the people going along their normal everyday, interrupted by a madman? Can you(news) find out more about the victims, give them the respect & honor their memories.

I’ll Pray for the unknown,

Good Morning Alisyn,

Hearing Obama’s comment about America being arrogant reminds me of the comment a few weeks ago by Attorney General Eric Holder when he said America is a “nation of cowards” in reference to racism.

I hope Lauren talks about the biggest outrage is the fact they are going to give Obama an Honorary Law Degree. While he passes laws, and give executive orders giving our tax dollars out for abortions. Also the FOCA bill he is trying to pass will make criminals out of Doctors and Hospitals that will not give abortions this will allow late term abortions up to the tiime before the child enters the birth canal.

If they want Obama there, then let it be in a discussion forum where he talks about and answer questions on FOCA.

Good morning all.

A friend of mine who lives in NY thinks that the state will use the Binghamton tragedy as an excuse to impose further gun control. I think it should be a reason for just the opposite. If one of the employees at that place had been packing, they could’ve fired back and saved lives.

Comment by malone

Contrary to Laura’s report, I believe the portion of the story about the victims of the NY shooting taking a citizenship test is incorrect. That was an early AP story that was later refuted by the Immigration Service. The American Civic Association is not allowed to give citizenship tests. At most they may have been taking a practice test as part of a citizenship class.

Also contrary to Clayton’s comments, there is a dispute over the fact if the shooter had been an employee of IBM. IBM spokesman Fred McNeese, when asked if a Linh Voong had worked for the company, said: “We did not have an employee or contractor by that name” — in Endicott or elsewhere.

Comment by βɛʈʈɥ

I personally do no like the “kiss greeting”. I’m with Jerry Sienfield. To me a kiss is a form of intimacy reserved for those friends and family who are closest to you. I am surprised that many Americans would use such a greeting. We barely talk with our voices to one another. When you pass on a street you get a text from the passer by saying “hi, how r u? ttyl”

Obama’s no-kiss a diss? I don’t think so. A diss is intentional, but I don’t think he knows what he’s doing in many situations. Alisyn,
I understand your feelings about reporting on the mass shootings in AL and NY, but its times like these that I thing about what our Founding Father George Washington said, “The church, the plow, the prairie wagon, and citizen’s firearms are indelibly related. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable. Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place with all that’s good. When firearms go, all goes; we need them every hour.” Based on this, there would have to have to be 30,600 “insane” shootings to exceed 99 and 99/100 %. Currently (2007) we have 10086 murders by firearm. Most of these were not due to insanity, but crimes of passion, ie cheating spouses and fights/disputes. I am not condoning it, that guy was a nutbag and deserves to be dead, as he is, but many people get upset, scared and would be tempted to say guns should be outlawed. The fact is you are more likely to get struck by lightning or attacked by a shark or winning the lottery on your next Florida vacation than you are to be killed by an insane gunmen bent on mass murder.

Comment by Eric Pointer

Good Morning,
The shooting, although tragic, doesn’t affect the lives of people nationally. It is good headlines, but I agree with you in that it empowers those who might be sitting on the fence as to whether or not they want to do something like this in some other part of the country. It also empowers liberals and left wingers to begin this crusade to disarm America. Congress will soon begin the process of destroying the second amendment, and they will site instances like this as yet another example of why we need more gun control in this country. If stories like this were not reported nationally, then congress would not be aware of it, because they have no idea of what goes on in this country without the national news headlines. If they didn’t watch the news they wouldn’t even know if it was raining outside, because the pedestals they sit on are so much higher than the rest of the country.

Regarding the shooting: Report the facts, then move on to other important news of the day. It is a tragic to say the least, but with this new administration and what Joe Biden said yesterday about “doing” something to curb this careless act has me wondering about our rights and the ability to have guns.

Also the “ones” cruising aboard reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies. They are the gifts that keep on giving for gaffes. In fact the whole DimWit party is such an embarrassment to the United States. The “ones” should just stay over there with their socialism ideals.

Hi Alisyn–

GPS—I work with a tour company and was on a 2 bus trip to DCand the bus driver followed his GPS into the Dulles Airport parking lot and the 2nd bus followed right behind the first–right into the parking lot!! We were looking for our hotel! They actually took the ticket out of the machine and let the parking arm raise and pull into the lot! They said they could not turn around at that point. We could not exit because the buses were taller than the exit bars where the parking attendant takes takes your money at the exit. Airport security had to come and the buses had to back out of the parking lot. It was a real mess! The drivers were so embarrassed. It was what our passengers remembered most about their trip to DC. The driver will not live that one down!

Good Morning, Everyone; getting going late, but seeing and hearing Ms Ali is always my best tonic.

“What’s North Korea doing with this impending missile launch?” Well, the same thing we and many nations have done many, many, many times over the decades – testing and muscle flexing. It is a bit ethnocentric of us to claim that we, the exceptionalists, have the right to do that stuff, but no one else [other than maybe some of our friends], the unprincipled unwashed of the world, should do so.

Chas is not off-base in suggesting North Korea should not exist, if we had done what was necessary over 5 decades ago [in another of our many undeclared "wars"!], but we didn’t, and they do, and it’s too late now. I have found, though, that generally those who publicly rattle and unsheath sabres haven’t the ability nor intention to use them.

Good morning, everyone. Shouldn’t we be concerned about Obama’s statement “Europe’s leading role in the world”? It sounds like he plans to have the U.S. follow their lead into Socialism. “Arrogance”, as well as other statements he’s made on this trip indicate that he doesn’t understand America’s exceptionalism, nor does he really understand the character of America’s citizens. I think this goes beyond being in campaign mode.

Many of our friends traveling aborad over the past 8 years noticed increasing enmity toward Americans, and that was thanks exclusively to the “Ugly American”ism practiced by GWB – probably inspired by the advice given him by the Karl Roves of the administration.

Chas, yes running over himself could prove problematic. However, a car driving crazy (which has happened before) is very hard stop. I witnessed it personally in Iraq. When that starts happening, will they try and take away everyone’s car? No they won’t! Gun control has nothing to do with gun control and everything to do with subjugating the citizen. Here’s another quote for you.

“One of the basic conditions for the victory of socialism is the arming of the workers (Communist) and the disarming of the bourgeoisie (the middle class).” V. Lenin

I’m done with this rant now.

As chas cogently reminds us:

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson
================================
I agree with that fully, that was the focus and purpose of the Second Amendment [individual rights for self-protection weapons was so fundamental it didn't need a location in the Constitution], and the anti-government function of the Second makes one wonder if those who are shooting cops might not sometimes have a valid reason. We allow that the Second exists to allow us to shoot malefacting government agents, yet when people do so, we inconsistently rally behind the government people and against the individual, without knowing what sparked the gunfire. If we believe in the Second and the Jeffersonian reminder, what government agents do you think we could shoot? And not? And why?

Alisyn,

Agree, we don’t need to give recognition to the perpetrator. But, let’s call him what he is: A cold blooded MURDERER! I get sick of hearing ‘gunman’ and ’shooter’ used to describe MURDERERS. The media doesn’t say knifeman or clubman when the killing tool is different. This is what glamorizes killing in the minds of these people – they see this in movies and video games and feel they are just acting out a role.

Also, remember 5 hunters killed in Wisconsin in 2005, 33 killed in Virginia Tech in 2007 and now another mass killing in NY? See the pattern here?

Good Morning Ali,

With Obumma making his wonderful comment about America being arrogant on foreign soil is not surprising. He and his wife are the first family of arrogance. It just shows his cowardness and severe lack of professionalism. Gov. Huckabee is exactly right “face the one’s you’re calling names, don’t run to the opposite corner.” THIS IS AMERICA, NOT EUROPE and if he doesn’t like it here, stay over there.

He’s a horrible, boring and rambling speaker and comes across as wooden and phoney. Anyone can read a message from a 52″ plasma telepromter to say what Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed wrote and want him to say. But to speak from the heart, as well as impromtu takes talent. ie President Ronald Reagan.
He can’t do uh that, uh do you uh uh know what uh I uh mean? He forces me to change the channel as soon as he comes on.

Most people on a new job get 90 days to prove themselves or their out without reason. Hiliary said it best “this is not the time for on the job training”. How soon can we get impeachment proceedings started and show them the door with a one way ticket to France. Not to soon I think!!

As for Korea, If they do their so called” missile test.” Maybe we can do a “test” on our missile defense system and bring it down. oops!!

Comment by Gini

Alisyn,
Essentially, in answer to one comment, the behavior of a criminal can be put squarely in the lap of the criminal. I suppose many things might contribute to it all, however, t.v., mystery books, etc., do not fuel this, I don’t think. Who knows what goes through the mind, that a person could be capable of such atrocities? I have never thought to resort to bad deeds, and I watch Criminal Minds, and am an avid mystery book reader? Of course, there are those that think I am “unhinged”, hum??? :) :) :) And so it goes, I guess. We will never be able to understand, or prevent, these events.

=================================
Government was protecting itself in the main body of the Constitution, and the people then responded by announcing their right to protect themselves in the later enacted Bill of Rights…, which is why they were enacted…, and later. Amendments often turn on other parts of the fundamental law. Amendment 21 vs 18; 14th vs the imporatation clause [Art 1, sec 9]; the 25th vs some of Art. 2, etc.

I explained why – mentioning, spelling out, names of those who are, for some reason, the demigods of the uberrightists consistently do not get posted immediately. They get posted later [and the one I was complaining about finally, but too late for effect, did], but the blog rolls down so fast that by the time the protected things get past the “censors,” the effect is lost, because most people do not go back to see if things get posted late. Timing is often everything, and concocted ill-timing has an effect almost as effective as preventing the post entirely.

And it did post. But Karl [the same spelling as Karl Marx!] is no longer being interviewed; the program is over. So perhaps the practice is to not publish criticisms while the admired person is being saluted by the program, but it has happened to me so many times over the period of time I have participated in the blog that it cannot be coincidental and non-purposeful. Scatalogical and ad hominem comments timely come through if they are not against favored subjects; polite and tastefully expressed exposure of the ills of favored subjects, if named, do not, at least not while the subject is being discussed or is appearing on the show.

Good Morning from Flyover. Missed the show. Went hunting.

Which brings up an important safety issue. There are some people who should not be allowed to play with guns. I was carefully concealed this morning and doing my best impressions of a turkey hen needing attention, when I noticed something moving stealthily through the woods. It was a “Hunter” sneaking up on me. I shouted at him and he dropped his shotgun. Thank goodness it didn’t discharge. I went over, picked up his gun, unlaoded it and sent him packing with a few choice words of encouragement.

I realize that this is small potatoes in light of the incident yesterday. But it points up the issue again. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Whether we should all have free access to firearms is another issue.

Perhaps a safety course, properly completed, should be a pre-requisite to obtaining firearms. Many people feel this is an open invitation to government confiscating our firearms, because of the paper trail.

How say you?

The safety rail broke, and the son slipped, and down they went. Thankfully the boy, who is huge and strong, did not drop dad! An amazing miracle, in my opinion. They both escaped unscathed, one more time, and other than a bit of ache fr muscles not used often, they are both fine. Thanks for asking…he is an amazing fellow, my dad, and brings much joy and laughter to this household. My children are very lucky to have the opportunity to get to know him, I think, on such a personal level. hum? I am lucky to still have him hanging out…yep! lol :) :) :)

Okay Cap maybe he is not such a rube afterall but, I believe the definition of socialist snob fits his haughty foot perfectlly. Perhaps, ole Jeremiah “hater” Wright trained him well? Not that O’Nero was actually listening or anything? I know, I know I just had to go there right…

Comment by RussT PRO USA

Your right Cappy,
Obama’s not a rube but, he is a snob by defintion and a social elitist of sorts. He badmouths America to the world, has little or no respect for; Old Glory, the national Anthem, or the Pledge of Allegiance. Although he bows before Islamic royalty in the highest reverence and allegiance? Gotta love him, don’t we??? Quote HK and the Bumper sticker going around; “OBAMA – One Big Ass Mistake America”…

Yep, I’ll agree with that. But we had the chance to elect a truly humble and thoughtful originalist American who talks the talk and walks the walk of the Framers, Ron Paul, and the public rejected him almost out of hand and wanted a feel-good, give us hope socialist, so who’s fault is that?

Comment by Definitive

RussT,

The voting public and the latest polls would disagree with you.

Comment by DogOnCrack

cap, I would say that it’s primarily the fault of the public education system and Ron Paul obviously agrees with me.

Comment by DogOnCrack

Definitive, do you mean the voting public that have been brainwashed by the schools and the MSM?
Oblitheringbuffoon had more things working in his favor than any other candidate in history and still only won by a small margin.
Had the Republican party nominated a true conservative as opposed to a RINO, BO wouldn’t have stood a chance no matter how many tingles Chris Matthews got up his leg.

Hey DogOnCrack,

Great sight, made a bumper sticker look pale by comparison. Wish they would show it on the air, more people need to see how most people feel and not be afraid to express themselves. LOVED IT!!!!

DogOnCrack,

Wish she had a better running mate. She has, the guts to tell it like it is. If she had been able to pull it off for the Republicans, Chris Matthews would have had something other than tingles running down his leg!!!

I really don’t think we should have to do anything about N. Korea but we should be pushing Japan and other neighbors to take stern action. We only need to take action if no neighbors have the you know whats. But do it quickly and without regard.

One questions the integrity, intelligence, and credibility of an individual that cannot get one’s point across without name-calling and accusations.

A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and “lying in wait” opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday, killing three of them and turning a quiet Pittsburgh street into a battlefield, police said.

Police Chief Nate Harper said the motive for the shooting isn’t clear, but friends said the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

Comment by Definitive

Flip Saunders,

With the erosion of the middle class and jobs, you will see more of this. Blaming it on banning guns seems far fetched.

HK,

With respect to John McCain who served his country, he was another C student as President Obama’s predecessor. Sarah Palin might have had the “guts to tell it like it is” in your opinion, could not answer foreign policy questions; for example, you can see Russia from Alaska.

If not being conservative enough or gutsy was the game plan, the voters’ game plan was intelligence and change.

Palin bragged about passing a law regulating the nuclear industry that it turned out never became a law at all.

Some days Palin said Venezuela’s dictator Hugo Chavez should suffer “regional isolation” — but then on others she’d say she supported the president’s meeting with Chavez.

She told one audience about recent tornados in Kansas that had killed 10,000 people. In fact, a dozen people were killed in the tornados.

She referred to the “57 states” that make up the U.S.

Speaking of her eldest daughter’s pregnancy, she said Bristol was being “punished” with a baby.

As you probably know — or guessed by now — none of these gaffes were uttered by Palin. They are all Obama gaffes. Luckily, he made them to a star-struck press that managed not to ask him a difficult question for two years.

It seemed like the media would introduce an all-new double standard each day throughout the two glorious months of Palin’s candidacy.

But the press snapped right back into their anti-religious hysteria for a candidate who was a Pentecostal! The same media that couldn’t be bothered to investigate Obama’s ties to former Weathermen or Syrian Nationalist Tony Rezko was soon hot on the trail of a rumor that Palin’s church had a speaker 30 years ago who spoke in tongues!

Palin made some embarrassing gaffes.

She complained that we didn’t have enough “Arabic translators” in Afghanistan — not realizing the natives don’t speak Arabic in Afghanistan, but rather a variety of regional dialects, the most common of which is Pashtun.

Speaking to military veterans one time, Palin said, “Our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today.”

“you can see Russia from Alaska”
Tina Fey’s jokes are not Sarah Palin’s words.

Reversion to the failed socialist policies of the past constitutes neither intelligence nor change.
Do some homework on FDR and Carter.

Goodness, you’ll never find that I had anything positive to say about Bush! I think neither he nor Obama has a clue, nor care, what the Framers envisioned for this Republic, and for its people, and for the sharp limitations on government. I’m not certain Obama’s statements are as out of line as the pundits fulminatingly urge for their audience share, but I am increasingly disgusted by both the dems and the republicans, neither of which group understands our scheme nor are devoted to it.

North Korea fired a rocket over Japan on Sunday, defying Washington, Tokyo and others who suspect the launch was cover for a test of its long-range missile technology. President Barack Obama warned the move would further isolate the communist nation.

Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230 GMT) from the coastal launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean and U.S. governments said. The multistage rocket hurtled toward the Pacific, reaching Japanese airspace within seven minutes, but no debris appeared to hit its territory, officials in Tokyo said.

As a resident here in Johnson City, N.Y just a mile or so from Binghamton, we were all and still deeply shocked at the tragic events by a coward doing a cowardly act of terrorism on innocent citizens who were here to try and live better and free lives. But the media and press are like ticks on a hound, anything to break the story, who really don’t care about the victims or the community, they just show up and sell a tragic event. I would bet my life savings that in future broadcasts none of these high powered network news shows will give two thoughts to the victims or the community here in Binghamton. To put it best they were like vultures already trying to break a story, and see who got the best coverage, when peoples were already being shattered. Believe me this town is tough, strong, we will rebound and make a positive out of a bad horrific event. The person who did this will not and should not idolized for acting out a self indulging crazed act. Just because things do not go your way in life and you receive bad breaks gives no one the right to do this, ever, never!

A powerful earthquake struck central Italy early Monday, killing at least 20 people, collapsing buildings and leaving thousands of people homeless, officials and news reports said.

Officials said the death toll was likely to rise as rescue crews made their way through the debris. Firefighters aided by dogs were trying to rescue people from crumbled homes, including a student dormitory in the city of L’Aquila where half a dozen university students were believed trapped.

A gunman opened fire at a remote Korean Christian retreat center Tuesday night, leaving one person dead and at least three people injured, authorities said.

Authorities were first called to the rural area about 7 p.m. after receiving reports about a man shooting his wife, California Highway Patrol spokesman Mario Lopez said.

Hi Alyson,
I love you on the show and wish you were there during the week also. I do have a question about Brian Kilmeade. Is he married? The reason I ask is because he talks about his kids but never about his wife and years ago, E.D. Hill mentioned that Brian married his high school Sweetheart. Just curious.

The high-seas drama involving an American ship captain held hostage by Somali pirates entered its fourth day Saturday with both pirates and U.S. forces moving reinforcements to the scene off the Horn of Africa.

The pirates have threatened to kill Capt. Richard Phillips if the U.S. attacks them, according to a Somali who has been in contact with the pirates. On Friday, Phillips tried to swim for his freedom but was recaptured.

I have a comment about Tim Geithner’s willingness and desire to take over more businesses, if they are not performing up to certain standards. What about professional sports teams. They take from the poor and enrich the few (The owners, managers and players). If they underperform (some of them year after year) they still get bonuses!
Even underperforming teams have players who perform well. But just as in the case of AIG all should lose their bonuses even the top performers!
The Treasury (Turbo Tim) doesn’t know anything about running a professional sports team but that shouldn’t preclude the Whitehouse from ‘taking charge.’ If he can’t do it he should call in the president of General Motors, Obama.

The President told a Turkish audience that we are a “nation of ideals and values.” Doesn’t he remember that he said that ideals have no place in progress. “It is a false choice between science and idealology” as concerns stem cell research! Global warming is an idealogy and he is giving billions to the advancement of the cause.

The F&F crew keep talking about the St. Louis vs. Chicago pizza controversy. How about the mere fact that the President had people travel over 800 miles to make the him and his friends a pizza? These weekly parties on my dime are ticking me off.

Dear Fox & Friends,

I love you guys – watch the show nearly every day. Your humor is always welcomed but this morning it left me a bit bent out of shape. Honestly, your sarcasm towards the endurance test of dropping a car on a house was felt with a punch. It was a very appropriate test, considering an F5 tornado decimated the entire town of Greensburg, KS in May 2007. There were cars left in trees, on house tops, etc. That day, when it became evident that Greensburg’s would be a target, a well respected Sheriff from Kiowa County, heroically raced about rural areas to warn those who were not within siren distance. In his effort to save others, he himself became a victim. The massive tornado picked up his car, carried it several hundred yards before toppling it to the ground. The Sheriff and his car were found the next morning. He was alive, but unfortunately brain-dead. So you see, flying cars are a likely sight for those of us who live in tornado alley.

Remember, keep it informative, keep it light, but always keep it respectful.

Fan of Fox News,

Forget, for a moment, computer viruses and sophisticated cybercrimes. A hacksaw and a few other tools were probably all it took for someone to sever eight fiber-optic cables in Silicon Valley this week, knocking out cell phone, landline and Internet service.

The attack was a reminder of the fragility of the telecommunications networks that are increasingly important in our lives. Yet physical sabotage of the networks is extremely rare, and far overshadowed by natural disasters like hurricanes. Security experts were unable to recall a similar incident.

Cables were cut early Thursday in San Jose and nearby San Carlos, wiping out telecom service to tens of thousands of homes and businesses. Some people were still able to place local calls, but 911 service disappeared.
