Alisyn in the Greenroom

Jesse Jackson’s open mic

So here’s an interesting twist we’ve been batting around in the Greenroom this morning.  Rev. Jackson is no media novice, he knows his way around an open mic.  Is it possible that he didn’t mind his comments about Barack Obama being heard?  On the flip side, he did whisper it to the guest sitting next time him, so maybe it really was NOT for public consumption.  Is EVERYTHING that happens during a political campaign by design?  Or are we newscasters too cynical?  Yes, you can answer ALL OF THE ABOVE.

199 Responses to “Jesse Jackson’s open mic”

Comment by Marshall

Probably all of the above, but my initial reaction was that Jackson felt it was very important to plant an idea in the mind of the guy sitting next to him, which probably was financially motivated.

Comment by chas

Good morning Ms. Alisyn,

All of the above. ;)

Actually, Jackson has never been about anything but Jackson. He’s an angry and bitter racist who makes a living race baiting and demanding tribute from large companies.

He is now and has been for a long time, well, a has been.

Morning Ms. Audra.

I hope you ladies have a wonderful day.

Comment by Sean

It is really a non-event. BHO will (already has) “forgiven” Jessee. You will never get anyone on that side of the aisle to criticize Jackson for it, nor will you find anyone over there to acknowledge it was a fair criticism.

Finally, if a white person had said something to that effect he/she would likely be labaled racist by those same Jackson apologists.

Comment by Joe

I personally believe Sen. Obama’s success has marginalized a number of black leaders including Rev Jackson. His faith based ideas cut right into Rev. Jacksons income. Remember the only higher paid Reverand of our time was Rev. Moon. Although his comment sounded more like that of a Mafia Don then a man of God. Great question as usual. Be Well

Comment by Merle NY

Jesse Jackson is a corporate blackmailer. He is upset (mad) because Obama is the #1 star now. Jesse showed what he is made of. He calls himself a minister and makes such a crude comment? My opinion ….Jesse is a NUT!!!!!

I’m listening to Jack Reed and I would like one good example where sanctions worked.
Has it really worked in North Korea? Cuba? Iraq?

If Imus said something like that there would be riots in the streets. Strange world in which we live…..

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

I noticed that.

Comment by chas

Sean,

Sanctions don’t work for one simple reason. They tend to get used against tyrants, not democracies.

Since the sactions don’t really effect the life and wealth of those tyrants, only thier people, (and seriously do you think they care about their prople?), so of course it is only a gesture.

Since Senator Obama is not towing the party line according to Jesse, he is to be mocked!! Jesse is yesterday’s paper and he has to realize the world has changed since the 1960’s. Obama has every right to speak out like he did on Father’s Day “Any fool can make a baby!!” If Jesse doesn’t like it–Too bad!!!! Jesse needs to become a victor and quit being the eternal victim.

OTT – I thought it was awesome that FoxNews brought E.D. Hill back, saw her last night on the 5 o’clock show. She should get her old show at 2 pm back also.It was a kneejerk, purely political reaction that prompted Fox News to sideline her in the first place, which was clearly erroneous. These new Rev. Jackson comments put E.D.’s comments in a whole new and innocuous light by comparison.

Also, keep the heat coming Alisyn ;) you keep looking better and better. If you got it flaunt it Alisyn…and we all agree you got it :) .

Contrary to popular belief the Afro American community is not as united as many would believe. As you can see there is a generational rift developing between the old guard and the new. Jessie Jacksons claim to fame has always been his presence at the death of Martin Luther King. Obama is building a new power base that does not include people like Jackson. To add insult to injury many of Obama closest advisers are not drawn from the Afro American community.

Obama is big on symbolism and is co-opting the image and the mantle of Martin Luther King by accepting the nomination of the Democratic party on the anniversary date of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech” in front of 75 thousand people and Jackson is jealous. You can see that from his hot mike comments.

Alisyn everyone left me to go on a trip you know any way I can keep myself entertained? :-)

I LOVE IT!

Ahh, the “Party of the People”

Except “typical white people,” “angry bitter people hanging onto their guns and religions with antipathy for those that are not like them,” the people of Michigan and Florida and all the Billary voters tossed under the bus when the DNC “selected” the false messiah and kicked Bilary to the curb.

The brilliant strategic planning that bastardized the Dimocratic (that’s how I spell it) Primary process, in constant bickering and facade that is their “unity”, the great material for my blog (http://lmosworld.blogspot.com/).

I get misty from laughter.

And I am not giving the GOP a pass, but the Dimocrats have, in effect, been in charge since 2006………..hmmmmm, who shall I vote for, LOL :)

Good Morning Alisyn, Chas, Marshall and the rest of the morning group.

Rev. Jackson is a racist turd. You can polish it, paint it, purfume it up, but a turd is still a turd. If you don’t like BHO then have the stones to say you don’t like him. And really, like Jackson hasn’t been around long enough to keep his mouth shut while a camera is in front of him.

I sit in teleconferences all the time and I don’t care if that little red mute light is on or not, I keep my mouth shut!

And BHO forgiving him, saying he has a friendship with him that will get through this. Hey BHO, you want to be the leader of the biggest, baddest country in the free world? Act like you have a set and tell Jackson to pack sand! <—-Pack Sand was re-editted for morning television.

When Jackson was invited to the O’Riley Factor.

I almost feel bad for BHO. Between Jackson, Wright and Clinton, BHO is going to spend all his time in damage control mode and McCain is going to be able to sit on his couch, each chips, and watch the election from home.

Comment by Marshall

We need a good definition of “flip-flop.” To me it is when a person changes his positions to suit the latest trends in hopes of grabbing a few votes.

On the other hand, when one changes positions based on solid information and existing conditions, that is not a flip-flop. That is WISDOM!

Comment by Danny

Good morning Alisyn,

Probably “all the above”. Why do the Dem’s. and most media say it’s alright and let’s move on because Jackson said he was sorry and Senator “here’s what I think today” accepted the apology? What other choice did Obama have but to accept it? What would be the outcry this morning is a white Rev. had made that comment?

BTW, you do look marvelous today!

Comment by Matt West

Jesse said what he said to help Obama, It will make him look “not so radical” to the average white person!!!

Comment by Mike Malone

Maybe the Rev Jackson is a bit upset at the criticism of absenty fathers in the black communitee since he himself was caught a few years back having fathered a child out of wedlock and then basically ignoring any responsibility as the father of the child.
Or maybe he is mad at Obama for succeeding as a candidate where he failed. Or Jackson feels his run in the 80s made it possible for Obama to run now and not be discounted but that Obama isn’t giving Jackson any respect for that.

Personally I think Jackson has spent so much time in tv studios mic’ed up that he is used to it and didn’t give it a second thought. Familiarity breeds contempt. He was only whispering so other people in the room didn’t hear him.

I am wondering if this would be considered as much of a story if Jackson hadn’t included the comment about neutering Obama? Otherwise he was only making a private comment that he felt Obama is talking down to blacks. Throughout the primaries people were saying Obama had a superiority attitude and was talking down to voters.

Alisyn posed the question of if not sanctions, what should be done?

I’ve heard that trying to introduce western goods, capitalism and hopefully western culture. I don’t know if that would work w/ Iran, their culture would be tough to crack in that regard. One thing about Iran, they do not have an identity crisis. They know who they are and who they hate, Isreal, U.S. etc…..

Should we let Isreal handle them? I don’t know about that, such an action would likely put more of a strain on our military in the area and possibly undermine the improvements we and the Iraqi’s have made.

Do they not currently trade with China and Russia? Is there any leverage there?

Hi Alisyn, Great question this morning, I agree with all the above everyone is right on this morning!!! Good one about Brian, you are quick!!!!! As Mr. Jackson’s friend Oprah has quoted numerous times: “When someone shows you a window into themselves, believe it.”. This was no mistake, his apology sounds empty and everything that Marshall has said is right on. Mr. Jackson is as two-faced as they come and thanks to Fox News, we all got to see it!!:)

Comment by Marshall

Luis – I must not have made my definition of flip-flop clear. It is clear that Obama’s positions are changing daily based upon the latest polls. I see that as flip-flopping.

McCain changed his position on drilling because it is the wise thing to do at this point in time. I see that as a wise move with a solid foundation of knowledge.

We don’t want a leader that is so invariable that he/she can’t change, but we do want someone with a solid core rooted in a fundamental respect and love of this country.

The thing about Jackson is if Obama gets elected guys like Jackson and Sharpton become irrelevant. They won’t have the leverage they so need to control and muscle their way through the political landscape. IMO anyway.

Good morning Alysin,

Way back…maybe even before the wheel was invented..I remember watching Jesse Jackson on TV. He was addressing a group of young people. One of the first things he said was something similar to “take off your hats and show some respect”. He gave a fine speech about becoming a good example for his race. I was very impressed. This myabe have been the early 1970’s.

I am sure things slip out that are NOT intended for the media but these are probably the minority.

Happy Birthday to PAT in Minnesota. I hope you have some time to do something you really enjoy today. Celebrate the day to the fullest.

Good morning Alysin,

Nicely put Chas…and I agree, of course, and it is sad that the reverend Jesse decided this course isn’t it? And the Al, has followed right behind…too toooooo sad.
Good morning Sean and Luis and Marshall, and alllllll the smart fans on this most wonderful place to be. My day off!!! And the third “anniversary” of the ankle and the wheely chair event, that introduced me to the land of blogging. For those who “followed” that event, the ankle is healing, or so the “nurse practitioner” assured me, anyway. Of course, being a military brat, I certainly recognize “clinic” medicine, and continue to wonder why one pays premium prices to NOT SEE THE DOCTOR??? Hummm…seems a little bit of a scam? Yes, I think so, for sure. To further agitate the situation, the “doctor” was unable to address the arm issue, as “that would be separate from”, so would need a different appointment. Not to worry though…no exam was given regarding the arm, BUT, the “nurse practitioner” told me it was “probably” my neck, and gave me a PAMPHLET. There was absolutely no necessity to go to the office for this appointment. Could have done the whole of it over the phone while floating in the pool!!!!!! I am furious, and I think citizens should be outraged by the high handed behavior of this community. I AM totally covered by insurance, and this IS ridiculous.
The judge is on and I do love the judge. We continue to be amazed by the jr senator from Illinois, and his “supporters”. Just whose side are these people on anyway? One must wonder for sure. We continue to wait for the convention to see who the dems actually appoint to represent them in this election.
In the mean time…it is MY BIRTHDAY!!! and I am off to start the celebration today. Swimming and playing all day with friends. NO t.v. to interfere with the festive mood…lots of laughing and swimming, ending with a concert down town, by the river, this evening. It is a beautiful day here in Ohio, in this beautiful country we are privileged to be citizens of. Don’t forget to smile, smile and smile again.
Have a wonderful day everyone, and Alysin…thanks again for this most wonderful place to be. :)

Hi Alisyn,

I think if we could hear what many of our leaders and public figures say behind closed doors, or their true thoughts, the Nation would be crestfallen. The faux civility and what passes for principles in Washington have become cartoonish. I’m not a Jackson fan, but it’s telling that he feels strong enough rergarding Obama’s shape shifting lately to be overheard. So much for Secretary of the Interior Jesse!

By the way Ali, I posted a comment yesterday which did not make it, probably a wi-fi bump here. Also I slammed Barry Bonds pretty hard. I ended the post with the words below which may be against the rules, I hope not. I was responding to what i would do with 4 years left to live till 2012:

I would tell my girlfriend Suzanne that she is the air that I breathe, and that even the end of the world could not dim my eternal love for her. I would tell her she has rescured me from quiet anonymity, and is the woman I prayed for even as a child. I would ask her to Marry me, and if she sees this, she can take this as the first of a thousand ways I will offer her my heart on bended knee.

Thanks Ali, Fox Rox

Come on, does anybody really think the Rev meant such a thing, and after his apology, does anybody really think Obama’s campaign didn’t fully forgive and forget?
Does anybody really believe there is chaos among the Bro’s? Surely nobody thinks “anything” goes as long as we elect Obama. I’m Sure nobody would even think that the Rev is working on perhaps a Cabinet spot, Imagine the racist’s making such a claim in such a hypnotic state.

If I had a perfect answer I’d rule this planet and you’d be my personal assistant…lol ;)

The obvious answer don’t allow tyrants. But no one has the guts to follow through on that one. So until we can get rid of tyrants we will be forced to wimper and cry with the UN, (United Nitwits), and pas yet another one.

In the words of Thomas Jefferson; “Rebellion to Tyrants is obedience to God.”.

Sharpton got the worse of the other guest, his name escapes me.

Anyway, the other guest said (I am paraphrasing) that when the Republican were talking about family values, being good fathers, etc…. Rev Sharpton, Jackson, and the black community were up in arms, offended, etc…..

But now that a black person is saying that, it is ok. (Although, was it ok when Bill Cosby said it? )

That is hypocritical.

And when we two, old and gray, review our lives, our children, grand children, I will propose again, and pray for her millionth yes.

She will see it sometime today after work, I’m glad I can share it with my Fox Friends, I’m King of the World!!

Why does the ASS keep getting shorter? Whoever is in charge is calling an end to it too soon. The conversations are just getting good and up pops the monkey to end the show.

Only 5 minutes today. Wasn’t the ASS to be 10 or more minutes? It is lots of fun but it is getting to be so short it is hardly worth the effort sometimes.

Don’t set the bar too high at the beginning with the “romantic” junk. You will constantly be trying to outdo yourself. That stuff takes a lot of work and you will run out of ideas eventually. Not a good situation to be in. Think about that.

What he says on mic and off mic is not worth the time he uses on the news

Dear Alisyn…I think Jesse Jackson’s own words provide great insight and hold a tremendous message for all of those in, and seeking, the public eye…

“No matter what level of celebrity, no matter what amount of personal wealth, and no matter what degree of professional accomplishment, [those] individuals portray a facade of propriety while living as if they exist on the street.”

I understand now why Dr. Martin Luther King said he distrusted Jesse Jackson.

Ah Sir Knight…me thinks you are correct regarding our Deloris. At the least anyway, and her smiley lines are in very great jeopardy me thinks?? Yes, of that I am sure. A shame too, as this remains a most wonderful place to be, and she should be enjoying herself. However, the “hate” word has popped up in her comment, so we know she has some problems. Deloris…you know the man personally then? Jesse that would be, so you HATE him? Or is it that you dislike his politics, and your acquaintance with the MAN is so close, you also HATE him…I am confused. My usual state though, so no surprise. A personal observation on my part, personally sent to you, as you apparently wish to engage personally?? Consider yourself now a part of the personal part of this most wonderful place to be, and welcome!

Comment by Kevin Tipton

Jesse Jackson is a phony. He didn’t used to be long, long ago. He’s a “reverend” in name only. I was raised by a minister and the comment Jesse made is just disgusting and not Christian. Here’s a man who fathered a child out of wedlock while mentoring Bill Cinton during the Lewinsky affair. I can’t believe anyone would follow this dishonest disgrace to preachers everywhere.

If Barack Obama wins the presidency, people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton won’t have anything to spew venom about anymore! I believe they really don’t want him to win because he would negate their existence.

Thank you Ms. Liz. I consider that the highest praise.

Comment by Barry

Alisyn,
Are you not allowed to comment on the controversial issues?

Reading through the blogs it seems there is an agrement that had a republican white man said what the racist JJ said, there would be such an uproar. If the “media” would ignore JJ he would go away. Say for instance BHO were to be elected, JJ and racist Al Shaprton would be have to give up their “civil rights” issues because a black would have achieved the highest office in the land without affirmative action. I guess they could still find a “white” company to sue or blackmail.

Have a nice day.

Comment by Carlos Martinez

Hi Alisyn and all my other insightful bloggers,
Jesse Jackson? Wow, is he new to this game? Has he not been in the medias eye for so long that he would know and realize that what he was doing might be recorded? They were sitting in a newsroom ready to be interviewed correct? I mean, they were listening to this conversation that took place in a bathroom or closest right?
Jesse Jackson is a walking contridiction and his remarks should be displayed for all. I think he meant what he said or he wouldn’t have said it. He wanted to “cut his nuts off”…………..and this is their (Afro-Americans) spokesman?
His words should be taken to heart and his apology recognized for what it is, an attempt to try and defuse the fallout from his idiotic comments. I can’t believe this guy walked with the great Martin Luther King

Comment by Linda

I don’t know any man or woman of the cloth that uses language like Jesse Jackson did referring
to Obama. Its’ disgraceful.

I find that most offensive of all. He should be stripped of the title “Reverend”.

Comment by Randi Petrich

Hi Alisyn and fellow bloggers, I have a feeling Jackson lost his marbles there, but am so happy that we all know now how he really feels.I feel bad for his son, working for Obama & having a goof of a Father. Also, did Obama have a choice in accepting the apology? If he wouldn’t have, then this would have blown up to God knows what. Have a great day!

Comment by chas

Has anyone considered that it was planned?

Think about it, Obama takes a shift to the right on Iraq, people start talking about that. Then along comes Jackson and now no one has anything to say about Obama.

And i don’t believe that this is the first time this has happened.

Jesse is only for Jesse. Grreat to see E.D. Hill back. We love you too, Alisyn.

Comment by A.M.

Jesse’s been in the public eye for decades and like Alisyn said, he knows his way around a mic. He also has been manipulating the media for just as many decades. So, how in the world could he let this bone-head slip-up happen? Or, was it actually Jesse’s genius at work here again?

All the pundits seem to be in agreement that Jesse’s remarks will help Barrack because the public will look at them as a cheap shot. And we all know the American people will always take the side of the ill-treated. Also, did you notice how quickly Barrack so “graciously” accepted Jesse’s apology? That too works in Barrack’s favor.

But of course you now have to ask the question, how could Jesse (the canny manipulator of the media that he is) make such a mistake, (to embarrass himself that way?) I don’t believe it was a mistake at all. It was brilliant on his part. He wanted those remarks heard.

Here’s why I believe so:

He obtained sympathy (especially from white middle class American’s. The vote he needs most to garner to win) for Barrack and at the same time put himself back in the public eye as the “Great Champion of African Americans”. Whether misguided or not, it doesn’t matter. The African American community will see it as him standing up for them. It’s a win/win.

Wait and Watch how this all plays out. I’ll bet the MSM will soon be reporting on how sympathetic the American public is for Barrack on this matter, and yet at the same time reporting on how the African American community can understand why Jesse said those things.

Brilliant, Jesse, Brilliant! Or, am I just over-thinking this, and Jesse is simply turning into an idiot in his old age??

Note to Mike M. from a few threads back: No dice :-)

Comment by Tab

When the lady reporter said the only way to beat Tiger Woods would be for the rest of the pros to take him out and lynch him, Jackson and the rest of the “equal rights, self proclaimed non-racist” individuals wanted her head on a platter and for her career to be destroyed. Where are the people now. Why aren’t all of these self righteous individuals and their followers not calling for Jacksons immediate dismissal. Why aren’t they calling him racist, insinsitive, out of touch, etc. etc. etc.? Why aren’t you people marching on Washington calling for his head? Oh, I get it. He’s black.

Comment by Marshall

Obama would no more denounce Jackson than he would denounce his own white grandmother…….. Until it becomes to his advantage to do so.

Comment by Luis

Marshall,

I could not have said that better myself……….or could I? :) LOL

Comment by Sara

I think that much of the African American and progressive communities will increasingly feel less enamored by Mr. Obama. He very clearly and quite effectively used the African American Church and progressive movement to win the Democratic primary; and now he is heading to the center but quick. While a 90% Black vote was sufficient to crush Senator Clinton throughout the South and Southeast among Democratic primary voters; the demographics are crazy different in the general election in those Red States. Obama now needs moderates and white down scale voters something fierce, so to the center he goes. The Jackson dustup helps Obama with the voters he now wants to attract – he looks less liberal. The question is whether the youth vote and Black vote will turn out in enormous numbers if Obama appears to be betraying progressive values. It all will be quite interesting. At this point, Obama has received a free ride with little challenge from the press or his “core” constituencies. He should be tested – it is good for everyone. Bill Clinton will be proven right about Mr. Obama in the long haul, I believe. The Obama campaign has a real fantasy feel to it. It needs to find roots in the real world where politics is supposed to be about tough debates and differences. You can’t please all the people all the time.

Jesse Jackson is no better than Al Sharpton and all those others supposedly civil rights leaders, they all racists themselves, and all they care about is causing controversy and stirring up peoples emotions by doing these outrageous things.

BHO is not different than Jackson or Sharpton. He is like a revamped version, for the next generation of Anti Americans. Its sickening when you think about it.

Comment by Brad

Hey Sean-

I totally agree with what you said about that crazy person who works over at that liberal left leaning network(which i wont mention) and is at the same time slot at Bill OReilly. That is precisely the reason that network is taking a nosedive in the ratings. All the liberal person does is shoot off nasty comments about mundane ideas that dont even make sense.

Bill OReilly show is the very best, quality journalism at its finest. And that is why FNC is number one :)

Comment by Brad

Marshall-

I saw that report about BHO’s family on Access Hollywood or one of those entertainment shows. I dont really want to know why BHO is having second thoughts about that interview. And i dont i would go that far and compliment his family or anyone associated with this guy. He is a true enigma and Anti American.

Those programs are so liberal, all they have been recently is ranting and raving about how this BHO is going to win the election. I basically just stay with FNC and tune out the rest.

I thought what he said was just too funny. When you are not “on the air” and talking like he was, he was telling it like he feels. He should be a man and just say he meant it instead of trying to make excuses. Unless he is afraid of Obama or his crazy followers.

Some folks will say anything to keep their name in the 24 Hour News Cycle. Now look at how many time JJ will be on TV just to explain his comments, and whatever else he wants to talk about. Your probably right, it may not have been a slip, but who knows? In 24 hours we will be into another news story and all will be a distant memory.

He should be ashamed of himself. He should know better being in the public eye to keep his comments to himself with the threat of potential “Hot Mics”. And he calls himself a Rev. Rev’s do not make comments like that about ANYONE. Oh yes……they always seem to apologize later when they get caught. Too late.

I have an idea, flip flopping is when a liberal candidate like BHO changes his position just so people can vote for him. John McCain on the other hand, is just exploring his views on the world. You have to remember, he wants to be the peoples president. There is a huge difference there.

Good Morning

Jesse Jackson and David Duke should move to California and marry each other. They are the perfect match!

Comment by Tibor Solymosi

Why in the world would Jackson want these comments heard? He is all about self-promo but his comments could not help him under any scenario. The sad thing is that everyone on Fox really relished his error. The way Fox handled this underscores the growing lack of professionalism that exists on the show. Professionals (or just simple human beings with some manners) would have ignored it and erased it and let Mr. Jackson know that it happened (that is what “friends” would have done). He, just like you or I , would have appreciated it. Instead, Fox jumped on it and discussed it adnauseum. The Judges suggestion that Jackson’s had gesture looked like he was going to do it was ludicrous. We all say things that we would not want repeated on the National News. I am no fan of Mr. Jackson whatsoever, but what Fox did was simply discourteous to Jackson. But I guess that that has become the way of the world – or maybe I have been watching too much of Fox and the cynicism is wearing off on me. Maybe Fox should drop the r and call it “Fox and Fiends.”

I want you to know that I still think you are wonderful.

Alisyn this was one of my comments,
Chas your right on it was planned, by the Obama campaign all the way,
so we cant say the black community is united behind Obama, and the only reason they are voting for him is because he is black, other then that, its the only reason because he has no experience what so ever to hold the job of the Presidency.

that whole thing was a set up on Fox. And if they are going to give a story then they should tell the whole story not show us half. And then tell everybody
there is more that they are not going to report.

Look – this is the problem with Obama’s ‘fake’ campaign based upon change. When we tries to run to the right, people like Jesse Jackson wan tto cut his ____ off. This is his doing, his fault. You can’t be a candidate of change, then go about business the same way every other politician does. I don’t care how smart, charismatic, or engaging you are. Eventually, people see you for who you are.
BTW – we launched a site aimed to expose the Obama campaign of hate and intimidation, check it out at:

You dont have to hold the shift key down if you dont want to make his name capitalized. We just want to show what BHO’S real name really is, Barrack Hussein Obama Jr. Can you imagine him as possibily our next commander in chief, with a name like that? Our country is going to be in more danger than it already is, especially with his ideas about face to face talks with Iran and other terrorist organizations.

I am guessing Greg Jarrett is going to permanently be in the 4pm news slot with Julie Banderas. I remember him from his Court TV days. Great memories.
