Homeschoolers Unite

Hope you all had a nice holiday weekend and managed to remember our servicemen and women in some special way. Nice to be back. Running around after three toddlers makes for a fun weekend, though not the most relaxing. Speaking of toddlers, sorry about that baby crying during our 6:45 segment on Homeschoolers. Man, I feel their pain. It never fails — a baby is quiet during the commercial, then wham, the camera light goes on and the wailing begins!

If any of you are homeschooling parents, I’d like to hear your thoughts on Subway excluding you from their contest that would award cash prizes for the best essay written by an elementary school student. Subway’s argument is that the $5000 dollars is supposed to go to for sports equipment to the athletic department of a school, which arguably, homeschooled kids don’t need.

And, on a related note, HOW DO YOU DO IT?? I’m in awe of people who take on their child’s education all themselves, beyond all the regular responsibilities of parenting.

For the rest of you, do you think Subway is acting fairly? Do you think the homeschoolers boycott will make a dent?

Good Morning all -

Subway should be able to give their money to who they want - however, if you disagree don’t go there. Same with actors who want to get political - ok - but if I disagree I won’t go to your stuff any more. Look at the Dixie Chicks, even Oprah - so look out Subway. It’s time for consumers to make these kinds of stands.

Good morning Ms. Alisyn,

We sure missed you while you were gone, but I’m glad you had a nice long weekend.

My kids weren’t home schooled but their Mother was home all through their pre-school years. Both were far ahead of the learning curve when they started school as a result.

I don’t understand why Subway would want to give the company such a negative by-line. Perhaps they feel it will not effect their bottom line.

You have a great day Ma’am and welcome back.

I don’t understand this whole Dick Morris thing with Fox. The guy is so bias against Hillary that he comes across kind of obsessive and vindictive. The RFK blurb is much ado about nothing.

Jimmy Carter is starting to worry me. Does he want to start a war?

Good morning Alysin..Good morning to all. Must obama here in a sec, but must comment on this absolutely. I do intend to contact the corp offices regarding this huge mistake on the part of subway, and will not buy from them also, in concert with the home schooling community. Some one did not do their homework for sure. The home schooling community has athletic programs in place for their community just like the public schools do, so they need the money always. The home school community is growing like a weed, as the public continues to fail our children. Big huge mistake by subway, and I hope they feel it big time!!!! My grandchildren are home schooled, and this is ridiculous!!!!!! :) Must dash and obama, as the clock has hit the moment of. My first day back at work for about eight weeks, so the expressway will be one of the challenges of the day!!!! Have fun w/o me…:(:( Aleve and cell in hand…must dash! :):)

Alisyn,
First of all I am a homeschooling mom. I knew all about this boycott. Trust me it will be big, Subway serves healthy food right now for fairly cheap ($5.00 foot long). I am a member of two homeschooling groups, the news made it to both of them days ago. From Conroe and Tomball to Salado and Waco, this boycott is in action. Some are writing the franchise owners, not sure why but some feel the owners have influence. What I did not hear from your segment, and it might have been said so I could be wrong is that last year’s winner was a homeschooler. It was essay based, and some homeschoolers have excellent writing talents. What the problem truly with Subway is once they had a homeschooler win then they changed their mind. Which is not the best PR move. Also they include private, pararichole and public schools. (We consider ourselves a private school.)But they then say no homeschoolers, which for many is a big offense. In Texas we can’t use the facilities but many get together and play sports, train and exercise. If Subway would have said “if homeschooling the equipment needs to be donated for public use or a school” there would have been no boycott!

Subway slapped in the face the millions of homeschooling parents. We are used to it, it happens everyday. But this something that could have been better handled. Especially since the winner last year could have written a better release than Subway did!

How do I do it? I have to, I have no other choice. I did not start out this way, but since my son was not taught in public school I refuse to let him wallow in ignorance of several disabilities. He is happier now that he is learning. My Hubby works shiftwork and does much of his math help, I focus on reading and language. My son is a natural curious child his science and social studies he does on his own. I checked his science level and he is above level. Reading will be and has been his biggest struggle, he is dyslexic. His plan is to attend public high school, I am unsure if he can get there academically but we are trying. Right now he is going into 6th grade. I have three sons and he is the only homeschooler. From what I know now my oldest would have had much more opportunities for collleges if he were homeschooled. Our local school has zip for math teachers and he is paying the price. He will do okay but it would have been better had he been taught by the best.

God love that baby BTW, we have all been there. And this will be a moment they will treasure later!

Kathy, thank you for sharing your experience with homeschooling your son. Our hats are off to you.

Hey Alisyn, you’ve got to stop coming on to Kilmeade. It’s more than a little uncomfortable…

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

I haven’t noticed any discomfort on his part.

Comment by pogger

The answer is simple…let the home schooled children compete for the money and if they win they can donate the equipment bought with it to their favorite local school. That gives the homes Schooler’s good publicity and a legitimate claim to use that same equipment or participate in sports at local public schools. Subway has been making one major gaffe after the other lately if I was the CEO of the company I would a little less about being politically correct and a little more about the bottom line (Profit of the company)

Thank heaven the Holidays are over….we missed you Alisyn. You are our morning smile.

Good Morning Alisyn,

WOW! What a weekend. I told you once that I live about 15 miles from where Gretchen grew up in Anoka, MN. The tornado’s that came through Coon Rapids and Hugo, MN on Sunday were about 1/2 way between my home and Anoka. A lot of damage around here, but we obviously missed the worst of it.
Gretchen probably knows by now, Anoka came through ok too.

I am not a homeschooling parent, but I feel Subway is wrong. Most homeschoolers, as to what the Judge had said, use school athletic facilities and equipment. Why can’t these homeschoolers be apart of this sweepstakes and if they win, they would be obligated to give the money to the school they are able to use for their athletic resources or a school of their choice. This way they personally will not get the money, but rather it still goes to a school.

Good morning and you spent a wonderful time with your family I am guessing. When you have young children the days are long and the years are short.

I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of Homeschool families. The vast majority of them are just wonderful. The parents can be a little demanding–especially the Moms. I think that is from fighting for a long time to be able to educate their children the way they want to. We see many of them were I work. We even have Homeschool children participating at our workplace. They are so smart, bright and delightful. The future is safe when I see these children.

In our area we have a large network of families. They have their own spelling bee which is held in the public library. The winner of this can go on to compete with the winner from the schools. They go many group activities so their children are well socialized.

Subway probably does not realize how well connected some of these groups are. They could donate the money to their group for a field trip fund or something along that order. In my opinion, the reason these things happen is that people are just not informed. There is no malice-just misinformation.

If all the homeschool and privately educated families put their children back into the public schools, new ones would have to be built overnight and chaos would occur.

Subway should be ashamed of their exclusion of home schooled children from their contest. Is it because, traditionally, home schooled children are from religious families and this is contrary to their corporate image?

Our office is located next to a center that has a Subway frequently visited by our lunch crowd. I will be sure to advise them of Subway’s decision and let them make their decision if they want to continue to support their establishment.

Alysin,

I just had to respond to the article that Brian and friends reported this morning about the young lady that is going to be removed from the boys’ basketball team. The very same thing happened here in Pittsburg about 8 years ago-the sport was soccer. The boys and girls played together on one team. They were 10 years old. They had a terrific, winning team and a fabulous coach (one of the girls’ mother!) and were having a FUN. (Imagine, fun on a childhood team where a parent was coaching!) Some of the parents of the boys pushed to separate the teams into a boys team and a girls team and they made a huge stink-similiar arguments that were reported to remove the young lady from the basketball team. Long story shortened only slightly, the boys and girls were separated, the girls went on to win everything-including the state high school championship two years in a row, half the girls on the team had full ride scholarships to D-1 schools to play soccer. The boys, well they never did much. By the time they were in 10th grade, over half had quit soccer, no division championships were won, let alone a state championship, and no scholarships awarded. Wow. What do you think we taught those kids that year???

Anyway, thought you might like to know. . .

Good Morning Alisyn!

So nice to have your smiling face back gracing our television screens this morning.
Chasing three toddlers over the weekend or putting up with Steve and Brian, which is the more tiring? :)

I think it was a bad move by Subway to exclude homeschoolers but they exclude me from winning it because I am not an elementary school kid. All contests exclude some people from winning.
I wonder if Subway will announce the winner of their contest or sit on the news, like F&F has about the winner of the big contest. I think there was an F&F contest for the fans of the show. Hard to recall now that it was so long ago with no word after it ended.

Will someone call PETA and the ASPCA and alert them to the media’s beating of the dead horse that was the Hillary RFK comment? If the media was not so determined to drive Hillary out of the race and crown Obama this would not have been a story more than one news cycle.

Note from Bill Samon’s interview this morning, Bill Clinton ran against Bob Dole on 1996, not ‘92. In 1992 it was George H.W. Bush.

The question of what happens to Hillary when she returns to the Senate now was raised this morning. Why was no discussion made that either Obama or McCain will have the same fate. Both of them are Senators also and one will be returning when they loose the race. Or is this just more of the media’s piling on Hillary?

Good Morning,

Subway has made a big mistake. Homeschool families need physical education opportunities, too!
Most public schools do NOT allow homeschoolers to participate in their physical education opportunities,
even though we PAY TAXES to support their programs and constantly buy things from kids who are doing fundraising for their schools and their sports programs. Most homeschoolers use private recreation facilities and private sports teams. What is wrong with the winner donating the money to a local recreation center where they have their physical education activites?
Homeschoolers unite, go to QUIZNOS!!

Morning Alisyn!

I think Subway can run any contest anyway they want. They are foolish to leave a group out but that is their choice.

Why did they bring their kids or not have a sitter ready to help out? It was most distracting and took from their point. What a shame. I would have liked to hear what they had to say.

I agree Steve’s “shut-up” line was harsh. I wanted the kid to shut-up but it sounded harsh! LOL

Brian is 100% right. Girls and Boys are different. While some girls can compete with boys that only lasts a few years then the boys get too big and agressive. I would hate to see the sports “watered down” because there are girls on the team. They need to be kept seperate. An old agrument that needs to go away for good!

Keep up the good work - you are doing a great job Alisyn!

We homeschooled for 10 years, basically because our school here in our Ky. county was only scoring 49th percentile in the state. We weren’t able to move at the time, so that’s what we chose to do. Now we’ve moved and are in a good scoring county, so have decided to use the public school system.

How do you do it? With determination, commitment, stamina, patience and lots of prayer.
It’s not easy, but worth it. Our kids are doing great in public high school. They were ahead of where they needed to be when entering.

Now about Subway, it won’t be a surprise to any homeschooler that Subway decided to make such a rule. They’ll be used to it because they are always excluded because of their “different” choice. But, they won’t lay down without a fight either.

Who knows…boycotts have worked in the past to obama people’s mind about rules….I will stay away for now and support the homeschoolers.

Has Steve never heard a crying baby before? Grief, how embarrassing for him.

Home schooling is a great advantage in educating you child if you have someone that can afford to stay home and do it. Subway, they should fire the PR person that came up with this one. LOL…for what? 5000 dollars, wow!..I wonder where the morons mind was that figures its ok to cost the company, potentially, 100s of thousands in lost revenue just because of the lack of imagination of some PR loser. Like the other comments posted. They could have donated to their favorite public facility. If you dont want your child to be more of a social experiment by losers on the left the home schooling is definitely worth your time. I’m sure of one thing, if your child is in public school and doing above average in standardized testing, you are probably doing alot of home schooling anyway as a parent. Public schools for the most part are a hidious failure ridden social experiment that has robbed and dumbed down the children in our country. I have two sisters and both teach in public schools. By this I know its not most of the teachers fault but the system set in place by left wing socialist, is failing our children miserably. Home schooling has been demonized by leftist media and made it sound as if they are some kind of undesirable, anti-social, dangerous cult that doesnt deserve to recognized as a legitimate educational tool. I will NOT be eating at (Sub) way ..again!!!

Subway is not the first to exclude homeschooled children from essay contest, Oprah did it last year I believe. Sadly they probably will not be the last. Next thing you know they will be excluding them from the National Spelling Bee because they have won too many times.

There are a large number of homeschool coalitions that operate a community use buildings and sports organizatons for just this reason. This is huge in Shelby County, Tennessee.

Yes, Subway is in the wrong . . . out of lack of knowledge I’m sure.

I eat at Subway frequently, as do a large number of homeschoolers who care about not only their childs education but their nutrition. But I believe they (homeschoolers) should make their point at the local stores where the loss of the customer base will be felt the strongest and where they can educate Subway from the grassroot locales as to why Subway isn’t seeing the bigger picture.
Best regards!

While driving to work this morning and thinking about this world in which we live, I had a couple of ideas. Watching the Mars landing over the weekend caused me to remember the early days of the space program and how so many brilliant minds were brought together to solve the problems that might inhibit space travel. Look how far we have now come!

During WW II, the Manhattan Project brought together American, British, Canadian, and refugee European scientists. Presented them with the problem, gave them a goal and the means to achieve their objective. Mission accomplished!

Now we are faced with an energy crisis that has made us more and more dependant upon less than friendly countries and our whole economy can be shaken unmercifully by those entities. Is it not time for the U.S. to bring together another group of great scientific minds and give them a clear objective of energy independence? We can’t just continue to complain about the situation without taking aggressive measures to find solutions!!!!!!

Subway has every right to award the prize as they see fit. There was a case a while back where a homescooled child’s parents sued to have their child participate in school sports programs. They won. So I say, if a homeschool child wins, the prize should be awarded to the school that child would be attending if they were not homeschooled.

And what’s with this homeschooling anyway? How are kids to learn interaction with others if they are sheltered away from thier peers?

Comment by Guy at Large

Welcome back, Alisyn. Having kids of my own, I know going back to work after a long weekend can actually be a restful experience. lol…

In regards to your question of the day; homeschooling has a number of positive aspects but there are also consequences. I homeschooled my second oldest for the first couple of years of her education. (My work schedule changed, which is why I had to stop.) I loved it. And I think it gave her a great jump on her classmates when she entered the public school system’s, third grade. She has had straight A’s ever since (now she’s in high school).

If I had homeschooled my daughter for any reason other than out of unconditional desire then I would have never done it. I am not sure what homeschooling parents want out of the system other than material gain; if its not $50,000 for one thing it seems to be $5,000 from another. All of a sudden homeschooling parents have become some sort of lobby or union. What’s that about?

At what point does the care and education of your child become an employment opportunity? Isn’t parenting and all of its responsibilities something we do unconditionally? Why does an outside entity need to pay me to read a bedtime story or spend quality time with my child?

There are things that are mandatory, like getting to and from work everyday, that I could use some help on. Like reduced bus pass prices or gas coupons or carpool tax credits. How about the power/utility bill. It costs me between $300 and $500 per month to keep my home heated and/or cooled. And it is mandatory that I have the city supply power, water and garbage. I can’t build a fire in my livingroom, or drill for a well, or put my trash in the neighbor’s yard. Not that I would want to. (Well, okay, I’ll admit the trash thing. lol… Just kidding.)

My point is, the things we do voluntarily have consequences that we already know about or learn as we go. And we seem to be doing more complaining about our “choices” than we do about those things we don’t have any say in.

Why don’t stores offer non-parenting couples “no more back to school sale” sales? Why can’t I buy a Happy Meal because “I/me/moi” want the toy?! Why can’t I order off Denny’s kid’s menu?! Why does it cost me more to eat healthy than it does to eat junk food? And this has always tripped me up; it costs me more money to help save the environment than it does to destroy it. Where’s the public voice when it comes to that?!

If you want to homeschool your child(ren), cool. More power to you. But you have to know, going in, there are negatives to it. Deal with them and move on. Or… Get your kids into public school.

Whew… Okay, I’ll go sit down now.

We just celebrated the high school graduation of our daughter, Victoria, who was home schooled for all 12 years. Yes, it was a struggle at times and our decision resulted in less available finances but it was well worth it. My daughter had her graduation ceremony with two other girls and each of the fathers made a talk.

Afterwards, more than one parent came to us and said they were so impressed by the ceremony and the three girls that they are now considering home schooling their children.

And, yes, we will be boycotting Subway.

Comment by Brian

So home schooled kids want to be included in contest directed at public school kids but don’t want to attend public schools? You can’t have it both ways. If you think that not going to Subway for a delicious sub is going to make you feel like you are taking a stand then don’t go. Do you actually think Subway will care?

If Subway bothered to check they would find now that many homeschoolers have groups where homeschooling parents bring their kids to participate in sports, field trips, and other social activities. I know, I coached a homeschool basketball team a few years ago. Subway’s excuse is lame, and if that is their reasoning they should have just abandoned the contest rather than alienating millions of people. Normally I eat there 2-3 times a week, and very much enjoy it, but will not in the future until this is resolved. This is a huge PR loser for Subway! Even if it is true that some homeschoolers

Comment by BeckyB

Hi Alisyn,

I think in terms of a PR move (which most of these competitions are anyways), Subway made a poor choice. A) It’s $5000, which is peanuts to them; B) they angered an entire community; and C) they get to choose who wins the award anyways, so all this rule really accomplishes is angering a community, which according to this ebooks guide numbers over a million kids…

Ali,

My daughter in Kansas City home schools her girls and gets help from local Home School groups which can help with class material!

As you have repeatly heard, home schoolers in many cases get better scores on tests and do better in college! Here in Arizona, the state has a program where home schoolers can connect on line and have books to assist in their schooling which is important since schools here can hardly teach reading and writing.

Have not heard about Subway and since by the time I get up in morning you are off air. However, if Subway was really wanting to appeal to all, they would also offer something to home schoolers, like assist with class material and such.

America has got to come to the correct consulition, that public schools are in many areas failing our children, and parents need to take the lead to fix, both at home and in elections across the country!

This is the first time I have ever written. We watch Fox news constantly and love everyone of you folks.
All my grandchildren are homeschooled and boy am I happy. In Maryland my daughter in law has to go have their work checked at the end of the school year. The person in charge said the first grader could probably skip a year and the 4th and 6th grader are doing great. They have so many more advantages being homeschooled. They are taught academic subjects instead of a political agenda and other subjects that we as a family do not agree with. They are made to go outside and play everyday. Our grandson in Oklahoma is homeschooled along with his brother and sister. A supermarket in their area hires homeschooled children for part time work. They all take music lessons, art projects and get together with other homeschooler for trips, sports, science classes. They are very well socialized. I thank God everyday that both my daughters-in-law are willing to take on this gigantic task. i am so surprised at the vocabulary that they use and the intelligence that they display about so many subjects. God bless all the parents who are willing to put their children first and God bless all the parents who would like to homeschool but just aren’t able. Janice- Subway has lost my business.

I guess the home schoolers that FOX had on this morning do not have manners and ettiqette in their curriculum. I could see having to deal with the unruly tike during the first attempt at the segment; however as he again chose to act up (which will happen with a child that young so early in the morning) the mother should have excused herself form the set to calm the little one down. But then again this is how most parents handle unruly children in a public setting, they expect every one else to deal with it.

There are more important things going on in this country and around the world that need to be discussed then about who qualifies to win $5,000.00 in sports equipment. The reason most likely why the Subway Corporation changed the rules of the contest was to insure that the funds were used for the purpose stated in the contest rules. Hopefully you will have a follow up with a response from Subway to put this to rest. Additionally, your local Subway Shop is a franchise where the owner may not have a say in the rules of a promotional give away. With the economy as it is, these owners and their emloyees should not be held accountable for the actions of corporation. Who knows, the idea may have been suggested by someone who had been home schooled. Just a thought!

I am a homeschooling parent and found out about the Subway contest through a WND (World Net Daily) article. I read their article, then checked the Subway website myself. After confirming the story, I used it as a discussion topic for my homeschooled children. My oldest was disappointed to learn that she could not enter. She wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper. Many homeschooling parents are a part of a homeschool support group that they could donate the sports equipment to. Our homeschool support group has a basketball team that has grown so large that they are breaking away from the group and will be flying solo! If you’re not a part of a homeschool support group, then maybe Subway could offer to give the sports equipment to the charity of your choice, or an alternative gift certificate to Scholastic, Half Price Books, Barnes and Noble, etc. Maybe the money can go to your local library. After all, homeschoolers do not get a tax break for school expenses. So we use the library a lot.

The point is: there are many alternatives. My family and I will be boycotting Subway until they change their policy. I hope many Americans do the same.

I’m West coast, so I have a hard time with the on air comment. That said. You make a point out of saying that you don’t work out. I look at you and I look at Gretchen, who has a couple of pressures to look good, and she does. She is an anchor and a former miss America. You are a hard body and that just doesn’t happen by acicident. By the way, as long as I’m being a sexist; That Bond girl outfit was a real attention grabber.

Fantasy over. Back to the real world.

I believe Subway has made a big mistake in excluding home schoolers but for the most part, I do not know of any elementary school in our state that has athletic facilities and the like. It is not until students reach junior high that students have school provided facilities. So if some public school elementary student wins and their school doesn’t have “facilities”, what is subway going to do with the $5,000?

Leaving homeschoolers out was a STUPID thing for Snubways (no, not a spelling mistake) to do. There are over 3 MILLION children that are homeschooled, and the number is growing constantly. Add five or more people to EACH child (mom, dad, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, etc..), and you’re looking at millions and millions of people that are furious at this situation. The contest says private schools are eligible, yet homeschooled children aren’t. In a court of law, ALL homechooled children are considered “private school”. I will never set foot in a snubways again, and I’ll make sure EVERYONE I know will be aware of the reason. I can count 7 people already that won’t go into a snubways again, and they’ll be telling their friends and families, who will tell theirs……..snowball effect!

I think Subway made a major blunder on this one! Our daugher attended a private school for most of her life but I home schooled her for 2 years because we had to relocate and couldn’t get her in the private school we wanted (her class was full). She scored high enough on her SAT and had a high enough GPA that she qualified for the Presidential Scholarship at the university she attends. She has consistently made the Dean’s list and is on track to graduate with honors from a college that requires a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) to be accepted.

We have friends who home school their 8 children and the oldest has completed all of his required work at 16 years old. Why would Subway want to exclude people who are working hard to ensure their children get the best education they can give them? Subway needs to work fast to repair this damage before the boycott takes hold! How about a separate (but equal) contest for home school students?

Good afternoon,

I’m very disappointed by Subway’s rules; I guess our home school family won’t be eating there anymore. Our Home school group of parents will be issuing letters to all Subway stores in our area asking them to complain to Corporate on our behalf. If you read the article in the American Thinker we are a growing force in the US and around the world.

We pay for our own entire curriculum and one parent does not work outside the home so we have a large cost in educating our children one on one. But overall, homeschoolers receive a great education because parents are involved.

$5000 dollars would be a big boost to our sports budget in educating our kids and could be used for the sports teams they play on in city leagues and the like. But to discriminate against us for homeschooling, that’s just not right.

Quiznos here we come!

Hello Alisyn…

I’ve not been online in a few days and wondered what happened to the AtSS? Has it been discontinued?

As a homeschool mom, I will join in the boycott against Subway. This is discrimation for choosing to educate your child the way you choose to, which goes against politically correct thinkers. Most homeschoolers are involved in sports, and they could donate the equipment to their team. The most distubing thing about the interview was not the baby, who wants to be up that early anyway, but Steve comment to tell the “kid the shut up”. How rude!!!! I always liked you Steve.

I am very upset that home educating families would be excluded from the contest like that, and I think that it is bad business for Subway. I understand that the grand prize is a large prize, but to completely exclude homeschoolers is not fair and is discriminatory. They could state that we could win a lesser prize, have to donate the equipment to a local place that could use it, or have to give it to the school our children would attend should they win. They could at least allow us to enter to win the free book, but they didn’t even do that. (I wonder what their rules are for cyber school families who are public school at home students.) Subway is a much healthier alternative to McDonald’s, and we used to enjoy it. However, we will not be going there again as long as it continues to be so unfriendly to homeschoolers.

I contacted Scholastic, who says that their official position is that they didn’t originally know about Subway’s exclusion. They say that they are completely against it. I think that it makes them look bad, too, considering that the prizes include a Scholastic gift basket and being published in their Parent & Child magazine. I know many homeschoolers who have gone to the warehouse events, who specificly look for Scholastic as a sign of high quality, and who enjoy buying Scholastic books like our family does. I hope that Scholastic helps to right this wrong, because I don’t think it is good for their business, either, since they are a part of the contest. JMO

How do I home educate with my children? ONE DAY AT A TIME and WITH LOTS OF LOVE! I never thought about homeschooling as an alternative until public school went very, horribly wrong. I won’t bother posting all about that, as it is a separate issue. However, I will say that I was not going to send my children to the local public school which allowed bullying, violence, inept teachers, and lack of education. If I was doing so much work with my children at home when they weren’t doing the work they needed in school, then I figured I might as well home educate them. Not to mention that they were, literally, in danger in the school. To make a long story short, I turned to home education in desperation.

It hasn’t been all easy, because we are all very strong personalities. Three girls (now) ages 11, 10, and 9 years old can get on your nerves just as much as I get on theirs some days. lol We are wrapping our fourth year, and it has been mostly rewarding. My oldest was very spacey in school and could not focus. You would call her name repeatedly, and she wouldn’t hear you. She even got in trouble for reading in school (go figure!) and staring out the window, and their punishment was to take away recess even though she needed to move more. Now I have her move and act out things to learn, and she picks things up very quickly. She reads as much as she wants, whatever she wants, and she has voraciously soaked up information. She is much more focused than she ever was in school, because she is allowed to take frequent breaks and to pursue what is interesting to her. (In fact, she just finished learning about the Alamo, and she can tell you every president up to the 16th and name several things that occurred during their presidency.) My youngest thrives in homeschool, and although she would be in 2nd grade, she enjoys doing 5th-6th grade work with her sisters. Her attitude has improved tremendously, partly because she is not bored. (By the way, my girls took a standardized test
