57 States?

Puh-leease. Barack Obama knows how many states there are. This was clearly a slip of the tongue. He meant to say he’d visited 47 states. Steve just posited on the air that if John McCain had made a slip like that, the mainstream media would have fried him. Your thoughts? If you missed it, check out the video below.

RUSH CALLED IT!! Here is what Rush had to say about the 57 states comment:

Obama said he’s going to campaign in 57 states, and it turns out that there are 57 Islamic states. There are 57 Islamic states. “Every year from 1999 to 2005, the organization of the Islamic conference representing the 57 Islamic states,” this is from the International Humanist and Ethical Union. And the title of the piece here is, “How the Islamic states dominate the UN human rights council,” and there are 57 of them. So did Obama just lose his bearings, or was this a more telling slip, ladies and gentlemen? Obama’s 57 states, not just a simple gaffe. He might have been thinking of the 57 Islamic states when he said he was going to campaign in all 57 states.
(laughing) Can’t wait ’til the Drive-Bys hear about this.

HA! Good one, m.malone!

A simple slip-up by Barrack ..I think the media would give McCain a pass as well..

GOOD MORNING ALISYN!

That sure is a purdee color on you!

Now Alisyn, if you were out trying your best to get a story and Obama blew you off and called you sweetie, you know that would have ticked you off. For some reason I have a feeling that if a stranger called Michelle Obama sweetie while she was doing her job, that person would get his teeth kicked in.

Maybe Hillary’s big surprise is that she will win those seven hidden states Obama speaks of. ;)

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

You’re right — if he’d dodged my question, it would certainly have ticked me off but the sweetie part, not so much.

Comment by Carl

Completely agree, I’m pretty sure that no one is dumb enough to not know that there’s 52 states, except maybe Steve. :p

Comment by pogger

If McCain had made that statement you can rest assured that the mainstream media would be playing that sound bite endlessly and saying he was too old to be the President. In Obama’s defense he has been on the road constantly for over a year and I am sure he is worn out and beginning to make verbal and mental mistakes. Maybe he should asks McCain eighty year old Mother what she does to stay so sharp. Between the two McCain and Obama McCain’s mother is probably the better choice for President.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Actually, pogger, McCain’s mother is 96 years old. If she were 80, she would have given birth to him at 9. But you’ve provided an excellent illustration of how we all get tripped up with our “numeracy” at times.

Comment by Victor

It is nice to finally know that Barack Obama is not perfect, maybe he is even human, but then who are we to judge. He who has not sinned should cast the first stone.

Comment by jim roland

Obama was referring to the 57 Muslim states

Comment by Sheri Blair

Just curious……how many states of Islam are there? A couple of days ago I was listening to talk radio and this radio host brought to our attention there are 57 states of Islam. I don’t even know what that means….but just found it curious.

Comment by chas

Good morning Ms. Alisyn.

Funny you should mention this. Sal has been posting it for days…lol

Of course it was a slip of the tongue, but has that ever stopped the press from blasting Bush for the same thing?

It’s a case of another double standard. In fact they did a good job of beating up on McCain with his slip over the mideast.

So I will loan you my old MP Nightstick so’s you can beat Obama soundly with it. Please don’t break though. ;)

Have a wonderful day Ma’am.

They would have been all over McCain for that one and would have called it another senior moment.

This election has brought out the best of the worst in people.

Race discrimination

Gender discrimination

and

Age discrimination

We have learned a lot about what condition our condition is in………

Comment by CoconutTelegraph - PCB, FL

Hi Alisyn~

Sounds like a slip of the tongue to me; but I agree, if McCain had made the same slip, his age would have been called into question!

BTW - you are Beautiful in Blue this morning! :)

Comment by christopher king

Well maybe thats why he is wearing that flag pin now so he can count the stars on it.

Comment by Matt

yeah he probably meant visited 47.

Alisyn you did a little segment on a guy who has a device that separates the hydrogen out of water to increase gas mileage. You said he calls it hydroworks or something like that. I don’t see anything on the internet. Do you have any contact info?

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Sure — the company is called Hydrowerx. The contraption is available for $200. Not sure where to get it though

Comment by Xavier

Just wanted to let you know that I agree with Steve. This potentially gives John McCain an opening to counter the “lost bearings” comment that the Democratic operatives were planning on using as a press against the McCain candidacy.

Comment by Jay

Alisyn,

I sent you that YouTube yesterday on your blog.
It may have been a slip of the tongue but he didn’t correct himself.

I agree with Steve; had McCain said it, it would have been splashed all over the world on MSM.
I immediately think of Dan Quayle and the potato(e) incident.
Who on this planet has never heard of that one?

Comment by Gary

He was tired, and he had a slip of the tongue. However, that being said, if it were John McCain saying it instead of Barack Obama, he (McCain) would have been attacked by the main stream media. My guess is Obama’s people would have gone after McCain as well.

I have noticed the media has stayed away from quoting Obama’s books. Too bad,..there are some interesting quotes in those books.

Thanks for a great show.

Regards,
G

Fried him?
They would’ve called him a senile old man and tried to throw him in a nursing home.

Can the media have someone committed? That power would come in handy.

Hey Toots!

I listened to Edward’s speech last night and at first I thought he was happily accepting the nomination, then I thought he was endorsing Hillary and finally in the last sentence he said something about Obama being the next president. lol No wonder the guy has lost so many times. He doesn’t know if he is coming or going and tries to play footsie with everyone.

Comment by Virginia

Good morning ALysin.

Seems that what he said all right, and we have been talking about it non stop. My warrior father who is 86 and was dozing in the chair “woke” and said that isn’t right? He has Ahlzeimer”s and knew that one think! Hum, very strange remark. He MUST explain! You look beautiful in your blue outfit. :)

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Thanks Virginia!

Comment by Linda Eleuteri

I believe that Steve is right. If McCain, or Hillary had made that slip then the media would have been all over them. For some reason the media has not been harsh on Obama, is it because they don’t want Al Sharpton and the NAACP after them. Obama keeps saying “change” but what change? This is one democrat who will be voting for McCain.

Comment by George Skinner

If George Bush had made that remark it would have been broadcast on all the late night talk shows, MSNBC & CNN.

Comment by Merri Dunn

Was Obama’s 57 state a slip from being tired or was it going back to his Islamic teachings since there are 57 Islamic states?! Read attached website info. I have not looked much further but what a blunder if it’s true! Not sure someone that makes those slips should be president.

Comment by Beth

Remember when VP Dan Quail was helping a teacher and she handed him cards with words on them and the children were to spell words and the card was mis-printed and he then seemed not to know how to spell potato? That ruined him - That was wrong and so is this - let it go.

I am 58 years old and in the 4th grade I learned that there were 50 states in the United States of America. Why would Mr. Obama forget this? I have not not forgotten, and I am sure most school children know this. Is Mr. Barack Obama not smarter than a 5th grader? I know I am not smart but he is running for President, and maybe he made a slip of the tongue, but he should correct his error. Thank You, Jo

Comment by William Helton

This is about two weeks old and at the time all of Fox reported it as fatigue and sleep deprivation and moved on. Why is it back today as a”NEW” issue? Also this was well before his statment about John McCain which by the had nothing his mental state. I am a regular veiwer but find this one low enough for Hannity to push not Fox News.

Comment by Karen

Yup, Steve is right. John McCain would be tortured (pun intended) by the press if he would have said that. Sen. Obama continues to get passes.

Comment by Mickey

Perhaps the Left Side would have fried him. Of course, we are all human and we all slip from time to time. I’m a McCain supporter, but I don’t feel we should pounce on any public figure for an honest mistake.

I think this must be bash Barack Obama day on Fox and Friends. A steady stream of subtle but negative digs at Obama. Fair and balanced? Give me a break.

Comment by Mark H. (aka toots)

There would be questions about McCain if he had made the slip, but it is obvious Obama was tired, distracted, etc. I think you are right though, most of the press would let it slide on McCain too after a day or too.

Reallly nice dress-you were glowing

Comment by Martin Mar

C’mon folks! Hop many of us meant to say one thing and said something else. It only makes sense that there are 48 contigenous states the other two, Alaska and Hawaii makes 50 states total. And yes, I do know how to count. Regardless of the candidate, they are working hard to win the presidency and I wouldn’y fault any of them for making a mistake like this.

Peace to you all AND HAVE A wonderful day! :o)

Comment by Marshall

Alaska and Hawaii did not become states until 1959.

If anyone finds a Wright sermon preaching about the 57 states of Islam, we will have one helluva media ride again! lol

Comment by James Maples

I believe if McCain had made that same slip Obama would gently use that against him the whole campaign. Not only that, I believe much of the media would tag along for the ride…

Comment by GaryT

Maybe in the drug induced world Obama lives in (primarily Harvard) there are 57! All that crack and booze he did when a teenager has come back to haunt him finally. Didn’t we have a president not too many years ago that smoked dope and protested the Vietnam War on foreign soil? I seem to remember him being a Democrat too.

Then there are Democrats that don’t like your short skirts so they go home to where they belong, CNN.

What’s the deal on the great contest we heard about for three weeks, now it’s been about 6 weeks and nary a word? Did ya’ll give up on it and forget to tell us? Three weeks of Hoopla and now it’s as though it was a long past memory never to be heard from again. Think you said ya’ll were waiting for a special day to announce the winner. What are you waiting for, Hillary Clinton to be named as John McCain’s running mate?

That’s OK! Just keep up the short skirts and don’t listen to the fashion critics, didn’t want to take time off work to come to New York anyway right now. Too busy down here in Texas. Hey! I got an idea, why don’t ya’ll come on down here. You could do your show from our AT&T center where the San Antonio Spurs play and then I could show you and Gretchen our fair city!

Alysin,

Good morning all. 57 states is a slip all right. Cause for huge pause and much listening, thinking and discerning must ensue for the idea of the next president of the United States of America, me thinks? For sure and that is huge “slip” for someone with an education from Harvard….I think. Yep, I am sure that must be so. lol
ah, John McCain is coming to see me today it would seem. The attorney general is stepping down, and Strickland is on t.v here with a furrowed brow and great concern as he looks for a replacement. Our 911 system is the worst in the country! Geezz, whodathunkit!
Infanticide? Leave the new baby to just perish? Is that not against the Hippocratic oath, there for wrong, not to mention, murder. They are, after all, putting these little girls in jail for putting said new infant in the trash can. WHAT is going on and, again, how stupid do “they” think we are?
Other than that, all is well and I have my first cupa, and will be back at work soon as the ankle is healing…air caste in place and walking around gingerly. lol

Comment by Jimmy Adams in Pelham, GA

morning Alisyn and everyone,
57 states….a slip of the tongue…but they would have been all ove McCain if he had said that

Comment by Ellen Greathouse

Actually Sen. Obama thinks there are 58 States - listen to his sound bite again, he says “I’ve been to 57 states …one more to go” I’m not a Hillary supporter either BUT I have more confidence in her than someone we’ve “just met” that everyone is letting cloud their minds with empty promises and “feel good” statements. I’m praying that we get through this election without making the mistake of the century!

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

He meant to say 47 with one more to go. He went on to say that he’d wanted to go to Hawaii and Alaska too but his campaign handlers hadn’t alloted time yet.

Comment by Salvatore

Alisyn, I hear you Chas, and I agree with Marshall, it sounded like he was endorsing Clinton, I just lost respect for Edwards trying to take away that Clinton kicked Obama all over West Virginia like she was playing soccer.

Comment by Mike Malone

Good Morning Alisyn Sweetie!

(Is it bad for me to repeat here the email of mine that Steve wrote?)

It is no wonder Obama is ahead in the delegate count, he knew of extra states to run in. Hillary needs to discover some unknown states and win those primaries so she can catch up.

I suggest,
West Dakota
East Carolina
Mexas
Calavada
Colotah
Ohisylvania
New Yorksey

Alisyn is right (OF course!!) clearly Obama was just tired and misspoke. There are plenty of things to criticize Obama on but this is nothing but a funny gaf.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

I like it even better the second time!

Comment by Virginia

Alysin,

Another circa moment :). When I was four there were NOT 50 states, so I have to really keep my short term long term sharp!!! so as to get the correct flag up every morning…heheh! Oh well. We have big ones, little ones, 48 stars and 50 stars. They all work.

They continue to fuss over the cap and gown. What a world we live in for sure. Let the young person wear the uniform and smile big, and be proud of your graduating student!!! lol

Comment by James Maples

I believe if McCain had made that same mistake (57 states) Obama would have never let it go. And I also believe much of the media would drag after him for months…

Comment by Rebecca Bryant

I think I have found some of those extra states.
Wright caused Obama to visit the ; state of oblivion, the state of denial, the state of confusion and the state of embarrassment. Pa required a visit to the state of cultural shock. Indiana caused him to visit the state of anxiety. NC should have led him to the state of awe.
WV took Obama to the state of depression. Michigan and FL. lead to a state of supression. I hope at some point he has visited the state of the Union!

Comment by Tom

Fifty Nifty United States, from thirteen original colonies… How could you ever forget that song!

Comment by Virginia

Alysin,

The miss spoken remark by McCain did get non stop remarks, even though Liberman was there to remind him who was who in Iraq, so I think we can safely assume that the junior senator fr Illinois will, again, escape much ado about this, as he has enjoyed this state of the attitude that he is just tired and it’s ok citizens, do not worry. The question really is, will “they” pounce on him after he has officially gotten the nod and is the one running for the president from the democrat party. We wait to see the “drama” continue to unfold..yes we do. lol

Comment by Jennifer W

Well, I am not an obama supporter but I do think it was a slip of the tongue. Of course being as unpatriotic as he is who knows lol, I think it was just sleep deprivation and he meant 47 I do believe that, but I am like Doocy in the fact that if it were John McCain it would be eaten up alive by media and just an outlet for them to slam his age. You think anybody would believe it was a slip up if it were McCain???

I dunno about the 57 Islamic states-I think he just meant to say 47. Who among us has never made a slip up like that-I do that all the time-usually not for the states because I don’t have to talk about the 50 states everyday or I might do the same. Shoot I have to roll call my nieces and nephews names and I am just 33.

The Catholic League has been getting many phone calls and e-mails regarding Sen. Obama’s support for infanticide. Good Morning Alisyn,

A simple slip of the tongue!

And to your first blogger, Olivia. Rush Limbaugh is the biggest idiot I’ve ever seen. It amazes me that people in this “educated” country, listen to the garbage that guy can come up with. I hope for this nations sake, nobody uses any of his advice for a basis of their decision in November. God, help us all!

Comment by Laurie

I agree with Steve. I think if John McCain made that comment we would be hearing how old he is and how can he run a country if he couldn’t remember the number of states we have. Now since Obama made that comment it seems to be okay. Why is it that someone like Obama who we really know nothing about, with so many issues that keep popping up, keeps moving forward. How is it that so many people support Obama when for such a younger and inexperienced person is carrying so much baggage. This really scares me to even think where this country will be heading if he is elected. He is always cushioned when a problem arises, and that is done by most of the media. They don’t announce or question any of the issues surrounding this man, but when it is on the other side (Republican side) thats all you would hear and have been hearing. And if its a matter of Obama being tired and stressed from campaigning, how will he be able to handle 24/7 problems of a whole country?

Media darling Barack Obama played the age card today in discussing John McCain with Wolf Blitzer.
CNN reported:

“……….I think is an example of him losing his bearings as he pursues this nomination.”
*******************************

“Despite a recent promise from Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean not to make Sen. John McCain’s age — he turns 72 in August — an issue in the presidential campaign, a senior Democratic operative has started a new website designed to draw attention to just that fact.”

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Neither Barack Obama nor a senior Democratic operative is part of the mainstream media.

I honestly believe that both candidates are aware of the number of states. I know either press can be petty ie. potatoe but I will go out on a limb and guess nobody will vote for their candidate based upon he knowledge of the number of states. Keep up the good work, it’s appreciated.

Not long ago I worked with a guy that had a bad habit of calling most women baby, honey, sugar, etc. and one day I was standing in the hall talking to the guy when a very nice secretary walked by. He stopped her and said, “Honey could you get me a copy of….” She reared up and said, “You do not call me honey, baby, sugar! I have warned you about that once already and if it happens again we are both going to be sitting in HR!”

She was always a very polite woman but she was of an age that still remembers transitional times for race and gender. She would bring things from her garden to share with the whole office and she would happily make coffee if she was the first to arrive in the morning. But, if anyone demanded that she make coffee there was hell to pay and that scenario did play out and it got ugly for the dumb arse that thought making coffee was part of her job description.

People take things in different ways for different reasons and the reporter in MI clearly did not take kindly to being called sweetie while she was trying to ask tough questions about that state’s economy.

We MUST remember that Rush is a TALK SHOW HOST!!! C’mon guys. He is having the best time, as he always does, and it is just what it is. He’s not running for office, and he makes it very clear exactly what his “agenda” is, so anyone listening to him shouldn’t be IF they cannot be amused, informed from time to time, and have a full appreciation for FREE SPEeCH AND AN OPEN SOCIETY that we still enjoy in this country, that is now in the throes of the big event of electing a president. A most exciting time, as the world watches, again, and not quietly, I might add, our process go forward and, oh gee, work again. NO huge firing of guns, and anarchy reigning…just a lot of talk by many like Rush, and this group, and then, hopefully, full support for our new president regardless of who it might be. lol

Alysin,

Natsha..good observation, so I will watch more closely next fifty times it is on. You are probably correct, as this was really an unthinkable “gaff” and I would much prefer you are correct. If the information is correct about the 57 Islamic states, it does give one pause to understand why he would think this was funny, considering what is going on in the world. Maybe it was not a “gaff” due to fatigue, but that he doesn’t have a very good sense of timing for a very bad “joke”. Thanks for the reminder to listen, think, and discern. lol
