To be honest, I don’t really think he should be fired for the mere fact that, well, this country is all about freedom of speech. People tune into Maher because of his outlandish comments…He is on HBOP, not NBC anymore. I truley don’t think that that many people will leave HBO because of what he said. He is a comedian…he is supposed to make jokes…even if some of them are offensive.

While I am no Imus fan, he got fired for saying something much less inflamatory. Unfortunately, society has now decided its ok to have freedom of speech as long as you don’t insult anyone. If you don’t like what someone says, turn them off, cancel HBO, etc. I find it scary that if you insult someone, you get fired, sued or both. However, since the minority of folks in society seem to have more pull, if Imus gets fired, then BIll should get fired or else, just let folks say whatever assinine thing they want and then just don’t listen. Or better yet, have folks sign a contract when they are hired stating which subjects are off limits, then they are voluntarily agreeing to not make certain statements. Then if they do, they get fired for violating their contract, instead of having their freedom of speech violated.

Maher should be fired!! It’s way passed freedom of speech to insult and accuse in such a blanket form any religion or sect of people. He has a perfect right to express his feelings on his own time and dime but not at the expense HBO or any media outlet that has to have ratings and exist at the veiwers pleasure. It’s not a joke to accuse the head of any organization of blanket pediphilia because you had some perverts in that org. I venture to say if they did, Bill just might have some skeletons in his own closet. I really think you the cast has tried to make a big deal about this subject. Bill Maher is a comedian. He later apologized for comparing the Pope to Nazis. He justified his comments in regards to pedophiles and I have to agree with him. If we were talking about another religion or, as Bill Maher stated, a CEO of a major corporation who made such a cover up, then the joke would not have been so vial to the cast. I’m all about respecting everyones belief system, but not your pushing political correctness – the very thing you’re fighting against most of the time.

HBO would be foolish to anger 80% of the population by keeping him on.

Isn’t it odd that there are certain folks that it’s okay to make fun of? Catholics and the Pope seem to fall into that category. Also, Southerns are easy targets–especially if they are from Mississippi. I guess that’s because we don’t riot in the streets or behead anybody if we’re offended.

As I said earlier on the other thread, “Bill Maher is an idiot!” He always has been, looks like he always will be. His brand of humor is not at all funny, but he can says these things because we do have freedom of speech. Just stick to those groups that is okay to offend (unlike Imus), and Bill will have smooth sailing and be able to wrap himself in his right to freedom of speech. I’ve never watch him and don’t have HBO (by choice), so I can’t turn him off or drop that channel.

Of course he should not be fired! For what reason? He is an athiest who used to be a Catholic, and for all we know he may have been abused himself in some form or another. So it is to be expected that he will make comedic comments about any religious organization and their leaders. He continually makes comments about believing in a diety and offends me from time to time but SO WHAT!! that is what makes America what it is. Stop with the Gestapo mentality already.

What Maher said was hate speech. He obviously has a problem with the Catholic Church. I guess we can let him keep his job, if he will go 5 rounds with me in a boxing ring. I always wonder why all the good works that the Catholic and its clergy do around the world are never mentioned in the media. Its just like the Soldiers in Iraq. Never does the media report all the courageous and generous acts they perform every day in Iraq. The media only reports the bombs that explode or the rare dishonorable behavior of a very very few soldiers.

I don’t think he should be fired. I do think that it is unfortunate that the level of dialog has sunk this low but this is what happens when you have comedians somehow becoming political pundits. These people are trying to provoke responses and are often deliberately outrageous or inflammatory to do so. Maher does it but so do Colbert, Stewart, and even Dennis Miller when he’s on the Factor or hosting his own show. Maher’s comments may be distasteful but so is a lot of the prgramming on TV. People need to get over being so offended by words. And it is not only Catholics. I’m an atheist and believe me, people say whatever they want about us! Bill O’Reilly makes what I consider to be insulting remarks about secular citizens on a regular basis but I wouldn’t want him fired. It’s his opinion and a healthy discourse is good for society. Unfortunately with most of these blowhards, there is no discourse. There is only them spouting their opinions and beating down anyone who disgrees. While that might not be civil, it’s not illegal and no one should get fired for it.

Apologize for what? We all have a right to our opinion. In mine we left England to get away from the Catholic rhetoric. I watched a program on the LINK channel several months ago. In the report they talked about the molestation of children by priests. The catholic church actually hid some of these pedophiles in Rome. A letter was sent to Rome by an investigating officer from Arizona and the letter was returned unopened to him from the Vatican. Priests were moved from one church to another or transferred to third world countries, where the Catholic Church thought people had no recourse in reporting the pediphiles. When a grandmother reported the priest for molesting her grandson, she was the one who was rediculed by the people, not the priest himself. The so called pope was the one who initiated doctrine, whereby the victim was the one ordered to keep silent regarding the molestation. Trust this man? I don’t think so. What other church is able to pay out billions for restitution in molestation cases? Whats with all the gold and jewels at the Vatican? I don’t believe Jesus preached for gold and jewels. Seems to me he wore sandals and plain robes to do his preaching. Wasn’t it the Catholic church who helped some of the Natzi’s escape to South America? Wasn’t it the Catholic Church that burned people at the stake for being a so called witch? Wasn’t it the Catholic Church that tortured and killed people for being so called heritics? Bill Maher has every right to feel the way he does, and to also speak his mind. However, even though the Constitution guarantees that no government entity, at any level, may take legal action because of his comments, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have to accept the consequences of the things he said. HBO is not the government, and therefore, they are free to respond in whatever manner they see fit. Further, HBO, as a corporation, has a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders, and if Mr. Maher’s remarks cause HBO to lose money, or are otherwise detrimental to the corporation, which does seem to be the case, HBO absolutely should fire him. In the final analysis, it’s a business decision.

A word about the rash of videos of girls beating up other girls. I have a 17 year old daughter… with that said I would like to ask a question that no one, including Fox News, is asking and should be asking;

Where are the parents of these girls?

Blame it on the schools, modern technology, etc, etc, but proper behavior begins in the home and any good responsible parent would not find their child doing things like that.

I think the Pope’s visit to the United States was a very positive one. Just as the Pope has free speech in the US so does Bill Maher. I don’t watch his show because I don’t believe the non sense he and others talk about. He is a so called comedian however I don’t see any humor. In some countries you can be jailed(Russia) for speaking your mind. Not there yet. Are we? I think this is all about political correctness and the media seems to be driving this. We live in a society that stands for free speach. Bill Maher should be free to say what he wants. However, like Imus, if the public is opposed to his comments, HBO will have to review and determine if it is economically viable to keep him on. Make no mistake about it, Imus was let go because Sharpton had gotten sponsers to back out of the program. Money is how you get the attention of networks, sponsers start bailling on Maher and the show ceases to exist.

That’s my take on the business side. However, on the political side, I find it ironic how leftist such as Bill Maher can continue to draw an audience. He claims to have an openminded enlightened view. Ironically, were we to make some comments about the behaviors of Barney Frank or the practices of the late Gerry Studds, Maher would be out shouting about intollerence and homophobia. I have not been able to play the after show video for several days now. Fox problem or problem here?

I am a Catholic and am saddened by what some of the priests did but to paint all Catholic clergy with the same brush is sad. Granted, in the past many things that we now find despicable are being openly discussed and corrected.

There was a time that anything that was an embarrassment such as mental retardation, disfigurement, drunkeness was covered up by society as what you do. Wives were abused but their husbands were given free passes because “man was head of the household” and now we do things differently. It wasn’t right then and isn’t right now, but when we try to correct the wrongs, why keep bringing is up. Not every priest is a pervert just like any policeman, fireman, teacher, minister, and on and on who was found to be an abuser or pervert means all of their kind are bad. Remember the term “moving forward.”

It seems that we should really practice forgiveness for our own sakes and punish the offender and be glad that corrections are being made as well as some retribution to show the remorse one feels. Jokes about shameful acts by religious groups, racial groups, ethnic groups are funny. It’s sad.

Why should Maher be fired for pointing out the fact that the Pope is a former Nazi who has a documented history of covering up child molestation? Everything he said is 100% based on FACT. What Maher said is correct … if the Pope was a CEO of a major corporation covering up thousands of cases of sexual abuse, he would be thrown in jail. Why should the Pope get treated differently because he’s the leader of a multi-national religious organization as opposed to a multi-national business organization?

I personally was not offended by Bill’s comments. The Catholic Church has alot of answering to do on behalf of the Child Molestations!! As for firing Bill that’s an HBO choice.

I watch Bill mahr every friday night, while i dont always agree with his standings on some issues, i watch him because he makes me laugh. No, I personally don’t think Maher should be fired (by me anyway)..That should be left up to the folks @ HBO to do so…If there’s enough outrage (people canceling their HBO subscription) out there, HBO will no doubt let him go…$$$..I really don’t care one way or the other.

It’ll be interesting to see though just how this all plays out: Will there be enough folks so pisssed off by Maher’s comments that they’ll be willing to give up some of the great programs on HBO in order to push them into firing him?(It’ll take a lot) or… Will the offended sit back and expect HBO to fire him simply because they think it’s the right thing to do?…I don’t think the latter will happen..

Hi Alisyn, again. re:Angela…we are given to believe that the “ranch” is not part of the Latter Day Saints, and I believe that to be so. They are not part of our society, except that they do receive compensation from the State..on the dole…their women are shared and shared alike by all the men and the going age is what?? thirteen or younger I believe. It is a wicked, evil, cult with no alliance to any religion at all. This has been carefully documented by those who have escaped their grasp. That is what we know. I hope they get them all. It is a very sad story. I think we all worry about the women and children coming out of this place and what will happen to them. Here is what I am thinking if I’m HBO. I totally am for freedom of speech, without question. But if a host says something that offends sooo many people, and all of a sudden, thousands of people drop their subscriptions because of it….Welll then the decision to cut Maher would be a financial one, not necessarily a decision over freedom of speech. Everyone in this country is entitled to that, but those that “cross the line” sometimes have to be ready for the consequences…It is all about the free market…let the people decide…If you remember the ABC comment Maher made….it took them over 1 month to fire him…the ratings got to a point where it was imperative to kick him out…will this be a similar situation…Whose knows, only time will tell! He should absolutely not be fired. I am a christian and went to catholic school all my life. After the scandal with the priests molesting children, I’ve lost total respect for the catholic religion. Michael Jackson got away with doing what he did because he paid, whoever was accusing him, off. The catholic religion did the same. WHY couldn’t the priests go to jail where they all should be right now.

Have been trying to email HBO all day to voice my displeasure with Mr. Maher, funny thing though, their email system has been experiencing technical difficulties. Let’s hope all the displeasure and feedback that HBO receives will result in the removal of Mr. Maher. Need to keep the pressure on HBO.

Bill Maher’s talk show is the last vestige of free speech in this country. If you dont like it dont watch. Maybe all the so called christians in this country should pray for him, instead of casting stones.

If Don Imus and others before him can be fired for making a seeming disparaging remark about somebody or something, what is the reason for being ‘hands off’ on Bill Maher? I am not a catholic and don’t watch or listen to Maher normally, but I find this equivalent to disparaging a religion when we are going out of our way to ensure it doesn’t happen to other religions or ethnicities.

I do not think that he should be fired. It was a stupid thing he said but he is excercising his freddom of speech. Being a born again Christian. I personally did not like what he said, but he is entiltled to his own opinion. I tell ya what though, if those comments he made had been about any other religion-he would have gotten alot of backlash. Maher’s comments about the Pope were no different in genre than the comments that Don Imus made about the Rutger’s Basketball player. Maher assumed that because Joseph Ratzinger was German and forced to be a part of the Hitler youth, that he was therefore a Nazi. And it is as insulting to refer to a German as a Nazi as it is to refer to an African American as any of the many epithets that are out there. It is the same thing. Do I feel Imus should have been fired? No! HOWEVER – since Imus was fired, Maher should also be fired!

If Maher said something that was not true, then he should be fired. I being a person who does not believe in God find some of his comments amusing. I think he is currect in many ways about the flaws in religions, they recuire an exceptance of things that we would consider lies if a family member said they happened. Religion is the most devisive force in the world, everyone of them thinks (knows) the others are wrong and they must be taught the correct way. I wish we could all learn not to feel so threatend by what others say.

I have emailed HBO and advised them that as a long time subscriber, I am cancelling and making everyone I know aware of these disgusting and hate filled comments. As one of your guests said, since when is the rape of children a laughing matter. As always, Fox leads the way. My husband I love Fox. It is the only news that is not slanted all the way to the left, bending the truth as it goes.

HBO needs to take some responsibility for what they are willing to air. They ran a special a few years ago called, I think, “hate.com”. Morris Dees the civil rights attorney was on it. It focused on all manner of racist and hate behavior. I guess that was OK to take the moral high ground with.

I guess they’re in the right on those issues but don’t care about the “hate speach” being aired on their own programming.

He could come home any time he wished but he stayed for 23 years their mission was to set up and run orphanages under the threat of death at any moment. he and a small group of priest and six nuns saved thousands and thousands of kids that were just abandoned be cause there was not enough food for them. They made a book called The Iron Man of China about my uncle Farther Joseph Lavin. For bill m sake i hope he wasnt talking about this bunch of priest Or ILL hunt him down myself and kick him in the berries. this is the problem I have with Bill m and people like him mostly the left! It makes it very hard for me to be openly proud of what this man has done for the kids. the church is also to blame. I find this rather sad. THANKS BILL MAHER and HBO. I am also tired of some people blaming the Church for what
a few priests have done. In EVERY religion, in EVERY organization there are child abusers.
Do your research – you will find that in ALL religions, in ALL public school systems, in ALL governments, in ALL areas of life, and in MANY HOMES there have been, and will be, child abusers. Do your research and find out for yourself.

I don’t think Maher should be fired or punished in any way. The sad truth is, as ‘Benny’ said himself, the whole scandal was handled badly. And if he were the CEO some corp. that ran daycare centers or schools, they’d be in very, very hot water. What is so offensive about the truth? Is all this fuss because he said it about Catholics or the Pope? Why should religion get a pass? These things happened and the bishops blew it.
I was raised a Catholic, but I’m not saddened by Maher’s remarks, I’m MORE saddened by the way these priests were protected and shuffled around instead of charged, tried and punished accordingly!! The money collected at Mass every week was used to pay off accusers. That money is supposed to support the PARISH, not protect some bishop’s reputation.
This abuse was born of a sense of entitlement and the way they were protected and moved from parish to parish and even spent time in ’safe houses’ only served to reinforce that ‘I can do no wrong’ attitude.
Bill Maher expressed an opion. What these abuserd did was evil.

Bill Maher should stay right where he is, expressing opinions and allowing his guests to express opnions. He should NOT be fired because a segment of the population either doesn’t agree with or is somehow offended by his words. They’re only words. The abuse happened. Priests were protected and they were moved from parish to parish. This was the real evil, not some buffoon trying to be funny.
I think some folks out there need to readjust their priorities.

I didn’t think Imus should be fired and I don’t think Maher should be fired. Having said that, people who were offended by his remarks have at least the same free speech rights Maher has. If you want to make your voice heard, recognize that HBO is part of Time-Warner, a global media company that includes CNN, Time Magazine, People Magazine, Golf Magazine and many other media outlets. It appears that people are already boycotting CNN, mostly because it is a lousy excuse for a news network. If you’re seriously offended by Maher’s comments, find ways to let these other outlets know that you are offended, that you know of the connection and that you’re making other choices until Time-Warner takes decisive action to address Maher’s outrageous comments.

Maher won’t be fired. Had he insulted a black women’s basketball team or Islam he would already be gone. It is PC even encouraged by the far left in this country to slam christianity. Scary!

After listening to Bill, I am wondering – which comments were incorrect and for what comments is he supposed to apologize?

I didn’t have HBO before this, but now I am signing up for it. I think people should be allowed to say what they believe and not have a bunch of people whining and crying on the internet for them to get fired because they said something you don’t like.

Dear Ali, Everyone on the show (Fox & Friends) seens to be Catholic. Not sure about you. But, the sentiment is very clearly one sided concerning Bill Maher’s comedic comments. His apology for the Nazi comment was fine, except it was true as dictated and forced by Hitler when the pope was 14. Otherwise, like Maher said, “If the pope was the ceo of a major corporation of hundreds or even thousands of people, and the pedofile offenses were commited, he would be fired and put in jail”.
Forget major corporation, if he, the pope, was the head of a small day care center, he would be run out of town and put in jail in light of the offenses. And, the magnitude is outragous. Maher is a commedian, big deal. Not one of my favorites, but humorous.
All I’m saying is what happened to fair and balanced. On this situation, F&F seems to be enticing it’s audiance to “Jump on the band wagon and burn Maher at the stake”. Sad, when everything Maher said is true, and at least the Nazi part-he did apologize for, was truely a forced issue of the times by Hitler.

I could like his show if he were not so anti-religous. He should be held in check for many comments which offend and are over the top. There is funny, there is shock, there is interesting, most people, even shock jocks know there needs to be some boundries. Bill Maher setps over them too frequently, and to say what he did about the Pope is just plain mean spirited. While Maher berates people he thinks are bigots he has proven he is just like those he berates. I do not recall him ever saying anything negative about a jewish leader, a muslim leader, or anything about certain races. Perhaps besides being a bigot, he is also a coward and a hypocrite. As a catholic, although not a strongly practicing one, I was offended by Maher’s comments, but then I realized that perhaps we of the catholic faith are more in line with the teachings of Jesus in applying the “turn the other cheek” philosophy. He finds us a convenient target for his hatefilled comments, but just notice that he does not insult Islam or their prophet! He knows that he can insult us because he knows that nothing will come of it, but again, notice that he does not insult Islam or their prophet. Perhaps if he does insult the Prophet (at some point), when the riots start, when he receives death threats, or when his car is vandalized by the islamic faithful, he will realize that Catholics and Christians are not the evil people (or leaders) that he portrays us as.

Bryan Watson is right! Maher has always been an intellectual fake. Maher thinks terrorists are braver than US soldiers because terrorists commit suicide when they murder while our soldiers kill the enemy with weapons from a distance. Maher should be put in jail for treason. Islam is a true cult of violence and has never evolved from the middle ages. Maher is too big of a coward to tell that story.

Bill Maher should lose his job only if HBO determines it to be in its best interest to fire the sanctimonious SOS – just like Don Imus was. There is no free speech issue here.

Personally, I hope HBO does so because Maher is a failed D-list comedien (because he’s not funny) trying to resurrect his miserable career by passing himself off as somehow magically transformed into an enlightened political comentator/pundit. His show however, conclusively demonstrates that he is neither funny nor enlightened.

Now that HBO has cancelled Deadwood, I am cancelling it. Mahers’ show is one of the reasons.

First off, Freedom of Speech is not what this country runs on. You can’t yell fire in a crowded theater with out some sort cupability. You will answer for your actions. Second, I defended this guys “right” to free speech, and I will to the death. Third, People won’t leave HBO? I sure did, they no longer get my money, not for cable, I canceled it, not for phone service, I canceled it, not for internet, I canceled it. Imus is a comedian, Michael Richards is a comedian, no excuse. This is why our country is in the tailspin we are in. His remarks, and his so called apology was simple put, ABSURD!

I cancelled HBO when they started showing Rosie O’Donnells family cruise. What really did it for me was one evening my son was watching a G rated movie on HBO and then the next thing on was her cruise. I cancelled all of the movie channels….now we just order from netflix. In response to Bill Maher’s recent comments about the Pope and remarks made concerning Christians in the past, we took action.. We cancelled HBO because they did nothing to malign him for his statement. I believe Bill Maher’s freedom ends, where my freedom begins. HBO should have been proactive rather than waiting for their phones to ring. There has been a long history of Catholic and Christian bashing. Agreed, he has the right to free speech however, when he personalizes his comments he is stepping over the line. HBO should have addressed his egregious behavior when it happened. Bill’s attempted apology didn’t even come close to resembling one. It doesn’t seem equitable Imus was fired for insulting 12 African-American women while Maher’s are over looked.

Someplace in your programing regarding the price of gasoline, A couple of comments might be indicated to remind the viewers that we have traditionally paid less per gallon of gas than the rest of the industrialized nations.( A U.S. gallon is less than a European gallon ) A review of the price of a U.S. gallon of gas in Germany, France, England and others might be enlightening. It wouldn’t stop the pain but it might help.
