To be honest, I don’t really think he should be fired for the mere fact that, well, this country is all about freedom of speech. People tune into Maher because of his outlandish comments…He is on HBOP, not NBC anymore. I truley don’t think that that many people will leave HBO because of what he said. He is a comedian…he is supposed to make jokes…even if some of them are offensive.

Comment by Salvatore

Alisyn,
bill maher has insulted [ ONE BILLION ] people world wide, HBO needs to do something about this, if they do nothing, a lot of people will cancel HBO.

Comment by Gayle

While I am no Imus fan, he got fired for saying something much less inflamatory. Unfortunately, society has now decided its ok to have freedom of speech as long as you don’t insult anyone. If you don’t like what someone says, turn them off, cancel HBO, etc. I find it scary that if you insult someone, you get fired, sued or both. However, since the minority of folks in society seem to have more pull, if Imus gets fired, then BIll should get fired or else, just let folks say whatever assinine thing they want and then just don’t listen. Or better yet, have folks sign a contract when they are hired stating which subjects are off limits, then they are voluntarily agreeing to not make certain statements. Then if they do, they get fired for violating their contract, instead of having their freedom of speech violated.

Alisyn - you look terrific. Wish I could have looked that good after giving birth! :)

If they could fire Imas then Maher deserves the same.

Maher should be fired!! It’s way passed freedom of speech to insult and accuse in such a blanket form any religion or sect of people. He has a perfect right to express his feelings on his own time and dime but not at the expense HBO or any media outlet that has to have ratings and exist at the veiwers pleasure. It’s not a joke to accuse the head of any organization of blanket pediphilia because you had some perverts in that org. I venture to say if they did, Bill just might have some skeletons in his own closet. Using Bill’s own argument, I guess all comedians are a_ _ holes like he is but we aren’t at his level of rediculously low IQ shock jock comments or hate mongering, so we won’t go there. He has been given a free ticket to stir up blanket hate against an organization that has done so many things to help people. I’m not even Catholic. I was raised a baptist and think this is an obsurd attack on the church and religion in general. People that are entertained by this type of slandering of religion needs to understand this is a reflection of their IQ and lack of compassion for fellow human beings. I would hate to know I just PO’d 25 million people. WOW! I will just stand back and watch the frey.

Comment by pat

Bill has been out of touch with reality for quite awhile. His comments were
only another example of a man with a napoleon complex trying to get noticed by saying outrageous things. He should be fired and sent to the land of the irrelevant.

Comment by Justin

I really think you the cast has tried to make a big deal about this subject. Bill Maher is a comedian. He later apologized for comparing the Pope to Nazis. He justified his comments in regards to pedophiles and I have to agree with him. If we were talking about another religion or, as Bill Maher stated, a CEO of a major corporation who made such a cover up, then the joke would not have been so vial to the cast. I’m all about respecting everyones belief system, but not your pushing political correctness - the very thing you’re fighting against most of the time.

Comment by DogOnCrack

HBO would be foolish to anger 80% of the population by keeping him on.
To do so would mean that they’re putting their agenda before their profits.

Comment by christine

I personally think he is an ass, however he is entitled to his outlandish opinion

Comment by Gwen in Mississippi

Isn’t it odd that there are certain folks that it’s okay to make fun of? Catholics and the Pope seem to fall into that category. Also, Southerns are easy targets–especially if they are from Mississippi. I guess that’s because we don’t riot in the streets or behead anybody if we’re offended.

As I said earlier on the other thread, “Bill Maher is an idiot!” He always has been, looks like he always will be. His brand of humor is not at all funny, but he can says these things because we do have freedom of speech. Just stick to those groups that is okay to offend (unlike Imus), and Bill will have smooth sailing and be able to wrap himself in his right to freedom of speech. I’ve never watch him and don’t have HBO (by choice), so I can’t turn him off or drop that channel.

It was great to see you all 3 hours and enjoyed Greg Kelly in with the grown-ups today also. He was a fantastic fill-in for Brian.

Y’all have a great day!

Comment by Dawuud

Of course he should not be fired! For what reason? He is an athiest who used to be a Catholic, and for all we know he may have been abused himself in some form or another. So it is to be expected that he will make comedic comments about any religious organization and their leaders. He continually makes comments about believing in a diety and offends me from time to time but SO WHAT!! that is what makes America what it is. Stop with the Gestapo mentality already.

Comment by MARK

Maher should be fired for the mere fact that he is not funny …. never has been! His outlandish comments and name calling are his shtick, they’re not funny, just outlandish. He riles up the left with his stupid comments and that’s how he gets his stupid audience!

I cancel HBO which sucks anyway!

Mark

Comment by DogOnCrack

Why is everyone talking about this like it’s a first amendment issue?
IT ISN’T!
The government is NOT involved!
Maher’s freedom of speech ends when he clocks into work.
If HBO wants to fire him for violating their standards, they have every right to do so.

Comment by Patrick

What Maher said was hate speech. He obviously has a problem with the Catholic Church. I guess we can let him keep his job, if he will go 5 rounds with me in a boxing ring. I always wonder why all the good works that the Catholic and its clergy do around the world are never mentioned in the media. Its just like the Soldiers in Iraq. Never does the media report all the courageous and generous acts they perform every day in Iraq. The media only reports the bombs that explode or the rare dishonorable behavior of a very very few soldiers.

Comment by Don

I don’t think he should be fired. I do think that it is unfortunate that the level of dialog has sunk this low but this is what happens when you have comedians somehow becoming political pundits. These people are trying to provoke responses and are often deliberately outrageous or inflammatory to do so. Maher does it but so do Colbert, Stewart, and even Dennis Miller when he’s on the Factor or hosting his own show. Maher’s comments may be distasteful but so is a lot of the prgramming on TV. People need to get over being so offended by words. And it is not only Catholics. I’m an atheist and believe me, people say whatever they want about us! Bill O’Reilly makes what I consider to be insulting remarks about secular citizens on a regular basis but I wouldn’t want him fired. It’s his opinion and a healthy discourse is good for society. Unfortunately with most of these blowhards, there is no discourse. There is only them spouting their opinions and beating down anyone who disgrees. While that might not be civil, it’s not illegal and no one should get fired for it.

Comment by Jesse Bowles

Bill maher has always been a loose cannon he tries to come off as politically enlightened member of the media but in reality he just a hack trying to revive his failing career and will do anything for publicity but attacking the pope thats low even for bill. Im not catholic , or mega religios, for the most part but come on there has got to be a better way to entertian than to call all catholics pedophiles and the pope a nazi

Comment by Rita

I’m sorry, but I am sick and tired of hearing about the poop (not misspelled). I think Bill Maher was crude in his comments, but also I agree with them, and no I don’t watch his show anyway. Apologize for what? We all have a right to our opinion. In mine we left England to get away from the Catholic rhetoric. I watched a program on the LINK channel several months ago. In the report they talked about the molestation of children by priests. The catholic church actually hid some of these pedophiles in Rome. A letter was sent to Rome by an investigating officer from Arizona and the letter was returned unopened to him from the Vatican. Priests were moved from one church to another or transferred to third world countries, where the Catholic Church thought people had no recourse in reporting the pediphiles. When a grandmother reported the priest for molesting her grandson, she was the one who was rediculed by the people, not the priest himself. The so called pope was the one who initiated doctrine, whereby the victim was the one ordered to keep silent regarding the molestation. Trust this man? I don’t think so. What other church is able to pay out billions for restitution in molestation cases? Whats with all the gold and jewels at the Vatican? I don’t believe Jesus preached for gold and jewels. Seems to me he wore sandals and plain robes to do his preaching. Wasn’t it the Catholic church who helped some of the Natzi’s escape to South America? Wasn’t it the Catholic Church that burned people at the stake for being a so called witch? Wasn’t it the Catholic Church that tortured and killed people for being so called heritics? I don’t believe Lutherans have that kind of history. The Catholic church is where people can go into a little booth, submit a confession, say a few hail Mary’s and all is forgiven. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. Only God can forgive your sins. I’m not bowing and kissing the pope’s ring. He’s not God! Doesn’t Fox News have anything else to report?

Comment by John

Bill Maher has every right to feel the way he does, and to also speak his mind. However, even though the Constitution guarantees that no government entity, at any level, may take legal action because of his comments, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have to accept the consequences of the things he said. HBO is not the government, and therefore, they are free to respond in whatever manner they see fit. Further, HBO, as a corporation, has a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders, and if Mr. Maher’s remarks cause HBO to lose money, or are otherwise detrimental to the corporation, which does seem to be the case, HBO absolutely should fire him. In the final analysis, it’s a business decision.

Dear Alisyn…Bill should stay on the air…the more he opens his mouth, he being representative of eliteist liberals, the more the extreme left reveals their true identities and beliefs.

Obama and Hillary are continuing to engratiate the American public with their impromtu sentiments…let them all talk themselves into extinction.

By the way…You are an exceptional professional.

Shalom Aleichem, Mark P.

Comment by Bob Smith

I don’t understand why you Catholic are getting so mad… you only go to church on Christmas and when the pope comes to town. And you did have a bunch of priest that did molest a bunch of kids that a fact and the Pope (before he was Pope) did try and cover it up.

Hi Ali,

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I say this in relation to Don Imus, I can’t really say anything good about him either, but he was fired for his comments. The Liberals truly do live by a double standard.

A word about the rash of videos of girls beating up other girls. I have a 17 year old daughter… with that said I would like to ask a question that no one, including Fox News, is asking and should be asking;

Where are the parents of these girls?

Blame it on the schools, modern technology, etc, etc, but proper behavior begins in the home and any good responsible parent would not find their child doing things like that.

I think the Pope’s visit to the United States was a very positive one. Just as the Pope has free speech in the US so does Bill Maher. I don’t watch his show because I don’t believe the non sense he and others talk about. He is a so called comedian however I don’t see any humor. In some countries you can be jailed(Russia) for speaking your mind. Not there yet. Are we? I think this is all about political correctness and the media seems to be driving this. We can make national news now if we say anything that is considered racial or gender hate. Dosen’t matter if it is true or not. Only certain indiviuals have the right to be Racial or Gender bais according the the News Media now (Rev Wright, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, Rosie O’Donald and others. Come on FOX be the leader in the anti-PC revolution. I suggest that one way all of us “normal folks” can get away from all of this PC is to turn off the News Channels. WOW that would shake things up.

Note: I have dropped HBO programming.

Why do people get upset when the village idiot speaks his mind?

Comment by Jimbo56

We live in a society that stands for free speach. Bill Maher should be free to say what he wants. However, like Imus, if the public is opposed to his comments, HBO will have to review and determine if it is economically viable to keep him on. Make no mistake about it, Imus was let go because Sharpton had gotten sponsers to back out of the program. Money is how you get the attention of networks, sponsers start bailling on Maher and the show ceases to exist.

That’s my take on the business side. However, on the political side, I find it ironic how leftist such as Bill Maher can continue to draw an audience. He claims to have an openminded enlightened view. Ironically, were we to make some comments about the behaviors of Barney Frank or the practices of the late Gerry Studds, Maher would be out shouting about intollerence and homophobia. He can’t have it both ways.

Comment by OJT

Good Morning,

I have not been able to play the after show video for several days now. Fox problem or problem here?

Comment by sandy

I am a Catholic and am saddened by what some of the priests did but to paint all Catholic clergy with the same brush is sad. Granted, in the past many things that we now find despicable are being openly discussed and corrected.

There was a time that anything that was an embarrassment such as mental retardation, disfigurement, drunkeness was covered up by society as what you do. Wives were abused but their husbands were given free passes because “man was head of the household” and now we do things differently. It wasn’t right then and isn’t right now, but when we try to correct the wrongs, why keep bringing is up. Not every priest is a pervert just like any policeman, fireman, teacher, minister, and on and on who was found to be an abuser or pervert means all of their kind are bad. Remember the term “moving forward.”

It seems that we should really practice forgiveness for our own sakes and punish the offender and be glad that corrections are being made as well as some retribution to show the remorse one feels. Jokes about shameful acts by religious groups, racial groups, ethnic groups are funny. It’s sad.

Bill Maher should be run over by the Pope-Mobile!!!!!

Comment by Adam

Why should Maher be fired for pointing out the fact that the Pope is a former Nazi who has a documented history of covering up child molestation? Everything he said is 100% based on FACT. What Maher said is correct … if the Pope was a CEO of a major corporation covering up thousands of cases of sexual abuse, he would be thrown in jail. Why should the Pope get treated differently because he’s the leader of a multi-national religious organization as opposed to a multi-national business organization?

Comment by Jim Squires

I personally was not offended by Bill’s comments. The Catholic Church has alot of answering to do on behalf of the Child Molestations!! As for firing Bill that’s an HBO choice.

I’m curious about the steps taken by the Pope to eliminate the obvious and large problem with his people?

It’s also very obvious that some of your respondents have never seen Bill’s show, although I find alot of things to disagree on I also enjoy the thought provoking discusions. Alot of intelligent guests have appeard on his show and not all guests are in total agreement with him.

I must admit Bill O’Reilly’s show at times give me cause to wonder about him and some of his guests.

Comment by Nora

Fired? No. I don’t get this weird nonsense where people are all “offended” by something some second rate “celebrity” says on some dumb TV program. Have these oh-so-offended ones no lives at all? Do they think the Pope even knew about this or would care had he been informed of the comments? Probably not. He’d probably pray for the guy. If Bill Maher’s comments honestly caused deep personal pain to someone, they can always YouTube their response to him, or write HBO a letter, or whatever, if that makes them feel better. Thing is, no one has a right to not be offended in this country. When did American’s all turn into such a pack of tender little flowers all of a sudden, anyway? The atheists are offended by this, and that poor, sad, blinky, twitchy Bill Donohue is offended by everything, and the rural Pennsylvanians are offended by that, and Bill Reillly is offended by the other thing, and on and on and on. Get lives, people. Grow up. If something offends you, move on. Look at or listen to something else. You really do have control over your own actions.

I watch Bill mahr every friday night, while i dont always agree with his standings on some issues, i watch him because he makes me laugh. Yea sure sometimes he grinds people right down to nothing but i pay for hbo so i can hear people say what ever they want, not what some coporation is making them say. I will cancel hbo if they fire or suspend bill mahr. Lets not be rediculus….. plus the media has never played the whole sceene, he stated a fact. yes the pope did swear to hitler, but of course he had to anybody that has a brain knows that..The media did the same thing to the obama words, the american people are smarter than that and we dont need the media telling us what should make us mad.

Comment by Ruth

Frankly, if you don’t like it, you just change the channel. If the ad revenues go down, the show will be pulled. I’m pretty aggravated with the whole “if they say something you don’t like, fire them” routine. Vote with your channel changer.

This country has truly gone way too far down the politically correct highway.

Everytime someone gets their feelings hurt, someone is insulted, or someone says something that is ‘just not nice’ - the first thing that is yelled is fire them. What happend to expressing feelings, thought, and ideas? If everyone must adhear to this PC attitude, then we are a generation away from no differences of opinions or thoughts because of fear. Kind of makes you think of something that happened sixty years ago…

No one in this country should be afraid of speaking their mind due to PC police and fear of losing their jobs or occupation. Lets get real as to where this is going, toughen up a little, and shrug things off that we may not agree with.

Comment by Randi Petrich

Hi, I think he should be fired.

Comment by Renee

Maher calling the Pope a Nazi was horrendous! I’m not even Catholic and I was offended by his words.

It is as much the Pope’s fault that there is child abuse among some Catholic priests as it was George Bush’s fault for Katrina. You cannot possibly know what is in people’s minds.

You know Al Sharpton was very vocal when Imus bad mouthed that woman’s college basketball team, is he asking for Bill Maher to be fired also?

It was so good to see the coming together of Americans during the Pope’s visit here, it was a good moment for the USA!

Where is your patriotism far-left? We don’t need change as Obama is pushing, we need to go back a few decades and live in Ronald Reagan times.

Bill Mahre has every right to his opinion- and every right to say it to his friends and family but I think hate speech is not allowed on the public or private airwaves.Certain curse words are not allowed- certain dress is not allowed- so spewing ones own hatred into the public arena is not a freedom of speech entitlement. It is not only politically incorrect it is personally incorrect and like shouting FIRE is not allowed.
Bill Mahre is not funny- is not wise- is not handsome- is not nice-is in general not worth listening to- so please tell me why he is even on the air? Sad and he should be fired- he should be sent to job training and get some other line of work. He is simply not worth even these words-
fire HIM please, Thanks,

Good day Alisyn…re: Bill S…Congrats on your beautiful child. It does not mean that the parents were not paying attention. Children will do the most amazing things, wicked and nice, so one should be very careful when they go into the land of Not My Child…They would NEVER do that. Yes, they just might, and there you would be, with your mouth wide open, and totally astonished by their behavior and their choice to go outside of anything you ever told them was right and just and appropriate and…….most parents take their job very seriously and are devastated when these things happen…good day Tom (with the elegant last name) also…yes, I changed sites…are you there??? Nice new feature to your blog!

No, I personally don’t think Maher should be fired (by me anyway)..That should be left up to the folks @ HBO to do so…If there’s enough outrage (people canceling their HBO subscription) out there, HBO will no doubt let him go…$$$..I really don’t care one way or the other.

It’ll be interesting to see though just how this all plays out: Will there be enough folks so pisssed off by Maher’s comments that they’ll be willing to give up some of the great programs on HBO in order to push them into firing him?(It’ll take a lot) or… Will the offended sit back and expect HBO to fire him simply because they think it’s the right thing to do?…I don’t think the latter will happen..

It’ll all come down to the almighty $.

Anyway, I always get a kick out of Maher, because I look at him as this pompous ass who’s starring in some sitcom or something..He’s really irrelevant!

Has Bill Maher been scheduled yet for “Larry King”:? He’s always at his pompous ass best on his show!!

Lets be real here. Bill Maher was out of line, he is entitled to say what the church has done wrong.
As a catholic, I never say much but this time enough is enough.
If Bill M said any thing offensive towards African Americans, Jewish/Muslim leaders or anything
derogatory against Mohammed, he would be fired or beheaded!!!!!!
Hopefully he will be used as an example. He’s an idiot, There free speech.

Imus was fired because his insult was not politically correct. It is, however, politically correct to be anti-Christian. Maher is an elitist fool who thinks the rest of us are slobbering idiots. He should be ignored. Just change the channel and forget to change it back. Vote with your feet.

Hi Alisyn, again. re:Angela…we are given to believe that the “ranch” is not part of the Latter Day Saints, and I believe that to be so. They are not part of our society, except that they do receive compensation from the State..on the dole…their women are shared and shared alike by all the men and the going age is what?? thirteen or younger I believe. It is a wicked, evil, cult with no alliance to any religion at all. This has been carefully documented by those who have escaped their grasp. That is what we know. I hope they get them all. It is a very sad story. I think we all worry about the women and children coming out of this place and what will happen to them. We have a lot of respect for the communities living in harmony, and open to all, but, the “ranch” and other “ranches” like this through out our country, need to be looked at closely. That they receive compensation from the State, should give all the sheriffs out there grounds to go into these compounds, I would think.

Here is what I am thinking if I’m HBO. I totally am for freedom of speech, without question. But if a host says something that offends sooo many people, and all of a sudden, thousands of people drop their subscriptions because of it….Welll then the decision to cut Maher would be a financial one, not necessarily a decision over freedom of speech. Everyone in this country is entitled to that, but those that “cross the line” sometimes have to be ready for the consequences…It is all about the free market…let the people decide…If you remember the ABC comment Maher made….it took them over 1 month to fire him…the ratings got to a point where it was imperative to kick him out…will this be a similar situation…Whose knows, only time will tell! Does anyone agree/disagree!???

Maher adds nothing constructive to the politcal or religious debate in this country. He is loudmouth “shock jock” comedian, nothing more. His comments about the Pope are an embarrassment to his employer and to America. That he has a forum to dispense drivel is a travesty. HBO should cancel his program immediately.

Comment by Sean

He should absolutely not be fired. I am a christian and went to catholic school all my life. After the scandal with the priests molesting children, I’ve lost total respect for the catholic religion. Michael Jackson got away with doing what he did because he paid, whoever was accusing him, off. The catholic religion did the same. WHY couldn’t the priests go to jail where they all should be right now.

Comment by Jeff

I’m catholic and I am ashamed by my religion. It does not offened me in one bit what
Bill Maher said. Its the truth and its about time someone had the B*LLS to say it.
I am not really sure about this but if you follow someone and the words of their god
without questioning it ,isn’t that a cult?
The way I understand the Bible , that it’s been translated numerous times and some
cultures didn’t have word to correctly tanslate them 100% in the meaning of the words
that were used. It should be questioned.
And ,no i don’t think the Pope should be arrested, but he did write the letters telling the
people under him to cover up the abusses ,and I feel he should step down.

Bill Maher has finally proved to all of us that he is as shallow as a puddle and even more ignorant. He has no clue on this matter. He is an embarrassment to himself and an even greater embarassment to human beings possessing a more refined mind. Don’t particularly think that Maher’s IQ is above that of a CAVEMAN. If Don Imus and others before him can be fired for making a seeming disparaging remark about somebody or something, what is the reason for being ‘hands off’ on Bill Maher? I am not a catholic and don’t watch or listen to Maher normally, but I find this equivalent to disparaging a religion when we are going out of our way to ensure it doesn’t happen to other religions or ethnicities.

I do not think that he should be fired. It was a stupid thing he said but he is excercising his freddom of speech. Being a born again Christian. I personally did not like what he said, but he is entiltled to his own opinion. I tell ya what though, if those comments he made had been about any other religion-he would have gotten alot of backlash. The media in this country does not care what is said about Christianity in any form because the gospel of Christ strips away the facades of the natural man and exposes his sinful nature for what it is in the natual light. Bill Maher is a God-hater like alot of those people. His attitude is the norm of most all the far left media. It is really pathetic. I don’t hae him, just feel sorry for him. Hard to believe a man so intelligent can be so ignorant.

No I dont think he should be fired. Hard to believe someone so intelligent can be so ignorant at the same time. In the spirit of true Christianity- I FORGIVE YOU BILL MAHER.

Sweet Lady, The status of Maher’s innards is plastered on his face. You make your own conclusion. Had his target been a Black or a Jewish religious leader he would not only be fired but skewered and served as a distasteful appetizer. His comments about the Pope were disgraceful. His comments about the Lord Jesus were sacriligious. He will have to answer someday either to HBO, American Catholics or to the Lord. Answer he will. No smarmy comment or smart “ass” answer will save this “worm” from his just desserts. Pray for him. John A. Astorina, NYC

You people are riddiculus! You are all up in arms over what a man has said in a country where you are supposed to be able to say what you want but yet you flock to a man and a religion that has for decades took the innocents of our children and covered it up. You talk about Bill should be fired, the Pope should be fired! There are no words that can ever be said to match what those priest have done to those children and what the church has done to cover that up! You all should be ashamed of yourself; you are indirectly defending a phedophilla system!

To forgive him is one thing.
To continue to tolerate such behavior is another.
Forgiving someone doesn’t mean that they don’t have to face the consequences of their actions.

Maher’s comments about the Pope were no different in genre than the comments that Don Imus made about the Rutger’s Basketball player. Maher assumed that because Joseph Ratzinger was German and forced to be a part of the Hitler youth, that he was therefore a Nazi. And it is as insulting to refer to a German
