Rita Moreno’s Pica Dillo

Rita says this is an old Cuban recipe and it’s her favorite to serve at a big dinner party.  It’s basically a one-dish meal and it always gets rave reviews.  She warns that all of the measurements are to taste, not exact.  She says “Keep tasting!” while cooking and DO NOT USE SALT (the ingredients are salty enough)

– start with 1lb or 1 1/2 lbs of a combo of ground sirloin and pork

– Chop two bell peppers (Rita likes confetti-style, meaning combining green, red and yellow peppers)

– Use 1/2 a can of drained, chopped tomatoes (reserve the juice for use later)

– 1 large onion, chopped as finely as possible

Brown all those ingredients together in frying pan using high-end olive oil, the greener the better.  Rita uses a pastry blender to unlump the ground beef than tends to clump.  Then add:

– 3/4’s of a cup of sliced green olives (she combines two types: half stuffed with pimentos, half with jalepenos)

– 2 tablespoons capers

– 2 tablespoons raisins

– 2 tablespoons cilantro (or more if you’d like.  She says, “Keep adding, until you’re happy!”)

– add cumin

– add liberal amounts of crushed garlic

– sprinkle oregano over it (to taste)

– Now add some of that reserved juice from the chopped tomatoes (you want the mixture wet but not soupy).

– Make a pot of white rice.

– Serve Pica dillo over it

*For an extra special meal, Rita makes Chorizo Rice (add chopped chorizo, removed from it’s casing and sauteed, to the white rice) and sweet fried plantains.  Delicioso!!

The AtSS Tracks Down Their Family Trees!

Rita Moreno is Here!

The world famous Tony, Oscar, Emmy and Grammy award-winning Rita Moreno is with us this morning! She’s revealing our next big prize give away for our Breakfast with Fox&Friends sweepstakes (check out foxandfriends.com). There was confusion in the Greenroom when she thought SHE was actually being auctioned off. “Wouldn’t be the first time,” she cracked. I then clarified that, no, she was actually just autographing a dvd of “West Side Story” and “The Ritz” that we’ll be giving away. Rita will be appearing until April 5th at Feinstein’s at the Regency here in NYC if you’re in town.

Oh, and check back in later because I’m getting her very favorite family recipe for you. She claims it’s the perfect dinner party dish! I’ll post it soon.

Should Hillary Drop Out?

If you watched the 6am show today, you know some senior Democratic politicians are calling on Hillary to drop out of the race.   They say it would bring the party together, stop the bruising battle.  But is that premature?  She still has a double-digit lead in Pennsylvania — voters don’t go to polls there until April 22nd.  Don’t voters in Indiana and North Carolina count?  Your thoughts?

E.D. Hill in the House!

E.D.’s making a special appearance on F&F this morning.  We just chatted about what a shock to her system that 4am wake-up call was.  Now that she’s hosting her 2pm show, she says she hasn’t set an alarm in a year.  I’m getting the distinct feeling she doesn’t miss the lack of sleep.  She looks alarmingly well rested.  Must be nice…

Open Blog Friday!

Here are some suggestions:

– Weigh in on the story we talked about at 6:50 (edt).  It’s the plan in Eugene, Oregon to train restaurant workers and store clerks how to make African-American Olympic athletes feel welcome and comfortable this summer.

– Do you know Barack Obama’s religion?

– Hilary Clinton fight with Nancy Pelosi

– or questions for Howard Stern’s girlfriend?  (she’ll be on the show later)

Parents who Prayed

The parents of a girl in Wisconsin may face murder charges for praying for their daughter instead of getting her medical treatment.  11-year-old Madeline suffered from a treatable form of diabetes.  As she grew sicker and weaker with nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst and loss of appetite, her parents prayed for her recovery rather than taking her to the doctor.   Thirty days later, Madeline died.   What should happen to her parents?  What should happen to the other three children in the house?
