Alisyn in the Greenroom

Coffee, Tea or…?

People sure feel attached to their coffee.   I never drank it in the morning — until I started this crazy shift.  Our email inbox filled up when Steve asked the question: which coffee do you like best?  This query was prompted by the major Starbucks decision to close all it’s shops ACROSS THE COUNTRY for three hours today to “re-train” (or as I call it “train”) their barristas better.  So, will you be:

a:  devastated

b:  sleepy

c:  indifferent

d:  running to Dunkin Donuts

And how will you spend those three hours today that you won’t be waiting in line at Starbucks???

For those of us who are older than you kids, 5:30 is after my coffee time. I drink my coffee black and early. I get it from my coffee machine. I have been to Starbucks only once in a while.

I will just run to Wegman’s in Williamsport, PA and get my hazelnut java fix.

I’ll spend it drinking the far superior coffee at McDonald’s…………and trying to catch a glimpse of the Weather Goddess :)

That’ll keep you alert.

Starbucks closing wont hurt me a bit. In fact it will be great to navigate strip mall parking lots without haveing to deal with the drive thru line blocking parking spaces.

Alisyn I know the story line was about Republicans voting in the Democratic Primary, but Gretchen stated Independents voting for Obama. In the primary you can only vote once, but you can vote in either primary.

Here is a link to the explanation and I believe its paragraphs 6 & 7

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Link? Looks like somebody needs a little more coffee.

Ali aka Owli,

Indifferent. I heard that a soldier or Marine in Iraq sent a request to Starbucks for some coffee and got a “nasty-gram” back stating that “they” (whomever they is/are) opposed the war.

This prompted Boca Java to come to the rescue. A campaign began to send coffee to the “front.”

I would not spend a dime in Starbucks.

Maybe you could apply the “Truth-O-Meter” to this.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Great idea!! I’ll look into it.

Hay Ali, ya know ya told me a couple days back ya couldnt have red eye on f*f due to workin the censors to hard so how about ya go back for us!!!! oh and gimmie my coffee!!!!

Comment by Rae

Doesn’t make a difference to me. I enjoy my Maxwell House at home. And I drink coffee all day.

Comment by rob

Honestly,

I’m in the IT field (notoriously one of the biggest coffee consuming industries) and I could care less if starbucks was closed for 3 hours! I’ve got a coffee maker at home, 8 gas stations on my way to work, a grocery store next to my office, and I’m sure the country will survive!

(Besides, Dunkin Donuts coffee tastes better and doesnt have a 800% markup on it!) :)

So, I guess my answer would be D.

The people that are going to go crazy because of the starbucks closing more than likely have other addictions too.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

8 gas stations on your way to work? How far is your commute??

Good Morning Aly!

I’m a bit indifferent on this one as we brew our cups of joe in the morning before heading into the office. I am concerned about several people I work with as I’m not sure they can function without a Starbucks coffee in their hand….production may slow tomorrow!

Welcome back to Steve and hello to Gretchen and Brian. You guys are our Starbucks shot in the arm each morning.

Oh, and Toba, I’ll be home Friday…call me. : )

Make it a great day,
Christy

Good Morning Alisyn,

Ali aka Owli,

I sent a reply but it did not get posted.

Indifferent. I was always opposed to spending $3 to $5 on coffee, especially when one samples the great coffee at WaWa or Sheetz.

When I learned that Starbucks (or one of their employees) refused to send coffee to the “front” I knew my personal Truth-O-Meter was correct.

This prompted a campaign by Boca Java to send coffee to the front.

I would not spend a dime on Starbucks.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Sheetz? Where are those?

Comment by Dan H.

Alisyn,
I’m sleepy and indifferent! Don’t touch coffee especially in the morning(too much caffeine)…which is probably why I’m sleepy. Always been a water drinker, somehow I think I’m making a healthier choice. Which is why it’s alright to always eat dessert right?

C) Indifferent

I’m not a coffee drinker, but Starbucks does have a good Chai. Starbuck’s Anti-War/Anti-Troops attitude makes me avoid them the vast majority of the time.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

I’m hearing a theme here

Comment by Michael

I walk right past a Starbucks as I make my way to the office each morning. Then I get a fresh cup of Foldgers that costs me 10 bucks every three months.

Comment by Mark, Sheboygan

Dear Alisyn, you know I had gotten so sick and tired by being treated like an illegal alien in Starbucks that I found a great little Mom & Pop serving good coffee and a great bagel. The last time I was in a Starbucks, I reminded the cashier that giving them my money for their coffee was not my priviledge.
I do not know if additional training will matter to employees of Starbucks…the employee have to want to deliver good customer service.
So to answer your question….I will be exceedingly indifferent.

Shalom Aleichem, Mark P.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Mark,
You’re so right. I had to remind them today to give me my COFFEE. This is not a joke.

Comment by Mike Malone

I have never bought anything at a Starbucks and only been in one one time. I think I can survive the 3 hrs of their being closed.

Dave Ramsey this morning left out a very important part about the tax prebate from the gov’t. He didn’t mention that people must file a Federal tax return to get the money. Even those people that would not usually have to file will not get the money if they don’t file. So please everyone file a tax return so you will get your money.
Dave should have told what people need to do to get the money before he told people what to do with the money.

Can we set aside the ground rule for this morning so we can knock Steve for making fun of this wonderful blog run by the beautiful and charming Alisyn?
I think Steve is just jealous that Alisyn has a blog and he couldn’t spell blog. :)

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

Hey Mike,
Wasnt that the very first point that Dave made? I know it was Steve’s first question.
And you’re right about Steve. He spells it glob.

or……?” Ali :) I have to wonder why people complain about $3 gas and willingly pay more than that for a cup or dose of coffee. If I could afford it, liked it and could hustify it I might drink it then.

I actually complain about both. I’m fair and balanced.

Dunkin Donuts rules! Love ‘em!
Do you suppose Starbucks’ is closing for 3 hours across the nation to save $$$$$? Didn’t FOX report several weeks back how Starbucks’ was closing many of their stores across the country? Maybe this is a training day but it could be a test in disguise.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

They save money by closing? Interesting business model.

in response to eddie’s comment. i agree. $3.20/gal for gas, but $5-6 for a cup of coffee is okay?

new rule i propose: if you pay at least the price of 1 gallon of fuel on a cup of coffee, you no longer have the right to complain about the price of fuel.

Comment by Ron Ouellette

Good Morning Ali,

Starbucks should close permanently. I am hardnosed coffee addict. I have 3 or 4 cups before I even leave the house in the morning (of course while watching you guys). I stop at Dunkins on the way in for another tasty brew. It is far superior, and I don’t have to listen to the pretend coffee drinkers order thier speciality so called coffees.

I agree with Taimat earlier- what has happen to Paige. Miss her on the weekends. I know you won’t give an answer but just curious

Tell Richard Simmons that I’m working out right now to Sweatin to the Oldies VHS Tapes!!!!!!!! He is the only thing that works for me!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Debra

I love Starbucks coffee, but agree with others that this is a marketing ploy…and a pretty good one at that.

About that Mom who went on strike - I feel for her, it looks like she is taking some drastic measures to shock her kids into behaving better.

However, being a former kid and a current Mom, I know that these problems don’t usually occur over night. We don’t have enough background info on this family to form a proper opinion of the situation. But in most cases, there is a HISTORY of a lack of discipline in the home before the kids get to this point.

We serve Starbucks coffee at the restuarant I work at (Black Angus) Personally, I find it bitter and overpriced.

However, here in Phoenix the price has jumped to $10.75 a can????

Yikes……..

Well, I live in Montana and Starbucks seem to be disappearing around here anyway. Too foofy for our rugged tastes, I guess.

I have my fiancee in Alberta send me Tim Horton’s. Best coffee in the world.

If there is any Tim Horton’s executives looking in here — Please open a store in Billings!!

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

And if there is a Tim Horton’s executive looking, please send me some for “research” purposes.

Comment by Jerry

In response to Ali aka Owli, I don’t know if Starbucks ever actualy did that response to the Marine, I do however know that Bocca Java did send us as much coffee as we needed while I was in Iraq. The first month we were there. We recieved a large box filled with a variety of coffee’s. Then they sent us more. A year later we still had coffe we hadn’t used yet. Of course all of the popular flavors were gone. Not to mention we had a Green Beans coffee shoppe on the base, as their are many throughout the military. Latte’s or Frappies we were covered.

As a native New yorker living in this small town, my prediction regarding the 4 month old Starbucks we have here is that i will be in the minority of those that will be effected by this afternoon’s closing.
For one thing, most people here are still trying to figure out what Starbucks is and why they charge so much for their coffee and the second, most employees at this Starbucks are still trying to figure out what Starbucks is and why they charge so much for their coffee. Unfortunately it may take several days of closures for the employees to learn the preparations of the various drinks that are offered.
I will be drinking home brewed Dunkin Donuts coffee i purchased for just such emergencies.

For your sake, let’s hope they never figure it out so your town is not overrun with them.

Comment by J.G. McNally

I agree with an earlier comment from Bill21782. I read about Starbucks refusal to send coffee to the troops in Iraq because they supported neither the war nor the troops who fight in it. For that reason, I will never support Starbucks. They can stay closed forever as far as I am concerned.

Comment by Eric

Alisyn,

I just make my own coffee at home. I sleep a little longer not having to wait in line at some expensive coffee shop. I get the same zip with less hassle.

However, I am sure the prices at some of these coffee shops can sure wake a person up.

An extra half teaspoon of instant works for me. . . .with real cream. . . not this half & half stuff. Starbucks is WAY OVERPRICED. And they have the gall to have a tip jar next to the cash register.

Comment by Bill21782

Sheetz are in MD, PA, WV, VA. They are competitors with WaWa. My wife and I go to OCNJ on occasion in the summer. That is how I learned of WaWa. Brown’s on the boardwalk down my 1st street is good too. Delicious donuts as well.

Comment by Tiamat

Aly - Apparently, Howard Schultz didn’t put enough caffeine into your latte … NoLa?? Nope … More like north of the home of Starbucks, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Page Hopkins, FEMA Region X headquarters … and south of your former high school years … And in the flight path of the DreamLifter … ;-)

This area is sooo hopped up on lattes & caffeine … There is literally an espresso stand across the street from the local cemetary / funeral home …

If you want your coffee to have more of a jolt to it … Either boil it or make it in a perculator … And use a lighter roasted bean … The more time the water is in contact with the coffee grounds, the more caffeine is extracted into the water … The longer the whole beans are roasted, the more the caffeine is roasted AWAY (& won’t be available to the water) …

Comment by Bill21782

Jerry thanks for the info on Starbucks and the supply of coffee to the front. AC will not have to feed that into the T-O-M. Thank you for your service to America.

Comment by Gwen in Mississippi

Never have bought Starbucks–Never will. We are a military family, so anyone who doesn’t support our troops doesn’t get my support. Also, the fact that they charge an arm and a leg for a cup of coffee doesn’t help either. If they supported our men and women in uniform, I’d support them in spite of their high prices. I make my own Folgers, or stop by the McDonald’s on the way to work. But if I even hear a rumor that you don’t support our troops, I won’t buy from you until that rumor is completely proven false to my satisfaction.

God bless our military!!

Good morning Alisyn, you’re looking lovelier than ever today…I rarely drink Starbucks, way over priced and actually not that tasty. I drink at least 8 cups a day (I’m retired) and usually make a special blend I purchase at a local coffe house. BTW, just got back from Vegas and they are still talking about your pole dancing adventures. Saw Bette Midler’s opening night at Caesars Palace and she was great.

Comment by Mathew

Alisyn,
Maybe it would be interesting to have people tell us about their experiences with the Starbuck Service! I don’t believe the shut down will help because it seems that the problem with their service is one of attitude of the management. Once again, change must happen from the top-down. Not from the bottom-up.

PS
I am with those who wouldn’t spend money there because of their apparent disdain for our troops. One of which is my son. An infantry Marine.

I work in a small town in North Carolina and the McDonald’s here just started serving iced coffee and I am addicted. I drink two or three Hazelnut Iced coffee’s a day. So, Starbucks closing won’t bother me; you are right, the customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Comment by JOHN MLLER

WE MAKE OUR OWN COFFE AT WORKAND IT’S PRETTY GOOD CONSIDERING, SO STARBUCKS CLOSING WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON OUR ORGANIZATION…ANDBY THE WAY ALLYSON IS TOTALLY HOT

Comment by Kathy in Texas

Okay Alisyn you found my vice of choice. I admit it I am addicted to coffee, I need a fix every day and not just one cup. Here is what I do, I buy Walmart’s Arabica Coffee. It is wonderful, much more smooth than other brands out there. When I have money to kill or we are shopping I do go to Starbucks, but there is no way I would spend that daily. I like the idea of Starbucks just not the cost of it.

Comment by David Zeiders

No impact what so ever. My favorite coffee is the “free coffee” provided by my employer. I have had Star Bucks and quite franky do not under stand what the hoopla is all about. It is over priced and really does not taste very good. Also, most of the people who go to Star Bucks act snooty when they are in there. I guess it is something in the coffee that brings that side of a person out of them. if I wanted an ice cream float, then I would go to A & W.

Alisyn,
Terrific interview with Dave Ramsey this morning.. However, I was hoping you’d ask him about us procrastinators out here who perpectually file our returns late…Is there a time limit set on filing tax returns in order to receive the so called, “rebate”?…Must they be in by 4/15?..No extensions allowed?…I’m thinking it wouldn’t matter, but I havn’t actually heard anyone say so.

The next time you have Dave on your show could you ask him?…Thanks.

Best coffee:

1. “Seattle’s Best”

2. “Starbucks”

3. “Dunkin’ Donuts”

Love your show!

Comment by Dave

That Starbucks rumor regarding the truth has been circulating on the Net for over a year. It’s completely false.

Starbucks closure won’t affect me as I don’t drink it that late in the day.

As for my preference…. Mocha Grande with whipped cream!

Alisyn, what duties would I have to perform as your “wife.” LOL
