Your intern attends a typical college where only one point of view is encouraged, indeed, tolerated. Fonda’s comment is just further evidence of the destruction of our culture of civility. Everything is accepted today, nothing should shock us about this. Just listen to what is heralded as “keeping it real” rap lyrics, look how we award drug addicts with Grammy awards, witness the glorification of celebreties having babies out of wedlock by plastering their faces on the cover of magazines with accompanying detail of how “wonderful” it all is. Dropping a vulgarity on natonal TV is mild by comparison.

traitor Fonda to clean up her language before going on the air. Now we see why Ted divorced her.
He was shocked and appauled by her vulgarity. I hate to hear the word she used c word as I
heard someone say but she is just nasty. Who really wants to hear what she has to say. The View
must really be hurting in ratings again to get this type of recognition for her bad actions.

One more thing. I hope that the News Industry will stop and look at what there part is in the broadcasting such a horrible event that has been happening to our schools and colleges and university’s. Well broadcasting is fine but please don’t give any kind of recognition to the gunmen

Civility should never be sacrificed for ratings. Many people have children with them in the room when they watch Morning shows and using words like that can have consequences. Does anyone want their five or six year old child using that word with their teacher or blurting it out loud in a public setting. To many of us today are willing to accept behaviors we know are wrong or allow others to teach our children to use language or accept behaviors we all know are crude, rude and bad for us culturally. You can be funny on television without using certain words or acting like you were raised in a bar. Alisyn does it every day, so do Steve and Gretchen, you can be cutting edge without being foul mouthed, crude and lewd.

Yes it seems that society as a whole is becoming more desensitized to the use of profanity over a period coincident with the increasing violence on prime time TV and reduced discipline in our homes and God being taken out of our schools and public buildings. Question is, how do we handle it?

What’s more disturbing is pervasiveness of this sort of language. I’ve used my share of colorful language, being a Vet and all, but it’s permeated our society now. I hear 10 year olds with worse mouths than any of the guys (and gals) I used to serve with.

It all boils down to parenting I’m afraid, and too many folks aren’t willing to make that commitment. They’re perfectly happy with the sex, pregnancy and childbirth part… just not the hard work that follows. Which, by the way, is the reward to those of us that embrace parenthood.

Say if a personality, let’s use Ann Coulter, and she was being interviewed by Viera, and they were talking about Hillary and Pelosi and the c word “slips” out in the context of the interview, do you really think the reaction would be the same? That people are making too much of this, and we have bigger things to worry about? Cursing is very offensive to me. I enjoy certain shows on television but it offends me to hear God’s name taken in vain, so I change the channel. Why cant we just say what we mean without putting that extra spin on it, Gaggummit.

I remember the first time I heard a curse word on television: it was Maude and she said the s. o. b. word. I was a kid, and slapped my hand over my ears, I am sure my eyes bugged for days!

This is an excellent example of making a big deal out of nothing. While it seems that society is more comfortable with using swear words, Jane Fonda wasn’t just saying the word for no reason. It is the title of a monologue that she opted not to do, which came up while discussing her career. Regardless of how common swearing has become or what I think about Jane Fonda, people are reacting to only half of the story – a story that is not even actual news.

In this era of political correctness, only the politically correct can say anything about anybody at any time. Any conservative that said what Janie said would be asked to apologize. Once the apology was issued, it would be declared insincere, with a demand for a honest apology. Eventually, after the PC crowd got all of the mileage out of the issue, they would demand a resignation/firing/boycott…you name it. And they would get it! I fear that Janie is a c-word.

I rarely watch the Today Show(I usually watch FOX), but if I had been and Jane Fonda was announced as the next guest, the station would have been changed IMMEDIATELY. There is no excuse for some of the language that is used. I don’t care how “everyday” it is. What you say in your own home is one thing, but I don’t like being exposed to that kind of language. I used to work in the dorms at an amusement park in the summer(I’m over 50), and if one of the “kids” said something I didn’t appreciate, I’d tell them and they usually apologized. The “f” word was VERY common.

What did they think when having Hanio Jane on. Sorta gets attention to herself. Being that I am a Vet from the Vietnam area I would like to see her stand trial for Aiding and Abetting our enemy. That would bring the attention. Heres hopping that abc gets their find for the so called slip.

It seems as if society is comfortable with swearing and using profanity. The bible clearly states that what is in your heart comes out of your mouth. My wife and I teach our children not to speak words of distruction. Also, James 1-26 states “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. It’s even hard for me to find a suitable TV program to watch with my children during the weekend.

Your intern is wrong. Maybe in his liberal college bubble the word isn’t a curse. But I’m in my 20s myself, and the c-word ranks right up there with several other four-letter words that are not appropriate for polite company. Appalling.

I can not believe the news coverage this is making. Big woo. It was a slip. It wasn’t like she was calling someone that. It may not be a curse word but there is no denying that is a very offensive, and as you put it, a vulgar word. That word is only used in an insulting manner. In all my life (now 44 yrs old), I’ve been in thousands of conversations and never was that word used in casual terms. Hello. I hope you are well. The entertainment industry has become disgusting. Unfortunately, many of our young people only know the history and morals the industry represents, and I say this as a high school math teacher. Entertainment personalities act as though they are elitists and their success transcends into knowledge concerning geo-politics and environmental issues, when many, in my opinion, could not think their way out of a paper sack. But then this is societie’s fault for idolizing them the way we do.

Regardless of context…use by Ms. Fonda of “that” word only identifies her for what she is! Freedom of Speech DOES NOT mean we do not have responsibility to use appropriate language. Just because I know the word/s doesn’t mean I have to use them! I see no difference in speaking the word or writing the word. So writing the “f” word “ing” – well, you might as well spell it out and say it out loud. Don’t we have a language that has inoffensive words that can be used? We so demean ourselves by slipping sexually derogatory words into “conversations”.

This has nothing to do with being prudish. I have worked around the construction industry for many years. I’ve heard things that would blister your ears. There are just some words that should not be used, and this particular word is one of them.

Shortly after fox cable news started I quit watching all network tv except our local fox station. Today, that is still the habit. Fox news all day and them fox local at night. What is the big deal? Bill O’Reilly says “SCREW” all the time. Does anyone not know what that means? Why is one combination of letters that means the same thing as another combination more acceptable than the other? This is just crazy. Does anyone not fill in the blanks when you type “scr*w you” instead of “screw you”? I see that it is okay, on here, to type “f-ing”. I don’t think people are making a big deal out of nothing by being upset that Jane Fonda would use severe profanity on the Today Show. The reason I got upset is because my kids were in the room and heard her and we don’t talk like that in our house. Plus, Meredith Veira laughed heartily after she said it which make it seem acceptable. So the point is, why people are upset is because we trust the networks to ensure that they won’t expose our families to filth during what’s supposed to be a family show or the morning news. And people ARE getting more and more crude and free in their speech, but where does it end? When is enough enough? Do you want to go to McDonalds and be asked if you want fu**ing fries with that? Of course one ‘knows’ what one means when they use words that refer to other things, the difference is you are not using words that offend others, there are still people in this country (thank God) that have morals and values that one might consider ‘good’.
The ‘c-word’ she used is considered derogatory, it is like calling a female dirt, or dirty, I know of no women that consider even a term that could be substituted for any other word in the human language. Some people use it to describe a female body part, but that isn’t really what women consider it. There are parts of society, the same ones that consider killing police, and others that maybe even look at them wrong as a word that has no meaning, but these same people use the ‘n-word’ almost as a fashion statement, but would kill a white person for using the same word…
One must make a choice in the direction that society should go, towards good, or towards bad, societies with good morals and values last longer than ones with poor/bad values.

Jane, what can you say? She has quite a media grabbing history. Jane is a woman of very poor taste! She married CNN’s Ted, didn’t she!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That word is NEVER acceptable in any public forum. It debases the speaker more than the target! Shocked – No, I consider the potty-mouth, anti-American source. Disgusted is more like it for the show to allow it.

My teachers always told me that people that talks that way are short on vocabulary. Maybe Jane should go back to school for language and broaden her vocabulary. I believe NBC should be heavily fined and Merideth should be warned and given time off for laughing at such a comment and not discontinuing the intervue. I have one consulation. Whether she believes in God or not I know for a fact that she will stand before HIM to answer for not just this one thing, but all things that she has done during her lifetime. All that’s important to them is that they get the attention they so direly need from the public and boy, did she get it! I think she may be regretting it now, though. I can maybe understand rebellion from young people, but Jane is way too old for that now. All the 60s hippies who refuse to stop living in the past, need to grow up for once and for all or continue to look like the idiots they are. And for those who criticize Red Eye for salty language and subjects (you’d ever hear the ‘C’ word on there), you have to remember that it’s on late at night when most children aren’t watching and not in primetime when Jane said that insulting word that no little girl (or woman) should ever have to hear. I am a Vietnam Vetern Disabled. In 1972 my Photo Sqyadron was within the three mile limit, which means active Combat for Navy personal. We were off North Vietnam, Haiphong Harbor to be exact when Ms Jane sat in a “Yak-Yak” gun (anti-aircraft gun). Ms Jane also visited the POW’s, including Senator John McCain. All the pow’s when they shook her hand stuffed into it tiny pieces of paper with their SSNumber on it Hopping she would bring it back to the States for their Loved Ones. But, Ms. Jane did not do that. She handed all of them to the Vietnese Colonel, who after she left proceded to beat three of these men, killing one, seriously injuring another and the third had his legs broken. So much for the “Heralded” Ms. Jane, aka “Hanoi Jane”. Now you know the true story. I just hope you have the integerity to follow-up and not let this woman get away with what she has contribited to. How would you FEEL????

I think Intern AJ is 100% correct. To me the “c-word” is like the “n-word” they are both very derogatory, but neither of them are “curses.” You could argue that they are worse then curses…

It must be a generational thing, because the last time I checked a curse is defined as, “a profane or obscene expression usually of surprise or anger.” I think the C-WORD falls under that definition. Love the intern, but tough to argue any other way.

Where I come from, ladies don’t use that word, at least where anyone else can hear it. The same goes for the f-word. It’s just another example of a female with a lack of lady-like characteristcs.

Some people never grow up. I remember writing cuss words down because it busted me up to see them in writing. Of course I was 10 years old at the time and eventually outgrew that silliness. Thats no lady, it’s jane Fonda, she may look like a lady and have all the eqiupment to go along with the title, but in the mind of this ole boy, she’s no lady. I’m sick and tired of women trying to act all big and bad. The greatest people in my life are all LADES, my wife, grand mother and only daughter, their feminine ways, kindness, caring, softness and just plain old goodness make these ladies the people I most admire. I have to agree with the “perspective” of the source. Hanoi Jane should probably be keeping a low profile. I think she’s done enough damage to this country. Why is it that slang words for female anatomy are considered “scandalous,” and everybody gets their knickers all up in a bind about them?

Consider something you virtually NEVER hear stated or asked in response: how many times on regular (let alone cable) TV have you heard the slang “d” and/ or “b” words in reference to the MALE anatomy (you know, the ones ALWAYS said in public, over the air waves, etc) without one iota of shame?

Discrimination is indeed alive, but it has flip-flopped and men are considered worthy of far less respect than women in our PC world (even by people who don’t consider themselves politically correct).

I have noticed this just in my short lifetime.

I told my kids when they were young that I knew they’d be out there swearing with the other kids because that’s what kids do behind their parent’s backs so if they were going to be doing that they could do it at home around me but they were NEVER to say the “C” word in our home or around me or at any other time and I found out about it. You should have seen (and to this day) the looks on their face’s when ever anyone says that around me. Their jaw’s drop down and eye’s about bug out of their eye sockets as they look back and forth from the person who said that to me and back to them and they say in a very stern tone, (No exageration here) “Ahh that word is the 1 word you NEVER say around my mom, EVER!” (And my kids are 27 and 32 now) I don’t watch the Today Show but I’ve heard some people on here and on GretaWire say thing’s like,”Meredith Veiera should lose her job or have here salary suspeneded” and that’s not right. Meredith had no control over what Jane Fonda spit out. Jane however is discustingand and should have her mouth washed out with soap, super glued, then stappled shut!

Jane was just giving the name of the skit she was asked to do. I just don’t see how that has caused such a uproar.

I find it interesting how many people on this blog have condemned Fonda for using the ‘C’ word, but then turn around and call Ms Fonda the same word and other derogatory words. How is it wrong for Fonda to use the word but ok for others to use the same word as an insult to Fonda?

Steve, I’m sorry you are watching such awful shows on TV. I have a remote and I change the channel so that stuff is not in my home. When my life was shorter I still didn’t like that language but at least I didn’t have to worry about constantly monitoring everything and making sure my kids and crappy TV were not in the room at the same time. I don’t even know what the B word for the male anatomy is and I don’t want to know. I guess my parents were able to teach me how to get along in the world in a socially acceptable way. Wendy, I’m not sure what you mean by stating that my parents “had trouble with me.” Actually that is one of the most fallacious statements anybody has made about me (I have been straight as an arrow: no drugs, etc…top of my classes in all grades…a Christian and CONSTANTLY helping others because that is the right thing to do).

Perhaps you misunderstood me.

My post is that people whine constantly about things shown or said about females, yet they ignore the fact that there is FAR more shown and said about males in our society today than women. As I wrote, the vulgar references to male private anatomy are EVERYWHERE, but if somebody makes one to female anatomy, heaven forbid.

As I was growing up, I watched some TV. One day (not even night, but day) I and my mother were watching PBS and what did we see but two men naked (full frontal) on regular broadcast TV(NOT cable, even).

This is the point: are we equal or not (I have NEVER heard a case of a woman in full frontal nudity during the day on PBS, let alone this issue about the words: who ever complained to their TV station about the ridiculous amount of times and contexts where references to male anatomy are used?)

There is something changing drastically in our society: if you are male or white, then you are less than any other of the options…why is that becoming more true with time?
