No! People who are here illegally don’t deserve any benefits of living here. They should all be deported and get in line to come here legally as millions of others have done.

I’m not really behind this whole tax rebate thing anyway. Why not just give us a tax holiday on our paychecks. That way people that are being taxed to death would get a slight break and those that don’t contribute would just continue as usual.

No, they should not be given the rebate. People who are here illegally…even those that have been here many years and have been paying taxes should not benefit. You need to ‘live by the LAW of the land’ to reap the benefits. Let’s use that money ( the total that would be sent to illegals) to work on a solution to help those people who have been here many years to become LEGAL! And then let’s follow ALL the laws already in place to help fix the influx if new illegals.

Anyway, NO the illegals shouldn’t get a rebate. This shouldn’t even be a question. But it actually reminds me of part of MY illegal immigrant plan. Aside from securing the border FIRST, with nothing else being on the table until that’s done, we obviously can’t deport 10-20 million people. I propose that we first go after companies with heavy penalties for hiring illegals (we saw some of that last year, but there needs to be a LOT more). Once companies are largely scared to hire because the penalties are too costly, we can bring the illegals out of the shadows by giving them some kind of paperwork. Not citizenship, but papers so we can keep track of AND TAX THEM! I maintain that they should be at least double, if not triple taxed, and NEVER entitled to any entitlements (social security, etc.)

Everyone wins… They get to live here and still send tons of money back to Mexico like they do now, but we know where these people are and we’re taking billions more from them. Could we eventually balance the budget this way? Now, I suppose after 5 or 10 years you could lower their taxes some, and maybe after 5 or 10 more, bring them to the normal rates and let them go through the process of trying to become citizens, but still stick them with a 1% “your welcome” tax for life (and again, have something written in that prevents them from EVER being eligible for entitlements, even when they are citizens).

You’re right, Al, it’s a tough issue. I understand that we are considering giving a rebate to millions of Americans who don’t have enough earned income to pay any taxes. If that is true, then why not give some to illegals who do pay taxes?

Whatever the answer, I believe Americans want there border secured! Then we can figure out what to do with the illegals already here.

This is a no brainer. What is wrong with those people in Washington???? Do they not get the hint??? “We’re mad as Hell and we’re not going to take it any more!”

Just when is our government, I repeat our govenment going to get its head out of their ass. Over 80% of US citizens do not want the Illegals here and all Washington wants to do is reward them. Illegal is Illegal and it is time Washington gets that message or we send them all packing also… Which just may be the best overall answer.

If they neglected to renew their visas, then they are here “ILLEGALLY”. The fact that they pay taxes has nothing to do with it. It’s their choice to continue to work without a visa (which I don’t agree with). But, to give an illegal alien, tax rebates or any other government benefits is insane!

The whole rebate thing is a mess already, but if these people did not see that keeping their legal status was important they have no right to a rebate. These people have committed a crime they are ILLEGAL we do not need to reward criminals we need to deport them. This whole debate is going to be a mute point because I figure that in November we are going to have a socialist, marxist, or a democrat (clinton, obama, or McCain) as president who will give them legal status.

I think you mentioned that these people are legal with ss #’s and just have not renewed their visa. If that’s the case, it seems most reasonable to not give them a rebate unless they renew their visa first. I think there would be a huge rush to the visa office!

Sometimes I wonder if people read before they have a knee jerk reaction. My friends consider me an ultra conservative but my answer is YES. Not yes but Hell Yes! As you pointed out in the question they came here legally and forgot to renew their visa. Did you get that fellow conservatives? They came here LEGALLY. Have you ever forgotten to renew your car registration? Don’t penalize them for doing the right thing and forgetting to renew. If they didn’t come here legally, then a resounding NO.

I would rather see a stimulous package that will replace the money lost in my 401K this last quarter.

If they do a tax rebate, then it should be for those only legally in the US and contributing. Good point if they are trying to stimulate the economy give it to someone that will send the money out of the states. Why else is it cheaper to send money by Western Union to Mexico then inside the US.

If they were in the U.S. under a valid Visa they would not be considered Illegal at the time. If they were working over the last few years, with a valid Social Security Number, they should be entitled to the rebate. If their visa is expired, they need to go back home, renew it, then come back and get their money.

I can’t beleive it would even be considered. These people are criminals and criminals do not have the rights of law abiding citizens.

There seems to be a huge gray area in our elected legislaters responsabilty to keep abreast of these situations “out of status” no money. Where do “in status” retiree`s fit into this. Perhaps this tax rebate money should be used on the national debt some day there will have to be an accounting for our borrowing.

So let me get this strait.

The country has a Gazzillion Dollars in debt

The housing sector is bottoming out.

Giants like Countrywide had to get help.

Mexican immigrants are flowing over our boarders in droves and we can’t control it.

So now, we are getting, checks, which in my case with my familiy will be around $1800 (assuming $1200 per couple and a couple of kids)

Then the Government took out a loan of another Gazzillon Dollars to be able to cash these checks?

I have an idea; lets take the titles to all the Government Vehicles out on the road and give them to Title Max, and that way, we can really have something hanging over our heads for the next 30 years.

Actually, I’m going to go to work today and pawn my Government laptop so I can spend a weekend in Florida with my wife and get out of the cold.

Anyone want an Army Helicopter, I’m going to put it on eBay so I can buy a house in Mexico on the beach. (That’s irony, isn’t it?)

If you came here legally, and want to stay here legally, then keep your paperwork up to date.

If you are employed, paying taxes and your paperwork doesn’t get completed, the government should notify employers that they are paying someone who is illegal and fine the employer if they it continues.

That way, the illegals aren’t paying into a system that hands out free money, to anyone with a job.

Ok Alisyn, but didn’t they go through all the bells and whistles to get here in the first place? How many ” born here” Americans who sit all day long watching TV and making no effort to be a productive member of society will benefit from rebate. Some who filed taxes and lost jobs are just sitting around waiting for their unemployment to run out and drooling over the $$$ coming in as a windfall rebate. The purpose of the money is not to benefit an individual. The purpose is to move the economy forward. It seems folks always want to look for something bad in every proposal. I have absolutely no problem with an immigrant who enters the country legally and I feel these people should be entitled to a tax rebate. Although any of them who have allowed their visas to expire should not receive their rebate until they have renewed their visa.

I would agree with the majority of people on the blog. Although I am against the stimulus package, as I don’t think it is going to ignite the economy the way people think. In any event, I agree that illegal immigrants, whether they were previously legal or not, should receive the money. Yes, they MAY BE paying taxes, but they also enjoy using our roads, schools, and national security. Giving illegal immigrants this money, will only further the resolve of other illegal immigrants.

If the illegal aliens came here legally, they only had to apply for extentions, which would have been approved if they lived by our laws and didn’t have criminal records. Illegal immigrants has become a major issue since 9/11 and millions have crossed our borders in the past 6 years. Since our government is always trying to appease everyone, I am sure some special consideration could be made to those who failed to reapply there visas. John McCain is not the answer, Romney is.

No. Name any other country that would be willing to give our citizens this right. I believe it is a way some politicians are buying votes. Illegals are not immigrants, immigrants come to America legally and obey the laws, illegals come to this country breaking the laws which to me is very disrespectful. The economy is bad because we are paying them to stay here because of all the aid given to them. Our own citizens are suffering on account of it. We need to enforce our laws and not make excuses for them. I have nothing against those coming to this great land of freedom legally. They should adapt to our rule of laws. Want to say great pics from Vegas, personally I was hoping to see some of that spandex but its ok still great pics. Anyway, I don’t feel like Illegal immigrants deserve anything. If anything I think instead of buidling a fence we should build a wall (Germany comes to mind) and put some people on that border that arent afraid to take a shot at someone. Something is gonna have to be done about immigration and giving people a slap on the wrist and sending them home isnt gonna cut it. For that matter would not hurt my feeling at all if we shut all our borders down.

I mean think about it, why couldnt the United States of America stop imports from every country, and build what we need here. That would solve problems of unemployment and help our economy. The U.S.A needs to mind it’s own business, stay out of other country’s affairs and take care of our own people.

Funny thing about immigrant “crimes” here in the U.S. As an ex-Navy man, I saw lots of military personnel (of all branches of the Service) commit crimes overseas. And there are numerous crimes committed in Mexico by American tourists. But nothing is ever mentioned about those statistics. People in glass houses….

By the way, those military personnel who committed crimes (like DUI’s, petty theft and such) in other countries served a very short military jail (in the brig, etc.) time and then went back to their jobs. Only to commit the same types of crimes in other Countries. You guys have had entire segments on illegals who drink and drive and then are released only to re-commit the crime. Again, what about American tourists and Service Personnel who are guilty of doing the same in Countries all over the World?

I don’t know why we are arguing about whether illegals should get this “stimulus package” in the first place. Nobody should get this money as it won’t fix anything. This would be like some bubble gum to patch a hole in a dam. It just doesn’t work. Where does all this “extra” money come from in the first place?

Some as pointed out have entered legally but may not have renewed visa. To get refund there should be some cross checking between visa’s and social security numbers. They then should be told before the money is released they must prove they are working, schooling, etc. plus renew.
The rebate was to used to boost the economy, have you ever walked into a store after pay day, or social security checks, yearly bonus’s guess what they spend and never save a dollar. The rebate would be used up on day one or two. The condition they have to meet is that they are working paying taxes out of thier check just like the rest of the rebaters.
The flaw is that the retired or disabled living on social security based upon what they qualified when they were able to work doesnt get any help. Grandpa, and grandma worked hard in the 50′5 60’s and were fortunate to earn 100 dollars take home not the five or six hundred now so there monthly check is social security . They may have 12,000 for the year but have a mortgage , property tax, medical expenses medicare payments and still have bills unpaid but they dont qualify, who needs what they too would spend it fast but with care.

I think they (out of status people) are entitled to the tax rebate since at one point, they did put in their time as employees someplace in the USA with their legal status intact. The out of status people have enough other restrictions to deal with as illegal aliens.

I feel like I live in the USA of Idiots. Legal is legal. I do not want my tax dollars that I’ve worked hard for going to anyone who is not a legal citizen. Get it - CITIZEN! We’re talking only taxes but how do these illegals skew the elections!!!! America wake up from your drugged state and take notice, we are acheiving third world status quicker than we thought!

If they have legitimate SSN’s and they’ve paid taxes in the past, then they are absolutely entitled to the “tax rebate”.. And it’s none of our business what they do with the money either; whether they buy a flat screen t.v. or send it back to their home country..Tough.

The stimulus package in itself won’t do much of anything, anyway..It’ll just prolong the inevitable recession, which in the end will only be worse..

So as it stands,

Illegal immgrants, who were legal but there papers have lapssed, are allowed to get the benefits of this program.

Unfortunately, disabled Veterans cannot because they don’t work and don’t file.

Rebates to illegals are a matter of political philosphy, not economics, and it really doesn’t matter financially because the government is just throwing money around as if it’s already the Confederate currency our dollar will become if its practices continue. The whole rebate thing is merely a way for Congress and the White House to make us feel good in an election year. It’s like a kind uncle giving you candy that he bought with a credit card, just after filing a bankruptcy proceeding. Why worry about a little more debt you never intend to pay off?
P.S.: Love your work, Alisyn. I like all of the Friends ensemble, even the occasional high-jinks of the off-camera crew, but you throw off so much energy I hardly need my two mugs of morning coffee to be wide-awake. Like you, I worked on the crime beat during a long career in journalism. But I never slept with an ear out for the telephone. Once the work day was over, I was more into a couple of beers with my newspaper buddies and then uninterrupted sleep.

O.K. As a U.S. citizen from birth, I’m not entitled to my full Social Security benefits b/c of something called the GPO/WEP but there are questions about illegals getting theirs? No way. First of all the whole rebate things is worthless unless every tax payer no matter how much you make gets one. Second, this is such a old school band-aid. Why doesn’t someone in Washington show they have brain, and make the “stimulus” worth something. Like maybe lower Corporate Tax. Maybe some of the companies that have left or our thinking about leaving the US might have a 2nd thought……….naw that would make too much sense.

I cannot understand what ‘rights’ illegal aliens seem to think they have. And I am shocked that so many of our elected politicians seem to think that these ILLEGALS should have these rights. The word is ILLEGAL! What is so hard about understanding that word. At this point in our economy, we should close our borders to everyone and concentrate on rebuilding the USA. Not worrying about these thousands of illegals coming in and demanding jobs, schooling, and everything else citizens of this country get. Already in Florida, where I live, an illegal Mexican woman got a job (yep, illegally), and hurt herself on the job. She was denied workman’s comp - of course - and now you can guess the rest of the story. A sympathetic lawyer is representing her, because she is suing her employer, who should not have hired her in the first place! Dear Alisyn…my problem exists with the so-called “stimulus package” itself. I read an article that posed the question, “Why did they collect the taxes anyway?…make Bush’s tax cut proposal(s) permanent to continue the flow of dollars through the economy.

Regarding immigrants…hell, if they’re paying taxes, and meet the requirements to receive the payments…then why not?

I feel there is a larger issue here…that the Fed thinks they’re doing us a favor by redistributing income…might as well be France or someother socialocracy.

Could we PLEASE call it a stimulus package and not a tax rebate? Half of the people getting a check did not pay taxes. If I showed up at Best Buy asking for the $100 rebate they were advertising on a new computer, they would insist I buy a computer. I’m not against the stimulus package, I’m just for truth in advertising.
