Top Ten (Commandments)

It’s 7:15am (Tue) and I’m getting ready to head outside our studio in midtown Manhattan to do the riskiest thing one can do in live television — ask unsuspecting commuters if they’ll talk to you.

You never know if they’ll talk or just give you the one-fingered New York salute. And if they do talk to you, it’s even riskier! They could be crazy, which makes for good TV, or annoyed, which makes for dull tv, or most likely in a rush and simply blow off the interview.

My question to them: can they name the Ten Commandments?

A recent survey finds that only 14 percent of Americans know them — but a whopping (get it?) 25 percent can name the ingredients in a Big Mac and the names of the kids in the Brady Bunch. We’ll see if our results differ. Gotta run outside, I’ll tell you the results later….

Alison should google the 10 commandments before she goes around asking people. Not to take the Lords name in vain. Is one of the 10. The police officer was right.

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

You’re right, Michelle!! He was absolutely correct.

Alisyn, this is a tradgic fact and I’m saddened that it was presented in such a jovial manner on Fox & Friends. This country is suffering greatly since we started stripping God from our schools (where the 10 Commandments used to be posted) and public places. All the Biblical commands from God are meant for our protection out of His love for us, just as a loving parent disciplines their child with a distinction between right and wrong for his/her benefit.

Stories like this should serve to frighten us back to our senses and help us realize that we have been picking up speed down the slippery slope of ignoring the Creator’s precepts. I hope that we will wake up to the fact that God would rather have us dwell on His provision for a holy, productive life out of thankfullness than wasting our precious time in front of a television.

Thank you,
Jim

Ali, what’s really sad to me is I’m in the majority that can’t name all the Ten Commandments without thinking really hard about it. But all the ingredients in a Big Mac, no problem! All the names of the Brady kids? Piece of cake! I guess I’m another victim of growing up in the 70’s.

Oh, and “The Ten Commandments” is also one of my most favorite movies. Charleton Heston, save us!!

You are great Allison!!

I knew both but I know they do not teach the commandments in RE- I am Catholic and had to memerize 10 commandments , 7 sacraments, definitions of Who made you etc etc. They just don’t do that anymore and I don’t think it is right. My kids had prayers and the sacraments to memorize but that was about it. I read them the commandments and talked about them but they didn’t have to memorize them. I guess I should have made them!!

Comment by Alisyn Camerota

What do you think about my suggestion Dolores: set them to a catchy jingle! Hasn’t it been proven that our brains retain a lot more information when it’s attached to music?

While watching this morning and getting ready for work my son walked in and began spouting off the Ten Commandments. I was very pleased. He got 8 out of the 10. He knew them right off the top of his head. I had to think about. He couldn’t name the Brady kids though. Not enough Nick at Night I guess.

Hi Alisyn! Thanks for doing this story. I think it is so important that we emphasize what we as a nation have lost by habitually turning away from God’s Word and the instructions in it. I just need to point out one thing. The version of the ten commandments that appeared on your show was the Catholic version, the one taught in their schools. If you examine Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 closely, you will see that they have changed the commandments. They remove the one which states, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God…” They essentially remove a commandment that would prohibit them from bowing down to images of Jesus, Mary, and others. I am not trying to attack them, but I do think it is important that when you ask people to name the ten commandments that you get them to name all of them. So many of us have turned away from studying the Word of God. We need to go back to reading it ourselves and not simply trusting what others tell us it says. Thank you again for your interest in this topic and your desire to point out to others the need to for remembering it.

I‘m a long time fan of Fox & Friends. Concerning the “ten commandments”, I’m certain that everyone engaging in this debate have simply gone down the proverbial rabbit trail. There are only “2” commandments that matter. Matt 22, Jesus Himself declared “…Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

When we focus on what Jesus identified as the 1st and Greatest commandment, all the of the unproductive debate concerning the Ten will simply go away!

Please have the courage to address this particular dynamic of the Ten Commandments issue.

Thanks for all you do!

I know this is a serious subject, but it reminds me of one of the funniest scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie. In “The History of the World”, “The Bible”.. Mel Brooks is playing Moses coming down from the Mount carrying 3 tablets containing the
Commandments..He shouts out to the multitude of people below that he has FIFTEEN Commandments, as soon
as he says that, he accidently drops one of the tablets, breaking it into pieces, and immediately shouts out, ten, I have TEN Commandments!

Alisyn—-
The REAL story in your sojourn outside this morning was;–why did Steve D. pull you abruptly away from the squad car—in a very abrupt, serious, manner?; (paraphrase) “You can’t make them double-park”, etc What was that all about? Picking out 2 NY officers, as participants in your survey, was perfect! Although, you could have also asked them something about consuming donuts rather than their knowledge of Big Macs! ——–Good Job! I love you guys. You always start my day!

Steve Doocy mentioned in passing this morning a trick to remember the Ten Commandments. Can you post those somewhere? I have googled and can’t find what he said.

Allison, it doesn’t surprise me that most people POLLED do not know the 10 commandments…actually, given the fact that we have surrendered our educational system to the Humanists and have discounted religious teaching to a mere afterthought of …”isn’t that nice, but don’t you think the trees are more important!”
Anyway, I still think you remind me of Red Velvet Cake. Keep up your excellent work.

I saw some of the interviews this morning. I too was saddened that some have no idea what the 10 commandments were. Especially the little kid who had no clue.

We wonder why the world is in the mess it is, perhaps if we all taught, lived, and paid more heed to the 10 commandments and the Bible in general, we would be living in a much better world. What do we really spend all our time on….what goes into the heart is what will come out…. if you don’t even believe in a Creator, you can still learn much from the biblical principals in the 10 that will enrich your life.

Thanks for opening our eyes to this crazy stat.

PS… love Fox and Friends! Enjoy watching it every morning while the kids are getting ready for school.

It’s time to bring back the old Baltimore Catechism.
Alisyn, I bet you don’t know what that is.

Your timing for this story was perfect! I am getting ready to teach the Ten Commandment story to my Junior Church class this Sunday. I would love it if you could post mnemonic for remembering these that was mentioned by Steve Doocy.

Thanks!

I found the website that has the mnemonic on The Ten Commandments - http://epicstoriesofthebible.com. It has a little quiz on there to see if you know The Ten Commandments and there is a banner on that page with it. This is what it has:
I - Idolatry (Don’t worship idols)
A - Adultery (Faithful wives and husbands)
M - Murder (Don’t commit murger)
T - Take (Don’t steal)
H - Honor (Obey your parents)
E - Envy (Don’t be jealous)
L - Lie (Don’t ever lie)
O - One (Only one God to worship)
R - Rest (On the Sabbath)
D - Disrespect (Don’t use God’s name in vain)

It’s amazing that hotels are kicking out Bibles. In the 60’s they kicked the Bible out of schools - look what has happened since. Whenever someone says,” where was God when all this bad stuff happened”, I only have one thing to say - He won’t go where he’s not wanted. If you kick him out of your life - he won’t force himself on you. You have to ask him into your life to see results. Evidently, someone was doing something they shouldn’t have been doing, and the presence of the Bible in the room, convicted them, and made them feel uneasy. God doesn’t go anywhere - man goes away from God.

First of all, understand who gave the “Ten Commandments, and who they were given to !!!

They were first given to Moses, and given twice, given first on Mount Sinai; In Exodus 20: 1-21, whereas Moses went by himself to seek the Lord his God and there God met with Him to instruct him, giving commandments as to a social order among the HEBREW people, who are God’s chosen.

Also there is a order placed, with the “Ten Commandment”, the first four deal with the worshiping of God, the relationship between God and man, all the others, have to do with the social issues of life, how the people of God are to deal with one another.

The second time in the book Exodus 34 verse 1, after that Moses broke the first Tablets of Stone when as yet the people had corrupted themselves and sinned against the Lord God as they grew impatient waiting for Moses to come down from Mount Sinai. All through the Old Testament of God’s Book (the Bible) up to the book of Malachi, the “Ten Commandments” where for no other nation but the HEBREW NATION. It wan not just the Ten Commandment ( which are the basics of all other Law) that where given, throughout the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy many other Laws (commandments) did God give his people to adhere too.
