The Fires - What Should the News Cover?
It’s hard to blog on big breaking news days. I’m sort of on perma-standby.
The producers tend to throw out the show’s rundown and just roll with the developments. That means that my news updates float (news lingo for not having any set time). That happened at the start of this morning’s show.
I stood waiting in the wings to do my 7am (eastern) news break, but the live reports from the SoCal fires were too compelling to cut away from. So they killed my hit (as we say when a segment gets squeezed out by more pressing news). A few minutes ago, the producers summoned me into the studio for the bottom-of-the-hour update, though I admit it feels a little strange to be reporting on other news when the situation in California is dire and urgent.
How do you turn away from a live shot showing flames threatening a community? What do you think? Do you want to hear other news this morning or should we concentrate on the fires?

Right now I have two friends that are fighting breast cancer and the fire, so honestly Alisyn if I can anything about them it would be great. Adam was covering the area they were in, and no word from them today. I am hopeful they are okay.
I think it was yesterday around the noon hour(cst) that a local fire official was at a press conference and seemed quite upset with the state legislature’s “micro-managing” of the fire situation. Is there any more on this or is it being treated as one guy with an axe to grind?
California is overrated. Too much coverage! I’ve heard it all several times. I can’t switch to any other station without more coverage of the fires.
Good morning,
On the personal note, I start my morning’s down here in South Eastern Louisiana with Foz and Friends. I also personally want the coverage on the Southern California fires. I grew up in Malibu during the 50′ and 60’s. I raised my children in North County San Diego and moved to the New Orleans area, 9 months before Katrina. I have family and friends in six areas of the fires. I also find I have a unique observation of the Evacuations. How it is good to see the Q and the Fairgrounds in contrast to what occurred in New Orleans and other Katerina sites. As well as the huge differences in Malibu fires. From the early years to the current. Back when our parents were encouraged to stay and go roof top.The fires of those years would burn from Topanga to Ventura County in a matter of hours. One thing that has not changed is Zuma Beach being the place for livestock, I knew by age 6, smell smoke…Get the horses to the beach. The small livestock to the back of Mom’s station wagon and pictures in the freezer. One major difference that hits me most today is… You can defend against fire, nothing can defend against a Hurricane. Well Thank you for the Coverage and the family feel I have with you all every morning…Blessings to All, Jen
Enough already with the fires. We get it. Santa Anna winds. Fire in Malibu and other areas around San Diego. We don’t need to hear it over and over and over. If something REALLY changes in the story let us know, but please stop pounding it in the ground. The world does not revolve around California and New York despite what some might think to the contrary. Plenty of news in the rest of the nation and the world.
I think FOX is covering the SoCal fires just right..Letting their qualified field reporters handle the reporting. Evidently, CNN has no faith in their reporters, they had to send all the anchors to CA. to report!…
This is a major catastrophe and it would be difficult not to cover the story, but if there is other news in the world we need updates on those stories too.
Of course the fires are a big story, but they aren’t the only story. It’s the same sort of overkill we get when hurricanes approach the country. Fox is a national channel and should remember that there are many other important things happening in the nation and the world. You could easily spend less time on the fire without losing any important information.
If there were breaking news of a nature that really needs reporting the constant coverage would make sense, but when the coverage is basically a reporter standing in front of a burnt out home it can wait 5 minutes while we hear other news that is going on.
After awhile one burnt neighborhood looks like another. One helicopter shot of the fire is little different than another helicopter shot.
Is something going to change during the time it takes to tell the other headlines? Unlikely.
If there is time for commercial breaks there is time for the news headlines too.
The day is almost over, but I think enough of the wall to wall coverage of the fires. Did I miss something, has the world stopped and that is all that is happening????
My heart goes out to CA but the Left Coast and the Right Coast seem to get the idea when something happens to them, the news is wall to wall about it, the rest of the country gets overlooked. I hate to admit I had to tune into CNN to get the World News but I did. I can’t stay on that station very long, my blood pressure, ya know. ) They are so busy trying to be global, they forget they broadcast from the good ole USA.
PLEASE Alisyn, tomorrow tell us if the rest of the world is still out there.
Please stop comparing the disaster relief program in New Orleans with the disaster relief program in California. There is no comparison.
I’ve been listening to each show starting from Fox & Friends to Bill O’Reilly all day and I have listened to claims how the Fed’s, Local government officials, and emergency people are doing such a great job in and during the disaster relief efforts and how the folks there are being taken care including the evacuees at the stadium due to the fires in the Cali.
Indeed they have done a wonderful job, but, there are many comments by the Fox staff and other officials saying that the job they are doing is so much better than the work that was done down in New Orleans.
Hogwash. Lets think about this! Picture your street, no wait, your neighborhood, or subdivision completely under water with just 3 foot of water. Now picture your the entire county or parish, every home, every business for as far as you can see covered by 3 feet of water. Now picture this, Lets cover not only your county, but, four counties away from yours, North, South, East and West covered with 3 feet of water and debris spread from hear to Kingdom Come, on every side, and passable road.
Are you coming to grips with the picture? In New Orleans, and surrounding areas including Mississippi, there was no drinking water, no electricity, no gas to cook, no petroleum, no transportation, oh wait, except for Helicopter recuse that were able try to bring in food and water and/or make rescue among every house not only in New Orleans, but surrounding parishes.
In St. Bernard Parish alone, there was over 50,000 homes to check for survivors much less bring in food and water. Hence my anger after hearing how well the Cali representatives are doing over and above the efforts in Cali to make sure people have what they need does not even come close to the conditions that prevented that kind of relief to the people just in the city of New Orleans alone. There was no eatable food to put in the concession stands in the Super Dome, no water, nothing to cooked the food with or even keep it warm. There were no extreme restrooms or massages for the weary. Just a place where people were so desperate to leave it was unreal. And to think, they did not have any was expect a helicopter or boat to leave the area. Even the Mayor and Governor wanted to run and hide under a mountain. I can not blame them, this disaster was so grand on the grand scale that no matter if we had every person in the US helping, they could not get it done any better or faster.
Fox, stop and think before you put your big fat foot in your foot. If California were buried by water for as far as the eye could see, not a soul in the US could do anything better than was done in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Go outside your home, and look out from your front door and picture water up to your door bell and then picture water as far as you can see and think of a way to get from point a to point b. Tell us how you would make life something other than a living hell after the forth day of this.
Stop the nonsense of comparing, if I may, I will use Bill O’Reilly’s words, “it’s just another bunch of Pin Heads” who think the Cali fire disaster is comparable to the Katrina disaster.
I think coverage of the fires is very important, but, I also would like to hear about any other important news events.
I have a question, not pertaining to the fires. I didn’t know where else to go to ask. First of all, I love Fox news, I watch it all the time, or as much as I can. I love you guys in the morning.
My question is, yesterday, I was watching Fox news and the commercials were on, and there was a commerical for Citgo gas station. I was a little surprise, because I thought Chavez owned Citgo; am I wrong about this information?
A big Fox News fan
Vicky
While the fires are really tragic I think we need to move on to other news. On a positive note I have never seen a group come together like the people have in California to help one another. It is great to see that after what happen in New Orleans
HEY, I THINK YA’LL ARE DOING GREAT ON THE COVERAGE.
Reporting on the fires is great, But there’s also other news out there. Harping on the same thing over and over gets tiresome. We are all sorry about people losing their homes, but we also would like to know the other breaking news stories. Just my opinion.
Thanks, Dave
Ps. GREAT JOB ALISYN. I get up early just to watch you.
On Joe Scarborough’s show, he just played Keith Olbermann’s ridicule of FOX by mentioning the memo that suggested terrorists have considered setting wildfires in the West. He dismissed it because the memo was about 3 years old.
So what? IF it is something they have considered since 9-11, why can’t it be mentioned? If it was a neo-nazi group or similar, he would be demanding that the lead be followed up. This is another case of political correctness where we can’t accuse radical Islam of anything — it’s all George Bush’s fault.
I do have compassion for those who have lost everything in these fires. After two days of coverage unless its breaking news like another community in danger cover it. Adam Housley has done a great job reporting as have your other reporters on sight. As far as the coverage, dont cut to a reporter that is just standing by some smoldering house.
Yesterday you had a couple that was interviewing with a couple of different stations. They had a home on several acres with 50 pets, they didnt carry insurance on their home and it was burnt to the ground. Yes its a tragedy and my heart goes out to them for losing everything. I never heard one reporter ask them why they didnt have insurance. If its to expensive keep a dog and get rid of the other pets then buy the insurance.
I personally dont think those without insurance should recieve more from the government then those who carried the insurance. Even at a 1% deductible for a home out in California the cost would be amazing. The Federal Government needs to set up a seperate insurance for those who live in these area’s like Flood Insurance, and make it mandatory if you live in these area’s you will carry the insurance.
Sorry for being long winded.
I would like to hear more about the neighborhoods where they cleared the overgrown brush out and zero homes were destroyed. Most of this could all be avoided if the eviromentalist crazies kept their mouths shut. I can’t believe the fire companys BIG wigs can’t override them.
i think the fox news coverage of any situation is the best. the coverage of katrina by shepard smith was award winning but feature storys should be less repetitive and just the updates.
Your show has always balanced the reported news with real human events. This said, the coverage of the fires has been within good taste, yet informational for us on the other coast. Folks in SoCal want to know about what is happening when a huricance is making land fall here in Florida. The blame game makes my heart sink when all of my fellow Americans in need become a pawn of politics. Keep up the great work!!!!
Cover both - the fires and other major news items. Keep up the great news reporting. There are a multitude of reasons why Fox News is number one!
Alisyn,
I’m a big fan of Fox and Friends and the Fox News Channel.. I thought you should know that some of these left-wing media outlets are still taking one single piece you guys did on Al-Qaeda and the fires and blowing it all out of proportion.. This article names you by name, takes much of what you said out of context and has totally blown the whole piece out of proportion:
http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Fox_hypes_Qaeda_plotted_fires_theory_1025.html
I hope you guys can address this propaganda and slander and make sure people know the truth.. It sickens me that people are so gullible to believe anything they read..
Thank you and take care.
Censors eh?
Figures…..told my marines that, they didn’t believe me……
Alisyn, After reading most of your blog posts from the guys. It seems to me that you set their hearts on fire with your sassy beauty and the twinkle of your eyes. So lets forget about the flames of calif. and the waters of katrina and do a whole show about you and the other hottie Gretchen….oh yeah
